Thankful for Friends, Family, and the Mercer Island Community Dear Readers, In this issue filled with inspiration, I'm excited to share stories that illustrate community members transforming adversity into meaningful service. We profile the courage of Chezik Tsunoda. Chezik's dedication to water safety through her "No More Under" foundation, enacting legislation with "Yori's Law" and production of her documentary film "Drowning in Silence" are three major achievements that were ignited by personal heartache. By honoring her son, Chezik champions an important cause and strengthens our caring island spirit. Special thanks to Marcia Schlegal for recommending this incredible story. We also feature MIHS Graduate, Lacie West, Executive Director of Friends of the Children - Seattle and their innovative long-term mentorship model guiding vulnerable youth. I'm moved by Lacie's leadership improving lives through caring commitment. Yori's Law and Legacy It’s a bright sunny day in July. The year is 2045 and you’re onboarding a flight to Hawaii on Alaska Airlines. Unbeknownst to you, your pilot is fellow Mercer Islander, Yori Tsunoda. From the jetway, you see the pilot greeting passengers and when you finally board you notice it’s Yori. He recognizes you and shakes hands. He notices you are with a child and quickly presents a captain’s pin. Casting a huge grin on your loved one. Chezik Tsunoda would’ve been the person you called as soon as you landed to tell her how much you enjoyed seeing her son in the
cockpit and how much he’s grown. Sadly, that day will not come because Yori fell to one of the most silent killers in our modern-day society. Drowning. “Yori was a super energetic, loving, and adorable kid,” says Chezik. “He always wanted to be an Alaska Airlines pilot. After receiving a calendar as a keepsake, he studied the pictures and memorized every single plane.” For Chezik, Yori is her north star, and he continues to guide his mother. He’s done an amazing job. With her guardian angel, Chezik

has started a foundation, driven legislative action, and even debuted as a Movie Director and Producer. For many, such an overwhelming grief might have silenced any spark of hope or purpose. But Chezik, driven by the profound love for her son, turned her grief into a mission. She resolved that no other parent should have to experience the heartbreak she felt. “I know the hole in your heart.” She explains. From this determination, she founded No More Under, a foundation dedicated to water safety awareness. Chezik strongly believes in education and a healthy dose of accountability. Chezik calls swimming a life-saving skill and it should be taught to all our area youth. This year, No More Under have given over 700 swimming lessons. Chezik also reached out to Representative April Berg, who, having recognized the pressing need for change, joined forces with her. Together, they paved the way for the introduction of "Yori’s Law." This pivotal legislation consecrated May 15 as Washington Water Safety Day. On this dedicated day, parents, educators, and other key figures in a child’s life were urged to accentuate the importance of water safety. The essence of Yori’s Law mirrored habitual safety behaviors: Much like the

automatic gesture of fastening a seatbelt in a vehicle, wearing a life jacket near any open waters was promoted as a reflex. The principal aim of the law was to embed these safety measures into daily consciousness, ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, understood the immediate actions to undertake in the face of potential drowning hazards. And if this is enough, Chezik leveraged her background in journalism and film, embarking on a mission to chronicle her painful journey and honor Yori’s memory. She wrote, directed, and produced the movie, Drowning in Silence. Her film serves both as a touching homage to Yori and a compelling call to action about water safety. In Chezik’s words, “The film is a way for Yori to live forever. It’s his legacy.” The profound emotions and compelling narrative of the film resonate with audiences globally. It stands as a vivid reminder of the lurking dangers even in familiar surroundings. Due to its impactful message noteworthy film festivals like the Brooklyn Film Festival and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival have showcased "Drowning in Silence," amplifying the message of water safety. Chezik’s journey has many highs and many lows. For support, she willingly credits her family, friends, and her wonderful Mercer Island Community. Specifically, “I feel incredibly supported. I know I can reach out to my neighbors. From the day we moved in, I felt incredibly welcomed here.” She fondly remembers everyone in the neighborhood coming to the film’s screening. Chezik is an inspiration. She is blessed with off-the-charts energy, and you can feel her brilliance when you talk to her. When asked about a message to her neighbors and our Mercer Island Community, she had this sage advice. “Let’s lean into wanting to keep our community safe. Holding each other accountable for water safety.” As if she was reminded by Yori, she quickly added, “That's what’s amazing about this island. There’s something so special about this place.” “Yet, we can't deny we are surrounded by water. We can't take it for granted. When our kids are around the water, they need to let someone know if they’re going in and ask if they should wear a life jacket. Even for us, as adults. When we are on a boat, wear a life jacket.” Chezik’s messages resonate with many and I suspect that number continues to grow everyday with every viewing.

Through legislative action, her foundation, and her film, Chezik has transformed her personal heartbreak into a symbol of hope and proactive change. With Yori’s Law, there is a formal decree for Water Safety now on record in the State of Washington. “No More Under” actively educates on a group and individual basis, water safety and lifesaving skills. "Drowning in Silence" transcends its role as a film, becoming a rallying cry for communities to prioritize and champion the safety of their loved ones around water. Altogether, quite a collection of ongoing legacy. Chezik has synthesized the message across these three meaningful entities. Chezik continues her journey of education and awareness. Chezik seeks to enlighten more with her upcoming Ted Talk about “Looking Outward”. Chezik’s calling in thought leadership and film is only beginning. Seattle, known for its iconic Space Needle, bustling fish markets, and ever-emerging tech hubs, offers a tapestry of stories, each woven with threads of dreams, hopes, and occasionally, sheer determination. Amidst this rich tableau, a story of unwavering dedication and transformative leadership stands out: that of Lacie West, the driving force behind Friends of the Children (Friends-Seattle). Lacie’s story blossoms from the interwoven fabrics of South Seattle and Mercer Island High School, representing diverse but complementary life tapestries. Mercer Island, characterized by high expectations and abundant resources, resounded with bold ambitions. Dreams there were not just dreams, but confident expectations brought to life through the community’s ample resources and unwavering support. In South Seattle, the community thrived on tightknit bonds among families and friends. Their achievements were celebrated with fervor, recognizing in a different way, the dedication each milestone entailed. Lacie reflects, “In my
Seattle community, each success was deeply cherished, its significance echoing amongst us. Mercer Island brought with it a different form of support - one amplified by high expectations and resources.” Lacie realized the foundational power of support, whether it stemmed from the familial ties in Seattle or the resource-rich networks in Mercer Island. In both realms, community played a pivotal role, showcasing that while the nature of support might differ, its essence remains crucial to shaping young lives. Mentoring was the key! Friends-Seattle isn’t a mere footnote in Lacie’s life; it’s a blazing headline. Rooted in an ethos of profound commitment, the organization promises every youth a mentor from kindergarten, standing by their side for over a decade. The longevity impresses, but as Lacie is quick to point out, “It’s about more than the 12 years. It’s about the intensity, depth, and unwavering support, evidenced by mentors dedicating around 16 hours each month. Some relationships have even withstood the test of time beyond the decade.” Beyond the metrics, though, is the palpable transformation. Lacie’s eyes light up as she shares, “When a child, perhaps for the first time, realizes there’s a community rooting for them, a switch flips.” The results? Alumni whose faces gleam not just with achievement, but an ignited passion to chase larger dreams. Yet, the vision of Friends-Seattle isn’t restricted to individual success stories. Lacie has expanded the organization’s embrace. The philosophy is holistic: “It takes a village to raise a youth,” she muses. And so, Friends-Seattle seeks to be that village, weaving partnerships with schools, caregivers, local initiatives, and families, to craft a safety net, ensuring no youth falls through.

The 2022 Impact Report stats tell the story. 96% of youth made progress towards school-success goals, 94% made progress on their improved health goal, 95% made progress on their making good choices goal, 96% made progress on their planning for the future goal, and 96% made progress towards their prosocial development goal. The budget of Friends-Seattle distinctly reflects its mission, placing a profound emphasis on all-encompassing youth support. With a track record of supporting approximately 200 youth over 23 years, the organization allocates roughly $19,000 annually for each youth. This allocation encompasses an array of services, ranging from mentor compensations to crucial emergency provisions. This financial commitment extends beyond mere mentorships, fueling educational aids, fostering extracurricular passions, and amplifying community outreach. It’s a strategic investment, laying down every possible brick on the path to a child’s success. Lacie West is a vision carrier. The Friends–Seattle community (staff, board, volunteers, community partners, alumni, caregivers) has morphed FriendsSeattle from a savior mentality to support system that helps youth understand the power they hold. With each youth that emerges from the program, Friends-Seattle is adding to Seattle’s tapestry, ensuring that every thread, regardless of its origin, shines brilliantly.

In 1985, a group of dedicated community members in Mercer Island embarked on a remarkable journey. Their mission was clear: to enhance the quality of education in their local public schools. What began as a modest effort to provide textbooks and a few computers has since grown into an extraordinary movement that has raised over $27 million for the Mercer Island school district. This transformative initiative, known as the Mercer Island Schools Foundation has become a cornerstone of community giving, igniting a passion for learning, fostering innovation, and promoting academic excellence throughout the Mercer Island public schools.
BRIDGING THE GAP The Mercer Island Schools Foundation serves as a vital link between the resources provided by the state and the educational needs ofthe island’s students. While state and public funds are invaluable, more funding is needed to adequately support
the rigorous, challenging, and inclusive education every child deserves. The Foundation’s contributions have evolved into a commitment of close to – and often over – a million dollars annually to the Mercer Island School District. These funds ensure smaller class sizes, rigorous academics, social, emotional, and academic support, and a wide range of enrichment experiences for kindergarten through high school students.

TEACHER ENRICHMENT GRANTS: FUELING INNOVATION Every fall, the Mercer Island Schools Foundation awards teacher classroom grants to fund programs and resources that extend beyond the regular curriculum. Mercer Island teachers provide engaging learning opportunities outside the standard curriculum by adding innovative, imaginative, creative opportunities and experiences that would not otherwise be available. These grants include programs such as an elementary author collaboration with every student writing a chapter of a class novel culminating in a published book, sterling engines used in physics classes for hands-on investigation of alternative energy sources, field trips to the Museum of Flight, and Seattle Shakespeare Company workshops for high school Drama classes. These grants enable educators to explore unconventional teaching methods, introduce cutting-edge technology, and bring unique experiences into the lives of their students. The result is a learning environment beyond the textbooks, encouraging students to think critically, problem-solve, and explore their passions.

When listing their home, sellers can greatly benefit from opting for a pre-listing home inspection. It is crucial to recognize that a home inspection contingency is a common and often troublesome condition for buyers in real estate transactions. By accepting an inspection contingency, sellers allow buyers to potentially tie up the property for up to 10 days without even conducting an inspection, providing an opportunity for the buyer to reconsider the purchase, renegotiate the price, or request costly repairs and upgrades. Additionally, the traditional business practice poses further issues as our local Multiple Listing Service mandates changing the property status to “Pending Inspection” (PI). Consequently, if the property returns to the market, potential buyers may perceive it as problematic, leading to stigmatization and potential loss of profit amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.
