Rooted in Community

February is such a joyful and energizing time of year in Houston. With rodeo season approaching and Valentine’s Day reminding us to celebrate what we love, there’s a natural sense of connection in the air. While Memorial Lifestyle is always rooted in community, our Love Local issue gives us a special opportunity to intentionally highlight the people, places, and businesses that make our corner of Houston so meaningful.

As a native Houstonian, I’m incredibly proud of this city and especially proud of the neighborhoods we serve. One of my favorite parts of being the owner and publisher of Memorial Lifestyle is getting a front-row seat to the creativity, passion, and perseverance of local business owners and entrepreneurs. This issue is filled with stories that reflect just that, from longtime favorites to exciting new ventures, all contributing to the vibrancy of our community.

Supporting local businesses is about so much more than shopping small. It’s about investing back into the community we live in, strengthening relationships, and helping our neighbors build sustainable, fulfilling livelihoods. When we choose local, we help preserve the character, charm, and heart of the Memorial area.

This issue celebrates all the fun, flavorful, and inspiring things happening right here at home, and I hope it encourages you to explore, connect, and continue supporting the incredible people who make our community thrive.

Thank you for being part of Memorial Lifestyle. If you’re not already following along, I invite you to connect with us on Instagram (@memoriallifestyle) and on Facebook (Memorial Lifestyle). We would also love to hear from you directly. You’re always welcome to email me at Suzanne.Schakett@citylifestyle.com to share what you love or what you’d like to see more of. And if you’re a local business owner interested in learning how we connect brands with the communities they serve, email me to schedule a discovery call.

With gratitude,

February 2026

LAUREN HASKETT MIXES A LITTLE ‘EDGY’ INTO CALIFORNIA CASUAL STYLE.

Lauren Haskett came to Houston nearly 20 years ago with a new college degree, a fiancé and a job she’d gotten while visiting a cousin.

A native of Fort Worth, she graduated from the University of Oklahoma and wanted to return to Texas. On a trip to Houston, she cold-called Kitchen and Bath Concepts, then owned by Peggy McGowen and now owned by her daughter, Micqui McGowen. They hired her immediately and that job set Haskett on her path.

In February, the Houston Design District will honor her as the newest inductee of Leaders In Design.

Located in the Houston Design Center, Kitchen and Bath Concepts works on high-end projects, sometimes as the design consultant directly with a homeowner and sometimes with an interior designer when a project is complicated and needs more attention to detail.

After 5 years with KBC, she launched her own firm, Lauren Haskett Design.

Influenced by shelter magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, Elle Décor and Metropolitan Home, Haskett leans toward the easy style we call “California casual.” She believes in using a mix of color and pattern with a few upscale and edgy things thrown in.

“I still love that aesthetic. My true style will always be rooted in that philosophy of chic, casual and colorful,” Haskett says.

These days, Haskett works with clients to provide longevity in homes, That means flex rooms that can be play spaces for younger children, but grow into something else when those kids are teenagers. For homeowners, having a bedroom and accessible bathroom on the first floor is key for aging in place.

Aside from that, an overall focus on wellness has her clients installing saunas and gyms in their homes.

“When I travel I like to find the chicest stores and galleries, and that can be on a family road trip or a vacation to London. I love going to art museums – that fills my cup,” Haskett says of her inspiration.

This living room is an eclectic mix of traditional, vintage and more contemporary pieces.

Mirth

IS THERE A PARTICULAR COLLECTION YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR? WHY?

Spring. We push ourselves artistically each season, and we blew it out of the water with this collection. We worked hard to blend current trends with our laid-back Mirth aesthetic in a way that feels fresh yet still rooted in our traditional craftsmanship. We introduced more pure silks and linens, and linen, especially, brings this beautiful natural “bounce” that gives the garments real life and movement.

There’s also a deeper level of craftsmanship this season, from custom eyelets to intricate embroidery. And the styling took everything to another level. Our stylist, Paulina Padilla, really helped us reimagine the pieces in unexpected ways

WHAT DO YOU THINK SURPRISES FIRST-TIME CUSTOMERS ABOUT YOUR BRAND?

First-time customers are often surprised to learn that we’re based in Houston. They’re also struck by the quality and attention to detail in every piece. The craftsmanship, texture, and originality of the textiles really stand out once they experience the brand firsthand.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING BASED IN HOUSTON?

Houston is such an inspiring place to build a brand — it’s truly a cultural capital, with world-class art, fashion, and food shaping the energy of the city. There’s a wonderful community of local designers and founders here; we all support one another and share resources, which creates a rare sense of camaraderie. Being here allows us to form real relationships with our customers.

WHAT CAN SHOPPERS EXPECT FROM YOUR BRAND THIS YEAR?

I’m excited about growing my business this year with the next phase of Edit by Elaine Turner.  I’m expanding the brand into new product categories, including shoes, fine jewelry, luxury apparel and home and tabletop accessories to offer a complete luxury lifestyle experience.

At the same time, I’m investing in a more seamless omni-channel approach, enhancing both our website and in-store touchpoint to meet each customer exactly where she is. Edit is all about personalized service and going the extra mile for our customers.

WHAT DO YOU THINK SURPRISES FIRST-TIME CUSTOMERS ABOUT YOUR BRAND?

Customers are often surprised by the breadth and uniqueness of our collections from all over the globe that you simply cannot find

anywhere else in Houston. I want every visit to Edit to spark that feeling of fashion exploration and discovery, to fall in love with a new brand and to learn the story behind the designers to create an engaging experience every time they walk through the doors.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING BASED IN HOUSTON?

Houston is an extremely supportive city and, as a born-andraised Houstonian who has built most of my career here for more than 25 years, that support means everything to me. My favorite part of being based in Houston is dressing the women of this city. They’re fashion-conscious, open-minded to new designers, and unafraid to take risks.

Additionally, Houston’s sense of community inspires me every day. Through charitable trunk shows and other initiatives, I love giving back and supporting causes that matter to our city.

Our clients can expect to find what is on trend, as well as fashion forward pieces.  The styles we love for 2026 in the new year ahead are:

Denim will also have interesting pocket details, slight barrel, variety of denim colors from white, tan, light blues and dark blues from brands including Pistola. Pastel and polka dot trends in colors like lavender and pale pink from Secular and Apiece Apart will also be popular. We also love the Sneakerina trend which is a combination of a sneaker and ballerina look that you will see from lots of brands but our favorites are Rag & Bone and Italian-made, Labucq.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR COLLECTION YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR? WHY?

We are super excited to carry Olivia by LIVRO this spring.  Inspired by the lively colors and sunny days of Palm Beach, the collection features bold prints, effortless silhouettes, and a burst of color that make the pieces perfect for warmer days ahead.

Alliance

Fencing Academy

Alliance Fencing Academy

Andrey Geva, Head Coach & Owner alliance-fencing-academy.com

WHAT ASPECTS OF YOUR COACHING STYLE OR TRAINING PROGRAMS DIFFERENTIATE YOUR ACADEMY?

At Alliance, we combine classic fencing techniques with modern trends in international fencing. We do not focus on immediate results; instead, we teach our fencers a complete game they can use as they progress to higher levels of competition.

IS THERE A SIGNATURE TECHNIQUE, TRAINING METHOD, OR MINDSET YOUR ACADEMY IS KNOWN FOR?

Alliance fencers are well known for their refined fencing form, demonstrating a complete fencing game and a strong competitive spirit.

HOW DO YOU BUILD A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS OF DIFFERENT AGES, SKILL LEVELS, AND GOALS?

Fencers practice together within their age group, regardless of skill level. At Alliance, we do not have a separate beginner class; we divide students into Youth, Cadet/Junior, and Senior/Veteran age groups. New students join the more experienced fencers immediately and learn the fundamentals from coaches and advanced fencers. Making new friends in fencing is key to engaging in the sport. We meet their needs and expectations, whether they aim to become high-level international competitors or enjoy fencing for fun.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A BUSINESS OWNER IN HOUSTON?

I have visited over 62 countries worldwide. While I enjoy experiencing different cultures and architectural styles, I prefer Houston for its business-friendly environment and vibrant lifestyle.

IF YOU EAT ONE THING

IF YOU EAT ONE THING AT ZARANDA, TRY THE TAQUITOS DE ATÚN: TENDER MARINATED TUNA IN A CRISP BLUE-CORN SHELL.

Zaranda, the latest concept by James Beard Award-winning chef Hugo Ortega, brings the flavors of Las Californias to downtown Houston, celebrating a cuisine without borders. From the bounty of Northern California’s fruits, vegetables, and nuts to Baja’s celebrated seafood and centuries-old wines, the menu merges land and sea with modern creativity. The restaurant’s namesake technique, zarandeado, features seafood, meats, and vegetables cooked over wood in a signature wire basket, giving diners a taste of Baja’s culinary heritage. Chef Ortega explains the flavors of a popular appetizer, Taquitos de Atún. zarandahouston.com

THE TUNA

The Pacific Coast has an abundance of seafood, and among Chef Hugo’s favorites is yellowfin tuna. This fish, found along the coast and in the Sea of Cortez, is known for its firm, flavorful meat, making it a popular choice for just about any preparation. For the Taquitos de Atún, Ortega cuts the tuna into small cubes and marinates it in ponzu, sesame oil, and fresh ginger.

THE SHELL

Tacos are popular throughout Baja, most commonly served on soft corn or flour tortillas, and one of Baja’s most popular

street foods is tostadas, which are served on crispy, flat tortillas.  For this dish, Ortega merges the two to create a petite taco served in a crispy shell. “The tortilla is special because it is handmade in-house from start to finish, using blue corn for the masa that also has tortilla ash in it, which adds to the dark color and gives a depth of flavor,” says Ortega.

THE MIX-INS

The diced tuna is marinated with ponzu, sesame oil, and fresh ginger – a nod to the long history of Asian culinary influence of the Baja region, including Japanese cuisine. “These flavors add additional freshness and umami to the dish,” says Ortega. The tacos are garnished with green onions and furikake, which adds a bit of salt and earthiness to the dish.

THE SAUCE

Between the taco shell and the tuna is a layer of silky avocado puree, a blend of avocado, sour cream, and fresh lemon juice and lemon zest. “This adds wonderful freshness and flavor but also gives a third texture to the dish – the crunchy shell, the firm yet soft tuna, and the silky avocado puree,” adds Ortega.
