Along with reading and math, Mariana Barran, owner of Hibiscus Linens, learned how to embroider from Spanish nuns while attending school in Monterrey, Mexico. Barran, who considers herself a “fast stitcher,” enjoyed the art and eventually left her job in the energy sector to open her bespoke boutique, Hibiscus Linens. Hibiscus Linens specializes in embroidered and hand-stitched items for clothing, home, and gift giving occasions. Hostess gifts make their way onto many to-do lists especially during the holiday season when many celebrations and overnight stays take place. For Barran, who never goes anywhere empty-handed, a handmade hostess gift makes the gift-giving experience even more special. “A beautiful thing about giving or receiving something handmade is the time and craftsmanship that goes into it. In 2006, Mikey’s Place was founded out of necessity by a parent who understood firsthand the joys and challenges of raising a child with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Ingrid Monroy, the driving force behind Mikey’s Place, recognized the isolation and overwhelm often accompanying caring for children with life-altering medical conditions. This nonprofit organization obtained federal tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) charity and serves around 500 families annually in Greater Houston, all raising children, teenagers, or adults with various disabilities. Mikey’s Place fulfills its mission through four key programs. As the exclusive publisher of Mikey’s Guide, the organization provides a comprehensive resource book. This invaluable guide contains detailed information about specialized summer camps, adapted sports and recreational activities, year-round special needs classes, respite programs, adult programs, schools, and educational resources. Mikey’s Place offers the Summer Campership Program, which financially assists families in sending their children to specialized summer camps or other enriching summer programs. Mikey’s Place hosts a free annual community event, the Summer Camp & Resource Fair, directly linking approximately 150-200 families with service providers and programs that can benefit their children. The Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation is on a mission to support families affected by Prion Disease, raise awareness, and support medical education and research efforts. Additionally, they provide education and information to families, caregivers, medical professionals, and funeral service providers. Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.
The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.
The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character.
