I was lucky to be invited to the red-carpet premier and I highly recommend you take the time to see it! Cha nge M a kers: Th isIsHouston Determined to help those that others won’t, ThisIsHouston is a non-profit focused on caring for and rescuing dogs in need.

A well-known quote attributed to Immanuel Kant says, "We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." Across Greater Houston, many organizations have made it their mission to help, care for and rescue animals in need. We are spotlighting one such organization - ThisIsHouston, formed in 2019 by co-founders Tom Heller and Laura Forma. Heller and Forma were independent rescuers who picked up dogs in need on a nearly daily basis. Their house was continuously full of dogs waiting for their forever home or a foster, and the hard work of finding a rescue organization to take in dogs was frustrating. Heller and Forma knew they could streamline this system if they created their own nonprofit organization, so they did just that. With a reliable network of volunteers already in place, ThisIsHouston began to take shape. Although Heller and Forma rescue dogs from all over the metro area, most of their recent efforts are focused in Cleveland, a small city northeast of Houston. "The situation in Cleveland is so bad, and they don't have a lot of resources there. We gathered a group of people, went out to Cleveland and started handing out flyers for a free vaccine clinic," says Heller. "We showed up with a tent and some vaccines thinking we would sit and wait for people to show up. People were lined up before we got there, and the line went down the street as far as we could see. A year later, we're there twice a month, giving free vaccines, microchips, dewormer and offering free spay and neutering services. We're vaccinating and chipping 200-300 dogs each time." Like most nonprofit organizations, ThisIsHouston relies on the kindness and commitment of others. Heller and Forma have been lucky enough to have a dedicated group of volunteers that help at their spay and neuter events and vaccination clinics but are always looking for extra help. "The three most important things we need are fosters, volunteers, and donations. Without these, we cannot continue. All the dogs we intake must go to a foster home, or we cannot help them," says Heller. "We dove into this head first, not knowing if the volunteers and donations would be there, but we committed ourselves. We have been able to help so many dogs in Houston and Cleveland, and we are grateful to everyone who has stepped up to help us along the way." this-is-houston.org

Canyon Road is the third-largest art market in the country, behind New York and Los Angeles. The halfmile stretch of road located in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is home to fine art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. Visitors should leave enough time in their itinerary to browse through this one-of-akind destination - it is worth the hours-long exploration. Visitors seeking outdoor time and beautiful panoramic views can visit ancient Indian pueblos and Bandelier National Monument or take a dip in a pristine alpine lake on the Nambe Lake Trail. If spring skiing is your idea of a great time, Ski Santa Fe is among the highest ski areas in the continental United States and offers easy, convenient skiing without all the crowds. The site is braided with a combination of challenging runs but is also an excellent place for first-time skiers or those more comfortable with easier runs. The lift tickets and rentals are reasonable, and the staff and instructors are great, too. What Santa Fe lacks in big-city infrastructure, it makes up for in can't-miss cultural immersion. Meow Wolf, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Palace of the Governors, Loretto Chapel, Museum of International Folk Art and San Miguel Chapel are a few highlights on a long list of must-see experiences. The Santa Fe Opera draws visitors from all over the world, and the festival

scene in the southwestern city makes it a top destination for locals and travelers alike. Festivals such as Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta, Santa Fe International Folk Market and The Burning of Zozobra spotlight the city's year-round offerings.

Santa Fe is a foodie's paradise, and visitors will immediately notice that Santa Fe chefs and natives love their red and green chiles. The peppers have historical and cultural significance in New Mexico and are found in many of the dishes and even cocktails. But don't worry, chile-free meals are easy to find at award-winning restaurants all over town. La Choza, The Shed, and Radish and Rye are a great mix of local and tourist favorites.

One hundred years ago, in 1922, the City of Houston built a fence around a tract of land in Hermann Park to house its first resident, an American bison named Earl. The Zoo's first official animal was part of the nationwide effort to showcase one of America's largest land mammals, which were nearly hunted to extinction at that time. Although Earl was the first animal at the Zoo, the fence around it began to expand yearly. Now, the Houston Zoo is a sprawling 55 acres dedicated to conservation and animal protection with a legacy of saving animals in the wild. One of their first efforts was to protect the Galápagos tortoises from extinction, and in the 1970s, the Houston Zoo was the first institution in the world to successfully hatch a St. Vincent's Amazon parrot. In 1984, the Zoo spearheaded the launch of the Houston toad breeding and reintroduction program; their ongoing list of conservation efforts

The Houston Zoo draws in over two million visitors each year and is home to over 6,000 permanent wildlife residents. As the second most visited zoo in the United States, and the most significant cultural attraction in the Houston region, it is able to support 49 wildlife conservation projects in 27 countries worldwide. “In order to connect communities with animals and inspire action to save wildlife, we’re completing our work and transforming the very heart of the Zoo. We take our visitors around the world, from the far reaches of Central America and the islands of the Galapagos, to our very own Texas Wetlands” said Lee Ehmke, President and CEO of the Houston Zoo. "What all began with a bison named Earl will now be a leader in the global movement to save wildlife." As part of the Zoo's efforts to highlight wildlife and ecosystems worldwide through interactive exhibits and animal encounters, their next efforts will

showcase the unique animal life of the Galápagos Islands. Slated to open in 2023, the Galápagos Islands exhibit spotlights sea lions, giant tortoises, sharks, and Humboldt penguins, exemplifying the delicate balance of ecosystems and the need to protect its future. To celebrate its centennial year, the Zoo will host "Centennial Saturdays" on the first Saturday of each month through the rest of the year. Guests can look forward to family-friendly interactive experiences relating to the Zoo's first 100 years. The celebration will continue throughout the summer with the launch of a mural series by some of Houston's most well-known artists. The murals can be found in the inner loop neighborhoods of Houston Heights, Third Ward, Fifth Ward, Downtown and EaDo. Houstonian Isabella Ruby, an 8th grader at Second Baptist School, took part in her first feature film, Murder at Yellowstone City, which premiered earlier this summer. Starring alongside a cast of A-list celebrities including Gabriel Byrne, Richard Dreyfuss, Aimee Garcia, Thomas Jane and Isaiah Mustafa, Isabella plays the precocious Josephine Wright, who is determined to find out who murdered her father. The movie, a period piece taking place in 1881, was filmed in Paradise Valley, Montana, and was produced by Houstonians Julie Stagner and Kelly Frazier. We sat down with Isabella to talk about her love of film and what comes next in her budding career.

Isabella Ruby WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WANTED TO BECOME AN ACTOR? It’s been a dream of mine since the thirdgrade. I tried a musical for the first time, and that first moment on stage made me realize that I was meant to be an actress. My parents were hesitant at first, but they finally said yes. It’s a dream come true. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST ROLE? As the lead of Ursula in the Little Mermaid in my school’s theater program. HOW DO YOU BALANCE ACTING AND SCHOOL? School musicals have their schedule built around the school’s schedule. As far as film goes, it helped that my first feature film was during Covid, and there was a lot of virtual support from my school. I also had an excellent onset teacher. WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT BEING AN ACTOR? I like the actual acting itself and getting to play a character. YOU WERE RECENTLY IN MURDER AT YELLOWSTONE CITY. WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT FILMING THIS MOVIE? I enjoyed that it was not in the studio but on an actual set. I also loved that it was an authentic setting, and the town of Yellowstone existed in the exact location all those years ago. The actors and director were also a joy to work with, and it was a great first experience. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR UPCOMING PROJECTS? I have another western going into production this fall. It hasn’t been officially announced, but I am thrilled to play another tough character. I will get to ride horses and do some more shootouts. I’m really excited. Alexandra Killion assembles all-star team from Houston’s design community in preparation for the first annual La Petite Maison Gala. Some of Houston’s most renowned architects, builders, and interior designers are teaming up to create one-of-a-kind dollhouses to be auctioned off benefitting ASCF

Houston interior designer Alexandra Killion released official details surrounding the debut of the first annual La Petite Maison Gala to be held on September 7 at The Junior League of Houston. Centered around a collection of oneof-a-kind dollhouses created by distinguished builders, architects, and designers, the gala will benefit A Shelter for Cancer Families (ASCF). This organization provides private residences and support services for families receiving cancer care in the Texas Medical Center. “We’re thrilled to be named the beneficiary of the La Petite Maison Gala,” said ASCF Director of Development and Communications Shellyn Shoenthal. “This innovative fundraising effort would not be possible without the creative capabilities and generous spirit of the Houston design community, and we’re grateful to the architects, builders, designers, and sponsors involved.” Killion selected ASCF, whose passion for home design, art, and architecture began at an early age. Born and raised in Houston and the daughter of celebrated opera singer Paul Fink, Killion traveled extensively as a young girl. She completed her B.A. at the University of Texas at Austin before continuing her design training at several firms and garnering experience in a range of specialties. In 2019, Killion founded her eponymous design firm. “Since the beginning of my career in design, I’ve sought to leverage my industry expertise to benefit the Houston community, and the La Petite Maison Gala is the embodiment of this vision,” says Killion. “ASCF’s impact is remarkable, and their work providing housing and support services to families during their cancer journey is a lovely tie-in to our work as designers. Living in a home environment that’s safe and serene is life-altering, and ASCF provides homes like this for people enduring unimaginable hardship, free

of charge. I’m thrilled to rally around ASCF alongside such an accomplished group of Houston designers. Initial enthusiasm for the gala from these colleagues and the Houston community at large has been awe-inspiring, and we look forward to an incredible event in September.” Several dollhouse creators attended the La Petite Maison kick-off event on May 11, a Champagne Pop Up at The Avenue. Hosted by The Avenue owner and ASCF Board member Lyndsey Zorich, the event was a festive opportunity for Houstonians to meet the talent behind the dollhouses and learn more about the September gala and ASCF. Sponsorship levels for the La Petite Maison Gala range from $500 to $5,000 and tickets are $175 per guest. During the week leading up to the gala, attendees will enjoy the opportunity to view the completed dollhouses at sponsor locations.
