Gratitude. It runs deep here at Memorial Lifestyle Magazine. In this season of giving thanks, our tiny but mighty team is feeling it and expressing it more than ever. From our start during Covid, and now as we approach our two-year anniversary in December, we know without a doubt how blessed we are to be in a position to highlight good people doing great things each month. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. How do we multiply gratitude and feel its goodness? Spending quality time with those we love and giving back to others in a meaningful way are both scientifically proven to expand the feelings (and benefits!) of gratitude. While ambition, competition and slaying goals have purpose also, there is breathtaking value in being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who show and share their hearts daily. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of our community and city directly to you. I have started a daily practice of writing down three things I am grateful for each morning upon waking. This is such a simple habit, but it has been a gamechanger for me! Since 2005, a Houston non-profit has been a wonderful leading force in combating childhood obesity by teaching, inspiring and empowering the next generation to create healthy eating habits. With successful award-winning efforts such as their Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ program in schools nationwide and The VegOut! 30-Day Challenge, it was only natural for the Recipe for Success Foundation to build Hope Farms. This project offers a place where anyone can receive fresh food, knowledge and skills for healthy living. “We envision a world where healthy eating is the norm,” says Founder & CEO Gracie Cavnar. Cavnar’s vision began 17 years ago in a time where fast food chains were emerging on every corner, elementary schools had vending machines and childhood obesity rates increased. While marketing and advertising also helped create unhealthy eating habits for kids, Cavnar knew she had to help shape a culture where kids were excited about eating healthy foods. She began spreading awareness and partnering with 25 chefs. Together, they taught elementary school kids gardening and cooking skills. By the time Hope Farms broke ground in 2016, the foundation had helped 30,000 kids in Houston and beyond. Hope Farms opened so that kids’ parents and families could also have access to locally sourced foods and valuable knowledge to continue healthy eating habits. Hope Farms is a seven-acre vibrant urban farm providing affordable healthy food in one of Houston's ‘food deserts,' Sunny Side neighborhood. Residents have access to delicious fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, apples, beets, carrots, spinach and more. The farm also offers great educational programs from cooking classes to farmer training.

COOKING & GARDENING With the years-long success of their Seedto-Plate Nutrition Education™ program, the Recipe for Success Foundation added Cook the Harvest classes at Hope Farms. Adults and kids can create easy and healthy meals with recipes by celebrity chefs in the new Peg Lee Culinary Classroom on Saturdays. Their gardening classes teach the connection between Mother Earth, the sun, rain, birds, butterflies, bees and the meal for a better understanding of healthy foods.

On Saturday mornings, locals can purchase freshly harvested produce and eggs. They can even order days ahead through their Virtual Farm Store. Can’t make it out to the farm? Seasonal Farm Share Members can receive organic produce delivered to their home or office.

FARMER TRAINING Hope Farms offers a great farmer training program. Individuals learn about horticulture, crop planning, enterprise and supply chain management, farm accounting, marketing and business planning. In partnership with the USDA, partial and full scholarships are provided to qualifying Veterans to transform warriors into farmers. Since the beginning of the program, 28 farmers have been trained.

IMPACT “Welcoming dozens of eight-year-olds and seeing their eyes light up when visiting Hope Farms is what motivates us every day”, Cavnar mentions. To date, the Recipe for Success Foundation has served over 50,000 kids and families with their Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education™ program and raised $20 million to combat childhood obesity. Open for five months in Uptown Park, Rocambolesc is a dessert/coffee shop developed by world-renowned Spanish restaurateurs and owners of El Cella De Can Roca - a three Michelinstar restaurant in Spain. The Roca brothers, Joan, Josep and Jordi, partnered with husband and wife team, Maria Isabel and Nacho Torras and chef Roger Luis Roger of BCN and MAD. Together they created the first Rocambolesc in the United States as a public benefit corporation to help those with intellectual or developmental disabilities. “We have two godsons on the spectrum, and as with many parents, their main concern is what kind of purpose their kids will have in the future,” says Maria Isabel Torras. “For that reason, we decided to do more than simply give a financial contribution. After hearing about the war in Ukraine, Jonathan Levine, owner and chef of two Jonathan’s the Rub locations, knew he wanted to do something to help the people of Ukraine. He decided to host a one-time dinner and add a special menu during August that would benefit Daar Charitable Foundation. The dinner and special menu raised over $36,000 for relief efforts. Sam Levine, Jonathan’s son and manager of the Campbell Place location, admitted that hearing about the war was a pivotal moment for his dad. “We have family from Ukraine — we are of the people of Ukraine,” said Jonathan. “It’s natural for me, and we wanted to do something to support. We have been able to buy three huge cargo vans full of first-aid supplies and bulletproof vests from Poland and have them transported into Ukraine.”

Howdy Homemade Ice Cream in Katy recently celebrated its first anniversary. Owners Roderick Batson and Billboard Change Maker Award winner Trae Tha Truth started the Katy franchise with the vision of employing individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “Since we opened in 2021, we have employed 28 differently-abled individuals. Every day they are coached on soft skills and pushed to reach their fullest potential,” says store manager Dana Gatson. “Our goal is to show the community that our employees are just as capable of maintaining a job as anyone else.” Customers can choose from 18 flavors with a rotating stock of seasonal flavors. Erica Ragget, the founder of A 2nd Cup, learned about human trafficking in 2011 and knew she wanted to help and spread awareness. She started her pop up coffee shop to educate customers about human trafficking within the city, work with allies and uplift survivors through aftercare. In 2015, her dreams of a non-profit brick-and-mortar location came true in The Heights neighborhood. “The idea of human trafficking is overwhelming, and it’s easy to be like ‘Oh, that’s too much, I can’t even dip my toe into it,’ so we wanted to make that process easier for people,” Raggett said. Customers can now learn about human trafficking by reading material in the shop and by reading the walls, which are covered with statistics and anti-trafficking messages.

The second half of the 2022 baseball season has been a whirlwind for pitcher and fan-favorite Lance McCullers Jr. Coming off the injured list in September after a forearm injury, he hit his stride, throwing a season-high 11 strikeouts during a pivotal game against the Oakland A's. This feat helped the Astros clinch the American League West, earning a spot in the playoffs for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. McCullers has been an integral part of the Astros organization for over seven years, notably starting on the mound for game 7 of their famed 2017 World Series victory. When he began playing for the Astros in 2015, he and his wife Kara, both life-long animal enthusiasts, were invited to several animal adoption events in Houston. Newlyweds at the time (they had only been married for five months), the duo quickly realized that the overpopulation of animals is a severe problem in Houston and decided to use Lance's position as an athlete to raise awareness about the issue. Just one year into his major league career, the couple launched the Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation to help and advocate for stray and homeless animals. “We started the foundation eight years ago with a broad mission, but with the help we have received over the years, we have been

able to reach a lot of animal lives and help a lot of people, as well,” says Lance. “Our foundation really is a Houston foundation and we created it out of love for this city and the desire to give back to our community.” "The city of Houston has been so good to our family, so it is important to give back as much as we can." Partnering with other rescue organizations, the McCullers' foundation has transported over 75,000 animals from shelter euthanasia lists and provides medical assistance to animals that would otherwise be put down. The foundation is also debuting a new initiative to provide funding for adopted dogs to become service animals for military veterans. Most recently, in September, Lance partnered up with Astros teammates Jose Altuve and Kyle Tucker for the fourth annual Team Up charity event. Team Up raised over $370,000 for The Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation, The Sunshine Kids Foundation and the Kyle Tucker Foundation. "It was so nice having Team Up back for the first time since the pandemic," said Kara. "We did not know what to expect coming out of the pandemic, but we had so many people come out to support this year, and it turned out to be our most successful event to date." When they are not busy with baseball season or their charity, the McCullers enjoy family time with their daughter Ava. Both Florida natives, the couple has been together since high school, saying that after only a few weeks of dating as teenagers, they

And although professional athletes are seen as celebrities with lives full of glitz and glamour, Kara stresses that going through a baseball season is a roller coaster for the entire family. "We are very blessed to be in the baseball life. It is a very long season (the longest of any professional sport), and there are many times when players are challenged physically, emotionally and mentally," she says. "When your spouse experiences anything like that, you go through it with them." The family of three is definitely looking forward to downtime during the upcoming off-season. HOW DO YOU FIND JOY IN THE LITTLE THINGS? It is so easy for me. I am one of those people who, when you look at a situation or issue, am always trying to find what is good. There are a lot of times when things are hard, but I am joyful and like to make other people happy. If I pass a little bit of joy to someone, I feel like it comes back to me and changes my day and everything around me. I projected it out, and now I receive it. We have a short time on this earth, and I am so grateful to be able to impact people positively.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR RIGHT NOW? Every day I write down three things I am grateful for.

I started that in 2020, because it seemed like if things could get worse - they did. I remember during that time, my dad had two heart attacks and so now, every day on my gratitude list, one thing I am grateful for is that my dad is still here. My boys and I are such a team. We went through me being a single mom and trying to get this business off the ground. We are like the three amigos and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t talk to my kids. I recently remarried, and we are like the Brady Bunch with three kids from his previous relationship and my three boys. I am so grateful to have this next phase of my life with a blended family.
