almost a year into quarantine. This time last year I was living in New York City – a senior majoring in musical theatre. I was performing regularly and attending the latest Broadway shows. I was taking for granted the expediency and ease of art. The world turned upside down overnight, and everything seemed to change. As medical professionals rallied on the frontlines, art came to our rescue in new and different ways. The virtual world connected us and gave us a sense of a ‘new’ normalcy. Art has managed to keep us grounded and sane (and even inspired!) through it all. Now, with 20/20 hindsight, the one constant for me through all the ups and downs of life is the enduring value of art. Like an old familiar song, art offers us an escape, a reckoning, a clean slate. I hope you’ll feel the love of art in this issue. From rising country star Parker McCollum,

OH, G LOW ON SEISMIQUE, A 40,000-SQUARE-FOOT ART-FUELED EXPERIENTIAL MUSEUM, OPENED IN WEST HOUSTON IN LATE DECEMBER. The 40-plus unique exhibits overflowing with dazzling displays of light generated by 9 million LEDs, color, sound, and natural elements are designed to capture the attention of a broad range of audiences. The first-to-market arts and entertainment space features works from over two dozen established and emerging artists – many of whom are Texas-based – along with advanced technological elements like projection mapping, holograms, augmented reality, light mapping, motion tracking, gamification, and more. Though visitors will see and experience multiple art forms in a playful setting, each of Seismique’s installations shares the common denominator of being a dynamic expression of visual art brought to life by a bevy of serious artists. “I am really looking forward to seeing the expressions on peoples’ faces when they experience Seismique for the first time; I liken it to the equivalent of walking through a portal and into an alternative universe that is a feast for the senses,” said Seismique creator Steve Kopelman, a seasoned veteran of the immersive experience and escape game industries. seismique.com

TALENT, GRIT, AND PERSEVERANCE LEAD PARKER MCCOLLUM TO THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT.

IN 2010, A SANDY-HAIRED KID WITH SIX STRINGS AND A DREAM SAT IN HIS BEDROOM IN CONROE, LEARNING TO WRITE SONGS AND HOPING TO FIND HIS VOICE. Parker McCollum, now 28 years old, will be the first to tell you that as a teenager he didn’t know if he had “what it takes” to be a country music star – but he was determined to find out. “I told my mom that I wasn’t going to go to college but was going to try to do this and sign a major record deal one day. I don’t think she believed me – which looking back at the way I was at that age – there probably wasn’t a whole lot of confidence instilled in her by me,” laughed McCollum. He admits that his friends at College Park High School in The Woodlands, where he graduated in 2011, were also a bit concerned when he quit playing football, basketball and baseball to have more time to play guitar.

“Everyone thought I was crazy. I remember all my buddies were mad that I wasn’t playing sports and that I thought I could play country music… but they don’t think it’s crazy anymore,” he added. After graduating from high school, McCollum made the move to Austin to immerse himself in the live music scene as he continued honing his craft. With an incomparable work ethic and a poet’s heart, others on the Texas Music Scene quickly recognized he had the formula for success and there was no stopping him. Since then, McCollum has taken the country music industry by storm, first building an unprecedented fan base of 200-thousand social media followers, selling out shows across the state and promoting his brand of honest country music with two highly acclaimed albums – “The Limestone Kid” which he released in 2015, followed by “Probably Wrong” in 2017. He also signed a management deal with Texas country music veteran Randy Rogers, who he credits for helping him realize his full potential. “Randy is the one who made me write down my goals when I was afraid to admit how big I wanted our efforts to pay off,” he added. Soon after, McCollum had his own tour bus, was playing across the country and sold out Billy Bob’s Texas – the world’s largest honky tonk – not once, but twice. “My handprints are now on the wall at Billy Bob’s and that’s just unbelievable,” he said.

Reba was standing side stage; Keith Urban; Dierks Bentley; Carrie Underwood – they were all right there – shoulder to shoulder. I never get nervous – never. I always just act like I’ve been there, but my heart was beating out of my chest. It was so surreal. I remember lying in bed that night and thinking – if you never get to do anything else – you did that.” While the pandemic halted live shows for much of 2020, it meant McCollum could take some time to relax after years of nonstop touring. He’s found time to visit the family ranch, fish, work on his deer stand, and most importantly, get back to Conroe for frequent family visits. “My mom is in Fort Worth and my dad is in Austin, but their brothers and sisters and everyone else in my family still live in Conroe. Leaders like you become catalysts for change when they do three things: pick a problem to address, invite others to join them, and do what they can where they are.

1. Pick a Problem to Address A leader can never become a catalyst until he or she first takes ownership of the problem they wish to solve. You cannot rally people to a cause that you aren’t willing to own, especially these days; people know when a leader is being half-hearted, and they don’t respect it. When you pick a problem to solve or a cause to rally around, you must have conviction in order to succeed. Over the years, I’ve learned that whenever I feel a sense of conviction about an issue, I need to start moving in the direction I believe I should go, even if I’m uncertain. Action creates ownership, and ownership creates credibility with people. And you need that credibility because transformation cannot be done by one person alone—we all need people to join us on the journey.

2. Invite Others to Join You When you’ve settled on the problem you want to tackle you should immediately begin looking for others to join you. In the book, Rob and I recommend starting with friends and family; you already have influence with them, and chances are you’re of like mind in many areas. Go to those family members who frequently ask you for advice or seek your opinion on personal matters, as you likely have greater influence with them. To move beyond family, however, you’ll need to take a leap of faith and begin sharing your passion for solving the problem with other people. Passion attracts, and when people come to you with interest, don’t be afraid to ask them what they think or invite them to improve your ideas. Empowering people to help you creates a bond, and once that bond is established, you will quickly discover who you can truly work with and invite them to take action with you. CONTINUED >

3. Do What You Can Where You Are Action is the final step. It doesn’t have to be big or grand; it doesn’t even have to be guaranteed of success. Nothing happens in life until someone does something, and once you take your first step, the next step will come into focus. Remember that transformation is a process, not an event. It takes time and repeated action to bring about positive change. So focus on purpose, not perfection, and do what you know to do. These three steps may seem too simple, but I assure you they work. The goal of all transformational movements is making things better however
