asked to predict the roller coaster ride that is 2020. Despite the turbulence and the new dynamic of social interaction, the lesson that keeps bubbling up for me is this: silver linings are real! Since assuming the helm as Publisher of Memorial Lifestyle Magazine in June, I have had the pleasure of meeting so many local business owners and heard firsthand of their hardships and bravery in navigating these unprecedented times. retrospect, most might have placed a hefty bet that Chicken Little was right after all. But to our pleasant surprise, the sky didn’t fall, and the sun continues to shine! The common thread in these stories has been folks’ unwavering ability to adapt and pivot and find endless ways to do good. And they also managed to keep their families healthy and their businesses afloat in the process. We also all found new ways to have fun and to connect intimately, despite the ‘distance’ theme of the year. For me, the pandemic experience has given me HOPE. I have more hope than ever before that the tide is turning - that when the dust settles, we will find ourselves fortified. Why? Because great things happen to good people when we keep our compass pointed in the direction of our hearts. In this issue you will find stories filled with goodness and heart, offering a glimpse into the lives of Katherine Webb-McCarron and Jumper Maybach. We round out the issue with My

DISH SOCIETY IS KNOWN FOR ITS FRESH FOOD, CASUAL ATMORED QUINOA
SPHERE, AND COMMITMENT TO SEASONAL FARM-TO-TABLE FARE. With several locations in Houston, including one in Memorial Green, the restaurant is a local favorite because of its outdoor seating areas and great seasonal menus. When Dish Society opened in 2014, it was one of the first casual farm-totable restaurants in Houston. Although the term farm-to-table has become more commonplace, the restaurant’s dedication to serving the best local food has remained steadfast. Dish Society might be as well known for their side dishes, like the Citrusy Quinoa Relish shown here, as they are for their entrees, and their ever-changing menu keeps guests coming back for more.

At Dish Society, it’s stuffed into avocado halves, paired with sautéed salmon or served as a standalone side. Store leftover vinaigrette in the fridge for up to 1 week. It’s delicious as salad

BEN WORKMAN, ALSO KNOWN AS JUMPER MAYBACH, BEGAN HIS ARTISTIC JOURNEY LATER THAN MOST. After dealing with a tumultuous time in his life, he turned to art to help him overcome his hardships and more importantly, spread his message of love, peace, and community. It didn’t take long for the art world to notice him, and soon Maybach began showing his work all over the globe from Dubai to Venice and was also featured in the Galerie Du Louvre. Best known for his use of bright colors and unique abstract designs, Maybach was crowned “the Jackson Pollock of the 21st century” during a gallery show at the prestigious Alliance Française in 2017. A Texan at heart, the artist returned to Houston to open up his first gallery in 2019. Maybach’s beautiful boutique in glitzy Uptown Park brings the vision for his brand full circle. “It’s a beautiful, idyllic space - a hybrid gallery/showroom/boutique. It is elegant and accessible, as well as classy and modern,” says the artist. “We continue to work with a multitude of other creatives and businesses, and have many exciting things planned. We look forward to safer times.” After a successful splashy opening last fall, the gallery exhibits not only Maybach’s art, but art from other well-known artists, is also a venue for performance art, and is home to Maybach’s line of luxury home goods and clothing. Because of the pandemic, Maybach has scaled back on in person events, and his team has relied heavily on appointments and digital resources to keep sales going. The realization of opening his own boutique is part of Maybach’s goal to make art more accessible “beyond pieces in showrooms, galleries, and museums.” His clothing and home goods are immediately recognizable, emblazoned with his bold designs. Recently one of the handbags from his Dark Matrix series was recognized in the 2020 Design Excellence Awards by the Accessories Council. This nonprofit seeks to stimulate consumer awareness and demand for fashion industry accessory products. The prestigious award is given to less than 20 products, so recognition in this competitive industry is quite a feat. “We (my team) were thrilled when we received the news,” said Maybach. “Recognition like this was certainly something we strived for, and we have been working nonstop to bring the Jumper Maybach® luxury goods line into being.” jumpermaybach.com

bullet journaling 101 ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
PHOTOGRAPHY ESTÉE JANSSENS
Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it
can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off.
With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute,
anything we can find to streamline our obligations (and our thoughts) can be a lifesaver! Enter: bullet journaling. It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.
