The Explore Issue

Sail with Tailored Financial Guidance

Let’s Explore

We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. I’ll be the first to admit that I fall into the trap all the time; the trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me.

But the truth is, that’s really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life.

We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner and even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and openended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.

In 2022, I took a spur-of-the-moment sailing trip in Croatia. As a Type A planner, it was completely out of the norm for me. But it ended up being one of my most memorable trips to date because it was so spontaneous. I went cliff jumping and ziplining, I drank sangria every day and I ended up meeting three of my now best friends. Since meeting, we’ve kept in touch and even plan trips with one another. While you’re reading this, I will be preparing for our summer 2024 trip to Austria and Hungary.

In this issue, we’ve featured local business that we think are worth exploring and getting to know more about. Since it’s summertime, they’re also all businesses that will help you make the most of your days in the sunshine. We hope this issue inspires you to explore — whether it’s in the Medina County community by visiting a new restaurant or in the kitchen with a new-to-you recipe — and enjoy this beautiful time of year with the ones you love.

Until next month,

July 2024

PATIO SEASON

LADY CAROLINE LETS YOU LEAVE LAND AND BLAND BEHIND

Lady Caroline — a 120-foot, multi-level luxury vessel taking the place of the retiring, 40-year-old Nautica Queen cruise ship — cruised into Cleveland in May 2023.

Over the course of its inaugural run, Lady Caroline welcomed more than 17,000 guests during more than 100 memory-making voyages along Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River.

Helmed by Captain Jim Dale, who sailed with the Nautica Queen for roughly a decade, Lady Caroline boasts 15,000 square feet of fun for passengers to enjoy. Three climate-controlled, enclosed decks feature elegant dining spaces for brunch, lunch and dinner, with a chic dance floor and lounge area for guests to cut loose on the third deck.

Above it all sits an open-air observation deck offering panoramic views of the Cleveland skyline — made even more exciting for guests who catch a glimpse of passing barges, historic bridges or even fireworks in the sky from a Guardians’ home baseball game.

“We’re raising the bar,” Captain Dale says. “We want to provide guests with the best possible experience from the time they make a reservation to the time they head back to their cars. A Lady Caroline cruise is about seeing the sights, for sure, but it’s also about food, service, ambiance and fun.”

“That’s exactly why Lady Caroline is such perfect space to enjoy with friends, family and colleagues,” says operations manager Ellen Kelley. “We say every cruise is a celebration, and there’s a celebration for every cruise. Our team can provide all the party elements, including the backdrop, meal, drinks and music. All you need is your guest list.”

Private charters run on weekdays (based on availability) and Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings through the season. Guests can host reunions, corporate gatherings, holiday functions and fundraisers for more than 200 people with the boat all to themselves and choice of a bountiful, customizable buffet or heavy hors d’oeuvres.

The cruise ship also makes for a romantic wedding destination. Whether you’re looking to board with a small group of close family and friends or scheduling a grand affair with up to 200 wedding guests, Lady Caroline’s attentive crew will go above and beyond to make your day special.

Being involved in memorable moments for passengers is something Captain Dale says he cherishes. He’s officiated more than 150 weddings as a captain over the years and looks forward to these special connections he’s made with his guests.

“Navigating Lady Caroline and bringing smiles to our guests’ faces is the perfect match for me both personally and professionally,” he says. “It’s gratifying showing a side of the city some people have never experienced.”

Cruises run from early spring through early winter. For voyagers looking for more than breathtaking views and good food, the Lady Caroline hosts themed cruises through the year — including its popular Yacht Rock Karaoke Brunches and the annual Air Show Viewing Dinner, where you get an unmatched view of the iconic event.

“Every cruise is different, that’s the fun of it,” Captain Dale says. “I can’t wait to discover what each new day holds and share that appreciation with fans of our Great Lake.”

Lady Caroline sails Tuesday through Sunday, with brunch, lunch and dinners on select days. Tickets range from $0 (children under 2) to $89.95. To schedule your voyage or learn more about private charters, visit LadyCaroline.com.

Exploring Your Own Backyard

RELISH IN YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE WITH NEW GOODS FROM TWIN OAK BARNS

Sometimes the best form of exploration is that of your own backyard. Yes, we literally mean your property’s outdoor space. Whether you have a finely manicured lawn or a pool and patio situation, summer is the perfect season to spend time soaking up some sunshine and appreciating Mother Nature.

In order to do so, consider making your outdoor space an extension of your home so that you look forward to spending time there. Whether that looks like a new outdoor furniture set (because no one likes mildewed chair cushions) or some updated decor, you’re going to want high-quality, durable products that you won’t have to replace each year. We recommend taking the short trek south to Twin Oaks Barns in Millersburg for all your outdoor living needs.

Twin Oaks Barns began in 1973, when Melvin Miller started building little red barns in his backyard on weekends. As demand increased, he found that he had to work more days and bring on more help. Flash forward to 2024, and Twin Oaks is the oldest shed manu facturer in the Millersburg area.

Over the last 50 years, Twin Oaks has also expanded its product line to include every thing you could ever need for your outdoor space; this includes outdoor lawn furniture,

“Sometimes the best form of exploration is that of your own backyard.”

birdfeeders and birding items, pet houses, cupolas, weathervanes, pots, planters and so much more. Plus, many of their products are made from poly vinyl — a durable material that is crafted using recycled plastics. We should also mention that all poly vinyl lawn furniture come with a lifetime warranty.

While Twin Oaks’ still manufactures most of the sheds and barns, they do source some products from local suppliers that utilize only the longest-lasting materials and hardware. Additionally, all of Twin Oaks’ products come in a variety of colors and custom options so that they’re perfect for your home.

Let’s dive more into Twin Oaks’ selection of outdoor furniture because they offer pieces that will last much longer than your average, run-of-the-mill lawn chairs. When it comes to chairs specifically, Twin Oaks’ has an assortment of Adirondack chairs, rocking chairs, lounge chairs and outdoor dining chairs that are available in every color of the rainbow. Additionally, Twin Oaks offers poly vinyl benches, gliders (instead of rocking, these chairs or benches glide) and swings. Finally, the shop has countless furniture accessories and add-ons like planters, footrests, coffee tables and end tables.

An additional outdoor furniture product that we love from Twin Oaks is their poly vinyl outdoor dining table. Twin Oaks offers every shape and size of outdoor dining tables, making it so easy to find one that will fit the size of your outdoor space and your family.

Finally, when visiting Twin Oaks, don’t miss checking out their selection of weather vanes. These can be the perfect addition to your house or shed, and Twin Oaks has well over 100 to choose from. Some of our favorites include the hummingbird weathervane, Victorian arrow weathervane, wine bottle weathervane and the handing bald eagle weathervane.

To learn more about Twin Oaks, visit TwinOaksBarnsLLC.com. Also, visit Twin Oaks’ Millersburg location at 3337 US-62. The store is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please note that Twin Oaks is closed on Saturdays from the months of January to March.

Shedding Light on Lightscaping

ARTICLE BY EMILY SHEA-OWEN

We’d like to introduce you to Budget Lightscapes, a northeast Ohio business specializing in professional low voltage LED landscape lighting design, installation and repair services. In 2005, Chris Ursetti founded the company on the traditions of quality and excellence. This founding legacy continues to govern his business practices and illuminates the pathway of success that makes Budget Lightscapes’ services shine and brilliantly reflects their established reputation as northeast Ohio’s premier nightscape experts.

What is lightscaping, you ask? And why is it important?

Lightscaping — also known as landscape lighting — is a system of outdoor lighting that provides increased safety, security and a beautiful ambiance to your property’s exterior. It’s available for both residential and commercial properties.

When it comes to lightscape design, the options are endless and highly customizable to your needs. When you consider where your property could use added light, think about these common areas: entryways, front doors, deck steps and railings, driveways, garages, backyard living spaces, patios, pools and pathways.

Next, consider why you’d like to illuminate these spaces and what type of lighting fits the your goals. If you’re interested in upgrading your outdoor security, consider that pathway lighting helps to prevent accidents on steps and walkways, and discourages intruders and wildlife. If energy consumption and affordability are concerns, keep in mind that Budget Lightscapes offers energy-efficient, cost-effective low voltage LED lighting solutions that use 75% less energy than halogen, which are better for both your wallet and the environment.

“Budget Lightscapes’ team provides customers with 100% satisfaction guarantee and are committed to meeting the highest of industry standards through advanced training and continuous professional development.”

Finally, consider the type of lighting that could enhance your property while aligning with your lighting goals. Check out this handy guide:

• Grazing: This involves positioning beams of light so that they project against a surface, such as tree bark or brick wall.

• Shadowing: This type of lighting is placed in front of a focal point to cast shadows onto the surface behind it.

• Silhouetting: To create silhouettes, the light will be placed beneath a tree, shrub or bush so that the shape can be seen against a dark background.

• Pool and fountain lighting: Water features have a lot of potential when it comes to creating dramatic lighting effects. Placing lighting under the water can illuminate the feature and create a striking focal point.

• Downlighting and uplighting: Placing lighting at the top or the base of the home or feature can illuminate it without being too overwhelming. When it comes to landscape lighting, experts recommend not to overdo it.

Whether you’ve looked at this list and know exactly how you’d like to enhance your property, or you’re not sure what your property needs to look its best — Budget Lightscapes’ professionals are available to help you. Their team provides customers with a 100% satisfaction guarantee and are committed to meeting the highest of industry standards through advanced training and continuous professional development.
