As February rolls around, I always find myself in a familiar tug-of-war. On one hand, I want to resist the pull of another commercialized holiday. On the other, I can’t help but savor the sweet moments it brings — an excuse to celebrate love in all its forms.

Do we opt for a Valentine’s Day date out or settle in for a cozy night at home? A handwritten card or a heartfelt kind word? For me, it’s usually a mix of both. Each of us will find our own ways to mark the occasion, shaped by our unique preferences and personalities. But what unites us all is the opportunity to remind those around us just how much they mean to us.
This month’s issue is dedicated to helping you do just that — celebrating and highlighting the best of what’s to love in our local community.
As we navigate the lingering chill of winter and the promise of spring’s arrival, let’s take a moment to come together with the people who matter most. Whether they’re in your home, down the street or across the community, February is a wonderful time to connect and share love.
“Love local” isn’t just about supporting the businesses in your area—it’s about cherishing what’s near to you in every sense. So, why not grab a cup of coffee at Cool Beans Cafe and enjoy a game night by the fire with your family? Or pick up a bottle of wine from H2 Huth and Harris Wine Merchants and some snacks from Nibble for a relaxed movie night in.
At the heart of everything we do is the belief that together, we’re stronger. Every month, the stories shared within these pages prove that again and again.
Thank you for allowing us to be part of the life you’re building. Our greatest hope is that this issue helps you love it just a little more than before.
Here’s to a February filled with love — both local and beyond!
Until next month,
February 2026

We pride ourselves in raising hormone and soy free Wagyu beef. Wagyu is a treasure trove of nutrients including protein, iron, B12 trace minerals and much more. It contains a high proportion of omega-3 and omega six which are essential for heart health and can contribute to overall wellness. Due to its rich flavor and tenderness, smaller portions can be incredibly satisfying, allowing diners to enjoy high-quality beef with potentially fewer calories.

HOW MAIN STREET MEDINA BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER, SEASON AFTER SEASON
ARTICLE BY ERIN BAKA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MAIN STREET MEDINA

There is something about uptown Medina that slows you down in the best possible way. Brick storefronts, park benches that invite lingering and the steady rhythm of locals greeting one another create a sense that this is not just a place you pass through — it’s a place you belong.
The historic Medina Public Square remains alive and continues to be a destination thanks in part to Main Street Medina. Since 2007, Main Street Medina has existed to lead historic preservation, support economic sustainability and guide the continued evolution of the district through events that have become a destination, on repeat.
Medina’s festivities start this month with the ever-popular Ice Festival from Friday, Feb. 20 to Monday, Feb. 23, presented by Elegant Ice Creations . During this four-day event, visitors can experience live ice sculpting, both individual and team competitions, transforming the square into an open-air gallery. Intricately carved ice sculptures line the storefronts, creating a one-of-a-kind winter backdrop that invites strolling, photos and plenty of awe.
As winter gives way to spring, the energy continues with the return of the Medina Square Farmers Market, taking place every Saturday from May 16 to October 10. The market is a celebration of 90+ local vendors featuring fresh breads and baked goods, farm-grown produce, meats and cheese, locally made rubs, butters and handmade pieces by local artisans and much more.
Then, kick off the summer with Main Street Medina’s annual Kids Day on Saturday, June 6. Local police, EMT and fire departments are on site throughout the day, offering safety demonstrations and opportunities for kids to interact with the people who help keep the community safe. Add in music, dancing and a variety of family-friendly activities, and the square comes alive with “schools out” energy.
As summer winds down, back-to-school season gets a creative twist with the South Town Arts & Music Festival on Saturday, Aug. 22. Stretching south of the Square, this vibrant art walk brings together creativity, community and sound in a way that feels distinctly Medina. With 12 bands performing from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., the district transforms into an all-day music experience, inviting locals and visitors alike to wander through art displays, explore nearby shops and enjoy live performances throughout the day and into the evening.
Autumn arrives in full color with Fall Fest on Saturday, Sept. 26. This event

is everything people love about the season wrapped into one festive day on Medina Square. From pumpkin painting and family-friendly activities, the event invites visitors to slow down and savor the season. A crowd-favorite chili contest adds a friendly competitive spirit, drawing people together over warm bowls and shared traditions.
Perhaps the most special and best known event of the year is the annual Candlelight Walk. Taking place from Friday, Nov. 20 to Sunday, Nov. 22, the cherished tradition officially kicks off the holiday season in Medina. Enjoy extended holiday shopping on the square, seasonal treats and the unmistakable magic of everything the district has to offer. Families gather to visit Santa, watch the lights parade and take part in the highly anticipated lighting of the Christmas tree.
In addition to the larger signature events, smaller gatherings sprinkled throughout the year offer even more opportunities to experience Medina Public Square. One popular favorite is Coffee & Cars, which draws an impressive 150 vehicles and brings car enthusiasts together for a relaxed morning of conversation, coffee and classic style. Events like Ladies Night Out add another layer of fun, encouraging friends to shop, dine and enjoy special promotions throughout the district.
Behind every event, storefront and seasonal tradition is the ongoing work of Main Street Medina, supported by dedicated members, volunteers and community partners Through membership and volunteerism, individuals and businesses play a direct role in shaping the future of the district — from promoting events and supporting local merchants to preserving the historic character that makes the square so special.
These efforts help ensure not only the success of beloved traditions, but also the economic vitality of downtown Medina. By fostering a strong, walkable business district and encouraging community involvement, Main Street Medina continues to create a place where history is honored, businesses can thrive and the square remains a vibrant gathering space. ARTICLE BY EMILY SHEA-OWEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE DOG WIZARD
The Dog Wizard Offers Training Built on Positive Reinforcement and Trust
Loving local isn’t just about supporting the people who make Medina thrive — it extends to the four-legged companions who call this community home, too. The Dog Wizard is a locally owned, women-run business devoted to helping Medina County dogs (and their humans) live happier, more harmonious lives.
In August 2025, owner Jen Hacker took the reins of The Dog Wizard’s Medina location after discovering a deep passion for dog training. What began as a curiosity quickly became a calling, leading her to complete extensive coursework and earn her credentials as a licensed professional trainer. Today, Jen brings patience, expertise and a genuine love for dogs to every session, helping families strengthen their bond with their pets through clear communication, trust and consistency.
Training with The Dog Wizard can be broken down into a few simple steps. To begin, all new clients complete a free evaluation to assess their dog’s needs and create a personalized plan that fits their lifestyle. Using the information from this evaluation, a customized training plan is put together. After the training program is complete, The Dog Wizard provides ongoing support like tools, guidance and graduate classes to maintain progress and reinforce skills at home.
The Dog Wizard’s training services are broken down into two categories: obedience and behavior. The obedience training services include:
• Group training: These programs give your dog the chance to build obedience skills while safely socializing with other dogs. The Dog Wizard offers group classes for puppies up to five months old, as well as sessions designed for dogs of all ages. Each class provides an engaging, supportive environment where you and your pup can strengthen your bond while mastering essential commands together.
• Private dog training: For individualized coaching, The Dog Wizard offers custom private sessions. First, Jen will closely observe your dog to understand its habits. Next, she’ll establish a training plan made just for them.
• Board and train: Ideal for busy families that don’t have the ability to attend classes, this program allows your dog to receive professional training while being boarded at The Dog Wizard’s Medina facility. Board and train programs range from seven to 21 days — choose your time frame and let Jen and her team do their magic.

“The Dog Wizard provides ongoing support like tools, guidance and graduate classes to maintain progress and reinforce skills at home.”

• American Kennel Club training: This puppy course features practical exercises and engaging activities to nurture a deep owner-pet relationship. After completion of the course, your dog will be a certified AKC S.T.A.R. puppy.
• Specialty training: These courses range from scent detection, therapy prep and baby safety classes. They are open to any breed and any age.
The Dog Wizard’s behavior training services are:
• Dog separation anxiety training: The Dog Wizard’s separation anxiety training guides pet owners in helping their dogs build the confidence they need to spend time alone.
• Adopted/rescue dog training: If you’re the proud owner of an adopted or rescue dog, you’ll know that these pets are often accompanied by a unique set of difficulties. The Dog Wizard’s

training plans are customized for each canine’s personal history and behavioral needs so you can have a confident and well-mannered companion throughout your life together.
• Aggression training: In some cases, your canine friend may show unexpected signs of aggression or be outright aggressive. Despite there being some misconceptions that such behaviors are hardwired, Jen and her team understand that they often arise from fear, stress or lack of proper socialization. Through this training program, she can pinpoint and address the aggression to resolve the issue.
• Problem solving training: If your dog struggles with barking, resource guarding, chewing, jumping, begging, digging, leash pulling, marking or more, Jen and her team can help. Their specialized training for common puppy problems uses positive reinforcement to shape desirable dog conduct.
This list of obedience and behavioral training services is just the beginning. When working with The Dog Wizard, everything is personalized to your dog and future goals.
What’s more, is that when your training program ends, you won’t be left alone with zero resources. The Dog Wizard understands that learning new skills is just the beginning of any training because reinforcing those skills regularly is just as important as the initial training program. That’s why they offer lifetime support for you and your dog. After completing your desired training program, you can attend graduate support classes twice a month to reinforce skills, foster socialization and nurture strong bonds.

Angela and her family when they moved in Medina County in 2014.

LOCAL MORTGAGE BANKER SHARES HER APPROACH TO LENDING AND LIVING LOCALLY
BY EMILY SHEA-OWEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGELA NICHOLSON
Rooted in Medina County for more than a decade, CF Bank Senior Mortgage Banker Angela Nicholson is as passionate about community connection as she is about helping people feel confident in their financial decisions. From volunteering with area nonprofits and supporting small businesses to exploring Northeast Ohio’s trails and discovering new favorite restau rants, she’s deeply invested in the place she calls home.
In this Q&A, she shares how she stays involved locally, what brings her joy both personally and professionally and why thoughtful, people-first lending can make a meaningful difference for families and communities alike.
How long have you lived in Medina County?
My family and I have lived in Medina County for going on 12 years. We moved to Sharon Township in 2014 to accommodate our newly blended family and the kids’ proximity to their schools and extracurriculars.

Tell me a little bit about your profession and the services you offer.
I’m a professional mortgage lender. I love what I do, and this is one of the few professions with no up-front fees. Society is getting closer to pushing a button and having almost anything appear instantly — but you don’t know what you don’t know. Mortgages, market leverage, equity, assets, rules, regulations and evolving products are constantly changing, and I’m always learning so I can apply that knowledge to better serve the people I help. Whether you are in a new mortgage, paid one off years ago, are swimming in debt or are not even sure you can get a mortgage, we can have a conversation now and set you up well for the future.
What are the benefits of refinancing? Why should people consider a new mortgage in 2026?
Refinancing can help restructure debt, access equity for improvements, investments, or a rainy day, and create more predictable cash flow.

In 2026, the conversation shouldn’t just be about rates; think strategy, timing and using home equity intentionally. Whether you’re planning for retirement, supporting a family change or positioning yourself more strategically for the years ahead, it’s a good idea to look at your options.
What about your job brings you joy?
What brings me the most joy about my job is solving problems and helping ease stress for others. I genuinely love listening to people’s stories and understanding what matters most to them. Being able to make homeownership and the mortgage process feel approachable, accessible and achievable is incredibly fulfilling for me.
What is one professional and personal goal you have for 2026?
In 2026 I’m focusing on fewer surprises and more peace of mind. It’s not enough to save people money — I want to know they feel heard, seen and well-served.
Do you volunteer locally?
Yes, I’ve hosted events and volunteered with Maggie’s Mission, Access the Arts, Medina County Chamber Charities, Hope and Healing, Hope Recovery, 100+ Women Who Care Medina County Senior & Adult Services, Habitat for Humanity, Feeding Medina County and Cups Collective (formerly Cups Cafe). I also serve on committees and boards, helping plan events and make a difference behind the scenes.
“I care a lot about the people I meet, and take pride in giving honest, competitive options.”
— Angela Nicholson
I also plan to be more intentional and protective of my personal time, making space for family, health and the things that recharge me. When I’m grounded and slow down to be present in my own life, I show up better for the people who trust me professionally.
What are some ways that you like to stay active within the community?
I love reading local publications to see what others are up to — it’s a great way to discover how I can support them and stay active in the community. Whether shopping, eating, live entertainment or needing a service, actively engaging with others in the community helps me feel connected.
What are some of your favorite restaurants in Medina County?
My Medina go-tos are Monarca Cantina for the atmosphere, great people, top notch margaritas and fresh food; Tres Potrillos for tableside guac and the patio; and Edamame Ramen because they have a vegan option for me.
How do you enjoy spending your free time?
When home, I like to read, play nerdy board games, woodwork and listen to music. I especially love being outside, walking, hiking, running, kayaking, swimming and camping — they’re all my favorites.
Recently I brought home four domestic ducks, Anconas, so learning all about ducks and seeing their quirky personalities has been fun. Fair warning, once you hear them quack, you will want some too.
What are some of your favorite local businesses in Medina County?
Bella Moxie Company on North Court Street in Medina is very dear to me. It’s great for shopping and art workshops, plus it’s a small business that really goes above and beyond to support artists and give back.
Marigold Wellness on Sharon Circle is another of my favorite spaces. With a salon, cafe, spa and

boutique, stopping there is always a pick-me-up.
And in no particular order, Sweets and Geeks, Black Cat Book Store, Accelerated Fitness, Cole’s Auto Repair, Boyert’s Greenhouse and The Farmer’s Table are some of my other favorite local businesses. What’s a piece of advice that changed your life?
Order dessert first. When I was a kid and we would eat out, my grandma would always order a piece of pie, with a literal twinkle in her eye, to come before the meal. If you’ve never done it, it is life changing. No more being hangry waiting for the meal.
But too, it’s ok to treat yourself and make time for a reward, because you know you’re going to do the responsible stuff too.

Not every date night needs to involve reservations or an elaborate itinerary. With a little creativity, you can create magical moments right at home. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or just want to reconnect, here are three ideas for unforgettable at-home date nights.

Transform your backyard or balcony into a dreamy picnic spot! Spread out a cozy blanket, add a few fluffy pillows, and hang string lights or fairy lights for ambiance. A small fire pit or lanterns can also add a romantic glow.
Pack a picnic basket with finger foods and a bottle of wine or sparkling water. Don’t forget a decadent dessert like chocolate-dipped strawberries.
Lay back and stargaze, identifying constellations or making wishes on shooting stars. To make it extra romantic, bring a bluetooth speaker and play soft music.
Unleash your inner artists with one of these three fun and interactive dates. Grab some inexpensive canvases, brushes, and acrylic paints from the craft store. Don’t forget aprons or old clothes to protect against spills!
• Paint each other’s portraits for a mix of laughter and creativity.
• Work on a collaborative paintingeach person adds their own touch to a single canvas.
• Try a themed painting challenge, like recreating your favorite memory together. Pair this date with a cheese platter and wine and don’t worry about being “good’ at painting - it’s all about enjoying the process together.
Start the day with love by turning breakfast into an indulgent experience. Prepare a tray with a DIY breakfast charcuterie board. Include mini pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bacon, and pastries. Add small bowls of toppings like syrup, Nutella, or whipped cream.
Mix up mimosas or serve coffee with flavored syrups and whipped cream for a café vibe. Then, snuggle up in bed and watch a favorite movie or TV series.
