The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. In my family, I grew up making fried pizza dough each year on Christmas Eve. We served the lightly salted fried dough with marinara sauce, all sorts of cheeses and meats, olives and pickled vegetables. We even coated some of the fried dough in cinnamon and sugar for dessert. I still make the drive up to my parent's house each Christmas Eve to celebrate this tradition with them and plan to continue it each year when I start a family of my own. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread cheer. We’ve featured the impeccable Galaxy Restaurant in Wadsworth as well as a few other local businesses and one Hinckley-based organization that we think you'll love. Until next month (and next year!),

Make holiday entertaining easy with these styling food hacks that look impressive but are simple to create. If you don't have time to bake a dessert but want to serve something that doesn't look store bought, simply top it with berries, herbs, a sauce or a holiday prop to give it a little something extra. We made a trip to a local grocery store and purchased most of these items, and after some simple assembling and minimal baking, we were able to create a beautiful, eye-catching holiday spread.

HOLIDAY CHARCUTERIE BOARD Why not create a unique holiday charcuterie board in the shape of a Christmas tree or snowman. It looks impressive and was a quick assembly. For this look, a few trimmed evergreen clippings from the backyard served as a great edging for the board. With a variety of cheeses, berries, nuts and olives, this tasty display makes the perfect statement board. For an added touch, use a cookie cutter to add a cheese star to the top.

NEW YORK CHEESECAKE This inexpensive cheesecake was purchased at locally but definitely needed a little something to make it look festive. Candied pecans (we made ours from scratch but they can be purchased), fresh berries and mint sprigs added color, dimension and interest.

NAKED CAKE

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CAKE

A cake mix, a simple buttercream frosting and a gingerbread house kit is all it took to create this adorable three-layered naked cake. After preparing the cake layers, simply ice the cake in a thin layer to give an opaque look that reveals some of the cake underneath. This cake was topped with a gingerbread house and coconut flakes to resemble snow.

If you don't have time to bake a cake but want your store bought cake to look special, add berries and a holiday topper to give it that special flair. Fresh raspberries adorn the top of this cake, and to add cascading fresh berries down the side, toothpicks can be used to hold them in place. Not only is it simple and quick to do, but it turns into the perfect entertaining table centerpiece.

DOUBLE CREME BRIE BOARD Pick up your favorite brand of double creme brie and bake it. Then, add berries and a sauce of your choosing to the top as a flavor enhancer and to add interest. This brie is drizzled with local honey, berries and candied pecans and is served with crackers.

Perhaps it is the magic and enchantment of the season, the love all around, which inspires holiday marriage proposals. Before you know it, the ball drops and New Year’s Eve bells ring. Let the wedding planning begin! There is a lot of work ahead

finding the right professionals for your special day: venue, photographer, DJ. But when it comes to the officiant, will you think “Let’s ask someone we know?” What? No! Your special day deserves the expertise provided by those with experience, including a professional officiant, to work as part of your chosen team to make your wedding day exquisite.

I know because I am a local wedding officiant, established in beautiful Medina County. My journey started when my cousin said, “I think you would make a great wedding officiant,” and asked me to perform her wedding ceremony. I wanted to do it right and got to work educating myself on the legal requirements in Ohio. I then researched how to complete and file a marriage license. Spoiler alert: it took a lot of time and inquiries. Next up, scripting an actual ceremony, one I would present in front of a hundred people! Looking back, even after all the work, the first one was clunky (apologies to my cousin). However, I absolutely loved it! I found the stresses of the day melted away while writing and crafting scripts for such a joyous celebration. It came naturally and I have been doing weddings ever since. Beyond writing, I adore the couples I meet and enjoy sharing in the excitement around their special day. The wedding day is like a dance, with rhythm and timing. Managing this dance are the venue, DJ, photographer and yes, the wedding officiant. The ceremony is a small component with a big impact. That is why it is the only detail that gets rehearsed. Every solid wedding ceremony has flow and fluent transitions to keep guests engaged. Further, it should reflect the personalities of the couple and have a dash of humor sprinkled on top. People, especially the couple, will remember the tone and feeling of the ceremony. Plus, it sets the stage for the rest of the party! Couples usually start by choosing a venue — the backdrop for the day. A beautiful arch of windows

for charming pictures? Lake Erie with Ohio’s blue sky? Or perhaps a rustic theme? One of my favorite spaces is Amy's Arbors, snuggled in the heart of Valley City. The Rustic Event Center, with indoor and outdoor options, has it all — from hosting the rehearsal through to the reception. Amy and I remember a delightful country couple who requested a branding ceremony. The wedding was to take place inside, with the unity branding outside. As professionals, we understood the importance of a bride’s requests on her special day. Together we worked through logistics and “crowd management” and brought her vision to life. The DJ is the master of ceremonies, the person who ensures the nuptials are clearly heard. Every DJ has their microphones, and the videographer may as well: wired, wireless, clip on and audio pack. The officiant manages all the microphones during the ceremony and holds the ceremony book. It can be a bit to juggle! I have the experience of collaborating with DJs to ensure wiring is hidden and the acoustics are unclouded and crisp. No shuffling of microphones, papers or audio packs during the ceremony! Guests (and your wedding videographer) will appreciate clear audio presented by a skilled public speaker. The officiant and photographer work side-by-side to create quality photos from the ceremony. I’ve soaked up pointers from various photographers. Each one has unique tips from processional pauses, hand placement during ring exchange, centering couples and granting them the proper timing to get images of the pronouncement, first kiss and presentation.

In return, I share with the photographer special moments to capture. Understanding when to step out of the way is also important. An officiant doesn't need to be present in the romantic first kiss photo! Earlier this year, Farming with Friends, opened its 87-acre farm in Hinckley that employs people with disabilities. But the story behind this farm is more than initially meets the eye. Let's dive in. The inception of the farm and nonprofit organization truly began in December 2019, when Farming with Friends executive director and co-founder

at it another way, from another perspective," Tristan said. “Over time, we knew in our heart of hearts that our new calling was to serve people with disabilities. In addition, we wanted to provide other typically-abled people with opportunities to get to know people with disabilities on a deeper level." In the summer of 2021, the Griffins hosted a sports camp for people with disabilities that was wildly successful. But they knew that they wanted to do more, so they turned their sights towards farming. “In December 2022, I didn’t receive a promotion that I was sure I’d receive, and I asked my friend Brian Moore out for breakfast to chat about it. During this conversation, I casually shared with him my dream of a farm that employs people with disabilities. Unbeknownst to me, Brian and his wife, Alyssa, had just purchased a farm in Hinckley.” From there, the dream blossomed into reality, and the Moores and the

Griffins partnered to create Farming with Friends. As a starting point, the families came together to make a simple yet meaningful mission — "to restore God’s creation through regenerative farming, employment of people with disabilities and community engagement" — and the core values of home, dignity, together and play. Currently, the farm is ramping up to open its storefront this spring. Tristan said that they plan to hire the store's first employee by February, and that the store will offer goods like chicken, beef, eggs and honey. This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
