As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sports schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community — kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, a local party “Danimal,” a family-friendly experience at Majestic Farms and bike fun with Century Cycles. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love. Here’s to the closing of another great sunshine season!

Greater Cleveland Aquarium welcomed its two millionth daytime guest in April of 2022, the Britt family from Bratenahl, Ohio. “We come for our little guy . . . he loves seeing turtles and sharks, and he’s always talking about the octopus,” explained mother Chelsea Britt. Reaching two million general admission visitors wasn’t the first milestone moment the Aquarium celebrated this year. Established in 2012, the Flats West Bank attraction began celebrating its 10 anniversary by announcing the rare births of weedy seadragons, an event few aquariums in the world have witnessed. “This is a major accomplishment and we’re excited to document and share what we learn from the process with others focused on the conservation of this delicate species,” says curator Ray Popik. Ray’s team cares for more than 3,600 fresh and saltwater animals. The Aquarium is located in a powerhouse that once generated electricity for

streetcars and the seadragons reside in a reimagined coal chute. While the habitat’s vertical space worked perfectly for “dancing” seadragons, retrofitting the first level of a historic brick building for an aquarium has not been without its challenges," explains Senior Maintenance Technician Mike Gorek. He continues: “Finding opportunities in the limitations and figuring out how to create viable, one-of-a-kind habitats from scratch the way we have with the giant Pacific octopus arch or the Tropical Forest aviary is a fun and fulfilling part of my job.” Dive Safety Coordinator Halle Minshall heads up the underwater team responsible for maintaining those exhibits. While she loves interacting with guests while diving with sharks and stingrays, her biggest reward comes from seeing visitors make connections with the aquatic world. “We encourage guests to consider how their actions can impact waterways and the natural habitats of some pretty amazing animals,” says Halle. Office Assistant Neda Spears believes species diversity, immersive decor, unique views and a strong sense of connection have helped to solidify the Aquarium as a staple destination in an increasingly vibrant part of the city. “When we opened a decade ago, there wasn’t nearly as much activity in The Flats and the adjacent Gordon Square, Hingetown and Ohio City neighborhoods,” she says. “Now, there are any number of nearby eateries, breweries, shops, performance venues and park trails for our team, guests and 15,000 members to enjoy.” The Aquarium is conveniently positioned just steps away from the Cuyahoga River and a short drive from the West Side Market, Rock Hall, Great Lakes Science Center, Progressive Field, Playhouse Square and other downtown Cleveland destinations. “If you’re planning a day trip to Cleveland, it’s easy to add us to the itinerary so you can spend time spotting Solomon Island leaf frogs, watching sea stars’ tiny tube feet in action or examining the ‘toothy grins’ of a sand tiger sharks gliding over your head,” says General Manager Stephanie White. If you prefer something livelier, there are donkeys who yearn for your affection and goats who will stand on your back during yoga. Majestic Meadows Alpacas & Boutique is a great release for stressful times and so close, it almost does not seem real, almost majestic.

Faye and Jeffrey Farley, owners of Majestic Meadows, who now work alongside two of their children Kurt and Brittany, have been alpaca lovers since they first discovered them in 1994. Today, the farm has evolved into more than just alpacas — a lot more! TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND MAJESTIC MEADOWS. A little over 25 years ago, we were introduced to Jerry and Libby Forstner, who at the time, owned the most prestigious alpaca breeding program in North America, Magical Farms. The opportunity to volunteer at their farm not only gave us friends who are like family but also gave us the confidence to buy our own alpacas and start our own farm. Open to the public since 1997, it was not until 2018 when we decided to expand beyond just having animals on the farm and opened The Alpaca Boutique that things really changed for us.

"When I made my first balloon for a child [over a decade ago], their smile really made an impact on me. From that moment on, I knew this is what I wanted to keep doing." Dan Dufek, a Medina resident for over 20 years and owner of Danimal Clown Entertainment, has been clowning for almost 15 years — since his father introduced him to the craft when he was 28. "My dad did clowning for charity events for 15 years," Dan says. "One day, he told me that his assistant couldn't show up to an upcoming event and asked if I wanted to do it with him. When I said 'yes,' he gave me a three-day crash course in balloon twisting. That's

when I learned my first balloons — a sword, dog, parrot, bumblebee, hummingbird and a basic hat. After the crash course, I did my first event with my fathers and there were over 100 kids!" Now, Dan knows over 1,000 different balloon creations, ranging from exotic animals to cartoon characters like Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario, Spiderman and Batman. He's also known as one of the fastest balloon twisters in the area and offers balloon art as a clown (with makeup and big clown shoes) or without clown attire. Although, that's not all he can do — if you can even believe it.

Dan is a great teacher and loves showing kids how to make things at parties. He also loves to juggle and teach kids how to do so. Additional things that he offers are custom centerpieces, flower bouquets, indoor columns and outdoor yard art. “I am always learning new things and expanding on what I already know,” Dan says. "Also, I make it a point to make every balloon creation an experience for the child. I love to interact with them and my goal is to captivate their attention and bring a smile to their face." Although he got his start in charity events, Dan now primarily spends his time doing birthday parties, festivals and community events across Northeast Ohio. One unique thing that he brings to every event is a large menu with around 100 balloon choices for children to choose from. This allows children to get a vision of each balloon creation. Dan has several different menu boards that he uses interchangeably depending on the theme of the event. He also brings stickers for the kids and other cool things to give to them while he's working. In addition to in-person parties, Dan offers various virtual party options — a service he started providing during the pandemic. He also has a birthday-in-abag option, where he prepares a number of balloon creations and assembles them in a bag so that the child can have them on their birthday. "I also offer the birthday-in-a-bag service if I am booked and can't attend the child's birthday party," Dan says. "I book out pretty far ahead and I recommend that people reach out to me at least 30 days in advance — more if possible." One of the many reasons that Dan books so far in advance is because of his solid reputation in Northeast Ohio. He is wellknown for having great communication and timeliness so planning an event with him is stress-free. Dan also loves working with entertainers in the area and will occasionally bring in others to do face painting, pony rides, magic shows and more.

When it comes to the next generation of Danimal Clown Entertainment, Dan already has a young prodigy, his 10-year-old niece Lexi. "I am currently training Lexi and she loves it," Dan says. "She'll come to parties with me sometimes and when people ask her what she wants to be when she grows up, she says, 'I want to be a clown like my uncle Danimal.'" Scott Maloney, new majority owner of Century Cycles in Medina, remembers the first time he rode a bike on his own — the whizzing of the tires as he floated down the hill, the smell of summer air and the freedom we all experience when first learning to ride a bike. Scott recalls that at 12 years old, he was always stopping to admire Schwinn bikes in the window of a local repair shop. One day, the owner handed Scott a new bike in a box and said, "Alright kid, let's see what you got." Scott assembled the bike, was offered a job and he knew then that biking was in his blood and that one day he would share that passion with others. Scott and his wife and business partner, Vicki, knew it was the right time to take over Century Cycles when the opportunity presented itself in November 2021. Along with co-owner Josh Ronschke, their mission is to breathe new life and excitement into biking for everyone young and old. At Century Cycles, which has been in operation since 1992, you can easily find the right bike and everything that comes with it. Century Cycles has four locations: Medina, Peninsula, Rocky River and Shaker Hts. No matter your age, ability or background, you can rent a bike at the Rocky River and Peninsula locations to experiment with different styles of bikes. Here are some insights from Scott:

• Electric bikes do well with retirees for their low impact exercise. • A Trail-a-Bike is a great option for little ones who like the feeling of pedaling but need to remain in control with an adult at the helm. • Hybrid bikes are the most popular with a comfortable upright riding position. A bonus of renting is that you get to “ride before you buy” because every bike or accessory is available at one of the four stores for purchase. “Your experience when visiting any of our locations will be enjoyable and relaxed,” says Scott. “It’s important that you feel confident in the bike you are riding so we encourage test riding and we will assist you in finding the right helmet and other accessories to go with the bike. We have it all.” Getting outside and finding a place where you can ride your new bike is easy. Century Cycles lists events on their website that will promise you and your new bike an adventure.
