Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day walking the Historic Medina Square, eating ice cream on a hot summer day or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue, we wanted to share some of the happenings around our city this summer as well as some local businesses we love. In addition, it is our privilege to shine a light on local veterans in our community and to thank them for their service in honor of the Fourth of July. We have immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. That’s exactly what you’ll encounter at The Raspberry and the Rose. Tucked inside a building constructed circa 1879, The Raspberry and The Rose houses 1,600 square feet of curated jewelry finds and modern fashion trends. Accidental entrepreneur is the title that best suits Melissa Ziogas, owner and creator of this quaint shop. Her eye for inventive displays and hip merchandise offerings with a fun twist make her boutique a stand out among the shops in the district. After a long stretch as a stay-at-home parent, Melissa was ready to reenter the workforce. But after countless job interviews, she couldn’t find a position that felt right. “If you can’t find it, then create it” became her mantra. The concept of opening a boutique emerged and melded with her interest in jewelry making, crafting and art. The Raspberry and The Rose originally opened on Washington Street next to Hershey’s Barber Shop in a storefront with just 732 square feet. At first, she handmade every piece of jewelry she sold. Yes, you read that right. Melissa handmade every piece she sold. With great success under her wing and a huge leap of faith, she moved to her current location and expanded to include a wide array of clothing, accessories and added artisan wares from all over the globe. It’s the early 1900s and you just purchased a .50 cent roundtrip ticket to travel by rail car from Cleveland to Medina County. The pandemic was devastating for many small businesses. Fortunately, The Place, on Route 18 in Medina, wasn’t one of them. Seems that many people figured, “If I have to stay home, I might as well be in a hot tub!” Andrea Reedy, one of three sisters who own The Place, recalled, “The last time we saw business like this was after 9/11.” Similar to what happened 21 years ago, travel bans and caution kept people close to home. People wanted to keep busy, so home remodeling skyrocketed — including creating private outdoor resorts, featuring a hot tub, swim spa or pool. Worldwide, demand has exploded. Many manufacturers have experienced 10 times their normal sales, and lead times stretched from weeks, to months, to years. Some manufacturers had more than two years' worth of orders in queue to go out but faced shortages of vital components and labor, exasperating their attempts to keep up. To keep their most valued clients with product, manufacturers terminated hundreds of smaller dealers, resulting in them having to tell their clients their hot tub was never coming. Fortunately, The Place has not had such issues. As a Northeast Ohio business with deep roots in the community,

they have been fortunate enough to come out of the pandemic stronger. "With 55 years of business behind us, we are well established. Our family owns our building, we pay cash for our inventory and have long-term relationships with our suppliers. We have been getting hot tubs and fireplaces throughout the pandemic — sometimes not as fast as our clients were buying, but everyone eventually received their product and now we have plenty of inventory in stock,” Andrea says. “In fact, over the past winter, I purchased all the hot tubs and swim spas we ordered plus units other dealers could not take due to storage, cash or credit shortages.” With the number of swim spas and tubs in stock, The Place's showroom, warehouse and parking lot have overflowed— so much so that they had to rent off-site storage.
