An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us or someone we look up to for guidance — we can recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. For me, that man is my dad. He is my best friend, adventure partner, mentor, goofball jokester, workout buddy, financial advisor and all-around hero. I can't remember a time in my life when my dad wasn't working hard. Whether it be professionally or on projects around the house, he always gives it his all and this is something I love about him. This month, we are honoring men and their contributions to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues are worth it. To conquer the world with a smile — that seems like a big feat these days, but what a wonderful concept. Not intimidated by any challenge a smile might have, the dentistry father-son duo of the Dental Arts of Wadsworth (open for seven years) takes this to heart and has the experience and talent to prove it! Their mission explained, which began 25 years ago at the Dental Arts in Akron and continues today, is simply this: “A new smile can change somebody’s world. Their confidence, their self-esteem, their opportunities, a whole world can change, just by having a great smile.”

Recently, we sat down with Dr. Cristian Chirla —father — and Dr. Phillip Chirla — son — to learn about the Dental Arts of Wadsworth. Here’s what they had to say:

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER/PROVIDE? We offer services ranging from basic general dentistry which includes hygiene, fillings, crown/bridge and cosmetic work, to oral surgery and endodontics. We also provide LANAP, which stands for laser-assisted new attachment procedure, and is used to manage and treat periodontal disease. We also provide orthodontic treatment with Invisalign clear aligners, utilizing our Itero scanner.

THE SERVICES YOU PROVIDE ARE QUITE EXTENSIVE. Most of the dentistry that we recommend is performed in-house. Both doctors have spent and continue to spend a lot of time each year in continuing education to provide the best and most up-to-date treatment.

WHAT CAN A NEW PATIENT EXPECT TO EXPERIENCE DURING THEIR FIRST APPOINTMENT AT THE DENTAL ARTS OF WADSWORTH?

Our hygienists are highly trained in providing the best patient comfort during their appointment. Our doctors will come and meet the patient and provide a comprehensive oral evaluation.

TELL US ABOUT YOU AND WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WORK TOGETHER AS A FATHER AND SON DUO. Dr. Chirla: I am originally from Oradea, Romania. I attended Liberty University and graduated in 1990 with a BS in Biology/Chemistry. In 1992, I married my wife, Adina, and have been blessed with four children. I started dental school in 1993 at Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine and graduated in 1997. Since then, I have had the privilege of training

and becoming a fellow at the Midwest Implant Institute. I have also accomplished a mastership and fellowship at ICOI. One of the greatest joys as a father is to see your child follow in your footsteps! I have the joy of working with both of my sons, Phillip, and Cristian Jr. (who works in the front office). My son is a very gifted young dentist, a fast learner and has awesome skills. We grow together, we practice together and we succeed together! Dr. Phil: I was born the same year that my dad graduated from dental school and opened his first practice in Akron. I had the opportunity to attend college early through what was then called the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options program. In 2019, I married my beautiful wife, Ligia. I attended Case Western Reserve for dental school and graduated in 2021. The best thing about working with dad is having a mentor. It has given me the confidence to grow as a dentist, and the admiration that I have for him increases daily as I see him work as a dental professional. I’ve come to realize he is the best dentist I have ever seen.

HOW DO KEEP YOUR OFFICE RUNNING SMOOTHLY? Nancy is the glue that keeps us all together. She has been an invaluable part of our team for the last 25 years, early on as a dental hygienist and then full-time as our executive manager. Nancy graduated from Ohio State University in 1987 with a BA in Psychology and an RDH (Registered Dental Hygienist) degree. Having a background in dentistry makes her a very knowledgeable and versatile manager. She is always ready to sit down with patients and be a patient advocate for those who may be anxious about extensive treatment plans and how to navigate them. We would not be where we are today as a practice without her contributions, expertise and dedication.

If you grew up in Cleveland and have spent any time in Ohio City, then you are familiar with the Hot Dog Inn - Home of the Old Fashion Hot Dog. Don Raimondo grew up on this side of town and the Hot Dog Inn was the place to eat and be. He recalls from back in the day, “All my buddies and I would spend a lot of time there, so I was sad to hear they were closing after 92 years of business in March 2020.” Don and his wife, Shannon, couldn’t let the tradition of these amazing dogs end after 92 years, so with a spin on the name, The Dog House was born.

Since Don and Shannon both come from successful entrepreneurial and professional backgrounds, it seemed only natural to bring tradition and the success of making dogs from Cleveland to Brunswick. The Dog House will sit in front of another successful business owned by this power couple, Havana’s Choice Cigars and Lounge. “Nothing seemed to make sense for an empty building in front of the lounge on our property until we heard about the Hot Dog Inn”, says Don. “Then it hit me, this is it. Havana’s Lounge has been very successful in its location at 170 Pearl Rd., Brunswick and is one of three Havana Cigars lounges in the area that are owned by Don and Shannon. Don recalls from recent years, “Summer nights out on the patio with your favorite cigar [while] listening to some live music is a destination here in Brunswick. Now, the property has expanded to include a bite to eat as well.” Keeping the tradition alive, The Dog House is a casual, sit inside or outside environment. Also, reasonable pricing — $5-$6 per person — makes it easy for a family dinner. At The Dog House, you can order anything from your traditional chili dog to Italian sausage with homemade chili and red sauce, which are Raimondo family recipes that have been perfected by Shannon and her mother. How Your Library can Help Your Child Get Ready for School and Thrive

As families return to a summer of fun activities, librarians at Medina County District Library hear concerns regarding the pandemic’s long-term effects on child development. Parents are worried their baby missed out on learning and social opportunities that older siblings benefited from. Caregivers are concerned their toddler may have a motor skills delay or their kindergartener is behind in word recognition. Kelly Halleen, Children’s Department Supervisor at Brunswick Library says, “It’s easy for caregivers to feel like they are not doing enough. As a full-time working parent of a preschooler with a speech delay and a baby born during the pandemic, I think to myself: What more could I have done? Did they reach their milestones? Did I read to them every night?” Luckily, her team of librarians is always ready to spring into action, ready to help families support school readiness with events and initiatives. The Summer Reading Game begins June 1 at all six MCDL locations and Bookmobile. This reading challenge includes a colorful gameboard to track progress, a prize from the treasure chest and a new book of the child’s choice upon completion. But that’s not all. “Families come in for books and stay for the fun, with events, shows, outdoor storytimes, crafts and more! We’ve seen kids greatly improve their reading skills over the summer. Instead of a summer skills slump, many kids discover how fun reading can be,” Kelly says. Learn more about the summer reading program at MCDL.info/SummerReading. Storytime is another opportunity to build the foundation of reading. The more books a child is exposed to, the larger their vocabulary and understanding of the world. Kelly says that when you’re feeling any doubt, “It’s going to be okay. We see you and hear you. We are proud of you. You brought your child or grandchild to storytime — that’s a great step. We hope by sharing our love of reading and literacy, your child will grow to love stories too and you will enjoy the memories made at the library.”

EARLY LITERACY – TIPS TO PRACTICE AT HOME • Read the same book over and over if that’s what your child wants. Create a routine, bond with your child and read before bedtime. • Talk by using fun words with your child. Words like “pop,” “splash” and “boom” will grab your child’s attention and can be incorporated into play. • Sing with your sing. Nursery rhymes like “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” feature rhymes that help children break sounds and syllables in words. • Write by tracing large letters in a magazine or write words with brightly colored markers. • Play! For babies, play peek-a-boo. Babies love faces and will learn you are still there — even though they can’t see you!

MCDL EARLY LITERACY RESOURCES • 1000 Books Before Kindergarten – a reading initiative motivating children to read, with gameboards to track progress and small prizes along the way. • Early Literacy Kits – center around a theme, complete with numerous books, puppets, games and crafts. Great for small group or in-home use. • Discovery Packs – a bookbag with themed books and toys for checkout. • Kindergarten Kits – made available through partner preschools and for download on the library website. • Play Areas – MCDL locations have designated play areas in each Children’s department. Find stimulating toys, learning games and other families to interact with and practice those social skills! • Books – our carefully curated children’s collection features new releases, classics, fiction and non-fiction.
