ENGAGE VIRTUAL RANGE

Virtual shooting ranges — they are a fairly new business concept for the general public and their popularity is growing quite fast. There is only a handful in all of Ohio and luckily for our readers, two of them are right here in our backyard. Chad Wilson is part-owner of Engage Virtual Range in Medina and Avon Lake, and feels like he has gotten into the business at the right time. Right now, gun sales are soaring all across the country and ammunition is expensive. Because of this, visiting a virtual shooting range is a great alternative to the traditional live-ammunition shooting range. A virtual shooting range simulator offers an educational, fun, safe and CONTINUED >

judgment-free environment for shooters whose skills range from those who are just picking up a gun for the first time to expert marksmen. "We feel this is a good place for anybody to come learn. Whether you are law enforcement or just a recreational shooter, we offer an environment that has been stripped down of all the typical things you might see and hear at a traditional range," Chad says. When you make a reservation for a simulated session at Engage, you are automatically assigned with an instructor and given a private shooting area, or "SIM bay" to practice in. "We get fantastic reviews about our instructors. Most are retired law enforcement or have a military background. They are here because they are passionate about teaching and they are here to coach and encourage. We truly operate in a "judgment-free" area that the customers really appreciate," Chad explains. The environment at Engage is a big selling point to customers. It is spacious, clean, quiet and relaxing. When you get into the practice area, you will find four different styles of handguns and one rifle to choose from. Terry Helton, Engage's Director of Training, was there to help me on the day of my visit and as a fairly inexperienced shooter, I can tell you that his demeanor and professionalism put me right at ease as I tried out each of the different guns. The thing that impressed me the most was how strongly Terry emphasized the importance of handling the virtual gun the same way that you would handle a gun with live ammunition in it. "You can just as easily learn bad fundamentals as you can learn good fundamentals," Terry says. "And even though these guns are obviously equipped with lasers and not real bullets, you should handle it the exact same way as you would with a real gun." Virtual guns at a virtual shooting range are weighted to feel like the real thing, but instead of bullets, there's a laser on the barrel that interacts with a large high-definition screen — much like that in a golf simulator. While there are target shooting training modes and games to shoot, there are also real-life scenarios where law enforcement and gun owners can hone their defense skills. For instance, there is a close-quarter combat simulation for police to practice with and also a simulation for concealed carry gun owners that simulates a car-jacking or robbery while behind the wheel of your car. These kinds of scenarios cannot be duplicated at a live gun range but at Engage Virtual Range, you can safely practice how to react a high-stress situation.

As you might expect, a virtual range is a great way to introduce gun safety and shooting skills to women who are interested in learning how to shoot a gun. In a lot of cases, the environment at a live-ammunition range may be a bit overwhelming and intimidating for both women and men, but women, in particular, have found great comfort in the virtual range setting. All beginners can practice with a non-recoil pistol for warmup, going at their own pace with no pressure to be fast or deal with the recoil of a weapon. As their comfort level improves, they can move on to some paced exercises where personal scores are kept so they can see their progress as they go. It's a great way to practice and develop a comfort level with guns. Chad says that they get all kinds of customers looking for different things to work on, but one of the elements of his business that he didn't anticipate being so popular when they

opened was the number of businesses who were interested in holding corporate events at Engage. Once he recognized the possibilities of what corporate events could look like, he took it upon himself to develop content and team-building exercises for the events. He explains how there are competitions and "missions" that different departments of a corporation can compete against one another with and how much fun the businesses have with it. Frosted Cake Shoppe, 503 S. Court St., a local bakery and every dessert lover's dream, has a new and exciting offering on its menu — gourmet milkshakes. As the name suggests, these milkshakes aren't your average drinkable dessert. Each flavor has its own set of unique toppings, ranging from a mini cupcake to a mini piece of pie, pretzels, and popcorn. Owner, Brittany Rende, said that the idea for this new menu item arose when she was looking for something new to spice up the shop's menu — figuratively, not literally. "I had seen these over-the-top shakes were trending online and thought they could be a fun addition. I really started planning and testing recipes in November 2021, and then earlier this year we went down to Tampa for vacation and visited The Yard Milkshake

Bar while we were there," Brittany explained. "The Yard's entire business model is dedicated to gourmet milkshakes and ice cream, so they offer tons of different flavors. We knew that we didn't want to offer that many because we still wanted all of our baked goods to be the focus of Frosted, but it was really cool to check things out." Brittany also explained that no other businesses in Northeast Ohio — that she knows of — offer gourmet milkshakes: "I believe the closest place that offers them is in Columbus." After lots of research and recipe testing — which I'm sure was purely delicious — Brittany added gourmet milkshakes to Frosted's menu of sweet treats in February. Instantly, they were a hit. "The milkshake flavors are based on our most popular cupcake flavors, so people really get an idea of what to expect," Brittany said. "For example, our Death by Chocolate milkshake, also our first flavor, is based on our Death by Chocolate cupcake. It's a creamy chocolate milkshake with toppings like mini chocolate chips, chocolate fudge and a mini chocolate cupcake." Some of the other gourmet milkshake flavors that Frosted offers are Birthday Cake, S'mores, Key Lime Pie, Strawberry Cheesecake, Caramel Dream, Mint Chip, and Cinnamon Sugar. Brittany shared with me that her favorite flavors are Cinnamon Sugar and Strawberry Cheesecake, and described that the Cinnamon Sugar shake tastes just like the sweet, cinnamony milk that happens when you eat a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. All of the shakes are one size — 12 ounces — and are served in a cute jar for $12 unless ordered to-go. To-go shakes are also 12 ounces but offer fewer toppings for easier transport and cost $10. Of course, Brittany and her team at Frosted are still pumping out dozens of cupcakes, cookies, brownies, cheesecakes and pies every day. They even take cake orders for special occasions, whether it's for a birthday celebration or a wedding! Cleveland’s Favorite Cruise Dining Ship

Chances are if you are from Northeast Ohio, you have been down to The Flats area of the Cuyahoga River and you have seen the Nautica Queen. The dining cruise ship was christened in Cleveland in 1992 and has remained at the same dock on the west bank of The Flats near Jacobs Pavilion and the Greater Cleveland Aquarium for over 30 years. When you purchase a lunch or dinner cruise on the Nautica Queen, you are set to experience an on-water adventure that brings the best of Cleveland's dining and sightseeing together! One incredible sight-seeing event that only comes to Cleveland every three years is the Tall Ships Challenge Festival. This year, the festival takes place July 7-10. When the tall ships are in town, the Nautica Queen loves nothing more than to be right down there with them. The lunch and dinner cruises during this time are especially popular among senior citizens and families with small children. Being on the Nautica Queen during the event eliminates all the walking to and from the tall ships and makes it easier to keep your kids closer to you in a more relaxed setting instead of being in the middle of the large crowds that flock to the Cleveland Waterfront for the event. "Our cruises during the Tall Ships Challenge are very popular because it provides great accessibility and an amazing vantage point to see the ships without having to be down in the event fighting the

crowd," says Colleen Grey, Director of Operations for Nautica Queen. On Thurs., July 7, the tall ships will be in a sail-in parade where the ships will be out of the docks and out sailing together on Lake Erie, which Colleen says is a sight you can't miss. "It's really a very cool scene out there on the water when all the ships are under sail," she says. "It's a very popular event for us." Nautica Queen will offer lunch and dinner cruises for the sail-in parade on Thursday and throughout the entire weekend, including a Sunday brunch, where the Captain will cruise right up next to the tall ships at the dock to get a great, close-up view. Nautica Queen is under the helm of Captain Joe Slusarski, who has an amazing story to share about his journey up the ranks to becoming the top captain in charge of the popular cruise ship. Believe it or not, Captain Joe's first job on the Nautica Queen was as a busboy. After his stint as busboy he was able to work his way into being part of the maritime operations crew and eventually was promoted to first mate. From there, he went through a captain training course to become a licensed captain and today he is the top captain, or Port Captain, of the Nautica Queen. Obviously, Captain Joe has a natural talent for navigating on the water, but his love for boating and all the challenges of being a boat captain on Lake Erie is evident when you hear him talk about his chosen career. I really love all the views of the city that the river and lake have to offer," he says. "It can be challenging at times, but that's one of the things I love the most about it." Captain Joe puts a lot of care and consideration into which route he will take for the lunch and dinner cruises. Keeping in mind passenger safety, weather and river traffic, he aims to give guests the best views of Cleveland, including some unique sights that are hard to find unless you are out on the water. And if you are telling yourself that the movement of the water would keep you from enjoying this amazing experience, both Colleen and Captain Joe assure guests that the feel aboard a larger boat on the water is actually quite different and smoother than the smaller crafts most may have experienced.

Nautica Queen's lunch, Sunday brunch and dinner cruises run rain or shine on climate-controlled, enclosed decks, which allows the ship to offer cruises from Easter Sunday until New Year's Eve. Private charters are also available. The atmosphere aboard the Nautica Queen is a "place of celebration" says Colleen. It's perfect for celebrating everything from a 90th birthday party, to an after-prom gathering, to a corporate event and or a wedding. Bonus: Captain Joe is even licensed to perform marriages on the ship.
