It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us and where we want to go in the new year. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community-focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, being active and everything in between. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

Our friend, Heath Burkholder, owner of three My Personal Trainer Franchises in Northeast Ohio, can help with that. But don't just take it from us; take it from him. TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND. I grew up on a farm in Ashland and I joined the Marine Corps two weeks after graduation. I spent five years there and served in two combat deployments to Afghanistan. After serving, I went back to school and got two degrees, one in intelligence studies and national security and one in health education. While in college at Norte Dame College of Ohio I also helped as the assistant strength coach for three years. When I graduated college in March 2020, I intended to go into federal law enforcement but

couldn't due to a hiring freeze caused by COVID-19. I knew I wanted to help people and that I had a passion for fitness, so I decided to start personal training. I ended up loving it so much that I bought the MPT studio that I was managing in April 2021, located in Medina, and then my second studio, located in Strongsville, in August of 2021. Now, I am working towards opening my third location in Wadsworth.

WHAT DOES A SESSION WITH MPT LOOK LIKE? A session at MPT is 20 minutes long. It's a full-body workout and it's anaerobic, meaning high intensity for a low duration of time. Our workouts are done completely on machines, utilizing a slow repetition for every movement.

HOW DO YOU TAILOR EACH SESSION/WORKOUT PLAN TO AN INDIVIDUAL'S NEEDS AND GOALS? We start each new client with a free consultation. During this, we address their health concerns and goals, explain how we

can work around most issues that an individual may have and go over some nutritional advice. We start everyone at a baseline level of low intensity so we determine out if any movements bother them and adjust as necessary. Based on what we learn from the client during the consultation, the nutritional advice we give will cater to their individual goal, cutting out any guesswork or questions that a client may have.

WHAT MAKES A SESSION AT MPT DIFFERENT FROM WORKING OUT IN THE GYM BY YOURSELF? OR IN A GROUP FITNESS CLASS? Having a personal trainer is so much different than working out on your own or in a group environment for so many reasons. The first one is the private atmosphere that makes all of our clients feel at home and very comfortable. The second thing that makes the one-on-one environment significantly better is that we are directly holding every client accountable. In group settings, the instructor cannot keep an eye on every person in the group no matter how hard they try. Form is crucial to strength training, and we are watching every movement a client makes to keep them from getting hurt and to ensure they receive the most efficient workout.

CAN YOU DEBUNK A COMMON FITNESS MYTH FOR US?W I love this question because this is why our company exists. and myths like these are why starting a fitness journey can seem impossible. The first myth that I get asked about the most is that some form of macronutrient is “worse” than another. For example, most people think that carbohydrates are “bad." This is entirely and completely false and can make a health journey extremely difficult and confusing. Every calorie is equal as far as your body weight is concerned. The best solution is portion control!

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT LEADING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE? The importance of staying consistent and committed. If we don’t make positive changes permanent, then we will never build a new healthy lifestyle. I cannot emphasize this enough.

For those starting a new journey, my advice is to start somewhere. No matter how bad you think something is or how hard it may be, you have to start somewhere. Every little change matters and by setting small goals with the actual intent and action of following them you will be successful. For those continuing their fitness journey, continue to educate yourself and find new ways to keep it going strong. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Learning how to keep improving ourselves is the most powerful thing we can do to propel us forward to our own ideas of success.

As most of us are aware, Ohio is home to some pretty well-known, nationally-recognized parks, monuments and tourist attractions. Music lovers from all over the world have traveled here to visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The same can be said for roller coaster enthusiasts who make the trip to Cedar Point every summer and for animal lovers from all over America who travel to the Columbus Zoo because it is one of the best zoos in the country. Recently, I discovered another one of these legendary, national attractions that is right here in our backyard — Ray's Indoor Mountain Bike Park. In case you didn't know, Ray's MTB is a one-of-a-kind, biker's wonderland that offers 200,000 square feet of indoor tracks and trails that are open to people of all ages and riding abilities. The park has miles and miles of rolling hills and ramps made of plywood, rocks, logs, steel and concrete for as far as the eye can see. In fact, on the day of my first visit, I rode for almost two hours and later learned from my friends who came with me that there were parts of the park that I never even discovered. Yes...it's that big and Ray's MTB recognizes that on their website by saying: "If you are lost, that's good! Now you are on an adventure!" Keith Miller, Ray's MTB General Manager — who has been riding at the park since opening day in 2004 — says with conviction, "There's nothing else like it! There's nothing else that compares to this place...anywhere." And to prove that point, he asked me to take a look around the parking lot on my way back to my car at the end of the day. What I saw was cars from every state in the region — Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin, just to name a few. If I needed any more convincing of the national

recognition that Ray's MTB has, later that day when I posted a picture that I took at the park on my Instagram page and a friend of mine and an avid mountain biker who has lived in Northern California for the past 25 years commented: "Ray's!" Chances are that if you search the internet for a list of the top 10 indoor mountain bike parks in the country, Ray's MTB will almost certainly be listed as No. 1. Ray's MTB is named after founder and owner, Ray Petro, who had a "Field Of Dreams" kind of vision over 20 years ago when he found himself wishing there was a place for him and others to ride their mountain bikes in the winter. He knew that if he could find the right building and pour his heart and soul into constructing a quality indoor facility himself, people would come. And come they have. Every year Ray's

MTB has grown in popularity and this season they expect to bring in over 40,000 visitors. Ray's MTB is located in the southwest corner of Cleveland, not far from the airport, at 9801 Walford Ave. It is open seven days a week from late SeptemberApril. In the off-season, Ray's commits themselves to expanding and improving their trails for the upcoming season. "In the summer, we spend all the money that we made in the winter to do renovations so that people will continue to come back," Keith says. That mentality has become the secret to their success and serves as their motto, as you will see signs in the building and on their website saying, "If you keep coming, we will keep building." The best part about Ray's MTB is that it truly is for everyone. If you can ride a bike without training wheels, then you are in for

a good time at the park. When you go, you will see little boys and girls riding their little bikes with their parents.You will see the adventurous teenagers who throw caution to the wind, looking for every thrill they can find. You will see experienced adult mountain bikers who are getting in a good workout and improving their trail skills. You will even see riders like me, who rented their bike for the day at Ray's MTB and took pleasure in starting on the beginner trails and then — after gaining some confidence — moved on to more challenging trails.
