The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often look to replicate what made the season feel so magical for us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child. In my family, I grew up making fried pizza dough each year on Christmas Eve. We served the lightly salted fried dough with marinara sauce, all sorts of cheeses and meats, olives and pickled vegetables. We even coated some of the fried dough in cinnamon and sugar for dessert. I still make the drive up to my parent's house each Christmas Eve to celebrate this tradition with them. In this month's issue, we are highlighting the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We had the opportunity to work with the wonderful Elizabeth McComsey of I.D.E.A. Boutique on an article about her newly renovated space as well as opportunities for holiday shopping at her shop. We also collaborated with Habitat for Humanity of Medina County ReStore for an article about giving back to the community this holiday season. I.D.E.A. Boutique – Inspired Designs by Elizabeth Anne was born in 2010 as a jewelry shop featuring natural and ethically-sourced gemstones. Since its inception, I.D.E.A.’s fearless leader, Elizabeth McComsey, has expanded the shop’s inventory to include her own natural skincare products (Frankin’ Beautiful and IDEA Skincare), vegan handbags, essential oils, beeswax food wraps, reusable straws and vegan candles. Recently, you may have noticed that I.D.E.A. was closed for an extended period of time for renovations — from April until October, to be exact. This seven-month period allowed Elizabeth and her team time to completely renovate the space and lean into the business’s eco-forward mission and values. Elizabeth says, “The renovations have really allowed us to lean into our eco-friendly values through the additions of a beautiful moss wall and other natural design concepts. It really all started with renovating the back end of the space, but then we figured that we may as well renovate the rest of the space since we were already closed.” Elizabeth goes on to explain that bringing natural and eco-inspired design and decor to the forefront really places emphasis on her goals that have been there from the very beginning. She says, “My goal has always been to provide ethically-sourced, environmentally-friendly products. We have always worked towards this, and now our space truly reflects it.” In addition to the new renovations, I.D.E.A. has several new products that are available just in time for all of your holiday shopping needs. These products include jewelry made with moss agate stones, expanded skincare products made right in the shop, (like a new morning facial moisturizer) and unique stemware. Habitat for Humanity of Medina County ReStore

Holidays are a time for giving. You might not think there is an opportunity to give somewhere locally all year or if there is even a need…but the Habitat for Humanity of Medina County ReStore, will change your perspective. The Habitat for Humanity is just one part of the incredible non-profit Christian housing ministry right here in Medina County. Building and renovating safe, decent and affordable homes to sell to low-income families is the main mission of this organization. Executive Director Tom O’Connell explains that everyone needs and deserves a decent and affordable place to live regardless of race, religion, age and gender, and all are welcome to apply or volunteer. He explains that homes are not given away but instead sold with a zero-interest mortgage and an affordable monthly payment. To be eligible for a Habitat house, those interested must first meet three areas of qualifications: need, willing to partner and ability to pay. There is also a level of “sweat equity” required from the accepted applicant. The passion and determination to help yourself is half of the journey and is what makes the mission of Habitat for Humanity, so special and unique.

Once accepted into the Habitat program, the applicant must be currently living in substandard housing. Besides the “sweat equity” part of the journey, the applicant must also be willing to take educational classes and complete the proper paperwork. This program is made possible by the local businesses, organizations, churches and individuals that donate their time, materials and talent. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore also plays an integral role. In addition to providing gently used home appliances and furniture at an affordable price to members of the community, all profits from the donated items that are sold in the ReStore go directly to purchasing property and building Habitat homes. A New Year’s Eve Celebration ARTICLE BY EMILY SHEA

Dust off the sequins and sparkles — New Year’s Eve is upon us! And what better way to usher in the year than at the annual New Year’s Eve Bash at Blue Heron Brewery & Event Center on December 31? The huge New Year’s Eve celebration will be a party unlike anything else, featuring live music, lux menu items and top shelf liquor. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect. The party will kick off at 8 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and an extravagant ice sculpture with shrimp cocktail followed by a lavish dinner experience beginning at 8:30 p.m. The dinner will include a tenderloin carving station, a seafood pasta bar, an antipasti display and cedar plank salmon. For dessert, there will be a display featuring delicious cheesecakes and tortes. Following the conclusion of dinner, live music from the Clevelandbased band, Faction, will begin at around 10 p.m. Top shelf liquor will continue to be served and the party will be in full swing as Faction plays

tunes and mashups of songs from the 70s, 80s and even current hits. Just before midnight, the countdown will begin and Faction will continue to keep the energy alive. At midnight, there will be a champagne toast to celebrate the first moments of 2023 followed by a breakfast buffet featuring a plethora of morning meal favorites to fuel any last-minute dancing before the celebration comes to a close at 1 a.m. Ready to celebrate? Tickets for the NYE celebration are on sale now for $125 and can be purchased at BlueHeronMedina.com. Plus, don’t forget that Blue Heron is offering take-and-bake meals for Christmas for pickup on December 23. The meals are specially curated by the culinary team at Blue Heron, utilizing unique flavors of the season, fresh ingredients and specific reheat instructions. has experienced so much success in its first year of business. "We have been extremely busy since opening a year ago. I am so grateful for the support that we have seen and continue to see from the community," Deanna says. There was a missed opportunity when I noticed a client’s disconnection from their home. Through the process of decluttering, living simpler, bringing in live plants, a healing color and appropriate lighting, you can change the entire feeling and harmony in your home. There is a level of wellness that most people forget is around us in our homes. I incorporate clean living concepts into the home as well; like living with fewer chemicals such as home scents and cleaning products.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

+ 1 box red velvet cake mix, plus ingredients called for on box + 2 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened + 1/2 cup powdered sugar + 2 tablespoon. heavy cream + 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 350º and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. Prepare red velvet cake batter according to box directions. Divide batter among liners and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely. Break 4 cupcakes into small crumbs. Save remaining cakes for another use. 2. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add heavy cream and vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form. 3. Line a large baking sheet with parchment. Using a small cookie scoop, scoop cream cheese mixture into balls and place on prepared baking sheet. Transfer to the freezer to chill, 1 hour. 4. Roll balls in red velvet cake crumbs until fully coated, then return to prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
