LEADERSHIP MEDINA COUNTY SUPPORTS CAREGIVERS The Leadership Medina County class of 2021 was asked to perform 30 acts of kindness during the class year. The members brainstormed ideas and decided one of their acts of kindness would be delivering goodies to caregivers at Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital. Class member John Liebler worked with fellow class member and Nurse Manager Donielle Finding MBA, MSN, RN, CCRN to coordinate distribution. They created a process so each class member could choose one of 25 days in December 2020. The goodies, which included boxed lunches, snacks and candy, were spread across all hospital departments and shifts. If you'd like to support Medina Hospital Caregivers, please

BLUE HERON MATRIMONY ALE. BLUE HERON’S FLAGSHIP BEER. The origin of this beer began when Blue Heron’s brewer and co-owner, Mike Piazza, was a homebrewer crafting beers on a propane burner in his garage. New to homebrewing, he wanted to make a style that would appeal to just about every beer drinker. Thus began the first formulations of Matrimony Ale, an American Cream Ale. Easily drinkable and refreshing, cream ale is referred to as a “lawnmower” beer in many cases. A simple recipe allows the beer to show the pale malt and corn that are the primary ingredients in the style. Fast forward 10 years to now, when Blue Heron has just brought home their first competition medal as professional brewers at the U.S.

ECO-FRIENDLY ROOFING SOLUTIONS (CONTINUED)

Two

environmentally-friendly

roofing

options

provided by Jarrell Construction are standing seam steel roofing and corrugated steel roofing. This is because metal is one of the most eco-friendly materials that can be used for roof construction. A significant proportion of the raw materials have recycled content, varying from 35% to 95%. Notably, this is unlike asphalt, which generally ends up in a landfill. Moreover, metal is one of the most recyclable and durable materials in the world. It also requires minimal maintenance and can last for over 50 years. Standing seam steel roofs are not only low maintenance and long-lasting, they are also fire resistant and cost-effective. They can be installed over existing roofing, reducing the amount of debris going into a landfill. Additionally, standing seam roofs have highly reflective paint that has been factory-applied to the surface. This helps to reflect sunlight and reduce heat transmission into the house during the warmer months, reducing attic temperature. In turn, this also helps to reduce the air conditioning load inside the living space. Although it may seem strange, steel roofs weigh less than half as much as asphalt shingles, though they provide greater protection against snow, wind, ice, fire and hail. Metal roofing will not crack, warp or rot. Many recent homeowners are choosing this option, not only for the practicality and many advantages but also the modern look it gives to the house. Another more economical option to the standing seam steel roof is the corrugated steel exposed faster systems. This type of roofing is often also called AG panel, R panel or PBR panel. The system has all the environmental benefits of the standing seam, including the energy-efficient paint coatings. It is also very long-lasting, usually enduring much longer than traditional asphalt shingles. Finally, corrugated panel systems are less expensive in both material costs and labor costs. Once the rain garden is constructed, maintenance is simple. In the weeks following the planting, you’ll want to remove any weeds until your plants are strong and healthy. Expect your rain garden to need monthly weeding during the first year’s growing season. After that, it will need to be weeded once a year. Annually, the rain garden will need new mulch for moisture retention and shrubs will need to be pruned. It is not necessary to water the rain garden unless the area is going through an extremely dry period, in which you’ll want to water the rain garden several times a week until the dry period has passed.
