EXPERIENCE MT. RAINIER LIKE NEVER BEFORE 14

Medina County Lifestyle | December 2021

THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST IS A HAVEN FOR OUTDOOR AFICIONADOS AND CITY DWELLERS ALIKE. With cities like Portland and Seattle that are driving distance from some of the most beautiful and unique natural sights in the world, this area of the United States is highly coveted for its ability to fit into the itineraries of all types of travelers – with a rain jacket in tow, of course! Recently, I had the opportunity to enjoy a three-day Seattle getaway. Over those days, I visited some of Seattle's neighborhood cocktail bars like Zig Zag Cafe, charming shops like Pike Street Press and noshed on some of the best mini donuts I have ever had from Pike Place Market's Daily Dozen Doughnuts. I even escaped on a day trip to the snowy wonderland of Mount Rainier National Park with Evergreen Escapes. I chose Evergreen Escapes, a family-owned tour guide company, because their small group trips are all-inclusive and offer a lesser-traveled experience through the beautiful natural scenery of the Pacific Northwest. During my guided tour with them, I was provided with complimentary pick-up and drop-off at my hotel, a delicious breakfast, transportation, snacks throughout the day, a fresh lunch

and all the necessary gear for the excursion. The entrance fees into Mount Rainier National Park were also taken care of. My day trip with them began bright and early with a 7:30 a.m. pickup from my hotel, the newly renovated Kimpton Alexis Hotel, from which we began the two hour drive to Mount Rainier. When we arrived at the base of Mount Rainier and took a pit stop at the Visitor's Center, the lush, green landscape was truly breathtaking. Little did we know, that after 30 more minutes of driving to our final stop at Paradise – an area of the park named for its famous views – we would be standing in, to my surprise, upwards of 15 feet of snow. Because the weather is constantly changing on Mount Rainier, our guide, Elk, told us that no two trips are the same. While snow can be expected from the months of December to March, the amount fluctuates. However, it's safe to say that many of Evergreen Escapes's winter guided tours of Mount Rainier include snowshoeing, while trips in the late spring and summer are more likely to include hiking. Since we visited in the winter, we had the opportunity to gear up in snowshoes and walk around the snowy utopia, taking pictures and enjoying the Narnia-like scenery. In some areas, snow was piled so high, it was like standing in front of a three-story building! For more information about Evergreen Escapes and to plan a a guided day trip or multi-day trip in the Pacific Northwest, visit EvergreenEscapes.com. Or snowshoe closer to home, visit the Cleveland Metroparks' hiking trails during the winter months with snowshoes rented from the Big Met Golf Course or the Hinckley Lake Boathouse & Store.

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
