Inexpensive costume makeup and too many sweets and chocolate can aggravate acne, rosacea and cause rashes. Before you apply that makeup or dip your hand in the candy bowl, check out our tips and tricks to protect your skin this Halloween.

BUY QUALITY MAKEUP It can be difficult to justify paying for quality makeup for a Halloween costume. However, keep in mind that less expensive makeup may contain ingredients that clog pores, irritate the skin and cause a rash. Consider using powders or an organic face paint kit instead. These will allow your skin to breathe through your makeup and avoid suffocating your pores. Our go to is the HH Science Mineral Makeup line because it doesn’t clog pores, and is composed of organic minerals and are also oil-free, meaning they do not support the growth of bacteria—making mineral makeup especially beneficial for patients with acne-prone skin. Mineral makeup also does not contain perfumes and chemical dyes that cause allergies, making it gentle for sensitive skin types. PREP YOUR SKIN Thoroughly moisturize your skin before you apply makeup. It will help your face stay fresh and hydrated, and will give your costume makeup a more polished look. We recommend HH Science Facial Moisturizer as it ideal for anyone who is not overly dry, but requires a light moisturizer. It can be used for those with acne or with dry skin.

REMOVE ALL MAKEUP BEFORE BED No matter how exhausted the night leaves you, be sure to properly wash your face before heading to bed. Heavy makeup left on overnight can clog pores and cause a breakout. Sleeping in makeup also results in unnecessary exposure to free radicals that can break down healthy collagen and result in fine lines from the inflammation. We recommend the HH Science Hydrating Cleanser as this cleanser gently removes oil, dirt, and make up. Green tea polyphenols combat redness while calming and soothing skin. Vitamins A, C, E and Coenzyme Q10 protect and nourish the skin. GO FOR THE DARK CHOCOLATE It’s a challenge to resist candy on Halloween. Luckily, there are some skin-friendly options available! Grab for the dark chocolate pieces, especially varieties with nuts as they provide some protein. Dark chocolate is better than jelly candies and even milk chocolate, which is higher in sugar, contains dairy, and has been linked to acne. PREVENT, NOT JUST FIX. That is the theme of the latest nutrition trend being referred to as "proactive health." While related phrases like “food is medicine” or “functional nutrition” are gaining traction, this phenomenon is anything but new. Proactive health focuses on using food and nutrition as an avenue to improve overall health and quality of life, rather than being reactive to fixing a health problem after the fact. Although the term has only recently been coined, the ideals of this lifestyle approach to health have been preached for decades by dietitians and other healthcare professionals alike. This way of thinking about food contradicts diet culture, which has relied heavily on today’s environment of media overload and misinformation. Falling into the traps of fad diets like keto, paleo or intermittent fasting, goes against the principles of proactive health. Not only are they not sustainable diet patterns, but also give rise to an unhealthy relationship with food, potentially leading to mental and physical consequences. CONTINUED >

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE (CONTINUED)

Investing in your long-term health starts with your daily choices. Food is a necessity, and every time you eat it is an opportunity to fuel your body. These decisions add up, and over time, will compound to affect your health either positively or negatively. Many people already know what to eat to live healthy – more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and less highly processed foods. This means it is not necessarily a lack of knowledge, but rather external barriers or distractions standing in the way. Simple behavior changes and building the right habits can help you be proactive now in order to live a healthier tomorrow. It is easier said than done, but the key to proactive health is consistency with a well-balanced, quality diet. Choose foods providing nourishment, not just sustenance. This delivers the calories as well as essential nutrients needed for the body to thrive. Adding a variety of colors to your diet through fruits and vegetables is vital to success. These fresh foods not only supply the body with vitamins and minerals, but also add fiber contributing to gut health. Simultaneously, the fiber can keep you full longer, helping you avoid turning to processed convenience foods. Invest in yourself by prioritizing your health now. Too often people wait until a health condition arises to change their diet. Need help? A registered dietitian can help you create a routine and stay accountable. PARTING THOUGHTS

A THANK YOU FROM TRIVS RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE ARTICLE STEPHANIE ANAYA

AS WE NEAR THE END OF 2021, WE CANNOT HELP BUT LOOK BACK AT THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF AND REFLECT. While it is very easy to think about all the negative things that have engulfed everyone’s lives, we are choosing to focus on the positive. This is the perfect opportunity for us to stop and say thank you to all of our staff, family, friends, guests, business partners and affiliates! We simply would not be here without the support of each and every one of them. Whether through dine-in, carryout orders, gift card purchases or simply kind words and encouragement, we are truly thankful. We will continue to navigate this new world safely and provide the best experience we possibly can!
