MEET SUE COSTIGAN, LOCAL BUSINESSWOMAN AND OWNER OF MEDINA COUNTY'S ONLY BARRE Sue Costigan
FITNESS FACILITY, TRU BARRE STUDIO. Since opening in June, Sue's studio has experienced immense success due to her passion for Barre fitness and her tenacious spirit. This month, Medina County Lifestyle sat down with Susan to learn a little more about Tru Barre and the story behind her success. WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I was born and raised in West Akron. HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN BARRE FITNESS? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? I have been a fitness trainer for more than 33 years. I discovered Barre when I was recovering from shoulder surgery. At the time of my injury, I was in physical therapy for my shoulder and did not have full use of my upper body. I started doing a modified version of Barre and loved how I felt after a workout, as well as the changes I started to see in my body. Once I was fully recovered, I started teaching a Barre class at the local gym, and it quickly became the biggest class on the schedule. I soon decided that Barre was different than any other exercise class I had taken or taught, so I decided to open my own Barre studio. CONTINUED >

I love that Barre is accessible to anyone—any age, any size, any fitness level. Women with all kinds of limitations and weaknesses can take a class and feel successful. The modifications we offer help anyone get a truly amazing workout that fits their fitness level and ability. I love that Barre creates strong bones by building bone density, which is very critical for aging adults. I love that with consistent practice, clients see significant changes in their bodies and become both physically and mentally stronger. I love that Barre provides a path for clients who can’t do other kinds of exercise. Barre is an effective, safe and proven way to strength train. HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS? No. I have always liked leading people and have had several management positions in my past careers. Once I discovered Barre and saw how much people loved it and how great everyone was feeling, I just knew I had to open my own studio. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT OWNING A BUSINESS IN MEDINA COUNTY? I love owning a studio in Medina County because this a great community. The area has so much to offer. Medina has a real small-town feel to it, but it is also one of the fastest growing areas in Northeast Ohio. I have had a thriving studio in Akron for five years, and I wanted to offer Medina this awesome workout as well. The community we have created in both studio locations is very supportive and nonjudgemental. As an aging female, it gets difficult to handle the workouts that are so popular now. Due to my limitations and the effects of aging, I also realized that I was not willing to sacrifice my body to get a workout. Exercise should not hurt your body. Barre

It may sound cheesy, but from an early age, my mom always taught me to ignore stereotypes and follow my dreams. I had an interest in science and medicine at a young age but doubted my ability to go into a male-dominated field like medicine. She really taught me valuable lessons about fighting for gender equality and not letting stereotypes define what I could do. I don’t remember any specific advice that my mom gave me, but I remember her always working hard—sometimes three jobs at a time—to take care of us. Her work ethic definitely rubbed off on me. I encourage my kids to work hard and be kind, but with four kids under age 8, I think the thing they hear from me most often is “Be nice to your sister!”

Stress can cause a chemical reaction or defense response in your body. It can also make it harder for skin irritations and diseases to heal. Let’s break down a few of the most common skin conditions and how stress can affect the severity or duration of an outbreak. PSORIASIS Papulosquamous disorders are conditions where both papules (or plaques) and scales form on the skin. Psoriasis is the most common condition in this group and is caused by overactive T cells in the immune system that trigger increased production of skin cells. ECZEMA Also known as dermatitis, this general term describes a wide range of skin conditions that have a few things in common: redness, swelling and itchiness. Eczema can affect males or females, regardless of age. Just like psoriasis, the stress of dealing with eczema can exacerbate the visible effects of this skin condition. Eczema is classified based on location, appearance, duration and possible causes. While we don’t know exactly what causes eczema, genetics and environmental triggers are commonly associated with flare-ups. Every individual’s trigger can be different; it is important to identify your trigger to effectively manage flare-ups. STRESS-INDUCED SKIN RASHES Our body’s physical reaction to stress can actually trigger an outbreak of hives. They can appear suddenly without warning and disappear just as fast! The size and location of the hive(s) can vary, but once present, they can become raised and itchy. In extreme cases, they can cause a swelling of the lips. Hives can actually be an indication of something more severe, like an allergic reaction. ALWAYS call 911 if your hives are accompanied by shortness of breath, tightness in your throat, swelling of your tongue or face, dizziness or wheezing. A few tips for managing stress and skin conditions: + Focus on restorative practices such as meditation, exercise or activities you enjoy to manage stress. + Find an expert skin professional you trust and can be honest and open with.
