HOME BUILDING PEAKS IN MEDINA COUNTY According to The Medina Gazette, 472 homes were built in 2018 in Medina County. This number represents a peak among homes built in Medina County over the last five years. In 2017, 452 homes were built and 430 in 2016. The steady rise in new construction may be due to a number of variables, but in an interview with The Gazette, Medina County Chief Building Inspector Christopher Randles stated that "finances combined with land availability makes Medina County very attractive."

METROHEALTH EXPANDS TO MEDINA COUNTY At the end of 2018, MetroHealth, a Clevelandbased medical institution, opened its doors in Medina County. MetroHealth Medina Health Center, located at 111 W. Reagan Parkway, is a primary care facility. Before House Bill 111 passed in September 2018, MetroHealth was prohibited from leaving Cuyahoga County. Now it are able to expand its medical services to seven other counties in addition to Medina County.

ENERGY TAX CREDITS Many of the residential Energy Tax Credits for improving your personal residence are gone for 2018. However, the remaining ETCs are available for Solar Water Heating, Solar Electric, Small Wind Energy, Geothermal Heat Pump and Fuel Cells. The credit is equal to 30 percent of the costs, including labor (Fuel Cells limited to $500). The credit is available to new construction and to existing personal residences. The Fuel Cell credit is only available for your principal residence. The credits and limitations are claimed by filing Form 5695.

PLUG-IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES The tax credit for hybrid vehicles is gone for 2018; however, there is a tax credit for Plug-In Electric Vehicles (PIEV). You can claim a credit for each new qualifying four-wheeled PIEV purchased or leased. If your use is divided between business and personal, the credit will be partly a General Business Credit and a non-refundable personal credit. These energy tax credits are non-refundable but can be carried over to a future tax filing year. The PIEVs that qualify are those manufactured primarily for use on public roads, not off-road vehicles, ATVs or golf carts. The credit ranges for $2,500 to $7,500. Be careful: the credit phases out when a manufacturer has sold more than 200,000 units. Search “plug-in electric drive motor vehicles quarterly sales” at IRS.gov to check the status of a manufacturer’s quarterly sales.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT OF THE RAIL'S HISTORY. Mike Mariola: We started our company as a little bistro in Wooster, Ohio, back in 2002. From there, we opened a steak house, also in Wooster

and then the first Rail in Akron, Ohio, back in 2011. Since then, we have opened four additional Rail locations in North Olmsted, Canton, Strongsville and Dublin. The goal has always been to support Ohio farmers and breweries. WHY A GOURMET BURGER BAR? WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE RAIL? MM: The inspiration came from our City Square Steakhouse, specifically in our bar and patio where the most popular item was our burgers. I was confident that within that steakhouse experience lived the concept for The Rail. WHAT IS YOUR CULINARY TRAINING? MM: I started working in kitchens as a dishwasher and cook when I was 14, eventually working for Chef Parker Bosley in Cleveland. Parker was one of the grandfathers of chef-inspired local cooking in Cleveland. Much of my passion for buying and cooking local came from working with Parker and meeting all the amazing farmers. After working internships in Washington, D.C. and Paris, I returned to Wooster where my wife and I opened South Market Bistro. Mike Hawkins: I started cooking and working in restaurants at a small family-owned restaurant when I was 16. From there, I attended Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in Pittsburgh, Pa., to obtain my culinary arts degree. By falling into the cooking job when I was 16, it made me realize that I not only had a knack for the restaurant industry, but I also enjoyed the environment and fast-paced aspect of it WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME? MM: I love to watch my kids play their various sports, spend time with family, outdoor activities and traveling. MH: Golfing! And anything to do with golfing! Other than that, anything outdoors really, with a focus on adventures with my wife and my dog.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A CHEF? MM: Yep, since I was 14. MH: As a child, I always enjoyed being in the kitchen with my mother and grandmother but never considered becoming a chef. I originally started college for computer engineering and realized quickly that was not going to be for me. That's also when I recognized that I thoroughly enjoyed the creativity that food allows and switched to culinary school. DO YOU ENJOY THE BUSINESS SIDE OF OWNING A FRANCHISE? OR DO YOU STRICTLY STICK TO DUTIES IN THE KITCHEN? MM: My current role is to lead the company, and I do love the business side of growing the company MH: My role with the company is a good mix of business, operations and recipe creation. As a chef, I will always love food creation and execution, but I think I equally enjoy the business aspect, the people aspect and focusing on efficiency and training of operations. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO MAKE ON THE MENU? WHAT ABOUT FAVORITE THING TO EAT? MM: The 7th Heaven is probably my favorite burger. This burger has red onion jam, bacon and truffle butter. Not too many ingredients, but the smoky bacon and the sweet onion jam go well together, and I love the truffle butter on almost anything! MH: Since I am probably the closest thing to a carnivore, my favorite burger is the Crouching Burger Hidden Bacon. This burger has two pieces of bacon hidden below the burger patty, topped with a fried wonton for crunch, slow-roasted pulled pork and Rail Sauce (which is an Asianinspired barbecue sauce involving plum sauce, Worcestershire and cilantro). Three different proteins on one sandwich—how could you go wrong?

buy from local producers as much as possible. Since we have grown a reputation for being “all-Ohio,” we often get approached with new items on the market. Our vendors know to be on the lookout for us. WOULD YOU CONSIDER THE RAIL AN "ECO-FRIENDLY" RESTAURANT? MM: Yes. I think one of the most important aspects of an eco-friendly restaurant is food sourcing. Buying all our beef, pork, chicken, milk, ice cream, eggs, lettuce, buns, beer, spirits and more will help to reduce our total carbon footprint. ARE ALL OF YOUR MENU ITEMS LOCAL TO OHIO IN SOME WAY OR ANOTHER? MM: Almost everything on the menu has at least an Ohio ingredient. Nutella is not from Ohio, but it's really good so we keep it around… ARE THERE ANY NEW LOCATIONS IN THE WORKS? MM: We are working hard to get another location in the Columbus area. SQUARE, I SPENT THE AFTERNOON BROWSING SHOPS WITH TEA IN HAND, BUNDLED UP IN SNUG WINTER APPAREL. Letting my sense of wonder and adventure take over, I came to find four attractions that I could not

wait to tell my friends and family about once I arrived home.

1. CIRCLES ON THE SQUARE: A DONUT COMPANY “I do not know anything yet, but I am going to learn.” These are the words spoken by Scott Sandusky to his wife, Melissa, when he called her to discuss his “lightbulb idea” of opening a doughnut shop. The couple opened their shop, Circles on the Square: A Donut Company,in Medina in September 2018. The business is extremely humbled by all of the support and positive recognition, receiving various awards from the Cleveland Donut Fest since 2018. With 56 unique styles of doughnuts prepared fresh, one can witness the creation of the sugary confection right before their eyes. The most bizarre doughnut request the shop has received includes strawberry glaze with bacon. For some, the opportunity to be innovative is appealing. Jackie Burns, a Willoughby resident, says if she wanted to be daring and design her own, she divulged that she would include chocolate and potato chips as her desired toppings. Prices range from $1.25 to $1.75 per doughnut. Order a dozen, and receive 10 percent off. Additionally, online ordering and catering are available. 2. THE GARDENER’S COTTAGE She wears a pink cashmere sweater, with silver jewelry to accent her features. Her long brown hair cascades over her shoulders; her eyes twinkle with a genuine sincerity. In her shop, she has devoted her entire life to helping those feel beautiful and confident, as well as making sure that one has home decor to leave guests in awe. Meet Carmen Greenberg. Carmen, the owner of the Gardener’s Cottage since May 1999, has had a passion for the retail industry since she was just 16 years old. The European-inspired boutique carries everything from elegant home decor, clothing, jewelry and more, as well as seasonal merchandise. Debbi Breck, a longtime customer and Medina resident, has been coming here since the establishment first opened. Debbi says her house is filled with items from the shop. “…Carmen is a spectacular person; she connects with all of her customers on a personal and professional level,” Debbi says. Her [items] in her store are unlike any other… they are very high-end, high-quality…” Prices vary per item, depending on what one is interested in. 3. ORMANDY’S TRAINS AND TOYS One may fondly remember playing withThomas the Tank Engine as a child. For some, trains stem far beyond just a hobby. For one man in particular, he wanted to hold onto that piece of childhood and turn it into something real. John Ormandy, the owner and train repair expert of Ormandy’s Trains and Toys, has been involved in the business for 28 years, since November 1989. John has a wide variety of train inventory to choose from, including Lionel and Marklin. Cameron Cecere, originally from Rochester, N.Y., has visited the shop for about seven years and would absolutely recommend the shop as a must-see to individuals. “…When you look around, no two trains or cars are alike,” Cameron says. “…The [intricate] detail of each individual piece is something that stands out and makes this place renowned…” Prices range anywhere from $5 to $2,000, depending on what item one is interested in. 4. SAND AND LACE FINE ART AND GIFT GALLERY Owners Lacey Huffman and Sandi Piper have proudly showcased their work since their doors opened in November 2014 in Medina. The gallery hosts art camps, birthday parties, church events, corporate events, family reunions, private art lessons, team-building events and wedding parties.
