LIFESTYLE LETTER

Wellness Letter JANUARY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF NOT ONLY A NEW CALENDAR YEAR, BUT ALSO THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SETTING PERSONAL GOALS. That marathon you've told yourself you're going to start training for for the past five years, let's start

excuses. The worst thing that could happen is that it doesn't work out and you learn something new about yourself. For example, a few years ago I tried to start training for a 5K. I ran cross country in middle school and despised every second of it, but thought I should try to push past my hatred for running and assumed that if I started doing it every day that I would eventually love it.

While this may work for some people, it certainly did not work well for me. I ran a few miles every day for about a week, hating every second of it, before I decided that there has to be a better way for me to lead a healthy, active lifestyle without hating the active part. So, I did some research and started trying out a few local gyms. I can still remember the day I tried HIIT (high intensity interval training) for the first time. It was in the summer of 2017 and after my first class I felt so incredibly tired, but so amazing. I had just completed what felt like hundreds of burpees and learned how to do my first squat clean, but it made my body feel so good. And guess what? Now I'm able to run a 5K not because I jog on a treadmill every day, but because I exercise in a way that works for my body. Whatever your goals may be, I hope that this issue will inspire you to focus on wellness in the new year. And while maintaining a balanced diet and exercise regimen are vital to your physical health, overall wellness includes your mental health as well. This month, Medina County Lifestyle encourages you to live your best life by taking care of yourself both inside and out. Whether you're looking for some helpful information about setting and reaching your goals, discovering the art of Barre fitness or want to try out a refreshing new smoothie recipe, we've got you covered.

FREQUENCY,

THE WORDS "STRESS" AND "VACATION" ARE BEING USED IN THE SAME SENTENCE. Go on social media and get bombarded with everyone’s political views, hardships and even comparing our own inadequacies to others. Another Monday approaches and we enter into the same routine of work, deadlines and family obligations, and maybe even daily disappointments. Over and over again, our mind and bodies are subjected to the added stress, which impacts our physical and mental health and can actually shorten one’s life if not given the opportunity to decompress. Even employers are finally starting to realize how these added stresses are contributing to their employee’s productivity, peer relationships and their inability to meet deadlines or take pride in their work. Research from the Incentive Research Foundation, has proven that a relaxing vacation that offers an opportunity to de-stress can stay with someone for up to six months after they return home. In fact, employees return back to work with a new attitude, feeling refreshed and ready to take on new challenges. This is just one reason why Red Travel began offering rewards trips and employee travel certificates. Do you need this type of escape? A knowledgeable travel advisor will be up to speed on the options for those who need a spa or wellness vacation. At Red Travel, we take the time to learn more about what our clients would like to accomplish during their travels. And we can generally determine, based on our conversation, if a spa vacation will help improve their physical and mental health. 12

financial e m p ow e r m e n t MAKE A RESOLUTION THIS YEAR TO IMPROVE YOUR FINANCIAL HEALTH ARTICLE WARREN WATKINS

AS WE WELCOME IN 2019, MOST OF US WILL CERTAINLY MAKE NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS THAT WE FEEL WILL MAKE US STRONGER, HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER. These resolutions usually require keen attention be paid to exercise and diets. But what about our financial health? What kind of attention should we be giving to finances and investing? Bryan Glancy, of Spinnaker Financial Group, LLC, believes that the key to being a strong investor is to be in control of your own finances. "The best thing an investor can do is be in control," he says. "Most people think that a good advisor will tell them what to do with their money. We think that's absolutely backwards. A good advisor should empower people and help them quantify their goals. They should talk with and listen to them in order to understand what they are trying to do with their money." Statements like these were used regularly as I recently had the opportunity to talk with Bryan about this often overlooked topic. Here are some very helpful tips and practical advice from our Q&A session.

If you can quantify where you are going, you give yourself the best chance of meeting that goal. HEALTHY LIFESTYLE ARTICLE WARREN WATKINS | PHOTOGRAPHY MY PERSONAL TRAINER

New Year, New Body, New You 20 MINUTES, TWICE A WEEK IS ALL IT TAKES!

AT MY PERSONAL TRAINER, OWNER AND TRAINER, ERIC SCHAEFER, HAS BEEN SHOWING HIS CLIENTS FOR YEARS HOW THEY CAN TRANSFORM THEIR BODIES WITH JUST TWO 20-MINUTE WORKOUTS PER WEEK. Sounds too good to be true, I know. But it isn't. My Personal Trainer has been able to thrive and retain it's customers for one simple reason: It works. With a personalized training schedule set specifically for you and a high intensity anaerobic workout designed to train the whole body with every visit, you will indeed see the results that you have been hoping for. I saw proof of this myself as I sat with Eric in his office, viewing the numerous before-and-after photos of happy customers; men and women, both young and old. All of them proudly showing off their results.

"A big misconception in this industry is that more is better," says Eric. "Over-training can lead to three big problems: “(1) You hit a strength plateau, (2) Sometimes women can gain weight, which is not what they intended to do and (3) The worst case scenario: You get injured. We don't want any of that...we want to train your body the right way so you get the results you want in an intense yet efficient manner."

Later, as Eric and I talked and toured the studio, I asked him, "How is it possible to get a good workout in just 20 minutes?" He immediately asked me if I was comfortable enough to get on just one machine and do a few reps so he could show me. I jumped on the nearest machine (leg extension) and, with a little tinkering of settings and weights, he put me to work. The first thing I immediately noticed was that he chose a very good weight for me to start with–not too heavy, not too light. The second thing I noticed was the pace of the reps I was taking. It was much slower than I was used to and that really made me concentrate on my form. Within about 90 seconds of doing slow, concentrated reps I had reached the point where my form was about to be compromised. He noticed this and had me stop at that point. "Now, if I were training you as I train my clients, I would already have the next machine set for you and you would then immediately move on over to the next machine and work on a different muscle group," Eric says to me. I could see then how 90 seconds on several different machines, working several different muscle groups could give me a full body workout in such a short time. It's the kind of workout that safely pushes you to your limits and doesn't require you to spend several hours per week in the gym. What a concept!

If you've ever made that New Year's resolution that you were going to get in shape (which is almost everyone), only to find yourself giving up on that resolution sometime in February or March (also almost everyone), do yourself a favor and make 2019 the year that you actually keep it by working out in a new way with My Personal Trainer!
