s we enter late summer, it becomes evident that, sometimes, you just gotta kick back and enjoy a beer. After all, the days are getting shorter, and fall begins next month. While it is still warm and the scents of flowers still perfume the air, you might as well take advantage of a citrusy pale ale that tastes just like sunshine. Another fantastic way to enjoy the remnants of summer is via a trip to a local vineyard. Many such places speckle the Northeast Ohio landscape, endowing it with an enchanting aura befitting a fairy tale. Some vineyards have tasting rooms, and one even has goats that you can feed and interact with. What may surprise you is just how close to home these dreamy destinations are.

MAKES 2 COCKTAILS

Add a half cup of cucumber slices and 2 tablespoons of basil ribbons to 1 cup of gin.

Refrigerate overnight.

Strain the gin and reserve 4 ounces.

4 ounces cucumber-basil infused gin

•

Divide ice between two tall glasses.

1 cup fresh pink grapefruit juice

he countryside of Wadsworth is, in a word, enchanting. The historic community is tucked in the southeastern corner of Medina

County, and it features lovely architecture, stunning landscapes, and a whole lot of small town charm. One building rises above the landscape, though, possessing all of these qualities as well as a secret. The wine-red Gothic Victorian predates the Civil War, and its charm and beauty are undeniable.But, unless one spots the wine-red sign out front, you might not guess that the stunning house on Acme hill is actually hiding Filia Cellars within its antique walls. "Filia is Latin for daughter," explains Winemaker and Owner Lisa Locklear as she pours a glass of Girls R Meaner, a Gewurtzraminer-

Riesling blend with tropical tones. She takes great pride in the variety of products she produces and the personality that each wine's individual flavors allow it to take on. "And it seemed an appropriate name for the business, considering how deeply rooted my family is in winemaking."

The family found its start in winemaking 1902, when her great grandfather was reputed to have won a vineyard property adjacent to the family farm from the local vet in a card game. When her father, Gregory Graham, moved to California, he began producing his own wines in Napa Valley. Filia Cellars' dry reds come from his estate in California, and all other wines are produced from the finest locally sourced fruits. Even the sides of cheese that she serves are sourced from local farmers. The business truly is home-grown, and Locklear celebrates family and community in everything she creates. "My husband and I have three daughters," she says. She pours a glass of a wine called Isabella, a dry wine made from a blend of Cab and Cab Franc. "These reds have been grown at my dad's property in California. These types of wine originally come from Europe. And, of course, this drink is named for one of my daughters." She continues to honor the tradition of family with wines Hannah and Callie, a Petit Sirah dry wine and Niagara sweet wine, respectively. She also features a Tempranillo dry wine, Lillian, named for her grandmother and the matriarch of the family. "I adore making wines," she explains as she fondly looks over the bottles she set out. "I do a secondary fermentation that converts malic acid into lactic acid, and it gives wines that buttery characteristic. In a red, it softens it, so the wines are very approachable. I was taught to do things correctly by my father, such as sterile filtering the wines prior to bottling. I sterile filter everything so I don't have to add sorbate, which some people have a sensitivity to. The goal is to interfere as little as possible during the process but still be able to deliver your winemaking style." Locklear certainly has her own style. She draws influences from her familial story, and within each bottle is yet another tale. From the origin of names to the artful blends she crafts, each wine is an experience. "Ohio is big on fruit wines, and of course the big dry reds come from our California family estate. Our goal is to have something for everybody. Whether you prefer sweeter wines, fruit wines, like our Ohio Apple, or full-bodied reds, we have something that you will enjoy." No matter your preference, you will adore the milieu of this stunning winery. From it's eco-friendly Astrapouch wine packaging to the restored interior and charming outdoor porch, there are countless surprises along the way that dazzle the eye and your taste buds. And, as an added bonus, the porch area comes alive during the summer. "I was riding my bike one summer, and I saw this house. It had been empty, and its exterior was faded. I thought to myself, that's a total wine house. THE WINERY AT WOLF CREEK Tucked into the landscape within the Barberton limits is a stunning vineyard. The Winery at Wolf Creek, located at 2637 South Cleveland Massillon Road, will enchant the eye and delight the senses. "Our most popular wines are blends," explains Owner Andy Troutman. "We grow our own grapes, as well as some fruits. I always joke that if everybody liked the same wine, we'd only sell one." Alas, we all have very different palates, so the winery produces a number of delightful varieties, with charming names such as White Lies, Redemption, and Sweet Revenge. Troutman adores the opportunity to produce such a variety, as he discovered his love of grape growing at a young age. "It started as a 4-H project," he chuckled. "When I was 10, I started growing grapes. In junior high, I tried my hand at wine making, and I realized it might be something I would like to pursue as a career." Now, he spends many of his days at Wolf Creek, which his family purchased in 2002, and he prides himself on being able to produce a product that people enjoy. He and his staff enjoy introducing visitors to new wines and helping them find a product that is perfect for them. When asked what his favorite wine is, Troutman laughed and responded, "My favorite wine? The cheap answer is the one in my glass." He goes on to explain that, since Ohio's weather fluctuates so often, each year produces different vintages that stand out. "My favorites change from year to year. If we have a hot sunny year, our red wines might shine. After cooler years, white wines might be exceptional. Or maybe a fruit wine will stand out. Itâ€™s a perfect storm, with the correct weather, variety, and treatment, and we get something different every year. The potential for variety makes Ohio wines unique." As a mom-and-pop type destination, the winery thrives off of interaction with the community. Since it is open seven days a week, every day offers another opportunity to swing by and taste wines. Plus, the location offers visitors the opportunity to feed goats. "We love what we do. The winery has been here since 1985, and we hope to continue for many years to come." H2 WINE MERCHANTS "We are kind of a coffee shop that serves wine," laughs Co-owner Whitney Harris as we sat in the cozy, rich environment of the Medina Square shop. The atmosphere is rustic, yet historic, and customers meander about perusing the rows of wine lining the interior walls. Her description certainly suits the atmosphere—relaxing music trickles through the air, and a group sipping libations laughs, the sound a ripple of silver as it floated over to our little group that was situated on cozy leather couches. "You come in, decide which wine you would like to make, design your labels, start your wine, and come back in six to seven weeks. At this point, it is bottled up, then you cork it, cap it, and take it home. It is very simple, and it is sure to hit somebody's sweet spot." e have lived here for 18 years, and we are in love with the quaintness

of the community," says Ericha Joy, who owns Wadsworth Brewing Company with her husband, Ernie. "We aimed to create a small, comfortable brewery where people could enjoy a beer or two and play games." Downtown Wadsworth is a small Victorian economic district, not unlike Medina Square. The region thrives off of its historic influence, from the tradition of maintaining a tightly-knit community to the emphasized antique architecture that so vividly characterizes the city. WBC embraces that influence, and they mix it with a cooky yet casual atmosphere to create one of the most unbeatable craft brewery experiences in Northeast Ohio. "One of the cool thing about small breweries is that they always offer something new to try," explains Joy. "When we opened, it was a goal to offer classics as well as to do something different with beer."
