are our vehicles. Kurt Loos, the owner of Montrose Laserwash and a Medina resident, knows that everyone loves a shiny, clean car. However, when it comes to cleaning, many people may not realize that car washes differ greatly in the quality of the cleaning services they provide. “Car washes with brushes tend to be an indiscriminate type of car wash, which means there is nothing sensing the size of the car,” says Loos, who was working as an engineer at NASA when he first became interested with the technology involved in car washing. “The brushes in these friction washes will keep moving until they touch the car, which can cause scratches, and in extreme instances has resulted in major damage, such as broken windsheilds. There is a wide variety of equipment that car washes can buy, and you want to try to avoid car washes with brushes. Though these are the cheapest and most common types of car washes, they have the potential to cost you a lot in the long run.” Friction car washes are filled with brushes made of cloth, foam, and bristle; though bristle brushes have become increasingly rare. There are advantages and disadvantages to using each type of brush, but the bottom line is they all touch the car, and they all scratch it. Those scratches come from both the brushes themselves and the dirt that was already on the car or the brushes. As brushes rotate and spin, they have the potential to grind coarse dirt into paint. These car washes

tend to be inexpensive due not only to the cheap equipment, but also to the cheap chemicals and cold recycled water used in cleaning. The alternative to friction car washes are touchless car washes, which will blast your car with a series of hot water, low pH soap, high pH soap, and other high-end chemicals. Montrose Laswerwash is equipped with a 360-degree rotating arm that will sense and follow the contour of cars to ensure an all-around clean for different types of vehicles. “As far as soap goes, the chemistry is everything when you are working with a touchless car wash,” says Loos. “You need quality soaps to get the chemistry right, and you need hot water. That is the only way to get a touchless wash right. As a result, it will be more expensive than friction washes, but it is worth it.” Car washes may vary in the type of soaps that they use depending on the type of washes they provide. Montrose Laserwash provides four wash options, with the cheapest option coating cars in high-end soap and the top-quality wash using the “latest and greatest car wash chemical,” a carnuaba-based car wash wax, which makes paint feel slick and look shiny. tepping into the Coffee Colony in Medina is like stepping back in time. One is instantly hugged by the warmth and coziness of the house, and the many decorations make it easy to envision the original owner, P.C. Alcott, celebrating an intimate family Christmas in 1846. It is also very easy to imagine his niece, Louisa May Alcott, penning one of her many famous novels by the fire as her family socializes after dinner. Of course, the building is no longer a home, but owner Sharon Lipton maintains a family-atmosphere. In over 30 years of business, her customers have become a family. And, without fail, the welcoming scent of coffee continues to greet them every time they enter the gourmet coffee and gift shop. “I loved gourmet coffee, but there were no gourmet coffee stores in the area,” says Lipton. “My girls were about to be graduating, and I thought opening a coffee store would be a good way to keep busy.” Over the years, she certainly has kept very busy. With nearly 100 flavors of coffee, which are available as whole beans or are ground fresh as you shop, loose leaf tea, and a variety of gifts and holiday décor, she draws in visitors from near and far. “We have a number of things that are perfect for holiday gifting,” says manager Kim Hansen, who is also Lipton's daughter. “Soup and dip mixes, chocolates, cheeseballs, and local honey and jelly are wonderful year-round. Chocolate-covered espresso beans and our $1 sample bags make perfect stocking stuffers, too.” Hansen adds even more personality to the adorable shop by providing custom-made snowman signs. She will add a little bit of flair to each character and customize them with your family members' names to add warmth to your home throughout the holidays. Still, nothing makes home warmer than the smell of freshly-brewed hot beverages. Lipton offers a wide variety of beans from all over the world. From Jamaican Me Crazy to Hawaiian Kona, there is something for everyone. “We offer flavored, non-flavored, regular, decaf, dark roast and organic coffees,” says Hansen. “And we also offer a Flavor of the Day cup of coffee for only $1. or a decade, Hospice of Medina County (HMC) has been operating Life's Treasures Thrift Shop just south of Medina Square. The

store is operated by three managers, Patty Conklin, Theresa Daniels, and Stephanie Furey, along with a team of over 80 volunteers. The store provides a unique shopping experience and all proceeds benefit Hospice of Medina County patients and their families. For nearly as long, though, the team has been operating an even more unique seasonal thrift store: Christmas Treasures.

“I have worked with Hospices that run thrift stores, but nothing as nice, well stocked, and community-supported as Life's Treasures,” says Chief Executive Officer and President William Finn. “And, I have never encountered anything like Christmas Treasures anywhere.” Operating through December 16, Christmas Treasures is filled floor-to-ceiling with an endless amount of decorations, ornaments, lights, clothing, collectibles, and more. As far as the eye can see are beautifully decorated displays of holiday goodies. The store is so beautifully arranged that it is almost mindblowing to consider that everything for sale has been donated within the last year.

“We start setting up the store in August,” says Manager Stephanie Furey. “We store the previous year's worth of donations in five storage units. We start collecting goods for the store in January. As donations come in, our 'Christmas Elf,' volunteer Dick Staufer, takes everything out to storage.” “When you see all of the boxes... you kind of get overwhelmed,” admits Manager Patty Conklin. “We just receive so many holiday donations. But as soon as we start decorating and arranging, we have an amazing time. Every year we set up Christmas Treasures in a different Medina location. So we have to rethink the layout yearly, and it is very exciting to decorate a brand new space.”

Nine years ago, the idea for Christmas Treasures was first conceived when HMC volunteer Dorothy Kreugger noticed the overabundance of holiday goods that were being donated. She suggested another space to sell holiday donations, and Christmas Treasures was born. “The generosity of the community is overwhelming,” admits Amy Wermer, Director of Human Resources. “The store’s success is a result of the vision and hard work of our store managers, the dedication of our volunteers and the overwhelming support we receive from the community.
