Celebrating Three Years of Community, Connection, and Fulfillment
January 2026 PUBLISHER
Scott Davidson | scott.davidson@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
Karin Davidson | karin.davidson@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R I AL C O O R D I N ATO R
Back in May of 2022, my wife Karin sent me a LinkedIn post about an opportunity to start a community magazine. I’ll be honest, I never expected something like this to come along so late in my career. It felt like an unexpected new path… a journey neither of us knew we were about to take. But in January 2023, together, we launched Media City Lifestyle. And truth be told, it wasn’t launched by me alone, but by the partners who believed in our vision and wanted to celebrate the community we all love. These last three years have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my life. I’ve met hundreds of incredible people: entrepreneurs, business owners, restaurateurs, butchers, bakers, and even a dinosaur maker. Our neighbors have embraced this publication with open arms. People stop me on State Street, in ACME, or at Trader Joe’s just to share feedback, ideas, and appreciation. We’re humbled every day. We truly feel entrusted with the responsibility of sharing the positive stories that make our hometown shine… and honestly, it hasn’t been a hard job. When someone unfamiliar with Media asks, “So what’s Media like?” I can’t help but gush about our sense of community and belonging. I mention the Media Theatre, the State Street Trolley, the parades, Dining Under the Stars - just for starters. “Everybody’s Hometown” isn’t a slogan. It’s a way of life. I also want to acknowledge the influence of my late father-in-law, James Murray - former general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles and co-founder of the very first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. That one house has inspired more than 380 others across 62 countries. He taught me how to start a conversation: “Where did you go to school?” “What’s your parish?” And he always ended with, “What can I do for you?” His generosity and warmth embody everything I’ve come to love about this community. Karin and I want to thank all of you for making this magazine such an important part of our lives. With deep gratitude, I’ll see you on State Street!

Routine Checkups Routine veterinary exams play a vital role in keeping pets healthy throughout their lives. During annual visits, your veterinarian can update vaccinations, run screening tests such as heartworm and fecal checks, and monitor for early signs of illness. Detecting problems at the beginning, before they become advanced, often leads to easier and more successful treatment. For example, small-breed dogs in particular tend to accumulate plaque quickly, which can progress to gum disease and even cause heart problems if left unaddressed. Weight gain is another concern many owners miss, and untreated obesity can contribute to joint strain and other chronic health issues.
Vaccines Puppies are especially vulnerable to infectious diseases, which is why vaccinations should begin at about eight weeks of age. They typically receive boosters for distemper, parvovirus, and other core illnesses every three to four weeks until they reach sixteen weeks, when they reach 3 months old, they’re ready for their rabies shot. If the mother dog was properly vaccinated, her puppies start life with short-term maternal antibodies that fade around the eight-week mark. Giving vaccines too early can reduce their effectiveness, so timing and yearly boosters are important. Some owners mistakenly assume adult dogs are immune, only to discover that preventable diseases can still occur. Your veterinarian can recommend the right schedule.
Foods to Avoid Pet owners are often surprised by how many everyday foods and plants can be harmful to animals. Online resources can help, including a Dog Chocolate Toxicity Meter that estimates risk based on your dog’s size and the amount of chocolate consumed. One lesser-known harmful food is xylitol, a sweetener used in many products, including certain peanut butters, that can be extremely toxic to dogs. Always check ingredient lists carefully. Store-bought treats, particularly jerky-style snacks, may be produced in countries with limited oversight and have a history of recalls. Even items labeled “Made in the USA” may contain imported ingredients, so choose pet treats from reputable, transparent manufacturers. If you think your pet may have ingested something dangerous, contact your veterinarian or a poison control hotline immediately. Unconditional love is only an idea until you talk about pets. Pets are part of our family and support us unconditionally. The American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) is clear - those who said their pets positively impact their mental health cited several key benefits, including:
• Help reduce stress and anxiety (69%). • Provide unconditional love and support (69%) • Offer companionship (69%). • Provide a calming presence (66%). • Are true friends (63%).
Our local Providence Animal Center offers affordable and life-affirming rescue, adoption, medical care and training of companion animals and serve as a community resource that inspires others to embrace the human-animal bond. Our Media City Lifestyle photographer, Ed Ryder, has a lifelong love of animals, which is lively and clear in every image he captures. One of Ed’s biggest gifts is his ability to connect with pets. His “Dogs of Media” Facebook group now has a following of over 1,300 local dog lovers and continues to grow. Whether it’s a cover-worthy pose or highlighting a local event, we hope you feel the heart and craftsmanship that define our magazine’s visual storytelling.

Upper Providence Preserve Opens A generous land donation and township teamwork established a new sanctuary of trails and protected habitat. On a crisp, golden fall day on November 8, 2025, more than a hundred residents and local community leaders gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of Upper Providence Preserve. It is the township’s newest expanse of protected green space. The preserve, an eight-acre sanctuary of wood-chip walking trails, mature trees, wetlands, and a serene pond, is the result of a generous land donation from residents Andy and Ginger Lewis. Their gift ensures that the land will remain undeveloped and accessible for generations to come.
Architect Bob Linn served as liaison between the property owners and Upper Providence Township. He played a pivotal role in bringing the project to life. He coordinated closely with both sides and helped transform the preserved land into a welcoming public space so that the township could proudly open it to its residents. Township Manager Barry Luber addressed the crowd, emphasizing how the project came to fruition without using taxpayer dollars. Luber explained that the township’s Public Works Department handled the heavy lifting, by clearing and manicuring trails, building a CONTINUED >

Members of the Upper Providence Township Council were also in attendance, including Chair Marsha Peterson, Vice-Chair Rasheen Merritt, and council members Elgin Akarsoy, Christen Rexing, and Fred Reid. Peterson praised the donation as “a beautiful gift to the community,” noting that the preserve advances long-standing goals of expanding open space and increasing access to nature. Akarsoy, who represents the district where the preserve sits, expressed gratitude for the rare opportunity to permanently protect land from development. Jaco Juice and Taco opened in Media in 2015. It first opened in West Chester in 2013 as a "juice bar" with a large open window facing the street in front to provide that "indoor/outdoor" feel. The concept was developed by my former partner, anchored around healthy food and drink with a SoCal vibe, something really not present on the East Coast.
After retiring in 2018, when the opportunity presented itself to get involved in Jaco, I dove right in! My former partner created an incredible brand, and I was brought in to take Jaco to the next level with my experience; I was a CPA and worked in Corporate America for 40 years. It provided the best of all opportunities for me, as I always had a passion for customer relationships and businesses. First, to work on the business side of Jaco to expand our customer ordering channels. Then, I was able to do everything I couldn't do in a corporate setting. I now get to work with my hands. I see immediate results. I get to know all about people. In 2022, we became sole owners of Jaco, and it became an opportunity to build and nurture something together with my best friend for over 40 years; my wife Donna. Now that our son Matt has joined the business, it truly is a family affair. The most important thing to our family is that our staff, and our customers, feel like they are treated like family. After both living through serious illnesses, Donna and I understand the importance of both physical and mental well-being. Everything at Jaco is made from fresh ingredients and pretty much every day serves as either our own breakfast, lunch or snack. We also participate in weekly group sessions with parents and grandparents to share and listen, keeping our minds fresh and healthy. Donna and I insist on directly procuring certain ingredients to guarantee uncompromising freshness and flavor, in addition to having excellent produce and dry goods suppliers. Matt or I directly deliver lunches to a nearby
school twice a week, something we would be happy to do for other schools. I "man the grill" all day on Wednesdays. Small business is 24/7, and honestly, it is the thing I love about it, as there is a direct relationship between what you pour into it and the success of the company. West Chester and Media both offer a village vibe and a true sense of community. We've lived together with these towns through both the highs and the lows. When COVID hit, the reason Jaco survived was because of our customers who kept coming. Over the past decade, Media has been an awesome spot and we are grateful to the thousands of loyalty members we've been honored to serve. We and our fellow businesses on State Street have been challenged this year. We love Media, and with all the recent improvements made to the town, particularly the Plum Street Courtyard, we have faith people will return and once again Media will serve as "the place to go." TRAILBLAZING Delco
DELAWARE COUNTY’S NEW INFORMATION HUB REVEALS AN AMBITIOUS, ACCESSIBLE NETWORK LINKING PARKS, NEIGHBORHOODS, AND REGIONAL GREENWAYS. ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE HWANG
28
O UT D OOR LIV IN G | ARTS + CU LT U RE
Delaware County has officially launched its new Primary Trail Network (PTN) Information Hub in October 2025. PTN is a dynamic online resource designed to help residents, planners, and local leaders understand and explore the County’s fast-growing multi-use trail system. The hub represents years of planning and community engagement. It is a major step toward Delco’s vision of creating a fully connected, non-motorized regional network accessible to everyone. The PTN Information Hub was spearheaded by Delaware County Planning Director Gina Burritt and built by the County’s GIS team led by Julie DelMuto. It brings clarity and transparency to a complex network. Users can explore interactive maps, track trail progress in real time, read detailed StoryMaps for each corridor, and review project documents. It is a highly streamlined resource for everyone, whether they’re experienced cyclists planning weekend routes or residents curious about trail improvements coming to their neighborhood. The Primary Trail Network includes 135 miles of identified trail corridors. More than 45 miles are open, with additional miles in design, feasibility studies, or long-term conceptual stages. These trails are designed to be wide, hard-surface, ADA-accessible paths that knit together the best of Delco—its parks, neighborhoods, business districts, and natural landscapes. They also form important links to the Circuit Trails, a regional initiative that aims to create more than 750 miles of interconnected trails across Greater Philadelphia.

Chester Creek Trail JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .C O M / M E D I A
29
The idea for the Hub grew from Burritt’s desire to make trail planning more accessible to the public. “The PTN Information Hub makes it easy for everyone to see where we’ve been, where we are today, and where we’re headed. It reflects years of collaborative planning and the commitment of our partners in DVRPC, the William Penn Foundation, and The Circuit Trails Coalition,” she said. Beyond recreation, Delco’s trail network is increasingly understood as a driver of economic growth, public health, environmental restoration, and quality of life. The County’s “Return on Environment” study shows the far-reaching impact of protected open space and trails: • $52 million in annual economic activity • 590 local jobs supported • $142.6 million in annual recreation benefits • More than $153 million in avoided medical costs • Near $689 million added to home values Environmental benefits are equally important, as they include reduced pollution, improved water quality, carbon storage, flood mitigation, and savings of over $120 million in stormwater management costs. As Delaware County Councilmember Elaine Paul Schaefer explains, “Trails improve quality of life by encouraging exercise, reducing medical costs, and providing access to nature for all. They also strengthen our economy and help preserve the natural beauty of Delco.”
The PTN connects residents to beloved regional corridors, including the East Coast Greenway, Chester Creek Trail, Darby Creek Trail, and Radnor Trail. Trail development continues to accelerate with dozens of active projects. Many are led in partnership with municipalities, nonprofits, and regional agencies. Communities across the county are investing in safe, accessible, and scenic pathways, including the Chester Creek Trail expansions in Middletown and Chester, new segments along Darby Creek in Lansdowne and Upper Darby, and the growing network in Chadds Ford and Concord. The new hub has been made available at a time of heightened regional enthusiasm for trails. The Circuit Trails Coalition is nearing its goal of completing 500 miles by 2025. It advocates across Delco to push for safer streets, stronger infrastructure, and seamless trail connectivity. Delaware County residents now have the PTN Information Hub at their fingertips to help shape the future of local trails. To explore and stay informed, whether you’re a cyclist, runner, walker, nature lover, or simply curious, the network is just a click away at DelcoPA.Link/PTN-Hub. “Trails like the Chester Valley and Perkiomen have become our go-tos, and every new mile added feels like an invitation to explore somewhere new.” - Manny Menendez, Regional Chairperson of Bike Chester County “This work is about building a better future for generations to come.” - Elaine Paul Schaefer, Councilmember
