LIFESTYLE LETTER
Gotta Love Local
February 2024 PUBLISHER
Scott Davidson | scott.davidson@citylifestyle.com
I don’t know about you, but this time of year I’m always torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. We’ll each arrive at different answers, but what we hold in common is the opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we highlight and enjoy what’s to love about Media. You have to love a good story, and our cover story about Calvin Price is just that; local kid grows up with a passion for music and succeeds on an unbelievable level. Performing with symphony orchestras worldwide and with such artists as Luciano Pavarotti, Barbra Streisand, Doc Severinsen, Celine Dion, and Linda Ronstadt, to name a few. A true testament of love is working with your spouse (ask my wife/editor). Discover how five local couples navigate the tumultuous waters of business partnerships, offering real-world advice for us all. You may say you love local, but what you’re really saying is that you love a good spa day. You’ll find that Joseph Anthony Salon and Spa delivers the most luxurious experience in the area. This resort offers day spa features and amenities that I would call opulent. Mud Float, Butter Créme Float, Turkish Bath with optional warm rain... yes, please! Love is not without its challenges. Author Kari Tumminia sheds light on things to consider for those in love and those still looking for love. Lastly, we suggest a short 2-hour drive to Annapolis, Maryland, where you’ll find a romantic getaway. I can say with all honesty, my wife, Karin, and I have spent several weekends enjoying this historic seaport (and seafood). "Love local” means your local businesses—those in your community—but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine, some cheese, and indulge in a movie night. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of the journey, whatever that may be. Happy February!

Power Love DYNAMIC LIFE AND BUSINESS COUPLES CREATE EXTRAORDINARY SUCCESS
At Media City Lifestyle, we know that love and commitment go hand in hand; just ask our publisher and editor team, Scott and Karin Davidson! Married for over 17 years and working together for over 22, Scott and Karin know that a great working relationship requires respect, trust, and teamwork (and humor). In honor of Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating five local couples who work together, making their businesses even better.
Gibbons Automotive – Mike and Beth Gibbons Mike and Beth Gibbons at Gibbons Automotive have been working together for 13 years. Beth handles the operations while Mike works with cars. They also juggle business with parenting their two children, Maeve (13) and Declan (11). The children visit the shop after school and are always curious about its workings. While owning a business has its challenges, Mike stated, “My wife really is the glue behind the scenes that keeps everything together. I trust her 100%.” “It’s honestly a joy to be able to work with my husband,” said Beth. “I know that probably sounds odd, but I trust him the most out of everyone in the world.”

HOTWORX – Tom and Jen Luft HOTWORX owners Tom and Jen Luft have been married for over 20 years and have been working together since 2021. The couple decided on Media because it’s Jen’s hometown and is close to the airport. When he’s not taking care of payroll, accounting, and maintenance for HOTWORX, Tom is a pilot for American Airlines. Jen is in customer care. “We’ve always made a great team even before we ran a business together because we don’t duplicate efforts,” said Jen. They have two children. “Our oldest just turned 14 in February, and we had him working here this summer cleaning part-time,” said Tom. “It’s truly a family business.”
Grande Décor – Stephanie and Joe Gillin Grande Décor designs and builds dream homes and renovations. For over 20 years, Stephanie Gillin, who is an architect, has been in charge of sales and design management, while Joe brings her designs to life. He’s on the financial side and the project manager. They have three children. “When the kids were awake during the day, I was mom. Whenever they took a nap or slept, I was Business Barbie,” explained Stephanie. “It was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in the beginning, but we’re a well-oiled machine now!” They work well together. “I can’t imagine NOT working with my husband,” Stephanie said, smiling.

The Cat Hospital – Dr. Christine and Paul Kirnos Dr. Christine Bohn Kirnos and her husband Paul own The Cat Hospital of Media. Christine shared how they met: “We got set up on a blind date by our hairdresser.” Paul added, “He said she’s a veterinarian, and that immediately sparked my interest. I originally wanted to become a veterinarian.” 20 years and 2 children later, they still have the same hairdresser! Paul manages the office and finances. Christine practices medicine and corresponds with the other doctors. They’re good friends, and they harmonize well. How do they do it? “We get asked that a lot!” Christine answered. “Well, what’s the problem? Do you not like your husband?” They both love Media. Paul quips, “I grew up in a town which was voted one of the best small towns in America. Recently, so was Media. So, I joke that I only live in the best small towns in America.”
Cafesphere – Maggie and Pawel Pasciak Magdalena “Maggie” Pasciak, owner of Cafesphere, truly appreciates that she and her husband, Pawel, work together. They met through a large Polish community in 2005. Pawel decided he wanted to work for himself, so they started in construction and rentals. After a few jobs, a wedding, and two children, the couple decided to open a café— Maggie’s dream. Maggie runs Cafesphere, and Pawel did all the needed construction every day for a full year. They both love Media, especially the community. “It just feels like such a warm, nice community,” Maggie says.

Between the smooth sounds of Harry James and the biblical story of the walls of Jericho falling, Calvin Price knew he wanted to be a trumpet player at only four years old. “[My mother] would read to me from the Bible and whenever she got to the trumpets were blasting and they blew down the walls of Jericho, I thought, ‘Oh, man. I like that.’,” said Calvin. Calvin attended Oberlin College and Conservatory and was accepted in innumerable orchestral programs. It included the Boston Symphony’s summer Tanglewood program. His summers learning from and playing for various bands taught him well. After college, Calvin played for Paul Lavalle and the Band of America which included 19 other musicians. He described it as a big band that also played concert music. “We went as far north as almost Sioux, Sainte Marie,” said Calvin. He was first trumpet on the bicentennial tour. He spent 25 years playing first trumpet in the San Diego Symphony, 4 years playing first trumpet on tour in Italy, and more. Calvin is a frequent instrumentalist in the U.S. and has performed Mark Ishram and Calvin on the Fox Studios soundstage for Miracle

with Luciano Pavarotti, Barbra Streisand, Doc Severinsen, Celine Dion, Linda Ronstadt, The Backstreet Boys, and Andrea Bocelli. He was also first trumpet for John Williams, Bill Conti, and Marvin Hamlisch. Calvin has also performed for such conductors as Bernstein, Ormandy, Muti, Fruehbeck de Burgos, Leitner, Sinopoli, Schuller, Bertini, and Temirkanov. “There’s a composer in LA named Mark Isham,” Calvin explained. “He got my [CD and resume] and then next thing you know, I’m first trumpet for Mark Isham. So, that’s where the movies came in.” Calvin met Doc Severinsen on a trip to New York when he was chosen to “stump the band.” Doc later became a good friend and recommended Calvin’s talent to Sandy DeCrescent. “Doc recommended me to Sandy. She controlled 95% of the film work in LA,” said Calvin. “If you are not on Sandy’s list, you did not work.” Being an Eagles guy, he really enjoyed playing for Invincible. In the final scene of the game, there’s a trumpet solo – it’s Calvin. You can hear Calvin in movies such as Miracle (2004), Eight Below (2006), Men of Honor (2000), and Invincible (2006). Want to learn to be a great trumpet player? “Take private lessons,” Calvin guides. He talks with children and encourages their desire to play. “I used to have a summer program called Trumpetissimo and kids would sign up for it.” He continues to strive to provide the highest level of brass instruction to participants of all ages and levels of expertise. After spending 31 years in San Diego and 4 years in Europe, Calvin, who grew up in the Philadelphia area, now lives near Linvilla Orchards with his junior prom date. Reflecting on his career, Calvin said, “It’s been a crazy ride. It didn’t turn out the way I scripted it in the beginning, but I think it turned out better.” calvinprice.com

Not to worry, Joseph Gaglioti and the staff at Joseph Anthony Retreat Spa and Salon will take care of you. “We’ve always tried to be the best in customer service,” said Joe. “That’s a continuing pursuit, and it’s always ever-evolving.” He knows that customers’ wants and needs change over time. Joe has been cutting and styling hair for over 20 years and has witnessed the growth and change in the industry firsthand. “We traveled quite a bit, looking at different resort spas, and really wanted to do something very different in the spa world,” explained Joe.
and that was a ‘spa experience.’ Getting people to get into a mud bath or a steam room that rained on top of you was a very difficult task to do,” Joe described. He began educating clients, showing that the spa is more than getting a massage; it’s creating an experience. “We start every spa service out with a complimentary foot bath. We try to have a lot of amenities: snacks, cappuccino, expresso—we do fresh baked cookies every day,” he said. “Those little touches we feel really help define what we do.” The Retreat Spa and Salon didn’t start with Joe. His father is a hairstylist as well. Even his grandmother had a salon in her home in

Delaware County. Joe found his passion and love for styling hair while working in the salon. This passion and dedication produced three locations: a flagship in Glen Mills, where he and his father first started in 2007, another at the Springfield Country Club, opened in 2015, and their venture at the Loews Hotel in Center City, opened in 2019. What’s unique about each of these locations is the different services they provide. “In our Springfield and our Center City locations, we have Turkish baths, which are these beautiful tiled rooms; they have beds, they have benches, they have fiber optic lights. The room steams; it rains from the ceiling,” Joe explained. “It is a complete experience to enhance your massage or your facial.” The Glen Mills location will be receiving a Turkish bath in late 2024 or early 2025. The spas also include services such as the Soft Pack Float, which starts with a gentle body exfoliation treatment and ends with a wrap treatment while floating on the soft pack system in a pressure-free cushion of water. They also offer a number of massages and facials provided by their experienced massage therapists and estheticians.
IT'S A COMPLETE EXPERIENCE TO ENHANCE YOUR SERVICE Each location also has a brine salt inhalation room where customers can sit and relax after they’ve had their massages. Joe noted that it’s great for your respiratory system. Joe reflected on his first days. “I remember the first week of working. Somebody pulled up in a tractor, parked the tractor in front of the salon, and was like, ‘Can I get my hair cut?’ I was like, ‘I couldn’t believe that somebody pulled up in a tractor’, and back then it was country out in that area,” said Joe with a laugh. “At first, I’m like, ‘What am I doing here?’ I didn’t want to be in the country.” After some time, Joe began to fall in love with the place and even considers himself a “Delco guy’. “The people, I think, are very different here. They all band together; it’s the area I feel has grown really well. Especially in the Glen Mills area. I’ve met some of my best friends here.”

The path to true love isn’t always a walk in the park. Between the apps, advice from all your married friends, and the blind dates your mom keeps setting up, it can feel more like making your way through a funhouse mirror maze. So, if you’re looking for your love story, here are a few of the most common pitfalls:
WATCH OUT FOR THOSE RED FLAGS:
It’s easy to get so caught up in the potential of a romance that we miss the warning signs. Whether it’s not respecting your space or being hot and cold with texts, even little red flags can turn into big problems later.
STAY TRUE TO YOU:
Falling head over heels is great, but losing yourself in the process isn’t. Stick to your hobbies, make time for your friends, and keep pursuing your goals. A great relationship should encourage you to become an even better, truer version of yourself.

It’s easy to assume that we’ll “just know” when we meet the right person. But this isn’t a rom-com! Clarity about your values, dreams, and what you need from a relationship is like having a personal love map!
NO RUSHING, PLEASE:
Don’t push those big relationship steps too fast. Focus on being present instead of rushing. Let things unfold naturally and enjoy every moment without the pressure.
SPEAK UP ABOUT YOUR NEEDS:
Communication is key! Being honest about what you need, your expectations, and setting clear boundaries makes for a healthier relationship. Honesty can feel vulnerable in the moment, but it’s the only way to build a real foundation for lasting love. Finding true love is an adventure where you learn more about yourself and grow as a person. So, take your time, enjoy the ride, and keep your heart open.

Italian Cosmo Warmth ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KARIN DAVIDSON
This Italian Cosmopolitan is an Inviting Twist on the Classic Favorite Tyler Widmann at la Padella in Media offers up an Italian Cosmo. You may never have heard of one of the key ingredients. Tuaca is an Italian brandy with subtle notes of vanilla and Mediterranean citrus, hints of butterscotch, cola, and dried fig. Amaretto, another ingredient, is an Italian almond-flavored liqueur that originated in Saronno, Lombardy. Combining these two ingredients along with Stoli, cranberry, and lime creates a warming and aromatic profile in a Cosmopolitan.
ingredients: Using a cocktail shaker with ice, combine: • 1 oz Amaretto • 1.5 oz Stoli Vodka • .5 oz Tuaca • .5 oz Cranberry Juice • .5 oz Lime Shake and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a slice of lime. lapadellamedia.com Happy hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 3-5 p.m.
