Scenic parks, groomed trails, and rideable town streets make biking in DELCO a great activity and sport. Not to mention bike riding has soared in popularity since the pandemic. Come ride along and read how and where to connect with other cycling enthusiasts. Take your exploration back in history at the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum in Media. Here you will learn, honor, and remember the stories for the men and women of our Military. Filled with historic documents, videos, and exhibits you’ll discover our hometown heroes. What if you knew there was a community within your community– one that could help you live longer, boost your mental health, expand your social circle, and help you explore Media and the beautiful surrounding areas in a whole new way? Media is home to an amazing bicycling community, and whether you’re an experienced cyclist or want to try a new hobby, it would be the perfect way to adventure close to home! Depending on your interests and your skill level, there are three ways to start or expand your biking hobby: Mountain biking, gravel riding, and road riding. Mountain biking is off-road, more technical and an exciting way to connect with nature. Road riding, on the other hand, is done on paved roads, allowing you to ride for miles and miles. Gravel riding falls in the center, usually done on paved trails or woods trails that aren’t too challenging (minus the logs, rocks, streams, and other obstacles of mountain biking). The good news? Living in Media means that you live in the perfect place to take your choice, or try all three.

TRY THESE GREAT, LOCAL LOCATIONS: Mountain Biking - Valley Forge Park, Harmony Hill Trails, Brandywine Trails, or Indian Orchards, (a former Girl Scout Camp in Media) Gravel Riding - Chester Creek Rail Trail, a 3 mile, 10ft wide, ADA-compliant paved bike trail, Chester Valley Trail, Valley Forge Park, or Linvill Trail, which connects to the Chester Creek Trails If you’re interested in road riding, Ellen Evans, President of the Delaware Valley Bicycle Club (DVBC. org), recommends joining one of the many local bike clubs– a great way to explore road biking and benefit from safety in numbers. Bike clubs, like the DVBC, are the perfect way for novice and experienced riders to benefit from the socialization, support, and connection offered by a club, while also benefiting from the physical, mental, and emotional impact of biking.

If you’re an experienced biker, you can enjoy one of the many meetups and bike tours offered by local clubs or become a leader for a growing community of less experienced riders. New riders can participate in led rides, in which experienced riders lead groups of bikers on pre-mapped rides focused on secondary roads with less traffic. No matter your experience level, the biking community is warm, supportive, and welcoming of new members. When talking about the family-like atmosphere of her local bike clubs, Evans describes supporting new members. “It’s so fulfilling to me to see someone else fall in love with cycling… to see someone get so much joy from something that you love. The socialization, exercise, and connection are like the best antidepressant out there!”

Bird Watching Ever since my interview with Debbie Beer, president of the Birding Club of Delaware County (BCDC), I have taken longer to admire the birds I come across in my life. It is hard not to after hearing and feeling her passion for this hobby. During our conversation, we discussed how someone can get started with birdwatching, how she started on this journey, how birdwatching can impact conservation efforts and even how the hobby itself can become even more welcoming. BCDC has a lot of great activities and initiatives that their members can participate in, and it is clear that they care deeply about their community. Anyone, anywhere can be a birdwatcher and the hobby can be passionate or easy-going. You can travel to the nearest state park, or you can be just as likely to see many birds in your backyard because they are everywhere! Debbie lives in the suburb of Springfield and has documented 110 types of birds in her backyard alone. BCDC is a welcoming club - all of their activities and outings are free to anyone who would like to participate. They enjoy helping new members discover the beauty of birds. CONTINUED >

One of the best benefits is the interconnectivity one can feel simply by being still and taking time to watch beautiful birds. Here are a few things Debbie recommends for new birdwatchers: • Join a local club in your area such as the Birding Club of Delaware County (BCDC) or join a birdwatching field trip. • Multigenerational - Anyone of any age can participate! • Binoculars are handy to have but they do not need to be high-end or pricey to get the job done. In fact, some libraries will lend them out. Some bird watchers can spend hundreds of dollars on binoculars, but you can easily start with less. Start with something offering at least 8 times magnification, A 25-30 mm lens is lightweight, but a 40 mm will allow more light. • Don't want to be out and about? A bird feeder can be a great gathering place for birds. • Places to see birds in Delaware County: Haverford Reserve, Ridley Creek State Park, Tyler Arboretum, Hildacy Preserve, Marcus Hook Municipal Park, John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, and Governor Printz Park. Many of the parks have various ADA Accessible features - Call ahead to get more information.

THERE ARE SO MANY BENEFITS TO BIRDWATCHING. • When asked about the benefits one of the first things Debbie said is that quite simply one of the best benefits is the interconnectivity one can feel simply by being still and taking time to watch beautiful birds. • The Trifecta: Nature, Exercise and Social. Many physical and psychological benefits of birding are highlighted in the book, "Ornitherapy" co-authored by Holly Merker. Holly is an outstanding birder, educator, and founding member of BCDC Rose Tree Park HawkWatch, the only official hawk-watching

site in Delaware county, and part of a national network of hawk watchers documenting raptor migration.” • Conservation - There are many activities that seek to conserve and restore wildlife habitats and bird populations so that birds will always be able to be admired and observed.

ABOUT THE BIRDING CLUB OF DELAWARE COUNTY Debbie Beer exudes passion and excitement about bird watching. This passion has brought her all over the world and has driven her commitment to lead this local club. When asked how she got started she said that her “spark bird” was at a park and spotting a bald eagle. After that, she was hooked! A spark bird is described as a bird that sparks one’s interest in birdwatching. Here are a few tidbits about BCDC: • They hold 1-3 field trips a month in and outside of Delaware County - the calendar is up to date! • Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday from 7:30 - 9pm of each month September to June featuring speakers about all types of topics: Trips, Habitat restoration. These are currently running virtually and feature a different speaker. • Newsletters are shared twice a month to keep members up to-date and informed about birdwatching and how they can stay involved. • Participates in a number of volunteer bird counts and conservation activities throughout the year.

You can take part by taking pictures of anything wildlife: Birds, plants, critters etc and then uploading them to www.iNaturalist.org BlueBird Nest Box Monitoring - April 1st through July. Bluebird nest boxes are built and then mounted so that bluebirds have a place to nest. Throughout Pennsylvania, volunteers monitor and count bluebirds and their fledglings so that each year the population of these birds can be conserved. New Birds Arrive everyday throughout the Spring season as birds migrate to where they will be nesting. Delaware County is a prime location because it is in the pathway and also has great habitats such as the Delaware river and Chesapeake watershed. Flycatchers Orioles Thrushes Warblers Breeding raptors like Osprey Wading waters will host birds like green herons and great egrets

Cook one cup Arborio rice with diced onions 1/2 cup white wine 1/2 cup chicken stock until al dente Add 1/2 cup heavy cream and 1/2 cup parmesan cheese and stir. For the sauce: • Cook 1/4 cup shallots • 1/2 cup white wine • 1/2 cup heavy cream and reduce down by half and then strain the shallots out • Add 1 cooked beet and emulsify in blender with 1/2 stick of butter, salt and pepper to taste • Julienne granny smith apples and fresh fennel tossed with lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste and add on top to garnish.

TAP HONEY CHIPOTLE WINGS • 10 Wings cooked in the fryer for 5-7 minutes • Tossed in Honey Chipotle Sauce For the Sauce • 1/2 cup honey • 1/4 cup chipotle peppers • 1/2 diced onion • 2 cloves garlic minced • 2 cups ketchup • stick of butter • Cooked down until thickened and then blended up and tossed with wings. • Serve with blue cheese or ranch

Mayor Bob McMahon, a Vietnam War Veteran and World War II Navy Combat Veteran Ed Buffman came together in 2005 to open the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum as a way to honor veterans and teach the community about their legacy. It originally began as a World War II museum featuring local interviews of World War II veterans and memorabilia on display before expanding to different exhibits expounding the Korean and Vietnam wars. The museum also films war reenactments for World War II in the Pacific, Women in the Military, and a few others. These films are accompanied by lesson plans for the general public and are available for both high school and middle school educators in either 2-day or 5-day lesson plans. Jolene Buffman, Museum Administrator, encourages families to take a trip down to The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum so they can learn about “Veterans, their legacy, the stories that we tell… these are all things that people should know.” The museum invites anyone with an interest in the military and history to learn the stories of both the living and fallen soldiers who sacrificed themselves for the sake of protecting our country Currently admissions to the museum are free of charge. Local Artisan Boulanger Patissier Couple Love Media IT 'S OUR LOCAL COMMUNIT Y THAT THEY CREDIT

Having become a staple in South Philadelphia over the last two decades and known for its French pastries, baguettes, and small menu of breakfast sandwiches and banh mi, the second location of Artisan Boulanger Patissier made its downtown Media debut in early 2022. Run by husband and wife team, Troy and Mui Eap, the authentic bakery is a must-visit for mouthwatering baked goods and desserts. Troy’s family has a long history in the baking industry. His brother-in-law, the French-trained

confectioner behind the original Philadelphia-based Artisan Boulanger Patissier, and his father, who worked in a donut factory in York, PA in the 70’s eventually opened a local Philadelphia donut shop, starting the now family-wide baking tradition. In his interview, Troy chuckled as he admitted he once swore he would never get into baking as a career. The early mornings of helping in the family business before school had convinced him that another career would be a better fit. On his quest to become anything-but-a-baker, Troy attended DCCC and West Chester University, with plans of becoming a math teacher. While in school, he and his wife recall often venturing into Media for dates. They have fond memories of romantic evenings at Dining Under the Stars and beautiful meals at many of the local Media restaurants. They both fell in love with the town.

Troy realized that teaching was not his calling, and he and his wife returned to what was most familiar– the food industry. In 2015, Troy and Mui opened a restaurant in Philadelphia, but they both dreamed of coming back to Media. In 2021, that dream became a reality when they leased their now State Street location. After nearly a year of preparations, the doors of the Media Artisan Boulanger Patissier finally opened. Troy and Mui have made this artisan shop their own. Their skill, high standards, passion, and creativity – and the impeccable baked goods– make a great addition to the already-impressive Media food scene. “I actually love doing it, except for waking up early.” Troy smiles in the interview. “We put out a product and people love it. We have such pride in what we create. That makes the lack of sleep go away.” CONTINUED >

Mui chimes in, “We love to make new things. We love a challenge. We’re always looking for ways to make something that’s already really good even better. It’s so rewarding to see our customers…It makes us want to make more things and come up with new items for them to try and enjoy.” They both speak fondly of Media, crediting the local community for supporting them at a time when the future of the new shop was uncertain. After a family tragedy caused the shop to unexpectedly close for 4 months, members of the community left messages and taped notes to the door wishing them well and hoping they would open again soon. “At that moment, we knew there was no way we were going to let this shop close,” said Troy. In fact, Troy and Mui were so moved by the showing of local support, they saved those anonymous notes. You can find them still hanging on a bulletin board in the shop even now! Before the end of the interview, the shop owners shared that there is a name change in the bakery’s future. The current name is fitting– Boulangier is more than just a name for an authentic French bakery. In Paris, shops bestowed the distinction of boulangier must bake their confections on-site in order to hold the title, differentiating them from regular pastry shops. This same distinction is easily held by Troy and Mui, as they are committed to the on-site creation of all of the baked goods the shop sells. You don’t want to miss out on the authentic baked goods and welcoming environment they’ve created with their hard work, dedication, and warm spirits. The little French bakery at 27 West State Street is sure to be a long-time part of the growing list of downtown Media businesses we all love.

Ridley Creek State Park

RIDLEY CREEK STATE PARK - 14 VARIOUS TRAILS This park encompasses 2,600 acres of Delaware County woodlands and meadows. The gently rolling terrain of the park, bisected by Ridley Creek, is an oasis of open space and is also a popular destination for trout fishing. Visitors interested in the local history can visit the Colonial Plantation, a living museum that is open on weekends from April - November.

ROSE TREE PARK The park is situated on 120 acres and features grassy rolling hills, woodlands, an outdoor gazebo that houses popular summer festivals, picnic areas, and more. You can visit three historic buildings in the park: the Leedom House, the Hunt Club, and the former Rose Tree Tavern which houses the Delaware County Visitor's Bureau. The old tavern was built in 1737 and appears on the National Registry of Historic Places.

GLEN PROVIDENCE PARK - 5 TRAILS Glen Providence is a 33-acre park between Media Borough and Upper Providence. The park was originally dedicated as a bird sanctuary and visitors can still enjoy bird watching, walking, hiking, fishing and more. Most trails within the park lead to the scenic pond at the park’s center.
