According to a US census, between 2019 and 2021, the number of people primarily working from home tripled from 5.7% to 17.9%. The home office is the new norm and your satellite office is probably one of the many wonderful coffee shops Media has to offer. March is our “Home and Design” issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn't that easy, so we’re bringing you inspirational photos and ideas to help you transform your home. New Solar Charging Station at Media – Upper Providence Library A solar-powered charging pole is now at Media-Upper Providence library near the front entrance. The station allows us to charge mobile devices 24/7 while outside the library and pairs perfectly with outdoor Wi-Fi access. The solar project was financed by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development, and Keystone Communities Program awarded through a collaborative effort by the Swarthmore Public Library, Delaware County Libraries, and Senator Tim Kearney.

Karin and Scott Davidson Publisher Scott Davidson began his career in the early 80’s as graphic designer and then creative director in an era he calls “BC”, before computers. Around the same time, Karin Davidson, also a talented creative, began as a TV producer in news stations in the US and the Caribbean spanning 20+ years. After they met, the creative duo spearheaded a local creative agency for over 20 years. Now, Karin is a Guidance Coach helping others deal with life’s hardships as well as editor of Media City Lifestyle. LAUREN’S TOP 5 INTERIOR DESIGN SECRETS FOR CREATING GORGEOUS & INVITING SPACES 1. Pare down what you have Many homeowners make the mistake of having too many things in their spaces. Simplify by choosing things you love and work the best in your space. Donate the rest, and never keep anything you don’t love out of guilt. Tip: Rotate your favorite pieces in and out, either from room to room or from storage to room to keep things fresh. 2. Mix the old and the new Mixing old and heirloom pieces with newer items helps your home decor look and feel intentional. Experiment with how family pieces, vintage finds, and new items work together– you’ll be surprised at the beautiful combinations you can create! Tip: Purchasing new items for your space can make your home feel like a catalog. Instead, find pieces from a variety of sources that you love for a completely custom feel. 3. Thrift wood, splurge on upholstery Classic, big-ticket pieces made from wood can often be found in vintage and consignment shops. They’re designed to stand the test of time. Saving money by thrifting wood furniture will help you stretch your budget and splurge on upholstery pieces, which should be purchased new. Tip: Consider how furniture will be used and who will be using it. Make sure your purchases are a practical fit for your needs as much as they are beautiful additions to your space. 4. Pay attention to scale In interior design, what you buy is just as important as what size you buy. Furniture, rugs, and window treatments can maximize the look and feel of your room or prevent you from creating something that is both functional and gorgeous. How your large items fit creates the foundation for everything else. Tip: Large furniture and oversized rugs can define spaces and add intimacy to a big room. Smaller pieces and decor items can be combined to create a more balanced feel. 5. Less is more When decorating a room, start with nothing and add things one at a time, stopping when it feels complete. Prioritize filling your space intentionally. World famous Ice Sculpture Philly Company carved over 20 ice sculptures with chainsaws, scrapers and more into beautiful local masterpieces. Taking the family around to polar bears, Media specialties, inventive designs, a sledding bear, a tree of life, and others was a great family day and just fun to walk around, absorb and take selfies. Pictures with Ice Princesses and their buddy, crafts, and a hospitality tent were bonuses. A great highlight was the life sized baby grand piano carved on the spot and then played in a concert for all of us. Thank you to Media Business Authority and the sponsors for putting this all together.

Neighbors visited this family friendly event to explore the seasonal sculptures and to get their photo ops in, a tribute to ‘Everybody’s Hometown’ by the clock tower and much more. ‘Ice on State’ provided a great opportunity for leisure seekers to stroll around taking in the artwork as well as Media shops, many of whom had their customized ice sculpture of their business. It proved to be a superb day for many of our local shop owners, who enjoyed entertaining customers and the boost in an often slow business month. One of the fun activities for the kids included a ‘Make it Take it’ craft workshop at Homesewn on State. A tent was also available for guests to savor hot and cold drinks as they took in the fabulous concert sponsered by Media Arts Council with the baby grand piano ice sculpture thanks to Morris Brothers Investments.

Alison Jaeger Fresh Look Design Would you like to add style and beauty to your front entrance? Add a container or two. Planters filled with seasonal foliage and blooms are my favorite way to dress up any doorstep. Container gardens soften the harsh lines of a home’s architecture, breathe life into your entryway, and make your front door a stylish destination for guests and family alike. Best yet, spring planters offer a quick and easy way to bring spring’s first blooms right to your door. Whether planning a container garden for myself or a client, color and texture play a huge role. I select plants with interesting foliage that is varied in color and form. This way, the container remains visually appealing long after the blooms have faded. Of course, I also select plants that have long blooming times and in general, are not too finicky. I hope sharing the following tips will inspire you to plant your own spring container garden. I’ve found that in addition to upping your curb appeal, container gardens bring a smile to all who see them. About the Author: Over 20 years ago, I purchased my first home and garden, a turn-of-the-century Baltimore city row house with a postage stamp for a garden. I was hooked! Transforming old, fussy, and outdated into a welcoming, bright, and functional space that reflected personal style while still remaining respectful to the context of the space became a lifelong obsession. I’ve renovated a number of homes and helped friends and neighbors with their own home and gardening challenges: rearranging furniture, paint choices, planting a new garden, caring for plants, or lending an eye to an area that ‘wasn’t working. I appreciate the potential of a gutted house, an untidy garden or a perpetually messy corner. Fresh Look Design, a home and garden design business that perfectly pares my professional experience in the graphic design world with my lifetime love of home and garden design. My container garden services quickly became one of the simplest ways that home and business owners alike could up their curb appeal. Better yet, they found that having beautiful containers filled with seasonal creations brought beauty and joy to their doorsteps. Beauty and joy - that’s a win in my book!

1 CHOOSE THE RIGHT CONTAINER. I recommend using containers that either match or complement your door color. Try a pair of matching containers flanking each side of your door or a group of 3 containers of varying sizes positioned to one side of the door. For the most impact, select large containers (at least 20” wide) rather than a bunch of smaller ones. They are easier to care for. Plus, you can fit more plants!

GOOD SOIL = HAPPY PLANTS. Use the best potting soil that fits your budget. A potting soil with a slow-release fertilizer will feed your plants for up to three months.

LIGHTER CONTAINERS. Fill the bottom third of your container with leftover plant pots turned upside down, packing materials, or recycled crushed cans. It’s a great way to reuse materials while making your container lighter. Then fill the container with potting soil, leaving the top 2 inches free of soil.

PLANTING GUIDE. Place taller plants towards the back and middle with the shorter plants spilling over the sides and front. Remember symmetry will look the most balanced.

PRO TIP. When potting up containers that flank a door, plant each container as a mirror image of the other.

Q: WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE WILLS, TRUSTS AND ESTATES FIELD OF LAW? A: I started working for a law firm helping very large companies conduct international transactions; I was essentially a lawyer to other lawyers. No client connection. Estate planning is unique. When a client walks into the office, they are an individual, a family and a story. They tell me their hopes and fear for their family, turning over the responsibility of caring for the people that they most treasure. As an attorney, you can get no higher responsibility.

Q: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN ESTATE PLANNING? A: Failure to plan. When someone passes away, the decedent’s planning and assets are captured in a “snapshot” that

Q: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO SOMEONE’S ASSETS WHEN PLANNING? A: There are two, paying for nursing home care and failure to consider asset protection strategies. Nursing home care can run $8,000-$15,000 a month. Pre-planning is essential. When someone doesn’t pre-plan, it’s “crisis planning”, which means someone is already in the nursing home, making protecting assets more difficult. Similarly, when a parent gives assets to a child, those assets are exposed to creditors, taxes, lawsuits, and more. When an estate reaches a certain size, it's important to consider how to protect those assets, in your children’s hands and to preserve those assets through asset protection strategies.

Q: IF SOMEONE MAKES CRITICAL ESTATE PLANNING MISTAKES, IS ALL LOST?

A: No. Even if you made any (or all) of the mistakes listed above, there is hope. Children can cooperate with each other to work together, be transparent and discuss how best to take care of a parent. We deal with a lot of families when we administer an estate for someone who passed away. A loving legacy, one where children know the importance of family and watch out for each other, can fix estate planning mistakes. When you ask whether $30,000 is worth it for you to not speak to your brother and sister again, some answer “yes”, and some answer “no”. Leaving a good family legacy can surmount estate planning mistakes.

in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES

Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
