February is Love Local in Media This magazine issue resonates with me deeply. I’ve lived in a number of places, and I’ve had the good fortune to travel the world with my wife. But what’s truly apparent to me more than ever is, “Media is Everyone’s Hometown”. And after 20 years of living here, I’m happy to call Media my hometown. Media is what I think we all strive for, a community that welcomes all, no matter where you’re from or who you are. Media embraces our community’s past, our future, and our diversity. All of which weave the colorful tapestry of Media. Our February “love local” issue is dedicated to all things that make up our community. I would say that this theme is truly what makes our community our home. Our cover highlights a Philadelphia story that spans 40 plus years. Former Eagles General Manager Jim Murray and Coach Dick Vermeil's relationship embodies Philly brotherly love. Both men together and individually have made an everlasting impact on each other and our community. Media Borough Gets New Wayfinding Signs Over the years Media has developed directional signs of very diverse sizes, shapes, colors and designs. To address the problem, the Borough obtained grant funding to create a Wayfinding Master Plan. The Plan was developed to make it easier to visit, explore and enjoy Media destinations and attractions by creating a system that includes not only traditional signage, but also brochures, kiosks, gateways, banners and digital communication, all working together to communicate to visitors that Media is a friendly city and convey a message of welcome.

Media Goes Environmentally Plastic Bag Free Media Borough is no longer offering single-use plastic shopping bags, plastic straws, and drink stirrers. Local merchants will provide patrons with paper bags that have at least 40% recycled paper stock or reusable bags. The borough is urging customers to bring their own reusable bags when they shop. “We believe it’s best for the environment, best for the people of Media, and something that the business leaders in Media will be able to enforce in their own operations,” Borough Council member Mark Paikoff said.

Pennsylvania Institute of Technology Celebrates 70th Anniversary Pennsylvania Institute of Technology is celebrating its 70th Anniversary. Founded in 1953 by Walter Garrison, an aerospace engineer, P.I.T. focused on math and science training for pre-engineering students. Dick Vermeil and Jim Murray - a Ph il ly L ove Stor y Jim Hired Dick and Made History

In 1976, Philadelphia Eagles general manager, Jim Murray convinced Dick Vermeil to come to Philly and coach the Eagles. The team had not qualified for the postseason, nor won a playoff game, or clinched their division since 1960. Dick was the head coach of the UCLA Bruins who had just defeated the top-ranked and undefeated Ohio State in the 1976 Rose Bowl when Jim Murray tracked him down. But not before Murray and Eagles owner Leonard Tose had interviewed a cavalcade of contenders like Norm Van Brocklin, Hank Stram, and Joe Paterno just to name a few. Apparently, the Rose Bowl victory turned out to be the nexus of the soon to be Eagles coach. Vermeil caught Murray’s attention while he was watching the Rose Bowl game on television New Years Day. Murray and Tose flew out to California and were staying in a bungalow at the famous Beverly Hills Hotel where the first meeting with Vermeil took place. So long story short, Murray told Vermeil “you will never see fans like you see in Philadelphia – they will boo you when you are wrong but they will support you always.” Yep, that’s Philly all right.

During the initial interview with Murray, Dick said, ‘Why would I come to Philadelphia?’ Murray said “Coach, I’m going to tell you something. You come to Philadelphia and these three things will happen. Not only will you move to Philadelphia, you’ll bring your family, and you’ll stay here the rest of your life. You’ll never leave, and you’ll become a household name, no matter what else you do in your life.” From Jim Murray’s Book “Life is an Audible”: With Dick’s opening session at the Eagles: at his first training camp was a scene from a movie. First of all, he was like General Patton preparing to go into battle. He knew every detail of every phase of the organization. He knew instinctively if he had the troops or if he didn’t. He used analytics before analytics were invented. I never met anyone more prepared for anything in my life. He had stacks of detailed notes and statistics on every single player on the team. After the first day of practice, Dick confided to me. “We are not very good. We’ve got a long way to go. We’ve got to build.” Dick was then and is now a very emotional guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. He got his players to listen to him because he himself is a great listener.

Dick said, “Jimmy, whatever went on before, it’s a whole new path and I won’t judge the past or anyone for where we are right now. We’re awful but you and I have to prove ourselves now.” It took some time and a lot of work, but in 1980 Dick and Jim got the Eagles to Super Bowl XV. Dick Vermeil is known to everyone as an incredibly kind person and an intense head coach - a very powerful combination that can win games and help people. And true to Jim’s prediction back in ‘76, Dick is a household name and even though he has successfully coached in other NFL cities, he and family live here. Jim and Dick’s friendship continues to this day. They meet a couple of times a month at Jim’s home in Rosemont to catch up and reminisce. Names circle the room with the like of Leonard Tose, Don Rickles, Jaws, Herman Edwards, Bill Bergey, Vince Papale and others. If there was ever a story of Philadelphia brotherly love…just ask Jim & Dick. This Pomegranate Margarita is a bit sweet, a little tart and absolutely perfect. This beautifully bright red and festive pomegranate cocktail is easy to make and one of my favorite margaritas hands down! Pomegranate Margarita Recipe Tips This cocktail is amazing just served as is however, it’s even better with salt on the rim. Sugar is also a great option if you like sweeter drinks. --Adjust the ingredients to your taste. the beauty of making drinks at home is that you can adjust the flavors to your taste. More juice, less tequila, it’s all up to you.

--If this margarita is not sweet enough for you, you can add agave syrup or simple syrup.

• Triple Sec: Grand Marnier (orange liqueur) can also be used. • Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice is a must. • Garnishes: Salt, pomegranate seeds, lime wedges.

INGREDIENTS • Pomegranate Juice: I usually buy Pom. Keep it chilled in the fridge. • Tequila: I usually make cocktails with tequila blanco, also known as silver tequila. I also make mixed drinks with tequila reposado, which is aged in oak barrels for as little as two months and up to a year.

HOW TO MAKE POMEGRANATE MARGARITAS • Salt the Rims: Pour a small amount of pomegranate juice in a small shallow bowl or plate. Spread the salt on a small plate. Moisten the outer edges of the glasses with the pomegranate juice, then coat with the salt. • Mix: In a small pitcher mix the chilled pomegranate juice, tequila, triple sec and lime juice. Mix to combine. • Serve: Fill margarita glasses with ice cubes, pour the pomegranate margarita and garnish with lime wedges and pomegranate seeds. www.lemonblossoms.com

EASY YUMMY BREAKFAST PIZZA - TERRY DAVIDSON INGREDIENTS • 8oz pkg crescent rolls • 1 lb hot or mild sausage • 1c shredded sharp cheddar cheese • 5 eggs beaten • ¼ c milk • ½ tsp salt • 2 Tbs grated parmesan cheese • 1/8 tsp pepper • 1 small onion chopped and sautéed

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cook sausage in a medium skillet until brown. Drain and set aside. 2. Separate rolls into 8 triangles and place the crescent rolls with points into center of a 12 inch pizza pan. Press edges together to form the crust and seal perforations. 3. Spoon sausage and onions over the dough. 4. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese over the sausage. 5. Mix all the other ingredients except parmesan cheese and pour over the top. 6. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. 7. Sprinkle parmesan cheese on the top and bake 5 more minutes.
