There is the emotional impact of interacting with a pet, but also real, physiological changes that improve your well-being. That pet needs you for who you are, so you can be just that – who you are. When the pet is with you, you feel better, have increased hope in your life, can read more confidently, walk farther, and tell him your secrets - because he promises not to tell anyone, ever Petting a dog releases the mood elevating hormones, serotonin and oxytocin, and reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Petting a dog (or cat or bunny) also lowers blood pressure and slows heart rate. Those changes make us feel lighter, calmer, and more relaxed. The PAWS for Reading program builds on that calm moment to help support children’s literacy goals. Reading to a sweet, non-judgmental dog allows a struggling or hesitant reader to relax. Time spent reading to a dog increases fluency, reduces anxiety, and fosters a love of reading. Bring the kids to a one-on-one PAWS for a Reading session with a PAWS therapy pet at one of their partnering libraries.

The Origins of AppleJack Apple brandy was first produced in colonial New Jersey in 1698 by William Laird, a Scots American. Laird's great-grandson, Robert Laird, who served in the Continental Army, incorporated Laird's Distillery in 1780. The oldest licensed applejack distillery in the United States, Laird & Company of Scobeyville, NJ was, until the 2000s, the country's only remaining producer of applejack, and continues to dominate applejack production to this day.

Like most classic cocktails that have stood the test of time, the Jack Rose’s beauty lies in its simplicity. When properly executed, the balance of Applejack, freshly squeezed citrus juice and genuine pomegranate grenadine make for a truly sublime cocktail. The Jack Rose recipe appeared in print for the first time around 1905, apparently given to Bill Boothby by downtown New York bartender, R. H. Townes. Over the years, there have been different theories attributing the cocktail’s name to gangster ‘Bald Jack’ Rose or Jersey City bartender, Frank J. May, aka Jack Rose.

In the fall of 2019, Chef CJ of Cedar Creek Catering, Paul Mickle of Media Food Bank, and Pastor Laurie Ann Rookard of Media First United Methodist Church met to discuss the annual Thanksgiving food drive. In years past, the Food Bank had given out frozen turkeys. Chef CJ, who had just signed a lease on the church’s hall offered to prepare free meals as a gesture to bring together the food bank recipients and the church congregation & their families, inviting everyone to come share a meal. In 2020, it became an annual event with much the same idea, but grew slightly as more folks knew about it. Fast forward to 2023 and the “Community Thanksgiving”, as it’s called, is celebrating its 5th year. With donations of money and food from local residents, civic groups, churches and businesses, the event now serves over 600 people, growing steadily each year. Under the direction of Chef CJ, almost 80 local volunteers spend up to 200 hours of manpower preparing for the big day. Chef CJ shared that the coordinated effort between the church, food bank, fellowship house, and the volunteers is like commanding an army. And the list of food required could feed an army as well.

“This year we expect to prepare approximately 35-40 turkeys, 300 pounds of mashed potatoes, 300 pounds of glazed carrots, 200 pounds of green beans, 15 pans of stuffing, 10 gallons of gravy, and 10 gallons of cranberry compote. Not to mention the desserts,” explained Chef CJ. The free meals are available to anyone who would like one. Take a meal to go or stay and enjoy with others in Cedar Creek’s event hall. “The outreach from the community is what makes this special. Many of the volunteers return year after year. It’s heartwarming to see so many other families come together as a group.” according to Chef CJ. The William Holder Realty Group, Media Providence Friends School & Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Linvilla Orchard’s Farm Manager Norm Schultz, who donates produce, and t-shirts for volunteers with money donated by William Holder Realtors and printing donated by Palm Printing just to name a few. This year the event is planned for Saturday, November 18th - the weekend before Thanksgiving and is held in “Fellowship Hall at Cedar Creek Catering” (at W. State & Lemon).

2021, had several members of her family live here, prompting Anne to make the same decision. “I’ve had four people in my family that lived here: my mother, aunts, and an uncle,” Anne said. “I saw the care and everything that went on here for years before I moved in, so it was a no brainer for me to continue with the next generation.”

Thanksgiving is a special time to appreciate all that there is to be grateful for, especially at Riddle Village. “I’m thankful for the community because it’s just so friendly and wonderful,” Anne said. “From employees to administration, everything about it is welcoming. It is home, and it’s a great place to be.”

Gloria Tursi, Assistant Director of Dining, and a Riddle Village Employee for 25 years, gave us more insight into what goes into making Thanksgiving such a memorable day for everyone here. “Holidays are very festive in dining,” Gloria said. “The staff is very happy and enjoys the holiday just as much as the residents. The kitchen is jumping, a special menu is prepared, the baker makes holiday cookies, and decorations and candies pertaining to the specific holiday are on display. Residents often bring down baked goods for the staff.”

The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows).
