McLean and Great Falls are a melting pot of lifelong locals and post-graduate transplants, all of whom contribute to the area’s blossoming community and hometown feel. Those who moved to the area, or simply switched neighborhoods, each play a role in the towns’ character and personality — and nothing speaks to character and personality like a person’s home. The architecture of Northern Virginia gives homage to its colonial roots, but has since stepped into the future with nods to modernism and new age design. Those looking to remodel or custom build homes have so much of the area’s history and landscape to draw on for inspiration, but it can be hard to marry every idea into a single vision. For those seeking guidance in bringing their ideas to life, James McDonald and his team are a trusted local resource, known for helping homeowners thoughtfully blend tradition with innovation. James McDonald has been designing houses in the Great Falls area, and along the entire Eastern Seaboard, for nearly two decades. He knew architecture was his passion at a very young age. From digging around construction sites as a child, to exploring iconic buildings such as the Pantheon while living in Europe in his teens, McDonald had a one-track mind; and after completing his architectural degree, he moved to Northern Virginia ready to make an impact. Now James McDonald’s job is, as he says, “to bring client’s dreams to life.” Within their first meeting, McDonald and his team — which, as a true family man, includes his wife and daughter — are able to sketch out around 80% of what a client’s custom build or remodel
will look like. Compiling reference photos, getting a sense for their lifestyle needs, accommodating for lot size and building budget — McDonald tailors it specifically to what his clients want and need. “Our signature style is our flexibility in style,” he says. One thing that sets James apart is his willingness to be candid with his clients during this initial process. He is open about what aspects of a custom build will hold higher value in the housing market — things like indoor-outdoor living and large family gathering spaces — should the owners decide to move or sell in the future. He also is sure to take everyone’s input, knowing that each family member in a home will have their own desires and priorities — all of which he works to include in a final design. “Building a home is very emotional,” says McDonald, knowing that he's not just installing doors and erecting walls. But with so much to consider when building a home, what should you prioritize? Well, whether it’s a 600 square foot addition or 6,000 square foot custom build, McDonald knows it’s all about balance. He considers his client’s lifestyle — their religious needs, any multi-generational components, or in-home entertainment aspirations — all while working within the constraints of the land they're building on. James will even tour potential lots with clients to determine feasibility. “When we’re working on a new home, it’s not just style, it’s spatial issues, relationships between rooms, it’s how [a client] lives,” McDonald said. For those looking to build in the area, McDonald’s main warning is to be cautious of scope creep — falling victim to the ‘candy shop’ of potential luxury add ons. “What's very important through the process is having a real clear communication on budget and house size. That should not be a secret when talking to any architect or builder for the homeowners,” McDonald says. This is not to say James wants to take the fun out of your custom build — having designed a few indoor pools and five-car garages — but he is mindful of keeping his clients focused. Once again, candor and feasibility are key.
“I get enthused by the different clients and the different things they bring to the table that they want out of their homes,” McDonald says. “Every home of ours may have some JMA Architects design style behind it, but they're all very unique homes.” When building a custom home, there are a million large and small things to consider. But with James McDonald, the bottom line is about protecting your investment and designing the home that is exactly right for you.

In an era defined by convenience and mass production, it's rare to find a business that moves at the pace of thoughtfulness. But on a quiet stretch of King Street in Old Town Alexandria, one such business continues a legacy that began over a century ago. Michelbach’s, a furniture store that was once a cornerstone of Alexandria’s commercial life, has returned to its roots — this time under the stewardship of husband-and-wife team Justin and MaryKim Bernhardt. Locals may remember the space by its more recent name, Creative Classics, but in reclaiming the Michelbach name, the couple has honored a family tradition dating back to 1904. “We didn’t even think twice,” MaryKim shares with a smile, recalling the moment they heard the original store was for sale. “This is in Justin’s blood. It just felt right.” For Justin, it’s more than a name, it’s a lineage. His great-great-great grandfather, Frank Michelbach, opened the original store in the same location, and archival ads from the 1920s reflect values that still resonate: “The Spirit of Fair Dealing… Dependable Merchandise… Companionable Furniture.” These weren’t catchphrases, but guiding principles for how a small business could serve a community. In today’s fast-moving retail landscape, that sense of purpose feels quietly radical. It’s not just about offering well-made pieces — it’s about helping people shape a home that reflects their values and way of life. CONTINUED >

The restored 10,000-square-foot showroom blends Old Town’s historic charm with a more contemporary feel. Inside, the focus is on Americanmade, custom-order furniture, chosen for its craftsmanship and longevity. The store’s free design center offers a relaxed, low-pressure environment where visitors can explore different styles, materials, and layouts that suit everything from urban condos to larger homes throughout Northern Virginia. “If a customer has a knack for designing, they can pick their own fabric, their own wood species, their own leather, their own rugs to match,” MaryKim says. The couple has infused the space with their signature warmth and vision, blending clean, modern aesthetics with timeless comfort. “We wanted people to walk in and feel at home, but also feel like they were discovering something truly special,” says Michael. And that’s exactly what their customers experience: an intimate, concierge-style service that transforms furniture shopping into an act of storytelling. The couple’s commitment to small-scale craftsmanship and sustainability sets Michelbach’s apart. Many of their makers are based in the U.S., and the emphasis is on enduring quality — hardwoods, hand-applied finishes, and furniture that grows more beautiful with time. Rather than chasing trends, they’ve built a business model rooted in long-term relationships — both
with clients and with the artisans whose work fills the showroom. Many of their pieces are sourced from local artisans who share their commitment to quality and sustainability; and whom the couple have been able to build lifelong relationships with that ensure the continuation of well-built goods. “We do the research for our customers and hand select [designers] that make quality furniture and stand behind their product,” Justin says. It’s about offering thoughtful, lasting pieces that complement individual homes and reflect the distinct character of those who live in them. “We always start with the customer,” the couple emphasizes. “Their lifestyle, their space, their needs — we listen first.” While Michelbach’s sits in Old Town Alexandria, its story reaches well beyond the neighborhood. For families in McLean, Great Falls, and surrounding communities, it's a reminder of the kind of business that still thrives on craftsmanship, relationships, and reputation — not mass production or rapid turnover. In many ways, Michelbach’s is less about furniture and more about what it means to carry forward a family legacy in a modern world. At a time when retail can often feel impersonal, it’s a rare example of how a small business can remain both deeply rooted and forward-thinking. And that, in itself, is worth celebrating.

UNDERSTANDING
THE MARKET INSIGHT FROM A LOCAL EXPERT
20
H OM E TOWN H E R O | REA L E STAT E
Margenau Real Estate Property
No zip code is immune to the ups and downs of the housing market — even the most sought after neighborhoods like McLean and Great Falls experience shifts that impact buyers and sellers alike. While online research can offer a starting point, truly understanding when and how to act in today’s real estate landscape often requires insight from those who live and breathe the market every day. One powerful way to gain that perspective? Listening to trusted local experts who bring both experience and a deep understanding of the community. Casey Margenau is one of those voices. A Northern Virginia native who grew up in Oakton, raised his family in McLean, and has since returned to Oakton, Margenau brings decades of real world perspective to a housing market that has seen its share of highs and lows. He bought his first home in 1989 — just before a market downturn — and built his career through the early ’90s recession, the housing crash of 2008, and the chaotic seller’s market of the pandemic era. Over the years, Northern Virginia’s market has evolved dramatically. In the early 2000s, easy access to credit and rapid appreciation created a buying frenzy that eventually contributed to the crash. After 2008, recovery was slow but steady, with buyers becoming more cautious and data-driven. The pandemic brought another surge followed by today’s more complex environment: low inventory, high buyer expectations, and fluctuating rates. Yet through all the changes, Casey was able to anticipate market shifts and keep his clients confident in their choices. He’s invested time, effort and energy into real estate, and with over 35 years in sales under his belt, he has a wealth of experience he is ready to share with clients.
“I know how a house is built, I know what products are being used in them. I’ve studied,” Margenau says. His knowledge runs deeper than the market and that’s why clients seek him out. But it’s not just his success stories — it’s his character and what he brings to the community. Margenau is woven into the fabric of his neighborhood. Amidst selling homes that have been passed down through generations and befriending fellow ‘car guys’ at local dealerships, Margenau has always valued his role as a father. From coaching his daughter’s sports team to serving as the den leader for his son’s Cub Scout troop, he made time for family — something he encourages his clients to prioritize as well. He leads his company with empathy, understanding that selling or buying a home, especially for the first time, is about more than just a transaction. In a market that can feel overwhelming and uncertain, his approach helps clients feel seen, heard, and supported. It’s this commitment to people, not just properties, that has built lasting trust and positioned his team to serve not only today’s buyers and sellers, but generations to come. In communities where real estate often carries personal history, having a trusted advisor — someone who understands not just the numbers, but the people and rhythms of the area — can change the experience entirely. “I do this because I like it and I enjoy it. I’m in this business to help people make the right decisions,” Margenau says, whether that means downsizing or finding the right place to accommodate a new family lifestyle. Now, with over $3 billion in real estate sold, Casey is using his expertise to mentor the next generation, both on his team and in the housing market. He guides people with a deep understanding of the luxury and privacy that makes Northern Virginia such a destination, while being mindful of the emotion that comes with saying goodbye to a familiar home. He also teaches clients simple tricks, like avoiding painting a house all white for a staging so it doesn’t lose character, and telling them to sell now while the market is stable. So what should buyers and sellers expect right now? A more strategic landscape. Inventory remains tight, but demand hasn’t disappeared — particularly in sought-after areas like Great Falls and McLean. CONTINUED >

Sellers must be thoughtful with pricing and presentation, while buyers are entering the market more cautious, informed, and selective. In this environment, having a trusted advisor by your side is more important than ever. Whether you're preparing to say goodbye to a long-time home or searching for the right place to begin a new chapter, guidance from someone who understands both the local market and the emotional complexity of these decisions can make all the difference. With decades of experience navigating market highs and lows, Casey Margenau offers steady, informed support — focused not on transactions, but on relationships. In a time when even seasoned homeowners can feel uncertain, local experts like Margenau bring reassurance and clarity. “The success is not attributed to me,” Margenau says. “It’s attributed to how I treated people, and it’s attributed to them trusting me.” That trust isn’t earned through sales volume — it’s built through consistency, care, and the ability to meet people where they are, no matter what stage of the journey they’re in

A Lime Mint Rose Mojito adds a floral twist to the classic mojito, creating a refreshing and elegant cocktail. Here’s a recipe that balances the traditional lime and mint with the delicate aroma of rose.
Ingredients: • 2 oz Gin (or Vodka) • 1.5 oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice • 1 oz Pear Liqueur (or Pear Juice) • 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice • 1 sprig of Rosemary • Sparkling water • Garnish: Rosemary sprig, grapefruit slice, pear slice Instructions: Place the rosemary sprig in a cocktail shaker. Lightly muddle the rosemary to release its oils. Add the gin (or vodka), grapefruit juice, pear liqueur and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice. Shake well until thoroughly chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass filled with ice. Top with sparkling water or Prosecco. Garnish with a rosemary sprig, a grapefruit slice, and a pear slice.
Ingredients: • 1 bottle wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio or Garnacha) • ½ cup brandy or rum • ½ cup elderflower liqueur • 1 cup sparkling water • 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced • ½ cup fresh raspberries • ½ cup fresh blueberries • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves • 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced (optional) • 1 lime, thinly sliced Instructions: In a large pitcher, combine the white wine, brandy (or rum), and elderflower liqueur. Stir gently to mix.Add the sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mint leaves, rosemary sprigs, and cucumber slices to the pitcher. Gently muddle the berries and herbs slightly to release their flavors. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. Just before serving, add the sliced lime and sparkling water or club soda. Stir gently. Serve the sangria over ice, ensuring each glass gets a mix of fruit and herbs.
Ingredients: • 10 fresh mint leaves • 1 lime, cut into wedges • 2 tablespoons white sugar (or simple syrup, to taste) • 2 ounces white rum • 1 ounce rose water (adjust to taste, as it can be potent) • Club soda or sparkling water • Garnish: Mint sprigs, lime wedges, edible rose petals (optional) Instructions: Muddle: Place the mint leaves and lime wedges in a glass. Add sugar. Use a muddler to gently crush the mint and lime. Pour the white rum and rose water into the glass. Stir well. Fill the glass with ice. Top with club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently. Garnish with a mint sprig, a lime wedge, and, if desired, edible rose petals. JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / M C L E A N

SUMMER GRILL ARTICLE BY KATIE BOBROW
RECIPES
THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER
The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!
DIRECTIONS: 1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag 2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge. 3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour. 4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other. 5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear. 6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting). 7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely. *Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

BOOKS TO TAKE YOU AWAY I ASKED MY EXPAT AND TRAVEL-SAVVY FRIENDS TO RECOMMEND BOOKS TO TAKE ME FAR AWAY. HERE YOU GO!
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
The Corfu Trilogy BY GERALD DURRELL
BY TONY HORWITZ
Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise - My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell - are available in a single edition for the first time in The Corfu Trilogy. Just before the Second World War the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu, where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for animals: toads and tortoises, bats and butterflies, scorpions and octopuses. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family.

Cutting for Stone
Blue Latitudes
BY ABRAHAM VERGHESE
The Island of Missing Trees BY ELIF SHAFAK
It is 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided land, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek and Christian, and Defne, who is Turkish and Muslim, can meet, in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic, chili peppers and wild herbs. This is where one can find the best food in town, the best music, the best wine. But there is something else to the place: it makes one forget, even if for just a few hours, the world outside and its immoderate sorrows.
