Experience Lone Star-true country life close to home via a tempting Texas vineyard, plentiful wines from locally grown grapes as well as from the Texas High Plains, horses, donkeys, split-rail fences and a rustic barn for popular, live music events. Now throw in food trucks, open fires and s’mores, and it's a perfect outing. "We host ticketed tribute or cover band events on weekends and family-friendly ‘Sip & Shops’ with Texas wine and local vendors once a month," says BarnHill co-owner Steven Neuner. Given that Texas helped popularize country music throughout the world with the state's rich and varied traditions stemming from the Outlaw country movement of the 1960s and 1970s, it's particularly befitting to enjoy this bluesy, rocking type of music outside, under the stars.

Corey Neuner, co-owner and Steven's spouse, adds, "We're also open on select Saturdays noon to 4 p.m. for tastings of wine flights." After co-owners Dean and Joy Dickschat started BarnHill in 2016, it became a premier date night destination on Fridays and Saturdays. The Dickschats say they loved their working farm being referenced as: 'So much country so close to home.' They're now in the process of selling their ownership percentages to the Neuners. Full property ownership is expected to conclude before this year's end. Texas has at least 2,500 varietals. A wine varietal is a wine made with one variety of grapes, such as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the United States, a wine qualifies as a varietal if the single grape variety makes up at least 75 percent of the wine. "We appreciate not only the beauty of the fruit and vines, but the effect Mother Nature has on them. We're essentially grape farmers, and we enjoy sharing that with visitors in our special way," says Dean. He says they partner with some of the best Texas winemakers who have vast knowledge and experience in wine making. He adds that they always seek out new flavors in hopes of discovering which Texas wine suits various guests' tastes. Examples of the BarnHill wines include a full-bodied red, such as Sweet Sunsets; a medium-bodied, black-fruit driven Montepulciano; an earth mixed with plum and black cherry Malbec; the red plum and smoky thyme, allspice and cracked pepper tasting Alicante Bouschet; a dry white Roussanne; and a Sweet Moscato Blend. Specialty wines include ruby red Cabernet infused with dark chocolate, as well as Peach Tree Lane made from Moscato grapes with a hint of peach. CONTINUED >

Dean says their Tempranillo has significant red fruit flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberry, along with a hint of fig and notes of tobacco, leather, cedar and spice due to being aged in oak barrels. “This is a Texas standard,” he adds. A new BarnHill fan favorite is Sweet Hazel wine, named in memory of the farm’s miniature donkey, Hazel, who passed on last fall. At press time, team members were visiting rescues in search of another miniature donkey to be a companion to Daisy. Live events at the vineyard always start off with playing the National Anthem. Those 16 and older are allowed on-site, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times and have purchased a ticket. Any children under the age of 16 will not be permitted to enter the event. Corey says friendly dogs on leashes and birthday cakes are allowed, too. “The future is bright at BarnHill, the road is full of joy, and the great Texas wine is flowing,” assures Joy. In addition to scheduled events, BarnHill is available for private and corporate rentals on Sundays.

They will perform from the outside stage if weather allows, but the events go on even if the band must move inside. Attendees may bring non-alcoholic beverages and light snacks, such as cheese or fruit trays, but no meals or outside alcohol. BarnHill is a 100% nonsmoking, nonvaping property. For 30 years, McKinney Christian Academy (MCA) has equipped students with a strong spiritual foundation and prepared them academically for college and beyond. MCA offers a comprehensive, affordable, high-quality Christian education that supporters indicate meets the needs of students and parents alike. MCA is a nondenominational Covenant school. “The story of MCA is a story of faith steps and seeing the Lord work through obedient local leaders with a passion and calling for Christian education,” says Heath Nivens, head of the school. “From where we started to today, is just truly amazing.”

MCA opened in 1992 with 13 students in kindergarten and first grade from local families who had a heart and desire for their children to have a Christian education. The school originally opened at an old bank building on Grave Street in downtown McKinney. Every year, a new grade level was added, with the first graduating class of 13 students in 2003. Today, MCA has 670 Pre-Kindergarten through 12th-grade students from all over Collin County and sits on a 60-acre campus in McKinney with room to grow and expand. As a college preparatory school, MCA challenges every student to reach their full potential and impact the next generation for Christ. Heath says the focus is to help students be prepared academically and spiritually for a lifelong journey of faith. MCA offers an advanced curriculum with Advanced Placement (AP) and dual-credit courses. Education and growth opportunities are not limited to the classroom. Because of its smaller size, MCA students have an opportunity to be involved in extracurricular clubs, fine arts and athletics from lower school through high school. Mentoring relationships with younger students provide a unique level of education and perspective. Extracurricular activities are used as an extension of the classroom for character building, Heath adds. MCA’s teaching staff is comprised of 54 teachers certified in their area of instruction with 43% holding advanced degrees. Heath says every teacher is committed to being a lifelong learner and wanting to grow as a professional. “They have a distinct purpose and mission each day to be dedicated to not just their students, but their students’ families as well.” MCA’s athletics department, fine arts community and co-curricular clubs are staffed with qualified coaches and instructors who are perceived as highly effective while pursuing excellence in their specialty field. MCA offers football, volleyball, baseball,

basketball, cheer, cross country, swimming, golf, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. Additional opportunities include local and global mission trips, art, band, choir, theatre, debate, journalism, robotics, broadcasting, student government, TAPPS academic competitions, debate, Leadership Academy and various clubs. Heath believes MCA’s 30-year history sets the school apart from other schools. He says the school is young enough to not be rooted in a “we have always done it this way approach” but traditions are strong. And, MCA maintains a history of excellence in academics, with students advancing to colleges and universities across Texas and throughout the country. The second element that sets MCA apart is the strong sense of community. “Every family is connected and the school views that relationship as a partnership,” Heath explains. MCA’s foundation is set on biblical truth. Heath says, “Across campus, God’s word is to be opened and examined, no matter the classroom subject. God’s word is the foundation for the students. The school partners with families and local churches to make sure students are getting the best education possible. Levi says the local real estate market is still active and maintaining steam, citing the housing appreciation rate was up 9.8% within Collin County in January 2023 to January 2022 comparison. “Sellers are still getting multiple offers on homes that are reasonably priced. Cash and the highest prices still get most of the attention in offers, however, some are equally interested in selling to a military veteran or having their home go to a good family,” he states.

We found these videos are truly appreciated by those who get emotionally attached to their houses, because they save them as remembrance pieces,” he adds. Once housing closures occur, Levi says they check with clients at 30-, 60- and 90-day intervals. Celebrating 25 Years Of Volunteerism Volunteer McKinney Connects People To Their Passions Through Volunteerism While Supporting Collin County Nonprofits

Twenty-five years ago, several McKinney community leaders saw a great need for a centralized hub for community members to find local volunteer opportunities and for service organizations to find volunteers. From this need, Volunteer McKinney was born. This is the organization’s 25th year of service to the nonprofit sector. An anniversary gala will be held on Sept. 15 to help commemorate the organization’s 25 years of service. “The gala will be a celebration dinner where we will share our history and vision moving forward,” says Christine Ortega, Volunteer McKinney executive director. “We partner with over 200 nonprofit organizations in Collin County and have lots to celebrate!”

Since 1998, Volunteer McKinney has connected volunteers to Collin County nonprofit organizations, and has provided support services to these organizations through training and collaboration. Collin County is a thriving community served by strong nonprofits and servants’ hearts. Working with Volunteer McKinney is simple. Everything takes place on the group’s volunteer portal located on the organization’s website. Users can browse opportunities without an account, but will need to register and create a profile to respond to an opportunity. Users may “Become a Fan” of any agency to get updates on their needs. Opportunities are added at an ongoing pace. Each agency’s managers have their group’s own process for

accepting volunteers to make sure it’s a good fit for them. There are currently more than 11,000 volunteer users in the portal. Volunteer McKinney participates in three events annually. Each year, community residents enjoy the opportunity to recognize outstanding volunteers at the Spirit of Volunteerism Awards dinner. This year’s dinner will be held on April 20. Secondly, Volunteer McKinney representatives participate in North Texas Giving Day, an online communitywide giving event to help raise awareness of nonprofits in the area. On the fourth Saturday of October, Volunteer McKinney coordinates Make a Difference Day in McKinney at various projects with nonprofit organizations across the city. This event has one purpose -- to improve the lives of others. The nonprofit’s 25th Anniversary Gala this fall will be held from 6-10 p.m. at Frisco Hall at 5353 Independence Parkway, Suite 1, in Frisco. Volunteer McKinney leaders are seeking sponsorships at a variety of levels for the anniversary gala. In-kind, auction and raffle items also are being requested. Individual tickets are $125 and can be purchased on the Volunteer McKinney website. Volunteer McKinney is supported by 13 board of directors, all of whom contribute a variety of personal talents and experiences to the group.

With 17-plus years in the business, North Texas Palms & Pottery has grown to be a premier retail and wholesale garden center in North Texas. While specializing in cold hardy palms, North Texas Palms & Pottery also provides sod, drought-tolerant plants, ornamental and shade trees, perennials and annuals, shrubs, firewood, pottery and Christmas yard art. Owner Leo Yruegas started selling his palm trees from his own greenhouse at a McKinney Trade Days booth in 2004. He says his palms would sell out every week, and in 2006 he rented a 2-acre permanent spot on the McKinney Trade Days property. “I realized I had a unique niche that couldn’t be found anywhere else,” says Leo Yruegas, North Texas Palms & Pottery owner. “It just grew from there.” Leo says North Texas Palms & Pottery has been successful in bringing in plant material not seen at places such as Home Depot, Lowes or other garden centers. He says he works diligently to carry hardto-find plants and more drought-tolerant plants. Over the years, he says North Texas Palms & Pottery became the region’s experts in cold hardy palms. They carry multiple species of palms, including California Fan, Florida Sabal, Mediterranean/European Fan, Pindo, Texas Sabal, and Windmill. In July 2021, the McKinney Trade Days property was sold, forcing Leo to find a new home for his business. North Texas Palms & Pottery now sits on an 8-acre lot on FM 1461 that was previously a horse farm. He says the new location has allowed the group to expand the business where they previously were limited in size.

Leo recently built a 90 feet wide by 96 feet long greenhouse, giving him a large space to start growing his own perennials. He says the first harvest is expected to be in late fall. “New shade houses for growing landscape plants will allow us to market the business more to the wholesale industry,” he says, sharing that North Texas Palms & Pottery currently sells bermuda sod to local contractors but with additional space hopes to start carrying other varieties. Leo loves providing one-on-one communication with customers. He says he believes this is why he has so many repeat customers and is expanding his contractor business. Spring is the time to start cleaning out flower beds, trimming plants, and planting in color. It is also a great time to fertilize trees and shrubs. North Texas Palms & Pottery carries Nelson Plant Food fertilizers and lawn care products, as well as its own custom blend fertilizer specifically for palms formulated by Nelson Plant Food.

PALM TREE CARE TIPS: Fertilize Palms four times a year. Twice in spring, five weeks apart. Once in the summer and once in the fall. New palm installs should be watered three to four times per week depending on season and rainfall amounts. Three minutes of hand watering with the hose on medium to high blast. Sprinkler heads, lawn irrigation, and water meters are not sufficient and are not recommended for trees and palms. Summer months may require some additional watering during the first year. The lower fronds of palm trees will always have some browning and drooping. This is normal and should be cut off at that point. When palms are stressed there will be browning or wilting on newer fronds. Winter care should include applying a systemic fungicide late in the fall, two applications 14 days apart. Apply the fungicide directly to the crown or center of the palm. Another two-part application in March after the last freeze is also recommended.
