Home: So much contained in that little four letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder stated: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about the concept of homes, we wanted to highlight what makes them special to our readers. We feel lucky in that we get to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this region and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings together people in this community. As you flip through the pages of this edition, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you. Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that's valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

Local Trusted Franchise Expert

Roxanne Rapske, Franchise Consultant

Roxanne Rapske Matches Potential Business Owners To Appropriate Franchise ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS

I NSP IR E D BY | LOCA L SERVI CE S

In 2022, International Franchise Association representatives estimated that 792,014 franchise establishments were responsible for almost 8.5 million jobs and $788 billion in output. Roxanne Rapske, a local franchise specialist at FranNet, combines her 20 years of experience in Corporate America and the knowledge of starting a business of her own, to help individuals find the right business that will maximize the odds for success. Here, she shares what it’s like. WHAT HAS YOUR CAREER PATH BEEN TO BECOME A FRANCHISE EXPERT? I spent 20 years as a mortgage banker. When the recession hit in 2007, I lost my income overnight, and I found myself wondering what was next. I threw myself into research and at the end of 2007, I became an independent franchise consultant. In 2013, I joined FranNet as a franchise specialist. I believe having walked a mile in my clients’ shoes, I’m uniquely positioned to help others navigate the same type of career transition and outcome. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS A FRANCHISE EXPERT? I’m a matchmaker. I have a portfolio of approximately 200 vetted franchises. I get to know my clients via an entrepreneur profile and by helping them build a business model. Once I understand their skill sets, interests, experience, finances and goals, I then match them to franchises I feel are a good fit on both sides. Franchises are not purchased; they are awarded. A franchise company will be just as selective on its end. We usually start with four different franchises, and 10 to 15 hours per week we’ll engage and learn more about each franchise. I make sure the client is getting all their questions answered. From these discussions, we use a process of elimination. I coach my clients to

gather enough information to be able to make informed decisions. It’s a very in-depth process that typically takes 30 to 90 days. This needs to be a head-heart-and-gut decision, not one based on pure emotion. WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE IN FRANCHISING? There are three main types of franchises. First, you have brick and mortar. These may be things like retail, restaurants, hotels or car service shops. Investments range from approximately $300,000 to over $1 million all in. Next, you have a service-based franchise, such as a roofing or housecleaning company. Most of these are not brick-and-mortar. Investments tend to be much less, ranging from approximately $100,000 to $300,000. Lastly, there are business-to-business franchises, such as a signage or a direct mail company. Many of these franchises start as home-based businesses, allowing for a smaller initial investment. WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS AND HOW HAS FRANCHISING EVOLVED OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS? I have a diverse group of clients. I work with transitioning or laid-off executives, the underemployed and those unhappy with their corporate environment. I’m seeing more teachers who are looking for a change. I specialize in helping military veterans looking to transition from the service to being their own boss. Many clients come to me seeking an exit strategy from their previous career paths or looking to diversify their income. I’m working with more people nearing retirement who want to have something they can do after they retire from their current careers. I’m seeing spouses who gave up their careers who are looking for something to do or to bring in some extra money. Whether it’s an existing business owner, investor or someone

currently employed, I can help them find a franchising solution. I’ve seen the franchising industry evolve, especially since the pandemic. I’m working with more women and seeing a wider range of ages. Multigenerational families are becoming more popular. Franchising is a perfect way to leave a legacy. WHAT INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT FOR READERS THINKING ABOUT FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITIES? Franchising is often the most misunderstood and overlooked type of entrepreneurship. best funding options. There’s no cost to clients for my services. The franchises pay me to help them find the right fit for their concept. Franchise success is built upon utilizing a proven business model to give clients the best chance to succeed as business owners. Christina Burress, MBA Owner/ Principal Designer

Transforming Space Ideas Into Reality Burress Design Group Focuses On Designing Unique Places That Embody Personal Vision And Lifestyles ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS Christina Burress says she fell in love with interior design work when building her own home years ago. In 2021, she brought that passion to life with the opening of Burress Design Group, a McKinney-based design firm at 6617 Virginia Parkway, Suite A. “I enjoyed the process so much,” says Christina Burress, lead interior designer and founder of Burress Design Group. “It wasn’t until our friends lauded over the design of our home, encouraging me to get into the design business, did I consider pouring my heart and soul into other people’s homes. Four years later, that’s exactly what I did!”

24

H OU SE CA LL | HOM E + DE S I GN

Burress Design Group is a full-scale interior design firm, offering a wide range of design services for residential and commercial clients, including procurement of lighting, furnishings, local art, textiles, plumbing, hardware, appliances, flooring, tile and countertops. The team also works with clients on selecting paint colors, wall and window coverings, custom cabinetry and exterior finishes. The design firm's professionals serve all of the DFW Metroplex, as well as other areas of Texas. Burress Design Group features a diverse portfolio of clients with experience designing for law firms, multipurpose venues, medical offices and different sizes of residential properties.

"You don't have to break the bank to design a space that looks great,” says Christina Burress, founder, Burress Design Group. “A little bit of creativity goes a long way!” “We have a good understanding of the construction process and work well with any team of contractors, architects and other professionals to ensure the final design is of the highest quality,” says Christina. “We can also source products within any budget and still create a beautiful retreat for our clients.” She says Burress Design Group designers have a strong understanding of design principles, such as balance, proportion and scale, and know how to use color, texture, and lighting to create a specific mood or feeling in a space. "Our firm's design team has an exceptional eye for detail and incorporates clients' personalities and lifestyles into our designs. We're known for our ability to create sophisticated spaces that are both functional and beautiful," she adds. “We’re not your cookie-cutter design firm that lives by hard and fast rules of design,” says Christina. “Yes, form, function and proportion are very important when designing a space, but it’s when we get creative that the real magic happens!” The process is simple. A team member will set up a phone consultation to discuss the scope of the project followed by

an in-person initial consultation to see the space and begin brainstorming ideas. Next comes pulling the design elements together onto a design board where the client can see the design and the designer can discuss how to move forward. Once the design is approved, design products are ordered and if construction is part of the design scope, demo will begin. Lastly, Burress Design Group staffers install and style the new products in a home or office, resulting in a fresh, new space. One of the hallmarks of Christina’s design aesthetic is her ability to incorporate a mix of traditional and modern elements into her spaces giving them a sense of authenticity and timelessness. Clients indicate she has a talent for layering textures, patterns and colors to create warmth and depth in her designs. Christina says she enjoys mixing vintage and antique pieces with contemporary design elements to create a cohesive look. "Designing does not have to be stressful," Christina reminds, adding that she loves to give fun and easy design tips to her clients. CONTINUED >

Revitalize Living Or Working Space: Design Tips to Try LIGHTING Kelvin temperatures, the color temperature of a light source, can affect how the colors of the walls appear to the human eye. A light source with a low color temperature (2000K-3000K) will emit a warm, yellow-orange light that can make colors appear more muted and warm. A light source with a medium color temperature (3500K-4500K) will emit a neutral white light, making colors appear more true to life. A light source with a high color temperature (5000K-6500K) will emit a cool, blue-white light, making colors appear more vibrant and cool. Christina recommends using the latter color temperatures in offices and retail spaces, where a bright and energizing atmosphere is desired. In homes, she recommends using 3500-5000 Kelvin LED bulbs. This will brighten the space and increase resale value.

SHOWER NICHE A pony wall is a perfect place to put a niche because the wall hides anything behind it until walking into the shower. Toiletries would no longer be an eyesore taking away from beautifully designed bathroom. This still works even if there is a bench along the half wall. The niche would be framed out directly above the bench. Make sure the niche is tall enough to hold those 33-ounce shampoo bottles. Christina recommends 14 inches tall by 30 inches wide for a single niche when space allows. If an area does not allow for a niche that length, add a shelf three-fourths of the way up for smaller items in a traditional-sized shower niche; this gives more use and function. Because traditional niches are taller than they are wide, there is a lot of wasted vertical space.

into flip drawers with trays under all the sinks. This comes in handy for storing toothbrushes and toothpaste or those messy kitchen sponges. These drawers can easily be wiped down because the tray is plastic or metal.

PAINT The sheen level of paint can affect its durability, ease of cleaning and overall appearance. A flat finish is often used on ceilings, an eggshell finish is used on walls, while a semi/ high-gloss finish is more commonly used on trim and cabinets. Christina encourages clients with smooth walls to step outside their comfort zone and paint walls satin, ceilings in semi/high gloss and trim in semi-gloss. This can make a house feel so much brighter.

AREA RUGS When it comes to selecting the right size area rug for a bedroom, living room, or dining room, there are a few key factors to consider. The size of the room, the layout of the furniture, and the overall design of the space will all play a role in determining the best rug size. Most people choose too small of an area rug for their space making the room feel smaller than it actually is. There are exceptions but typically place at minimum an 8x10 area rug under a king-size bed with a 9x12 as an even better option if space allows. For queen-size beds, a 6x9 or an 8x10 would work nicely, and for a twin, a 5x8 or 6x9. These measurements can vary based on furniture, room size, and individual client needs. Many designers insist on installing a round rug under a round table because those are the rules. Christina recommends playing with shapes to spice up a space. Try sourcing a square rug under a round dining table. The chairs should all fit on the rug when both are pushed in and scooted back.

CABINETS Those faux drawers under the bathroom and kitchen sink can be used. Convert them

Transfiguring Homes, Building Relationships SLM General Contractors And Roofing Provide Diversity In Service When And Where It Truly Matters

ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS

After a career change in 2014, Sergio Maldonado says he started working as a sales representative for a local roofing company. After seeing a lack of training, leadership and customer service in the industry, Sergio was inspired to start his own business to deliver top-notch, personalized service: SLM General Contractors and Roofing. SLM General Contractors and Roofing is a full-range roofing and construction company offering residential and commercial services to McKinney and surrounding areas. Sergio and his team offer services designed to help clients achieve the space of their dreams. While general maintenance will help preserve a home or a commercial space, major repairs and remodels will improve appearance, function and value. Whether a job is large or small, Sergio says SLM General Contractors and Roofing can upgrade any area.

“The goal is that every client will get exactly what they envision and each client’s needs and wants are considered when executing a project,” he says. SLM General Contractors and Roofing is committed to excellence, he adds. This commitment ensures the highest quality work and service possible. It includes using pristine designs, top-of-the-line materials and providing superior customer service. This helps give clients confidence their project will be completed to their satisfaction. Sergio says each client, home and project are unique. “SLM General Contractors and Roofing can help with every step of a project from design to finish.” An initial consultation will gather information on the scope of the project. Next, a site visit will help gather additional information, including the client’s budget, to CONTINUED >

determine the project’s feasibility and next steps. After the site visit, a timeline will be established and a preconstruction service agreement will be put in place that will contain project details. All clients that enter into a preconstruction services agreement will receive a personalized project cost before committing to any actual construction services. For projects that aren’t as complex and don’t require custom selections, clients don’t need to enter into a preconstruction services agreement, Sergio adds. SLM General Contractors and Roofing team members also have extensive experience in property repairs and rebuilding where a property insurance claim is in place. Sergio and his team know how to navigate insurance and mortgage companies’ documentation and communication processes. “My goal is to be known as an established business and to help local property owners not become victims to ‘fly by night’ contractors that prey on clients after a disaster,” he says. Sergio believes unmatched dedication to quality, communication and customer service is what sets SLM General Contractors and Roofing apart from its competitors. Sergio says they take time to listen to clients’ requests and concerns to make sure they are happy and satisfied with end results. “Our goal is to become friends with our clients,” says Sergio. “We are not looking for the one-time deal. We want to build long-term relationships.” Sergio has worked on a wide range of projects. He says among the most memorable ones, SLM General Contractors and Roofing built the temporary reception desk at the historic Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas while another company was building the new one. At The Four Seasons Hotel in Irving, Sergio and his company were awarded an HVAC contract for a conference room addition, which included hiring a helicopter to take HVAC equipment to the hotel roof. On the residential side, Sergio and his team restored a historic home in Sherman built in 1900, including foundation, plumbing, electrical work, roof, kitchen and other structural modifications. “We take pride in our work. I live in McKinney and want to be known as one of the good contractors in town,” confirms Sergio. “I want to be that person that clients want to say hi to at the grocery store.” 469.844.2300 SLMGC.com

Ferro Steel Doors: A Trusted Source For Custom Improvements

Residential and commercial growth is booming across the Metroplex. Steel doors and windows have become very popular in the design world, and the team at Ferro Steel Doors quickly launched themselves as a premier steel door company in the area. “Our sales have tripled over the last year,” says Tatiana Ruiz, Ferro Steel Doors owner and founder. “We really set ourselves apart from the competition with our expanded product line, improved design and personalized relationships.” Over the last year, she says the Ferro Steel Doors staff incorporated new products and systems into offerings to continue differentiating the company. Interior steel doors have become popular for home offices, wine CONTINUED >

cellars and gun rooms. Ferro Steel Doors’ use of European technology makes frames slimmer, she explains, which is desired on interior doors. Sliding doors are more energy efficient and feature smoother operation. Bi-folding doors are offered with a larger opening. New European systems have improved the finishing process and installations. Technology coming from the Netherlands includes new hinge and pivot systems with flush bolts, Tatiana adds. Big pivot doors are smooth and heavy-duty. She confirms most competitors don't offer this technology. “We take huge pride in the quality of our products,” says Tatiana. “Only the very best materials go into our iron and steel doors.” Ferro Steel Doors' team uses a seven-step finish process, which starts with a polyurethane primer followed by a zinc coat. After the zinc coat, two coats of base are applied before being oven cured and ending with a clear coat. This process contributes to maintenance-free doors. Cleaning only requires a microfiber cloth and water. Every fabrication step is carefully controlled, including precise measurements, custom finishes and hardware specifications. Ferro Steel Doors is known for its high welding quality.

Scrollwork and wrought iron are clean, precise and pure. Tatiana says all products exceed endurance and safety standards. Doors and windows are fully insulated, argon-filled and tempered to ensure maximum energy performance. One of Ferro Steel Doors' most important founding principles revolves around customers' experiences. Tatiana says she works hard to build personal relationships with clients. From job start to finish, she says she ensures questions are answered, concerns are addressed and expectations are met. "Each project is customized for the client." With 15-plus years of experience, Tatiana offers suggestions on what design will look and work the best to meet clients' goals and needs. Then an in-house design team provides drawings of what doors will look like, down to the smallest detail, so there are no surprises. "Ferro Doors is uniquely positioned to fulfill the needs of every type of job, regardless of size or location. We provide the best quality, price, lead time and service," says Tatiana. 469.617.7034 FerroDoors.com

Solution-Driven Plumbing Professionals PURE PLUMBING TEAM OFFERS DEPENDABLE SERVICES, INCLUDING 24/7 EMERGENCIES ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA (BECKY) DERAGON/RD IMAGES

Simplifying plumbing services by providing straightforward, superb solutions to varied situations, spanning routine problems to major issues, is the mission of professionals at Pure Plumbing. "We're known for going the extra mile," beams Alexis Aranda, Pure Plumbing co-owner/CFO. Pure Plumbing first launched in 2013 as a small, family-owned business. Representing the fourth generation of plumbing expertise in his family, the company's co-owner/CEO, Andrew Aranda, says the team's commitment to their communities and doing right by customers prompted them to quickly grow. "Word-of-mouth referrals from happy customers quickly spread our reputation, and our dependable way of doing business kept those customers coming back for all of their plumbing needs," he adds. Together as a married duo, the two Arandas led the Pure Plumbing team's significant progress. Alexis says results by Pure Plumbing now are backed by eight fully-licensed and certified plumbers; four skilled and experienced lead technicians; two veteran supervisors; five plumbing installers; five plumbing apprentices; 16 office staff members; and 24 fully-loaded and professionally-marked service vans. "Tired of a leaking faucet, dripping shower or faulty toilet making life at home frustrating? Facing a serious issue with a sudden, unexpected plumbing emergency that needs to be addressed right away? We want to provide peace of mind to our customers, so don't hesitate to reach out to our Pure Plumbing team," says Danny McGaugh, the company's marketing and networking manager. If water runs through it, Pure Plumbing professionals say they can fix it. "It's not just about showing up, it's about being there and making a positive difference in other people's lives," assures Alexis. "There's nothing more pure than being able to help people when they need it the most," adds Andrew. 469.518.7254 PurePlumbingDFW.com

SHAKESPEARE MCKINNEY 2023

ARTICLE BY ANGI BURNS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBEKAH USSERY

“ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, AND ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN MERELY PLAYERS”

B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE

Transport yourself back in time to late 16th century England under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I. A time when society was much more colorful and elaborate than previous periods. When theatrical festivals offered people an opportunity to escape the hardships of their daily lives and engage with their friends and neighbors in a fun and positive environment. Spectators came from afar to witness displays of comedy, drama and music. The popularity of English actor turned playwright, William Shakespeare, was on the rise. And the English language would never be the same. Shakespeare coined numerous phrases we still use today. Were you aware that "A wild goose chase" first appeared in “Romeo and Juliet”? Did you know “All that glitters is not gold” is from “The Merchant of Venice”? Or that “I will wear my heart upon my sleeve” is from “Othello”? William Shakespeare’s influence on society and language is immeasurable.

The Shakespeare McKinney festival provides residents and businesses with an opportunity to show their hearts of gold (“Henry V”) by supporting the local arts community, including theater, dance, music, and visual arts. This immersive experience is an incredible celebration of culture, creativity and community. Shakespeare McKinney is a nonprofit organization focused on collaborating with various performing and visual artists and arts organizations in a positive, supportive and inclusive environment where they can receive well-deserved recognition and reward. Experience Shakespeare's works and the artistry of days of old. Your worries will melt into thin air (“The Tempest”) as you enter the festival grounds at Adriatica Village in McKinney. Shakespeare’s work comes full circle (“King Lear”) through presentations, adaptations and modernized renditions of his repertoire performed on the Main Stage. The hard work and undeniable talent of local theatre companies, including Out of Line Concepts, Poor Yorick Productions, McKinney’s Young Actors Guild, and The Gorilla Theatre Players, will leave audiences in awe, and their talents will knock you dead as a doornail (“Henry VI”). These lesser-known yet passion-packed companies are sure to impress. There is no need to wait with bated breath (“The Merchant of Venice”) because the Shakespeare McKinney SideStage is jam-packed with classic entertainment. Music, dance and theatre covering multiple eras will delight audiences throughout the duration of the festival. The Peninsula Stage is reserved for student scholarship competitions. Students ranging from 11-18 years of age will display their talents in three categories: Shakespearean Monologue, Classic Scene Work and Improvisation. Knock knock! Who's there? (“Macbeth”) You'll encounter exceptional street performers and

visual artists lining the streets of the festival, sharing their gifts with attendees. The vendors will certainly be eaten out of house and home (“Henry IV, Part II”) by festival goers enjoying the variety of food truck options. Additionally, attendees will be able to peruse the vendor market in search of gifts and keepsakes. The youngest art lovers can spend all day in the gigantic Kids’ Zone. Kiddos ages 3-12 can challenge their skills on Ninja Nation's obstacle course, laugh themselves into stitches (“Twelfth Night”) on the fun inflatables, create original artwork in the craft tent, or fall in love with the animals in the petting zoo after getting into character with one of the fantastic face painters. Last year’s festival goers have not slept one wink (“Cymbeline”) in anticipation of this year’s epic event! Why anyone would choose not to join in on the fun is Greek to me (“Julius Caesar”). Shakespeare McKinney 2023 will take place on March 25 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Adriatica Village located at 6625 Mediterranean Drive in McKinney. For tickets or more information visit ShakespeareMcKinney.org. Shakespeare McKinney is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Community and corporate sponsorship opportunities are available.
