Kindness is a way for people to connect and care for one another. Each year, on Feb. 17, millions of Americans come together to change the world, one random act of kindness at a time. For the third year, First United Bank will be participating in United Acts of Kindness Day, helping permeate kindness throughout the community. First United employees are hoping to spread a light of hope in the world and spark a revolution of kindness. “We invite everyone to join us in our goal to complete 100,000 acts of kindness in one day,” says Denise Steller, vice president and community relationship manager at First United Bank. Random Acts of Kindness Day was initiated in 1995 in Denver, Colorado, by a nonprofit organization called The Random Acts Of Kindness Foundation. The event spread to New Zealand nine years later, in 2004, and the observance of the holiday became more globally widespread.

Kindness is described as the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate. The meaning behind United Acts of Kindness Day is for people in the community to come together to spread joy, hope, and love to friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and even strangers. Kindness has been shown to increase self-esteem, empathy and compassion, as well as to improve moods. There is zero cost to being kind and no act is too big or too small. The beauty of the act is to spread kindness to others. Ways to show kindness can be as simple as opening the door for a stranger, giving someone a hug, calling a friend and telling them to have a nice day, taking out the neighbor’s trash, or paying it forward in the coffee line. It takes only one small act of kindness to change a person’s day for the better. Morgan Freeman said it best, “How do we change the world? One random act of kindness at a time.” Make plans to participate in 2023’s United Acts of Kindness Day. Encourage others and share kindness on Feb. 17 using the hashtag #unitedactsofkindness on social media. 20 Simple Ways To Show Kindness: 1. Smile at a stranger. 2. Send out a kind email or card. 3. Give someone a genuine compliment. 4. Help clean up the meal table, without being asked. 5. Encourage a friend or family member. 6. Let someone into your lane while driving. 7. Say “Thank You” and “Please.” 8. Tell your family and friends “I love you.”

One Heart McKinney McKinney leaders and organization representatives partnered to form One Heart McKinney, a communitywide collaboration that streamlines resources to those in need. One Heart McKinney focuses on delivering support in five core areas to maximize well-being in daily life: food and hygiene; physical, mental, and spiritual health; housing; economic stability; and education. One Heart McKinney’s shared mission is to coordinate entire community resources to respond to and recover from community crises. The reach includes individuals, families, businesses, faith-based organizations and places of worship, nonprofit groups,

schools and academia, all levels of government, and the media. Organizers indicate the goal in executing this mission is to have one clearinghouse through which people in need share their requests, either with One Heart McKinney partners or interacting with One Heart McKinney directly. Then, One Heart McKinney members make referrals to organizations that can help address those needs. “We want the referrals to be both efficient and effective,” says Scott Elliott, One Heart McKinney executive director. “Efficient means creating those referrals as quickly as we can. Effective means we have a good

match between our client’s needs and the programs offered by the receiving organizations.” One Heart McKinney was formed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, thousands of McKinney residents immediately lost their jobs due to the federal shutdown. A group of 40-plus people, which included people from faith congregations, local businesses, the City of McKinney, McKinney ISD, first responders, Mayor and Maylee Fuller, and many nonprofits, met to discuss how to best help those in immediate need. A structure was established to raise $200,000 in three weeks, and to have an online request process where social services organizations could request help to fund the large increase in services needed due to the pandemic. Rick’s Chophouse owner Rick Wells contributed the website O n e H e a r t M c K i n n e y. com, and the organization officially had a name. The group met monthly for a year to facilitate coordination. Group members also decided fundraising and the distribution structure should stay in place for when the next dire emergency arose. A goal was set to raise funding to cover One Heart McKinney’s needs without interrupting existing fundraising efforts to support organizations that provide services to those in need. The organization uses a software platform from UniteUs for network intake and referral management. UniteUS has clients in 49 states and was instrumental in establishing a pilot program for One Heart McKinney in 2022. “Our pilot program involves almost 20 organizations that came alongside us as we’re building the referral capability for One Heart McKinney,” says Scott. “I cannot thank them enough for helping launch a brand-new effort, and work through the inevitable challenges that have arisen rolling out a new software platform.” One Heart McKinney doesn’t provide direct client services, rather the organization links people in need with the organizations within McKinney that already meet those needs. Local organizations

partnering with One Heart McKinney include 3E United, Alliance of Elite Youth Leadership, A Motivating Love, Christ Fellowship, City of McKinney, Community Food Pantry of McKinney, Family Health Center on Virginia, First McKinney Baptist Church, Hope Clinic, Hope Women’s Center, Hugs Cafe, Little Free Pantry, Love Life Foundation, Grace to Change, Lift R&R, Habitat for Humanity of Collin County, TLT, and McKinney ISD. Scott says the goal in 2023 is to partner with 100 organizations. “One great thing about our city is how many folks genuinely care for their friends and neighbors in need. This is demonstrated by the sheer number of nonprofit organizations, ministries of local faith congregations, and businesses that support social service providers,” he adds. “Our task at One Heart McKinney is to marry the capabilities and reach of those groups to capabilities from the city, first responders, McKinney ISD, and the business community, maximizing the well-being of our neighbors in need.” Four ways that community members can get involved with One Heart McKinney:

1. Contact a partner organization listed on the One Heart McKinney website, click “I Need Help,” or call 214.799.1147. 2. Help fund one of the group’s partners. 3. One Heart McKinney organizers volunteered to be a funding aggregator for food pantries within McKinney as part of quarterly community food collections starting in 2023. Start by placing large greenery in a circle around the table. Then layer varying types of greenery on top of the first layer in shorter widths to achieve the final look. To finish, add mini cupcakes, chocolate-dipped Oreos, and themed cookies for a wonderfully inviting table of sweet treats.

// The Tree

To create this easy (and eye-catching!) centerpiece, collect fallen branches from outside and paint them white. Use a thrifted, repurposed white ceramic jar to assemble the branches in for the base. Use a floral foam to stabilize the branches, and place moss at the top of the ja r. This homemade tree can be used for any occasion— it’s sturdy, and just about anything can be hung on it.

// The Ornaments

Create heart ornaments to hang on Valentine’s tree centerpiece. These ornaments could even be used as clue cards for a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt. (Instruct children to find their picture on the tree and hunt for the hidden treasure in the house.) Use recycled shipping boxes to create the heart base and painted them red. Then use a hole punch to create a lace-like edge to complete the look.

USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Strawberries And Cream Cake 10-12 slices strawberry cake layers ingredients • 16 ounces sugar • 6 ounces melted butter • 5 eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • ¼ cup sour cream • 14.5 ounces flour • 4 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 12 ¼ ounces strawberry puree • Red food coloring (optional) directions Beat together sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla until light in color and fluffy. Add remaining ingredients; stir in strawberry puree. Add two drops red food coloring, if desired. Bake in two 9-inch round pans at 300 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Let cool.
