Another "Here Everything's Better" To Open Locally

Prosper ISD Board of Trustees Calls For Bond Referendum

H-E-B representatives announced they will develop a Prosper location at the southeast corner of Frontier Parkway and Dallas North Tollway. Plans also are to open a Melissa location at U.S. 75 and State Highway 121. Groundbreakings are scheduled for early 2024; both stores are expected to open in 2025. H-E-B recently opened in McKinney, Frisco, Plano and Allen. H-E-B is an abbreviation for Howard E. Butt, son of the store's founder, Florence Butt.

Prosper ISD trustees put a $2.807 billion bond package on the Nov. 7 election ballot. School officials state Prosper ISD is one of the fastest-growing Texas districts, enrolling 3,000 new students each year. Since 2002, Prosper ISD grew from 1,000 students and three campuses to nearly 28,000 students and 25 campuses in 2023. Technology improvements are among four items, including schools, athletics and fine arts. Under the athletics tag is a new $94 million stadium.

New Prosper Restaurant Supports Local Nonprofits Through 'First Tuesday' Program Fish City Grill managers commemorated opening the company's newest location in The Gates of Prosper, situated north of U.S. Highway 380, by donating 15% of one day's sales to Prosper-headquartered Tuman Breast Cancer Foundation. The restaurant serves fresh fish and seafood with daily specials. Located at 1150 S. Ben Kim, D.D.S., a South Korean native who moved to Texas at the age of 13, says he’s always dreamed of opening his own dental practice in the local area he calls home. Driven by a desire to contribute to society’s well-being and a passion for using his hands to help others, Dr. Ben says he embarked on a journey in dentistry that led him to establish Niiidental Studio, as a place where patients can experience a friendly and welcoming dental environment. After completing his undergraduate studies in biology at Emory University in Georgia, Dr. Ben attended dental school at Baylor College of Dentistry, now known as Texas A&M College of Dentistry, graduating with a D.D.S. degree in 2019. Following his education, he gained valuable experience working as an associate dentist for four years before making the decision to open his own practice. “For many dentists, the trend is to graduate and study as an associate under someone. They go to work, see patients, get paid and call it a day. Every day is similar,” explains Dr. Ben. “I wanted the freedom and independence to challenge myself.” Dr. Ben’s vision for Niiidental Studio is to eliminate the stigma associated with dental visits and create a comfortable, stress-free experience for patients. He states he wants to change the way dentists are viewed in society and believes that a visit to the dentist should

be a positive and enjoyable experience. By providing a friendly atmosphere and eliminating anxiety and trauma, Dr. Ben says he strives to make every patient feel at ease and confident in his team’s care. “I want to help people and make them smile more. I want my patients to trust me,” says Dr. Ben. “I believe most situations and fear can be easily avoidable with communication and good explanations of the process.” The range of services offered at Niiidental Studio is comprehensive, covering all aspects of general dentistry. From routine check-ups and cleanings to restorative procedures, such as dental fillings, crowns and implants, Dr. Ben says he ensures that each patient’s unique needs are met with the utmost care and professionalism. Additionally, he specializes in cosmetic dentistry, offering treatments such as Invisalign, veneers and teeth whitening to help patients achieve their desired smiles. What some patients believe sets Niiidental Studio apart from other dental practices is Dr. Ben’s ability to create a culturally enriching experience for his patients. Giving Youths Hope, Appreciation For Gusto Alliance Of Elite Youth Leadership Celebrates Decade Of Impact ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATHERINE CHONG Ceretha and Derrick Robinson exude thankfulness about getting to be a hub of empowerment and success for teenagers for the past 10 years through their McKinney-based nonprofit, Alliance of Elite Youth Leadership. Together, the married duo founded this organization because they saw a chance to bridge gaps between beneficial life preparations for others. AEYL’s mission is dedicated to developing a diverse population of youth (ages 12-18) and young adults (ages 19-24), specifically cultivating exposure and opportunity to build positive perspectives of life with an emphasis on higher education, economic and community development. “We incorporate a holistic approach to empower students, and help them unlock their potential,” explains Derrick, who adds that it’s really about showcasing options regarding how to have happy, rewarding individual strategies. Life lessons shared through AEYL range from establishing public speaking skills and earning trust to teaching students how to build valuable relationships for future success. AEYL leaders offer teens and young adults life skills coaching, academic encouragement and support through scholarships, paid-internships, career training, workforce readiness and community service. The Robinsons, who grew up in the small town of Marianna, Arkansas, say their organization began with a “faith walk” from their corporate jobs, going where “the good Lord led them” in helping others who may lack resources for making certain types of decisions. For example, Ceretha says at their high school, they didn’t have prospective college representatives coming in to share options. Rather, they had military representatives to encourage that path, which she took as a route that seemed sure-footed at the time. Ceretha says she was immersed in medical options in the military, but transitioned into finance to use a different set of her skills when they relocated to McKinney, a move that ended up assisting them to establish AEYL as an entrepreneurial nonprofit.

Likewise, Derrick says he didn’t have a consistent role model in high school, so wanted to give teens what he didn’t have so they could properly explore their life options and capitalize on their best interests. “I want young people to be able to dig deeper, and dive into what is their own ‘why’ in life.” Looking back over the past decade of AEYL programs, Derrick reflects on the positive impacts they’ve seen on households and entire families. “Now those teenagers who started with us are 24, 25 or 26 years old, and making their own ways in the world,” he says. “And, during our 10th anniversary year, we realize how appreciative we are about having been able to expand the program to young adults.” From its current AEYL-FLS Resource Center located at 202 W. Louisiana St., Ste. 104, Ceretha says true leadership skills, such as communications, problem-solving and decision-making, are developed and honed. “Our programs offer networking opportunities that allow young adults to also connect with other community leaders, too. We focus on both personal and professional growth to establish a quality of life. We wanted to provide teenagers and young adults with opportunities to see the variety of ways they could be successful and to build on their own perspectives. We give them a chance to identify their own strengths and ideas about what will be their life.” Additional AEYL-FLS Resource Center staff are: Chris Chavez, Kyerra Robinson, Terre Sanford, Jasmine Sanders and AEYL board members. Ceretha says the many AEYL community partners include supportive groups, such as McKinney ISD, Prosper ISD, City of McKinney and McKinney Chamber-McKinney Young Professionals. These groups especially assist in serving as business hosts for AEYL internships. Other helpful initiatives spring up from individuals, as well. Derrick says they and William discovered they had a shared vision of enabling young adults to explore what trade professions would be like for occupations such as carpentry and woodworking. William says this cohort class program is designed to allow participants to personally pursue their interests in the home repair industry, and to ask questions about the business aspects of the profession, too.

HOW TO SUPPORT AEYL EFFORTS While financial donations always are helpful in supporting endeavors, such as AEYL robotics or in purchasing equipment for the new trades exploration class, other opportunities to support the group lie in becoming a tutor, mentor or guest speaker. During November, the Robinsons state that volunteers are needed for their 5th Annual Turkey Drive, during which frozen turkeys are given to 200 to 225 individuals via a carpool line. Additionally, AEYL leaders presently service about 3,000 families, and are seeking gift cards or appropriate games and items to be donated for youths 12 to 18 years old for their holiday gift drive for young people in need. Building Camaraderie And Serving The Community The Marine Corps League, a sanctuary for dedicated Marines and FMF Corpsmen who have proudly worn or currently wear the revered eagle, globe and anchor, is a place where the cherished camaraderie of their service days comes to life once more. Nathan Hanson, a past detachment commandant and paymaster, reflects on the League’s profound impact: “Many members have shared their struggles with mental health, and connecting with fellow veterans who share similar experiences has been a lifeline for them.” In the vast landscape of veteran support, countless heroes are in need but are unsure of how to access resources. As a local veteran organization, the Marine Corps League acts as a vital bridge, connecting veterans with organizations eager to help. Hanson recounts one of their success stories: “We once learned of a Marine and his 3-year-old daughter who were living in a shelter. We were able to intervene, securing them a home, aiding in job placement, fixing their car, and helping them regain their independence.” The Marine Corps League offers a lifeline to veterans when they need it most.

In Collin County, this noble initiative is spearheaded by the LCpl Jacob D. Hayes Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Collin County is renowned for its generosity, particularly when it comes to children. Toys for Tots represents more than just toys; it symbolizes a beacon of hope for families grappling with financial hardships, offering a glimpse of the holiday magic every child deserves. The program collects new, unwrapped toys and ensures they find their way into the hands of children who might otherwise wake up to empty stockings on Christmas morning. Love is in the air at this Monday night cooking school. The novel follows a cast of hapless students as they are instructed in both the kitchen and in life by the school’s owner, Lillian. Lillian is the group’s fairy godmother as she hands out morsels of advice and challenges the students with advanced recipes. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows).
