As summer winds down and school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier routines and schedules. Don’t summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get? However, the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it’s generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. Please take a look at our article about educational resources for our community, including musical instrument lessons, as well as how grandparents can request assistance if they become parents again. We also spotlight a dental team that wants to give everyone a smile, and an authentic grocery store that welcomes all. Since its founding by Melinda and Mark Crenwelge in 1991, Academics Plus has been a pillar in the community, providing instruction to help thousands of students increase their academic performance in the classroom. Over the past 31 years, Academics Plus has grown to be more than an educational resource to the community, it has grown to be a family. Stephanie Talley, Owner and Director at Academics Plus, says that building relationships through working with students and their parents is what she loves the most about teaching. “These families become our family,” says Talley. “It’s so much more than just teaching math or literacy; it’s empowering students to be confident in themselves, and we bond and connect through the process.” Many of Academics Plus’s students are multigenerational, meaning their parents or other family members attended themselves as a child. Sibling enrollment is also the norm, which allows instructors to get to know and develop a relationship with the entire family. Many students who once attended Academics Plus as students have come back to work as office assistants or even instructors themselves. “It all comes back to those family relationships, which is the best part of my job,” says Talley. Academics Plus works with students of all abilities, providing instruction in reading, writing, math, algebra, study skills, and SAT/ACT prep. The goal is for students to have the necessary skills to excel at school, at home, and in the community.

Talley also collaborates with classroom teachers and helps parents advocate for their students. While the industry standard for instructional services is 36 hours, Academics Plus’s average length is 70 hours, because parents see the value in what the center has to offer. While many students start off below grade level, they continue until they are above grade level, and many will stay through 12th grade as they prepare for college. “Through his individualized program at Academics Plus, our son began his seventh-grade year as a whole new student with greater confidence and improved academic skills to be successful in school,” says Cathy Apple. “He tested so well that he was mainstreamed from special services and feels good about himself and his progress. We are delighted with the overall positive effects (academic, emotional, and motivational) that Academics Plus is enabling for our son, and we are so thankful to have such an excellent educational resource here.” Education is constantly changing. The pandemic and digital transformation have changed the landscape of education faster than ever before. Expectations are being lowered, the system is under pressure, and many students are not emerging from high school prepared to enter the workforce. Talley says through it all Academics Plus always maintains its standard of excellence. “We pay attention to what’s going on, but at the end of the day, kids need to learn how to think.

grand love Making A Difference To Encourage And Support Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Grandparents are increasingly assuming the role of raising their grandchildren due to families’ crises, including incarcerations, military deployments and other life-altering circumstances. When longtime Prosper community leaders, Ray and Lena Smith, saw the serious challenges encountered by grandparents on fixed incomes in these situations, they took action to assist by establishing the ‘Grand Love’ nonprofit in 2019. Lena says Grand Love raises funds to help grandparents who are unexpectedly handling delayed retirement, navigating school systems, bridging generational gaps, finding mental health resources and working through court systems -- all due to devoting themselves to parental responsibilities for grandchildren. Both of the Smiths fully understand how vital it is to have ample cash flow to raise children, as they personally experienced becoming parents all over again by adopting their grandsons. Ray serves as Farmers Bank president, and has been the mayor of Prosper for the past 15 years. Lena is an innovative North Texas real estate specialist who “believes nothing is impossible.” Shannon Mason, Grand Love director of operations, says the number of related family situations keeps surging as she highlights the following national US statistics: • More than 3 million grandparents are the sole providers for their grandchildren. • 8-10 million grandparents are primary providers.

• 1.7 million single grandmothers are the sole provider (49% are unemployed). • 25% of these heroes fall below the poverty line. • 25% of these grandparents are disabled. “For every child in the state foster programs, there are 25 being raised by grandparents or other relatives, saving taxpayers $6 billion per year in Texas alone,” says Shannon. Grand Love aids grandparents by providing food, utility assistance and holiday assistance. ‘Grand Summer’ is a program that assists with sending grandchildren to camps. ‘Grand Scholarships’ provide financial assistance to send grandchildren to college. ‘Grand Arts’ sponsors can ‘Adopt a Grand Family’ by providing a one-time or monthly support for grandchildren to pursue the arts through classes or camps, including music, dance, theater, drawing and painting. Shannon says the nonprofit also needs lawyers, therapists, tutors, doctors, dentists and orthodontists willing to bless these families with their volunteer expertise and services. Annually, Ray and Lena host a “Farms to Table” dinner and silent auction to raise money for Grand Love. This year’s event will be Sept. 10 from 5:30-8:30 pm. Local Students Find Their Home at The Guitar Sanctuary

Christen Ch Warren grew up learning an instrument, but like most, stopped as she went through school. As she got older, she missed playing and having something for herself. When her eight-year-old son, Jake, showed an interest in learning music The Guitar Sanctuary quickly became their home. Located in the heart of Adriatica, The Guitar Sanctuary offers private, one-on-one guitar lessons, vocal lessons, piano lessons, bass lessons, and ukulele lessons. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced musician or learning to play has always been something on your bucket list, The Guitar Sanctuary Performance Academy is the perfect place for you. As Managing Partner at The Guitar Sanctuary, Shane Frame’s main role is to build the student base and help mentor the 18 instructors at the Performance Academy. Frame works diligently to make sure each student, whether 6 years old or 76 years old, and their families, feel the Performance Academy is their sanctuary. Ten years ago, Frame started looking at his current students to determine which ones would make good instructors and now uses his student base to help build his teacher base. Having a long-term relationship with his instructors allows him to match the right teacher with the right student. Shane Frame Shane Frame is a professional musician and Managing Partner at The Guitar Sanctuary. Frame grew up in Texas and got involved in music at a young age, watching and listening to his grandfather play. His parents were extremely supportive of his love for music and helped him get involved early, at only nine years old. As a teenager, Frame started playing publicly in church, which allowed him to become a multi-instrumentalist. Over the next 20 years, Frame’s career took him to Nashville working in multiple fields of the music industry, from playing to education to retail to management. Frame has been with The Guitar Sanctuary since 2011 and his role is overseeing and mentoring teachers and the day-to-day operations. Frame believes The Performance Academy plays a large role in helping give teenagers positive role models and mentors while helping build confidence and a sense of purpose. He is a “girl dad” to two amazing women and a grandparent of two granddaughters and a grandson. You can catch Frame playing around the DFW area and other parts of Texas.

Jake Warren Jake started taking guitar lessons in 2012 when he was eight years old. At a young age, he showed a lot of interest in learning. Music was a great way to challenge him and keep him engaged. Jake is a very motivated self-learner and enjoys playing for himself and those close to him. Each summer he loves taking his guitar to Pine Cove Camp and playing while sitting around with his fellow campers. Jake currently is taking lessons from Scott Stine. Jake’s mother, Christen, says that goal is to keep encouraging Jake to learn and hopes he continues playing for himself and others after he graduates high school next spring. Jake is an incoming senior at McKinney Boyd High School. He plays baseball locally for United Baseball and has also played for McKinney Boyd. He was a catcher from age eight and made the change to pitcher last year after having knee surgery. Jake has been a very active MISD PAL participant since junior high and loves working with the kids in the community.

Beck Warren Beck started out taking guitar lessons at seven years old, but then quickly moved over to the piano. He began lessons in 2012 when Christen felt it was important for Beck to have something to be responsible for and to keep him focused each day. He enjoys the challenge of learning and watching himself progress as a player. Beck is currently taking lessons from Cameron Herren and Julia Hu. Beck is an incoming junior at McKinney Boyd High School. Everything Beck tries he does well. He was a competitive gymnast up until two years ago when he chose to move on from gymnastics to play different sports and pursue other interests. He has played lacrosse and football, and is currently challenging himself with learning to box. In his spare time, you can find him working at Rick’s Chophouse in downtown McKinney.

Elle Warren Elle started taking lessons in 2017 when she was six years old. She wanted to do everything her big brothers did and chose the piano because the guitar just was not loud enough. Christen felt it was important for Elle to have something for herself and to keep her learning new things. Elle has been working hard on learning the fundamentals and gets excited about learning Christmas music. Her goal is to stay interested and challenge herself just a little bit more each week. Elle is currently taking lessons from Julia Hu. Elle is an incoming sixth grader at Cockrill Middle School. Christen describes her as a fun and sassy 11-year-old. Elle’s interests are playing volleyball, arts and crafts, vampire movies, Elvis and “hanging” with her friends. She has recently taken up ice skating, which she loves. In addition to the piano, Elle will be pursuing the cello in middle school.

December of 2013, President Obama granted Hernandez clemency, and in 2015, after serving 18 years in prison, Hernandez was released from prison. It was then that Hernandez vowed to come back to the community that he once helped destroy and make up for his past mistakes. While in prison, Hernandez started ATLAST (Aspiring Texas Latinos Achieving Success Together), an organization that aims to inspire Latino students to become confident, empowered, and proud of their heritage and see themselves as leaders in their schools and community. With a grant and the help of City Council Member Justin Beller, ATLAST signed a 10-year lease agreement to become the new owners of The Store.

"This store is the heart and soul of East McKinney and we're about to give it a bypass, " says Hernandez. Hernandez has been busy since May partnering with local businesses to get the store operational and ready to open. All unhealthy food, lottery, and tobacco products have been removed from the existing store and Hernandez is working with local farmers, such as Meg Neubauer of Pure Land Farm and McKinney Roots, to fill the shelves with healthy eating and drinking options. North Texas Tree and Pottery is installing pergolas and landscaping in the area behind the store, allowing kids and parents to have a safe place to enjoy their snacks. This area will be equipped with WIFI, allowing students a place to gather and do their schoolwork. Truficient Energy Solutions is helping fix and maintain anything AC-related within the building. With the new name La Tiendita (the little store), this store will operate as a nonprofit, allowing local high school students to work and learn how to operate a business, healthy eating, and what it means to be part of a community. Donna Collins of The Jelly Queen in downtown McKinney will be teaching the students how to preserve fruits and vegetables so they can create their own products like jellies, jams, and pickled items for sale. Hernandez hopes the skills and knowledge that the students learn while helping operate the store will empower them to go out and pursue a career in areas where Latinos are underrepresented. The goal is for La Tiendita to be a self-sustaining store. Hernandez wants the items in the store to be affordable for all. He sees the store as a “pay it forward” system, where a portion of what someone buys will help subsidize the next person’s purchase. “Honestly, I don't know much about running a store or fruits and vegetables, but I am going to learn it,” says Hernandez. “We are going to learn everything we can and do something good for our Hood.”The Store is located at 902 Greenville Street and will be open for business in early fall. HOMEMADE PEANUT BUTTER PUMPKIN DOG BISCUITS INGREDIENTS + 1/2 cup creamy natural peanut butter + 1/2 cup 100 percent pure pumpkin puree + 1 cup water + 2 tablespoons of coconut oil + 3 cups of whole wheat flour

INSTRUCTIONS 01 Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 02 Line baking sheet with parchment paper. 03 In a large bowl, add the peanut butter, pumpkin, flour, water and coconut oil. There is no need to melt the coconut oil, solid is fine. 04 Mix until all ingredients are combined. 05 Knead the dough until it forms a big ball. 06 Flatten the dough ball either with your fingers or with a rolling pin spread the dough out to approximately 1/4-inch in thickness. 07 Press your cookie cutter into the dough and cut out the biscuit. 08 Place it on the parchment-lined baking sheet. 09 Place in oven and bake for about 30 minutes. 10 Cool on wire rack. 11 Store in an airtight container in refrigerator up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months. If your dog has a wheat sensitivity, you can switch out the flour to an oat, rice or coconut flour. The consistency may just be a little different. Recipe from ProudDogMom.com.
