LIFESTYLE LETTER
May Ladies
May 2022 PUBLISHER
Sharon Duffy | sharon.duffy@citylifestyle.com STAFF WR ITER S
Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community that have left me inspired. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it.

Harper Blvd Spa Committed to Skin
It’s almost summer. You want to look good. You want to wake up and start your day completely unrestricted. From microneedling and peels to dermaplaning and HydraFacials, Harper Blvd Spa offers a wide variety of medspa treatments to tighten, plump, smooth, and correct–leaving skin looking fresh and glowing all season long. Harper Blvd Spa opened its doors in 2015. Owner Amanda Rivas grew up in a small town in West Texas and picked McKinney as the location to open the spa because she loved the small-town feel and sense of community. “I have always dreamed of opening a business, so why not do it in a place that most reminds me of home,” says Rivas. The spa, named after Rivas's daughter Trinity Harper, first opened featuring beauty services like microblading, eyelash extensions, and waxing. Over the last year, there has been a shift to more of an emphasis on revolutionary skin and medical care, like a medspa, with its previous offerings being an add-on rather than a standalone service. Rivas and her staff are passionate about helping their clients feel beautiful and confident in their skin. One of Harper Blvd's specialties is an Enzyme Therapy facial, which detoxifies the skin of all impurities and tightens it for a firmer, youthful, glowing appearance with absolutely no downtime. Their popular HydraFacial treatment tightens the skin while reducing texture, enlarged pores, brown spots, fine lines, and wrinkles, revealing beautiful glowing and healthy skin. “What I love most about Harper Blvd is its welcoming and homey feel,” says Rivas. “We add a lot to our services. We want clients to feel an experience, not just come in and out.” Those seeking results and relaxation on a regular basis may want to consider joining the Boulevard Club. Featuring three different club levels, the Boulevard Club allows members to enjoy regularly scheduled services each month at a great value, along with monthly perks. Harper Blvd Spa is open Monday through Friday and located at 1402 S Custer Rd, Suite 404, McKinney. For more information or to book an appointment call (972) 383-9772 or visit www.harperblvdspa.com.

FRISCO-BASED NONPROFIT HELPS VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE BECOME VICTORIOUS
WOMEN
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
32
FAM ILY CA R E | LOCAL SERVI CE S
Turning other people's panic-stricken, crying moments into hopeful smiles is what Deborah Williams lives for. As founder of Women Empowering Women Foundation, a Frisco-based nonprofit whose supporters assist families affected by domestic violence with resource information to find safe transitional housing, this inclusion-focused special education teacher knew early in her career she wanted to make a difference in the lives of those facing sudden homelessness and despair. It all started when Deborah was asked to be a guest speaker to outline how to become a positive influence for women who were in domestic violence situations. "It's been a long, hard road since 1999, but also an exhilarating journey," reflects Deborah. "I believe we all have a purpose in mind and my purpose is to empower women who need assistance in a violent situation or just need someone to be a positive influence." Part of WEW's vision also is to strengthen families through training, workshops and resources to build new lives free from violence. Deborah says they typically partner with Hopes Door New Beginning Center regarding emergency shelter and emotional counseling. WEW volunteers also gather and supply gift bags with health care, hygiene and beauty products, along with inspirational messages, to women in need at domestic violence shelters. "Too many of our local women flee domestic abuse, and are sleeping in their cars, without money, and there are not enough shelters. Or, shelters are simply full too much of the time. We'd like to raise enough monies to fund our own shelter," Deborah says, indicating that she's even personally paid for housing some victims in hotels for a couple of days until further assistance can be secured. To support WEW efforts, Deborah says donating funds is always helpful, due to the temporary shelter typically needed. She says she's currently working with a real estate agent who is searching for a building to specifically help victims in Frisco, McKinney and Plano. No domestic violence shelters in Collin County, she adds. "There are women who are scared to leave abusive situations because there's nowhere else to go. We pledge to assist, encourage and inspire our downtrodden and less fortunate." WEW also needs product donations to fill the support bags, such as hair care options, gift cards, cosmetics and personal care items, including deodorant, lotion, body wash, toothbrushes and feminine products. "I really hope more of our young women see the signs of empowerment by being with the right group of women," concludes Deborah. Note This Upcoming Event Supporting Self-Employement: WEW, along with The National Home-Based Business Association, is scheduled to present 'Duval’s Side Business Start Up' Luncheon & Seminar For Women on May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Academy Of Black Arts And Theater in Dallas. Discover 175-plus side businesses that can bedstarted with less than $100.

Hair removal in general can be a tricky task. Cactus Sugar Studio specializes in the art of body sugaring, an all-natural alternative to waxing. Sugaring is a safer way of hair removal for all skin types and the benefits are likely to leave recipients saying goodbye to razors, hot wax and irritated skin. Lauren Brummett, owner of Cactus Sugar Studio, jokes that she has been sugaring since before sugaring was cool. First getting certified in 2007, she is no stranger to the McKinney area. Growing up in Melissa, this mother of two opened the studio's doors in March 2020, a week before the pandemic hit. Over the past two years, she has built a reputation in the industry that has people coming from areas all around Texas and even Louisiana visiting her studio. "I work hard to build a personal relationship with everyone who walks through my doors," says Lauren. "You are not just a number here. I have built my reputation on personal touch and services." Sugaring is a combination of sugar, water and lemon juice to form a paste. Cactus Sugar Studio's sugar paste is made of 100 percent natural and organic sourced ingredients. Unlike waxes, its gentle sugar paste is free of chemicals, resins and oils that are known to cause adverse reactions to the skin. Here's how it works: A ball of the paste is applied at body temperature or cooler so it never burns and then molded against the natural direction of hair growth. Then, with a quick flick of the wrist, the sugar is removed in the direction of growth, taking the entire hair and root with it. The same ball of sugar paste is used repeatedly until the undesired hair has been removed. Unlike waxing, which is removed in the opposite direction of hair growth, Sugaring always removes hair with the natural direction of the hair's growth, which improves skin health and eliminates ingrown hairs. For proper technique, the skin is held very taunt, which leads to no pulling or stretching of the skin, therefore, less pain than with the burn or pull of waxing. Cactus Sugar offers sugaring of brows, toes and everything in-between, including armpits, legs and Brazilian sugaring. The studio also offers an array of other services, including facials, "back facials," "bikini facials," brow tints, as well as lash tints and lifts. 469.408.8471 CactusSugar.com

Together For Mental Health ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS
Local Counseling Professionals Provide Trauma Recovery And Emotional Wellness
40
M EN TA L WE LLBE IN G | W E LLNE S S
Dr. Lucy Underwood
For years, the discussion of mental health has been taboo. People have suffered in silence, worrying about keeping up appearances, or being judged by those around them. With a growing number of Americans experiencing mental health issues, many are working to make mental health a mainstream topic. “COVID-19 really highlighted mental health struggles people have on a day-to-day basis,” says Dr. Lucy Underwood, owner and licensed professional counselor at Underwood Counseling & Consultation, PLLC. “We, as a society, had been swinging far in one direction with the onset of the pandemic, and suddenly there is a big swing to the other side. People don't cope well with imposed change.” Mental health struggles are common, according to industry statistics. They can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion or background. Statistics from MentalHealth.gov show that in 2020, one in five American adults experienced a mental health issue, and one in six people who are less than 18 years of age experienced a major depressive episode. Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. It was the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-24. It accounted for the loss of more than 45,979 American lives in 2020, nearly double the number of lives lost to homicide. In the United States, since the COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread lockdown, there has been a substantial increase in the number of people struggling with substance abuse, depression, anxiety and other mental conditions. Psychologists remind that humans are built to connect with people, not to be isolated.
Today’s society has a major impact on the emergence of mental health issues. Social media and the digital world contribute to inadequacies about life or physical appearance, cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), isolation and self-absorption. Job stresses and changes in employment can prompt anxiety and depression. Life transitions, performance pressures, chronic health conditions or health diagnoses all can lead to some sort of trauma. “Trauma is any event that has a lasting negative impact on someone. These events can be anything from moving to losing a loved one to relationship issues," says Dr. Underwood. Mental health is an incredibly important part of overall health care. Just as people need to take care of their physical bodies, everyone's mental state needs care, as well. This can be achieved in many ways, such as talking to a counselor, reading books to support oneself, taking a walk, going on a vacation, meeting up with friends, or just saying no to extra activities or requests. "Self-care is giving yourself the gift of empowerment," says Dr. Underwood. "For most, we've been taking care of our mental health for years, we just didn't realize it." For those struggling, there are several things that can help mental health. Friends and loved ones can make a big difference. Mental health is a team effort and having a personal community is important. Reach out and be heard. Call and talk to a therapist. Sometimes it's easier to talk to a stranger than to someone known. Remember, change will take time; it doesn't happen overnight.

“Self-care is giving yourself the gift of empowerment. For most, we’ve been taking care of our mental health for years, we just didn’t realize it.”
Taking care of one another is often needed. Friends and family can be important influences to help someone get the treatment and services they need. If a change in thinking, feelings or behavior is observed, reach out with care and assistance. Work together to secure the services that can help. As the work to erase the stigma surrounding mental health issues is underway, Dr. Underwood says there are
three key facts that are important to remember when it comes to mental health. • Mental health is health care. • Mental health is approachable. • Healing can happen. 469.712.9134 UnderwoodCounseling.net

It was always a dream of Jack and Fran to open a sustainable business. Griffin Jewelry was founded on family values and the belief that customer service and quality products create a solid business foundation. Jack Griffin had a background in banking and was a successful jeweler. While Fran was the buyer of the store, she made customers feel welcome each time they stepped in the door. Each of their daughters, Cherye, Angie, and Kristi were involved in helping the business grow into what it is today. Jack and Fran retired in 2007. Their daughter Cherye Walker and her husband Kurt bought the family business at that time. As the new owner, Cherye maintained the Griffin name, the family values, and the passion for running a successful small business. Cherye saw an opportunity to offer fashion jewelry, along with fine jewelry, to her customers. The store remains a success today because of the trust and loyalty that has been earned from its customers.

2019 was a proud moment for all the Griffins when the McKinney Chamber of Commerce awarded Griffin Jewelry "The Outstanding Small Business of the Year". Jack attended this event along with his family. It was a special night to honor Griffin Jewelry and his late wife Fran, who had passed away in 2017. Griffin Jewelry has provided exceptional service for over 37 years. They work hard to establish relationships and build trust that keeps customers coming back for all their jewelry needs. The services offered are jewelry repair, watch repair and batteries, appraisals, and custom jewelry design. An on-site jeweler allows for repairs like sizing, soldering, and rhodium plating. They also offer high-tech laser welding, which allows the jeweler to work closely with precious gemstones without fear of overheating them. The custom design service is a one-ofkind experience in creating a unique piece of jewelry. Whether

you are looking to redesign your current piece or create something new, Griffin's custom jeweler will listen to your needs, help create your design, and treasure your heirloom piece. A GIA certified appraiser will provide an honest and accurate jewelry appraisal for your family or estate pieces. Griffin has evolved into Collin County's leading stop for wedding jewelry, including engagement and wedding bands. Jack Griffin passed in 2022 leaving a legacy behind. Griffin Jewelry is a tribute to his hard work. This family-owned small business is a valuable asset to McKinney and the Collin County community. Not only do they provide quality jewelry repair and products, but they also invest in the community. Griffin Jewelry is a gold-level sponsor for Smiles Charity, which builds homes for wounded veterans. Every year they also contribute to ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship. Jack and Fran Griffin left behind a living legacy. Cherye devotes each day to fulfilling their dream of what it means to be a small business owner. Her dedicated employees will serve all your jewelry needs. The success of the store is due to the focus on customer service and quality products.
