Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore both locally and globally. We would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us line or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. We hope that the destinations featured this month give you something to dream about visiting in the near future. Here is to a happy spring full of adventure and peace and sunshine.

“We provide a long-term safe place for healing and growth to individuals impacted by this type of trauma, including food, shelter, education and emotional care.” -Treasured Vessels Foundation Founder/CEO Alicia Bush

Building Shelters. Healing Hearts. Restoring Hope. Those outcomes are objectives of supporters for Treasured Vessels Foundation, a nonprofit whose staff provides safe communities that restore survivors of sexual exploitation and help them achieve their true potential. "We seek justice, dignity and hope. We desire for people to look past brokenness and cracks on the outside to reveal the treasure inside. We provide a longterm safe place for healing and growth to individuals impacted by this type of trauma, including food, shelter, education and emotional care," says Treasured Vessels Foundation Founder/CEO Alicia Bush, who adds a calling was placed on her heart to launch this initiative during 2015 after she discovered the lack of long-term placement for trafficking survivors. Human trafficking occurs in every country and state, says Alicia, and Texas is ranked No. 2 in the nation for human trafficking calls. According to the Trafficking Institute statistics, 83% of trafficking cases in 2020 started online.

WHERE PEOPLE ARE FREE As a Texas native, wife, homeschooling mother of three, author and international missionary, Alicia is an active member in the C7 Coalition, North Texas Coalition Against Sex Trafficking, C3ST, Youth Homelessness Committee, Frisco Chamber of Commerce, Plano Chamber of Commerce and the CEO Non-Profit Council.

Alicia says they currently have a lengthy waitlist of survivors. "Once our funding goal has been met, we'll break ground and start building adjacent to our current property. This will increase our bed count to 12-plus beds, hopefully by the end of 2022," she adds. The foundation assists survivors from Collin, Denton, Dallas, Tarrant and Grayson counties. Treasured Vessels Foundation staffers also are working to create a property to house up to 80 individuals, and have a goal to launch a community for minors by 2024. The program includes treatment plans, educational support, life skill support and other therapies, such as equine, yoga, gardening, art and music. Morgann Delaney, TVF marketing manager, says the length of their program is between 12 and 36 months for ages 18-24 years old. "The women within this program have experienced a significant decrease in PTSD, depression and anxiety," she adds. “Once a woman is recovered, people just kind of put a band-aid on it or pigeonhole her in a substance and alcohol abuse rehab or some sort of other shelter. We really don't have enough specific solutions for an exploited and trafficked woman. We're going to do this right. We're going to do this together as a community,” says Alicia. In the TVF 2021-2022 Impact Report, Alicia states their goal is to become a lifeline model that can be replicated throughout the United States. 469.405.7149 TreasuredVesselsFoundation.org

The Honest-1 TEAM here to help with your your auto care needs!

Honest-1 Auto Care of McKinney ARTICLE BY AMY HENDRICKS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA CARMAN

Honestly Helping the Community Maintain and Repair their Vehicles

32

D R IV E R’S N OT E BOOK | AUTO + MARI NE

Owner Blake Sellers

Driving a vehicle can be one of life’s joys (depending on the car!), a rite of passage when we receive our driver’s license, and even an extension of our independence and freedom. It offers the ability to drive to a job to earn an income or to hit the open road on vacation. Owning and driving any vehicle also comes with the responsibility of maintaining it, having regularly scheduled check-ups, as well as handling unexpected repairs that may arise. That’s where Honest-1 Auto Care of McKinney comes in. Their goal is to provide honest service with integrity, just like their name. Honest-1 offers a wide array of services, including alignments, brake services, diagnostics, electrical, engine maintenance and repair, fluid flushes/oil changes, preventative maintenance, HVAC, steering and suspension, and comprehensive vehicle inspections. Their technicians are highly trained and ASE-certified, so you can trust you’re getting the best possible service. To make your experience as pleasant as possible, Honest-1 has designed their facility to be very comfortable and family-friendly. The lobby area has plenty of comfy chairs, flat screen TVs, a children’s play area, clean restrooms with baby changing stations, a high-top computer bar, along with free WIFI. They also provide a complimentary snack bar stocked with snacks, gourmet coffee, water, and sodas. Large windows separate the repair shop from the lobby so you can observe your vehicle being worked on. Blake Sellers, owner of Honest-1 McKinney, spent the majority of his career in consulting, followed by several years working with start-ups. He then decided he wanted to run his own business. He chose Honest-1 because of its brand promise of having high integrity and being “eco-friendly.” “Unfortunately, the auto care industry as a whole generally has a bad reputation when it comes to honesty and the environment. We’re trying to differentiate our shop,” he says.

Sellers says there are several features that differentiate Honest-1 from other auto care facilities. Among them are a 36-month/36,000-mile warranty on repairs. This nationwide warranty gives customers warranty coverage and service at more than 35,000 authorized facilities across the country! In addition, they offer complimentary vehicle health inspections with an accompanying digital report, and free customer shuttle service within McKinney. They’ve also recently launched a customer loyalty/rewards program called H-1 Rewards. Sellers believes these benefits collectively have helped to earn Honest-1 its 4.8 rating on Google since they opened in 2018. Honest-1 not only serves its customers but strives to serve the community. They offer discounts to teachers and school staff, veterans and active-duty military, first responders, and health professionals. They also collect donations from their customers that support three local non-profit organizations: Hugs Café, Hope For The Warriors, and Hope Clinic. Donations are collected via collection boxes at the complimentary snack bar. Sellers has been married to his wife, Cristina, for 36 years. They have two grown children, Nick and Cary, and a dog named Dobby. His family loves to travel and see the world. Sellers and his family even lived in Italy at one point during his previous career. His favorite place to visit is Breckenridge, Colorado. “It’s our happy place!” Sellers says. Any road trips they take in their travels (including their most recent trip to Breckenridge in their 2011 Lexus with 153,000 miles!) will no doubt be in a well-maintained vehicle, thanks to Honest-1. Need help with the design of your new home or looking to freshen up the appearance of your existing one, then look no further than local design expert Sue Yaghi. Sue’s Chic Interiors is dedicated to helping bring visions to life. Sue's Chic Interiors opened its doors in historic downtown McKinney on October 5, 2021, offering chic and elegant home decor to North Texas families and businesses. Sue’s Chic Interiors is a concept-led, full-service business, working with clients from design development until full execution. "Our wide selection of services means that Sue's Chic Interiors is the one-stop shop for all design needs," says Yaghi. “From the initial phone call to final design, we will work closely with clients to deliver beautiful and practical designs.”

Yaghi has been an interior designer for 21 years. Her educational experience started at LSU and then continued to the Art Institute in Minneapolis, where she received her bachelor's degree. She has worked for small and large companies doing both commercial and residential projects. Yaghi’s biggest and proudest work was a 250,000 SF commercial project. She started Sue's Chic Interiors last fall when her husband retired, and it was time for her to bring to life a dream. “Despite being new, I've built this business over 20 years and my track record speaks for itself,” says Yaghi. “My hope is that Sue's Chic Interiors will become the go-to brand for chic design and interiors.” In addition to offering design services and sourcing furniture, Sue’s Chic Interiors is one of the few businesses in the United States that combines Interior Design and Professional KonMari organizing services. There are 700 certified KonMari consultants in the entire world, but Sue's Chic Interiors is the only place in Texas to also offer interior design services.

Yaghi says what makes her clients special is the fact they seek elegance and personalized service. Sue’s Chic Interiors is not a cluttered furniture business and all the pieces in the showroom are curated specifically for clients. “Everything we curate has to be elegant yet still functional and comfortable. Similarly, our design and organizing services are done with a high level of passion and commitment to our client's satisfaction,” says Yaghi. McKinney was an easy choice for the shop’s location. Yaghi believes the tagline "Unique By Nature" is truly reflective of McKinney as a place that is vibrant and unique with its people and history. Historic Downtown McKinney is an ideal location because something is going on every day, and it is truly a great place for businesses to be. Sue’s Chic Interior is located at 218 E. Louisiana Street. Visit Music City

Getaway to Nashville

and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’

Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. It’s a destination drenched in distinction with elevated tastes, down-home charm and a range of discoveries both well-known and emerging—Nashville is ready to rock your world. With recent headlines such as “Top destinations for food and city lovers” (Tripadvisor), “Most anticipated hotel openings of 2022” (Forbes), and “Top global venues for live music” (Tennessean), Nashville has so much more than you’ve ever imagined, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. Whether you’re a Nashville enthusiast or a novice soon to cross this off your domestic bucket list, you will love the medley of past meets present and Southern roots paired with modern amenities. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Gorges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville.

38

M UST SE E | TR AVEL

When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous. Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated—the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.”

As for the lay of the land, Nashville is definitely a city of neighborhoods. East Nashville is funky, artsy, trendy and quirky. Germantown is a little more upscale with its chef-driven restaurants and walkable nature, known as Nashville’s first neighborhood founded by German settlers. 12South has eateries, boutique shopping and a lot of local favorites. Wedgewood-Houston is in transition mode right now with great breweries, distilleries, bakeries and art galleries. In the end, they all have their own scene. Plus, you can shop your heart out at a wealth of boutiques, galleries and local maker shops, as well as Nashville’s upscale The Mall at Green Hills brimming with luxury stores such as Golden Goose and Gucci. Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds. And, what better way to bestow a no-questions-asked travel itinerary than with the locals’ knowledge. “Once people experience the genuine hospitality of Nashville to the level they do, many are surprised by how incredibly friendly people are.” - Visit Music City

“Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries, and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings.”

HOW TO INTEGRATE HOUSE PLANTS IN YOUR HOME

S EASON A L SE T U P S | L IFE + CULTURE

PLANTS FOR BEGINNERS I am obsessed with plants! But, truth be told, I have a painted green thumb. This can be translated as “having a love for plants, killing some while successfully growing others.” I confess that in spite my best efforts, I cannot keep orchids, ferns or succulents alive for more than a few weeks. I can, however, grow some things and do so very well! I can’t wait to share with you the plants that have lived in my home for over 15 years… successfully!! If you’re new to the plant world then I hope knowing that about me gives you the courage to try your hand at growing too. So, paint your thumb green (hypothetically!) and join me @silvertoothfarmhome as we grow things together.
