Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. If you are looking for Mason Nowak, chances are you will find him at the Children’s Health StarCenter in McKinney on the ice. He learned to skate when he was 8 and never stopped chasing the puck. Today, he is a dedicated senior in Prosper High, splitting his time between the ice and the classroom. Mason’s passion for ice hockey has landed him on two competitive hockey teams. He plays competitive hockey on both the Varsity Prosper Eagles team as well as on the 18U AA McKinney North Stars travel team. Juggling an intensive hockey training / practice schedule is never an easy feat, but Mason successfully manages his busy hockey training schedule for both teams with multiple practice days/times, and still achieves academic success, even with multiple AP classes on his schedule. His leadership skills on and off the ice have earned him the position of being Captain of the Prosper Varsity team, and Assistant Captain on the McKinney North Stars team. Previously, he was Assistant Captain the Prosper Varsity team in 2020, and Captain of the Fox Valley Hawks in Geneva, IL in 2018 and 2019.

The Varsity Head Coach and Hockey Director Yev Saidachev and Varsity Assistant Coach and Goalie Coach Kenny Carroll both recognize Mason as an outstanding student athlete on their Prosper team.

In June 2020, Mason moved to Texas with his family from Saint Charles, IL. Currently, he is a senior at Prosper High school, focusing on Business Management and Administrative Service, and looking forward to going to college later this year. His goal is to major in Accounting and to start a career with the FBI.

Mason started his hockey career in Illinois when he was just eight years old and joined his first travel hockey team when he was ten. He grew up in Illinois and watched the Chicago Blackhawks win 3 coveted Stanley

As for hockey, he plans to continue to grow his career by playing college club hockey or Junior hockey.

Ferro Steel Doors opened its state-of-the-art showroom in August 2021 and quickly has become the “go-to” company for custom steel and iron doors in the Metroplex. The showroom features 1,200 square feet of custom wrought iron doors and railings, steel doors, and windows. While the showroom and website feature many modern and traditional designs, everything is 100 percent customizable. “We’re very excited to share the absolute best iron and steel doors in McKinney,” said Tatiana Ruiz, Owner and Founder. “The new showroom shares our love of custom, handforged door and window designs.” Ruiz moved to McKinney four years ago and has seen first-hand how much the area has grown and wanted to help contribute to that growth. Many Americans share the dream of wanting to start a business; only some are driven, determined and fortunate enough to make that dream a reality. Blake Luby is the proud owner of not one, but two local businesses: DFW Fence Pro and DFW Roofing Pro. Although they’re separate entities, both were built from the same passion and now operate together as business family. While in his teens, Blake was an avid golfer, playing professionally on mini tours. He says he was considering dozens of golf scholarship offers when fate changed his course. A serious vehicle accident during his senior year in high school resulted in a shoulder injury and derailed his plans. Instead of leaving for college, he recovered from the accident and went to work for his mom’s neighbor, who owned a landscaping business. Although it was a different path from his original plans, he says he found himself gaining valuable skills and experience, such as sales, becoming bi-lingual and getting his agricultural and pesticide licenses. Blake then went on to work for Valley Crest, the company responsible for maintaining the beautiful landscaping at Disney World, and furthered his knowledge and experience on a larger scale. He says he saved money and eventually purchased his own trailer and spray rig, which allowed him to open his own, full-service landscaping company. By the time he turned 22, he’d built and sold three landscaping businesses. The hard work and business knowledge Blake gained in his early years has allowed him to make DFW Fence Pro and DFW Roofing Pro into the thriving businesses they are today. He also attributes his mom, Donna Luby, with instilling in him a strong work ethic. “She raised me with a no-excuses mentality,” he lovingly remembers. He runs his businesses alongside a very tight-knit team that includes his brother, Brandon. Blake considers his team to be all one big family, whether they’re related or not. Blake recalls that he was once told he wouldn’t make it in the roofing business because it was too difficult. He’s definitely proven that prediction wrong. His fiancée, Morgan, also has a son, Knox (3). He’s already started sharing his love of golf with their boys. Given the strong work ethic coursing through the family, perhaps the boys will carry on the family business someday.

We live in a world where “free consultations” and a promise for a beautiful smile are on every corner, billboard, and social media ad. So where do you go to look for someone who will truly care about you and your family? I can tell you it’s not by clicking ads for a free consultation on Facebook! How do I know? Because, just like you, I have been there. After two years of searching for a dental professional that cared enough to listen to my concerns and needs, I finally gave up. That is—until I walked into Dr. Jensen’s office. I could sense there was something different as soon as I entered the reception area. His team members were kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. The reception area walls were decorated with a beautiful butterfly collection provided by Dr. Jensen’s wife, Cherie. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting. Dr. Jensen walked out, shook my hand, and greeted me with a genuine smile. After a thorough discussion, it was easy to see he truly loves what he does. His professional hallmark is that he understands the very complexities of my dental concerns but is able to convey that to me in clear, simple terms with sincerity and honesty. He understands and knows my case and each case. His patients are not just a number, but rather people that he truly invests in. Dr. Jensen is not only an orthodontist but is also a prosthodontist. What’s the difference you ask? Well, best I can articulate is that an orthodontist is a specialist in the biomechanics of tooth movement, while a prosthodontist is a specialist who reconstructs worn, broken or missing teeth—unlike any regular dentist. But the two specialties blend together quite nicely in creating super smiles and functionally balanced teeth. Initially, Dr. Jensen received his dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry. At that point, he could have opened a practice and gone to work, but he could see he had only scratched the surface and was instead determined to set himself apart. His specialist training began with prosthodontics at UT San Antonio, where he was a resident for three years. This was high-level training that taught complex treatment planning and refined hand skills. During this residency, Dr. Jensen took on complicated interdisciplinary patients which often required orthodontics as part of their plan. He then undertook another residency in orthodontics, becoming the first dual specialist in prosthodontics and orthodontics to ever graduate from UT San Antonio. He is currently one of only a handful of these “aardvarks” in North America with dual certificates in both specialties. Dr. Jensen is a board-certified orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics—a voluntary distinction that is only achieved by 25 percent of practicing orthodontists. His accolades include Patients’ Choice Award Winner and D Magazine best dentist multiple years running. He is also recognized for his charity work with Smiles Change Lives program. Family, community, and church are all of paramount importance to Dr. Jensen. He is service-oriented, hands-on, and passionate about life. He has been in private practice for 15 years.

Interestingly, while Dr. Jensen was in college at BYU he minored in the Korean language. He took a break from college and his own pursuits and served among the Korean people in Korea as a missionary for two years. A year and a half of that time was spent among the Korean deaf people, where he had to master Korean sign language to be able to communicate. It was there he gained a new respect for people from faraway lands, their language, their customs, and the reality that there are different cultures who look at the world differently than we do in America. This taught him a unique perspective on people. As a matter of other interests, Dr. Jensen enjoys photography and even offers one-on-one photoshoots with his patients. Many of these faces are on display in his office. As a teenager he really loved aviation and wanted to become a pilot. He earned his license when he was seventeen. Obviously, he went a different route for a career, but he still stays current and flies today. His mother was a piano teacher and taught him to play at a young age. He makes time to practice nearly daily and is sometimes asked to play for various reasons in church. He even sings with Millennial Choirs and Orchestras (MCO), an organization whose purpose is to soften hearts, improve lives, and unite communities across

America by creating beautiful sacred and classical music that praises God. He has performed in the Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas and even in Carnegie Hall in New York. Dr. Jensen lives in Prosper and places strong importance on family and people. He believes when he is home it should be about home. When he and his daughter Liberty spend time together, he is quick to put away electronics so he can focus on the time they spend together doing home projects and the like. He says that finding a work/home balance can be challenging, but that “people business” should take precedent over nearly everything else in life. It is easy to see certificate credentials on the wall and think they’re all the same, but we rarely get a glimpse of the person behind the credentials which would set him apart.
