LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year!
January 2022 PUBLISHER
Sharon Duffy | sharon.duffy@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Tom Bridges | tom.bridges@citylifestyle.com
Instead of trying to pontificate on all that there is at the beginning of a new year, we thought we would share some more tired and true quotations from other, more widely known individuals. You will also note various changes in the layout starting with this issue. AROUND TOWN is now BUSINESS MONTHLY. GOOD TIMES is now CITY SCENE, and the CALENDAR is now EVENTS. While they make look slightly different, they will serve the same purpose as before to connect our communities and serve notice as to significant events and notices. Now, back to the New Year! • “Celebrate endings—for they precede new beginnings.” —Jonathan Lockwood Huie • “Don’t live the same year 75 times and call it a life .” —Robin Sharma • “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365-page book. Write a good one.” — Brad Paisley • “New year—a new chapter, new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately we write it. The choice is ours.” —Alex Morritt • “Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” — Oprah Winfrey • “The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are.” —J.P. Morgan Related: Virtual New Year’s Eve Games But, then there are the resolutions, but we won't stick with the typical: • Break a bad habit • Learn a new skill • Do more good deeds • Visit a new place • Write something important • Do a good deed for someone you don't know and who cannot thank you • Smile a little more each day • Don't be afraid to laugh...or to cry • Have faith that good things are on their way...positivity does help! • Never forget we all make mistakes So, live your life in this New Year in a way that will make you stronger, mentally as well as physically, and remember to cherish those around you. Have a very happy, safe, and productive year in 2022. We all deserve it! • “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” — Thomas Jefferson

SUSAN HANEY AND UPSTREAM HEALTH COACHING
Susan Haney
So, Susan earned the title of Integrative Nutrition Health Coach studying under the world's top health and wellness experts at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She worked with leaders in the field from such outstanding institutions as Harvard, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York University, and the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, as well as many other innovators involved in nutrition and lifestyle. Completing her studies in early 2021, she has now become one of the top “go-to” nutritional coaches in the area. She attributes her success to date to a number of reasons, but she believes being a good listener is one of the most important. Susan knows what it’s like to have health issues and is mission-driven to share her new knowledge with others. One of the key issues to change peoples’ lives for the better is to really get to know them well. Her education provided her with “extensive, cutting-edge knowledge in holistic nutrition, health coaching, and prevention”. She draws on her expertise and training to provide the guidance and support to change a client’s ability to understand nutrition and lifestyle choices. The goal is to find the best food and lifestyle that work for you so that you can make improvements in your life. Susan is motivated to improve your energy, balance, health, and happiness, all of which lead to a better quality of life. But Susan also understands that life balance is not just attained through nutrition. She will consult with you to bring more balance to other important elements of your life. Love and relationships as well as career and money also contribute significantly to your overall happiness. Susan says she “will personally and carefully guide you to make simple, small changes that transform your life”.
SUSAN WILL WORK WITH YOU TO:
Tired of one-size-fits-all approaches to dieting? – Drained from toxic relationships? – Overwhelmed by stress at work? – Fed up with those nagging cravings? – Want to feel great in your body? If you’re ready to accomplish your goals in a way that’s empowering and exciting, meet Susan Haney and Upstream Health Coaching. Trying to help people live healthier lives has consumed the majority of Susan Haney’s life. As SVP of Marketing for Gaiam, the nation’s largest provider of yoga and fitness content and products, Susan was motivated to give back. Her inspiration came from the well-known “Upstream” parable about the person who kept dragging drowning people from the river to save them, without paying any notice as to the root cause. It formed her current mission, which is to help people before they start “drowning”. Thus, she decided to go “upstream” to help improve life quality for her clients.
• Connect the dots between who you are and who you want to be • Create your personal blueprint • Decipher your body’s unique needs • Set your personal goals and work towards sustainable change Susan was raised in New Jersey and earned a BA in Business Administration from Union College. She moved to McKinney four years ago and definitely loves the lifestyle provided by this awesome community. She had always wanted a small, historic home in the setting that McKinney provides. She is married to her husband, Michael and they have two dogs, a Lab named Molly and a mix-breed rescue named Harry. So, if you are ready to really achieve who you want to be and increase your quality of life in various ways, visit www.upstreamhealthcoaching.com, email Susan at susan@upstreamhealthcoaching.com, or call (215) 932-5761.

Dr. Ijeoma Nwankpa
Dr. Ijeoma Nwankpa, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT, CIDN is a Doctor of Physical Therapy who is one of few in the metro Dallas - Fort Worth area that is an American Board of Physical Therapy Certified Specialist in Women/ Men Pelvic Health (WCS), Certified Lymphedema Physical Therapist (CLT), trained Sexuality Counselor/ Coach and is a Certified Dry Needling Therapist (CIDN). Many believe that someone with that many letters behind their name are stuffy know-it-alls who aren’t very good at listening, and some are. But you will find Dr. Nwankpa to be a warm, relaxed therapist who is totally focused on consulting and collaborating with you as well as educating you on the best options for your body. Her therapies are based much more on holistic approaches as opposed to meds and her warm smile and overall “bedside manner” are found healing in their own ways. Physical Therapy for the pelvic floor was initiated in the 1960s. Dr. Nwankpa had experienced pelvic pain, which also affected her posture when she was young. Her interest in becoming a pelvic floor therapist came as a result of the relief she experienced personally. Born in New Jersey, she eventually practiced in renowned institutions as Duke, Emory, and the University of North Carolina, where she is still an adjunct professor in their studies in women’s health and the pelvic floor. Dr. Nwankpa was able to convince her husband, Gene, a software engineer for Microsoft, to move to McKinney to be near her family. Lucky Collin County!

reproductive system. We specialize in the treatment of pelvic floor impairments. Prenatal and Postpartum Care— Management of musculoskeletal conditions during prenatal and postpartum that may lead to pain and dysfunction Cancer survivorship and Oncology Care— Aid in the overall cancer survivorship recovery by focusing on regaining strength, decreasing scar tissue, and increasing range of motion. Lymphedema Therapy— We specialized in Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) massage techniques and compression to decrease abnormal swelling in limbs Dry Needling— Specialized technique to directly treat underlying muscular trigger points for the management of pain and movement impairments.
PTSD & TRAUMA THERAPY Dr. Nwankpa says some of her previous experience had been in sites that had the attitude of getting the patients “in-and-out” quickly. She wants everyone to know that she is just the opposite. Her office will be limiting the number of patients she sees per day so that she can spend whatever time she needs to listen to her patient and consult and collaborate with them to determine the best line of therapy for them. Dr. Nwankpa and Gene have two sons, Kelenna, 6, who loves monster trucks and soccer, and Kansi, 3, who is a huge fan of Captain America and the Hulk! When not working, she likes cooking, always looking for a new recipe, exercising and taking walks, and simply hanging with friends. An Amazing Young Lady MAKAYLA NOBEL ARTICLE BY TOM BRIDGES PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED, SHARON DUFFY
Makayla Noble
In your lifetime, you may never meet anyone who demonstrates, in spite of a life-altering physical injury, poise, grace, and inspiration more than Makayla Noble. Makayla had been a cheerleader for several years of her young life, being only 16 when the accident occurred. After performing countless backflips and numerous other tumbling and cheer exercises, on September 20th, 2021, her timing was off just enough to land her in a way that resulted in a severe spinal cord injury with partial paralysis. She was involved with a few of the cheerleaders in one of their backyards, attempting to teach about 30 of her classmates part of a routine to be performed at Prosper High School’s homecoming pep rally. Her initial thought? “Gee, I just feel in front of 30 teenagers.” However, she also knew immediately the severity of her injury. She couldn’t move anything from her waist down or her hands. Makayla was spent 3-4 weeks in ICU at a hospital in Plano. One can only imagine, if you haven’t experienced such a tragic event either yourself or as a family member or friend. Makayla said her worst feelings were initially the realization of how much her life would be altered due to simply a moment in time. Not uncommon for patients who have had a tracheotomy, she developed an issue with her lungs that delayed her going to rehab, but, finally, on
her 17th birthday, Makayla finally got to go to rehab. But before leaving, she was surprised by a visit by all of the first responders who helped her on that fateful day. You get a sense of the empathy this young lady exudes when you hear her talk about her experiences in the rehab facility, TIRR in Houston, TX. This facility focuses on patients with all kinds of cranial and spinal injuries as well as amputees. Makayla said she saw many with much more significant injuries and issues than hers. She became known as the “Mayor of the Rehab Floor” because she learned everyone’s name and constantly was showing her beautiful smile while enduring all she had to during her 4 weeks there. Makayla is now receiving rehab at Baylor. Finally being at home, she says one of the biggest adjustments she has had to make is the fact that, after having been around so many in wheelchairs, it is odd for her to be the only one typically in one. But she was recently baptized and says her faith is one of the things who helps her through it all. The petite, but spunky, little girl who was nicknamed “Big Mac” has grown into a beautiful, smiling, and inspiring young lady with the nickname of Mak. So, you will find many of her links and the stories about her referring to such things as Mak’s Story at www.makaylanoble.com. Support has poured in, but so much more is needed to get her and her family CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MC K I N N E YA N D P R O S P E R

through the costs due to her injury. Funds have been raised through a site such as Makayla’s Fight and events as the 1st Annual Do It for Mak Golf Tournament, with plans for a second next year already in the making. Makayla’s family moved to Prosper six years ago from Indiana and prior to her injury she had achieved so many accolades as a cheerleader. Mak joined Cheer Athletics in Plano earning a position as a flyer on the world champion, Cheetahs (Large Senior Coed Level 6). Mak went on to earn national honors, including the 2018 NCA National Championship and the 2019 Cheer World Championship. Mak achieved the honor of being named High School AllAmerican for three consecutive years. She has had to change her outlook for college since she will no longer be able to gain a scholarship for cheering (her choice to attend would probably have been The University of Oklahoma), but now she anticipates earning a degree in some business major. She also wants to eventually write a book about her story that would serve as an inspiration for anyone who has suffered from a similar, life-altering injury. Jenn Love, Makayla’s mother couldn’t be prouder of how much support of family, friends, and even strangers from around the world have all offered financial support, gifts, and, more importantly, love for Makayla. Rounding out the household is a female cat named “Kevin”, a sweet orange tabby who loves sitting in Makayla’s lap while purring. The one thing Makayla wants people to know about her is that she is the same “me”. One thing for sure, as you search through the pictures of her as a cheerleader and then see her smile today, you can see that her perseverance though it all hasn’t changed her at all.

Don’t Let the Name Fool You TITLE BOXING CLUB WILL BE THE BEST HOUR OF YOUR DAY!
ARTICLE BY TOM BRIDGES PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA
This fitness focused, locally and family-owned business is a total surprise to many. No, you don’t hit anyone, and no one hits you. But if you want to experience the truly best boxing-inspired workout of your life, go hit the bags and enjoy an hour of workout that can truly transform your body, as well as teach you a little about protecting yourself and your family. TITLE BOXING CLUB is owned by Justine Poffel. The club is celebrating their 10 Year Anniversary serving the city of McKinney. Justine had discovered this facility years ago and learned quickly that it was, as she states emphatically, “The best workout I had ever had.” So, when the opportunity arose to purchase the business, her 401k from working in the telecom industry was used so she could enter a field she is truly passionate about. It is absolutely a family-owned and operated business. Her husband Stephen makes sure that everything is working right and installs new products and fitness equipment. Their oldest son Jack is a trainer while their 20-year-old son Jonah works behind

“Title has literally become a lifestyle change for me. The instructors are hands down the best in the industry and teach in such a way that your motion and execution of the combinations are fluid. I’ve fostered some strong relationships with other members and consider the staff as my friends. It’s the only place where you pay someone to challenge you physically and mentally in every class.” — Paul Harris, TITLE Member
the desk, and Cooper (12) and Ben (20) help during special events. They consider the community as part of their family and support various charities and non-profits and are always looking to support and partner with other local businesses. This is not the experience you get in bigbox gyms or other come-and-go fitness fads. Justine is proud of the solid reputation they have earned as being a place you look forward to coming into. The CLUB has become a place where you can meet, or join with, friends, somewhere you will receive great support and motivation on their fitness journeys. Many have found this to be their sanctuary where they can use this great workout to help boost their spirits when feeling down or going through tough times. Craving a change? This could be the place that will finally provide you with the program to do it! Like every other fitness facility, the pandemic affected membership. In fact, the pandemic has created a number of changes in the industry. There are online workouts and fitness at home products. But what is lacking in those are what humans need to the most— community interaction, being with friends, not just being pushed, but pushed while using the proper technique. Some exercises, if performed wrong, can do more harm than good. Plus, the beauty of TITLE BOXING CLUB is that you don’t have to come only during specific class times. As a member you can hit up the club at any time during the day to box under the 50+ bag stand, workout on the
cardio equipment or lift weights in the weight area between 5:15 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday and 8:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays. Want a private lesson, Sundays are available by appointment only. It’s no secret the pandemic has been very tough on the fitness industry, prompting most fitness studios to focus on reducing expenses and cutting costs. Justine and Stephen took the opportunity to increase the number of products and services, making the overall experience even better than before. Enhancing the club experience by upgrading the audio and video systems, incorporating Myzone Heartrate Monitoring to gamefy the workout experience and offering state of the are InBody Body Compostions scans so their members can measure their results at the most professionally accurate level. TITLE Boxing Club McKinney is by design the opposite of your standard big box cookie cutter gym 24-hour gym. “We tell our members every day, we are here because you are here,” Says Justine, “and every decision we make, every class we teach, event we facilitate is for them.” Come to the CLUB and see what all has been added to enhance your experience and resulting performance. The staff and trainers at the CLUB do this as their careers of choice. General Manager Isaiah Perez has been working at the club since its inception in 2012 and studied physical therapy in school. Head trainer Delmar Peirce is a current mixed martial artist getting ready to go from amateur to professional in 2022. CONTINUED >

Making Bones Stronger OsteoStrong ARTICLE BY TOM BRIDGES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA CARMAN
Did you know that 1 in 2 women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis? Did you know a man over 50 is more likely to break a bone due to osteoporosis than to get prostate cancer? But there is help that can reduce your chances of such unfortunate events from occurring - OsteoStrong! “The Ultimate Biohack!” OsteoStrong is a membership-based Integrated Health and Wellness Center with a Focus on Musculoskeletal Strengthening. A Robotic Musculoskeletal Development System consisting of 4 devices is used to allow members to briefly load many multiples of their body weight onto their musculoskeletal system.
44
LOCA LLY OWN E D | WEL LNE S S
The four-device circuit takes about 10 minutes once per week to complete. Under the direction of a certified session coach, users engage in a safe, controlled movement on each device that results in a stimulus to the central nervous system triggering osteogenesis, or new bone growth. Sessions are pain-free and sweat-free. Each device provides instant biofeedback with a member’s impact emulation force exertion measured in pounds and multiples of body weight. Data is recorded and a report is sent to the member detailing their progress at the end of each session.
Clients report up to 14% increases in Bone Mineral Density over 12 months, between bone density scans. They also report increased agility, decreased joint pain, significant improvements in strength, balance, and better posture.
WHO CAN BENEFIT? • Anyone with osteopenia or osteoporosis • Pre and Post-Menopausal women • Anyone wanting to complement pharmaceuticals or explore an alternative to them • Deconditioned patients needing strength and balance training • Anyone at risk for falls or poor balance • Individuals experiencing chronic pain or poor posture • Anyone in need of post-physical therapy strengthening Ellen Allam
OsteoStrong works because it allows users to apply enough force to their skeletal structure to cause the bone to adapt and grow. For instance, scientific studies have shown the hip joint requires a minimum of about 4x bodyweight to trigger growth. As adults, impact becomes associated with injury. OsteoStrong allows people to get the benefit of impact without the associated risks, providing a physical medicine option that has no side effects. Ellen Allam is the Managing Owner of the McKinney-Stonebridge Osteostrong located at 5531 Virginia Parkway, Suite 300. She is a military Veteran and has an MBA from The University of Tennessee and a BS in Business AdministrationMarketing from Lawrence Technological University in MI. She held various corporate manufacturing, sales, and marketing positions for a Fortune 50 consumer products company before taking a hiatus from the workforce to raise her family and care for her Mom who suffered from Dementia and Osteoporosis for 20 years. During this time away from the workforce she developed a strong interest in health and wellness to the point where she knew she wanted to transition into a career in the wellness sector upon the

Improvements can be seen in: • (BMA) Bone Mass Density • Increased agility • Decreased joint pain • Significant improvements in strength and balance • Better posture
completion of her care-taking duties. When she was diagnosed with osteopenia/ osteoporosis she found OsteoStrong. She had been a member for two years and was so happy with the results she decided to open her own OsteoStrong with her husband and partner of over 25 years, Ed. He has an MBA from The University of Dallas and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University. He has held various Information Technology positions for Fortune 20 financial services and telecommunications companies. Ed and Ellen adopted their two sons, Jacob, 23, and Joseph, 21, when they were babies from Russia. They also enjoy their two elderly cats, Allie and Harold. The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 46
S ELF CA R E | FITNESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.
48
S ELF CA R E | FITNESS
Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

Community Fitness Challenge JUST DO IT!!!! Mayor Ray Smith is proud of the past performances of the citizens of Prosper who participated in the previous seven years in which they competed in the state-wide contest. The city won three of those years, which is remarkable considering how many competing cities entered. The goal is to have the highest number of miles logged between January 17th and March 18th. Each individual’s goal is to walk, run, or even crawl (as Mayor Smith says) a total of 100 miles. Or, if you prefer to bike, your goal would be 300 miles. Come on, bikers! Many of you are already logging more than that! Be sure and sign up through the Parks and Recreation Center. The mileage is based on the honor system, so you don’t have to worry about having to find a partner or group, although it would be great if you encouraged your friends and neighbors to join you. “Mayor Smith has always been an advocate for healthy living and The Community's Fitness Challenge is something he strongly believes in,” says Robyn Battle, Prosper’s Executive Director of Community Services. “He wants to see all of our residents enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle,” she added. Mayor’s Fitness Challenge participants that track at least 100 miles walking or running or 300 miles biking within the 90-day window receive a t-shirt, an entry to win a Fitbit, and recognition at a Town Council meeting. Tracking sheets and full details can be found at prospertx.gov. Contact Todd Rice, Todd Rice, Communications Manager, with any questions. T 972.569.1025 trice@prospertx.gov
