The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it's the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who've recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s reach out to those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. McKinney Farmers Market to Has New Winter Schedule The McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square will open every Saturday for the winter season for the first time in 15 years, according to a news release. The market, located at 315 S. Chestnut St., McKinney, regularly operates from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays but will be open with reduced hours from 9 a.m. to noon from January through March 2023. There will be no farmers market on Dec. 24 due to Christmas Eve.

New Community Gathering Space And City Hall Construction Is Underway City officials and community members broke ground for the future McKinney Municipal Community Complex, which also will house the new McKinney City Hall. The 175,000-squarefoot, five-story building will be on nearly nine acres at the intersection of East Virginia Street/Throckmorton Street. It will include 180-seat Council Chambers and 96-seat event space, plus a conferencing center, with five conference rooms on the ground level and four additional conference rooms on the top floor.

Finch Park Second Phase Opens In accordance with McKinney's approved 2010 Master Plan, a new phase of Finch Park opened to the public. The park now offers all-new play structures, a pickleball court, an updated pavilion and a splash pad for the next summer season. RAMBLERS Jacob Williams And Mike Major Have Crossed Paths For A Reason ARTICLE BY JODIE BROWND

It’s a funny thing when fate goes to work on constructing a plan. Imagine two young boys living two separate and different lives in distant parts of the South. Despite not knowing each other growing up, Jacob Williams and Mike Major, both have characteristics similar to you and any kid you grew up with that blared AC/DC music out of their trucks on their way to the field house in their hometowns. You know the kind, their boyish grins could get them out of any trouble they could find, yet, both had grandparents, dear to their hearts, who served as their moral compass. Jacob and Mike are just good, All American young men whose families gave them a sense of integrity, balance and hard work from an early age. It seems they’d do anything they could to help even a stranger in need. They’re both hard workers and have taken their post-college careers seriously, having an appreciation for making an honest living. With that said, don’t dare be fooled. These guys love to have a good time, too. The good time for Jacob Williams started in TontiTown, Arkansas, while Mike Majors claims Tulsa, Oklahoma, as his home. So how did these two end up at The Gin in Prosper? It’s nothing short of fate, raw talent and pure music. These two met while working together at Crossland Construction, and it just so happened that their love of having fun, making music and playing the songs we all grew up with makes for a pretty incredible Saturday night. Most guys their age bask in the attention of the girls that show up to a gig played by guys that look like they do. “Although that may be a plus,” they laugh as they tell of the real reasons they’re now at home on a stage: “For some performers, it’s all about the girls, for us it’s all about playing music.” CONTINUED >

These two say they agree, if they can play the music they love and get their minds off of their worries, they’ve had a good night whether they’ve played for a full house or only a few. When they aren’t playing, they’re both busy making a living. Performing as a hobby for Jacob began when his Grandmother Mickey Jensen paid for his first guitar lesson which has proven to be a good investment. He recalls jamming out with his dad to Van Halen and Led Zeppelin and fell in love with live music when his mother took him to George’s Majestic Lounge, the longest-running live music venue in Fayetteville, Arkansas.Learning new songs to play for friends growing up, like Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show and anything by Kenny Chesney are some of his favorite memories. Once, when Mike was 10 years old, his dad had heard that Ted Nugent was playing at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and simply looked at his boy and said,” Let’s Go!” They did and that 10-yearold boy taught himself to play the guitar, piano and drums. One day when he was toying around singing and playing, his grandad, who was a no-nonsense farmer and factory worker, listened on the other side of the door, walked in and said, “You know, I think you’re good enough to be a professional musician.” That was all he needed to hear to keep on dreaming, as that meant everything coming from him, he recalls. Who knows why we cross paths with the people that we do? These two have definitely made the most of the similarities in goals and talents that they share, and with that, The Red Iron Ramblers were born. Two guys that act like brothers but who are from two completely different mothers, both born into hard-working families that planted the seed of following their dreams at an early age. Most of us have probably stood proudly with a lighter in a room full of strangers at a concert and listened to a song that made us all feel like we were part of something bigger than ourselves. That’s a place where dreams are born and songs are imprinted on our hearts as memories. They both agree that playing gigs are easier than they originally thought. Jacob says they’re just learning as they go and are proud of how far they’ve come. They were invited to play at the Crossland Construction Christmas party and they agreed to do it just for fun. What happened there launched them to a different comfort level of performance as they were met with completesupport and astounding praise. They also played at The Red Door in Tulsa where all of their friends and family showed up and the two just blew everyone away with their performance. Since then, they’ve been invited to play at many top-name venues in Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, and the list isn’t likely to stop there. For those who enjoy New Age Red Dirt Music, or the sounds of Morgan Wallen, The Turnpike Troubadours, Zac Bryan or Chris Stapleton, you will be taken away by The Red Iron Ramblers. Jacob and Mike are two guys making a living while following their dreams and making the most of the unexpected paths they cross.

She says she’s always been passionate about serving individuals facing the justice system and believes everyone is “redeemable.” Originally from a small town in East Texas, she attended Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law on a Presidential Scholarship. Beginning with her first law school internships, Sarah devoted her entire legal career to serving those in her community, first as a prosecutor, then as a criminal defense and family law attorney.

In 2016, Sarah earned her Board Certification of Legal Specialization in Criminal Law, an accomplishment held by less than 1 percent of all practicing attorneys in Texas. In addition, she’s proud to have been named a Super Lawyers Rising Star five years in a row. Rising Stars is an exclusive list of top-rated attorneys in specific practice areas who were chosen after a thorough evaluation of numerous criteria. In college, Sarah double-majored in philosophy, which she believes enhances the perspectives she’s able to merge into client situations. “Many law school classmates had to learn to think like a lawyer for the first time. brain was already trained to think about how to find a needle in a haystack and the five ways to get it out. I think that training helps me still automatically look at situations through different, beneficial lenses,” she adds. Part of how she and her team go about tailoring legal representation to each client’s needs is by applying outside-of-the-box concepts and being creative on a case-by-case basis. “In consults, we end with questions about clients’ biggest fears and biggest wants, so we can address those individual aspects. We often find that people are overwrought due to overdramatizations from television programs or what someone randomly has told them,” she reveals. As a native Texan, Sarah embodies famed Lone Star qualities: ‘Basically America, but turned up to 11.’ In fact, Sarah says she has three ancestors who were in the industrious, original ‘Old Three Hundred’ settlers of the Mexican Texas colony. “Nowhere else seems to compare to Texas. Anywhere you go here, it’s a small-town vibe, especially regarding how respectfully we treat each other. That courtesy extends throughout the local legal community as well,” she says. Although Sarah doesn’t have much time for hobbies, except for reading and running, she says she adores doing creative activities and crafts with her 8-year-old daughter, Vivienne. Her recent wedding also makes her smile with joy. Her favorite form of inspiration is music. She attended college on a scholarship for classical piano and currently is a lead vocalist for modern worship services at First United Methodist Church Plano. “Music is wonderful to draw from. I even created playlists to listen to before I go to trial,” she says. As 2022 draws to a close, Sarah says she’s extremely grateful for the trustworthy, client-focused and remote-based law firm she’s built with its happy ‘familial’ team and healthy work/life balance. The sense of family related to respect and kindness, both internally and for clients, is of utmost importance to her. “When I was able to launch my own firm, I wanted to address all the hurdles in the legal and business community that I personally was faced with when I came out of law school,” recalls Sarah. So, she says she was thrilled to be able to provide paid maternity/parental leave to an

employee this year. “We also conclude our work each week at 2 p.m., because some of our team have family members or locations in other Texan cities to get to on weekends. And we have team awards once a month. Firearm enthusiasts from around the area now have a new option with The Range in McKinney, McKinney’s first indoor shooting and training facility. Located at 415 Industrial Blvd, The Range in McKinney is designed for new and experienced shooters and offers a live-fire indoor range, a video simulator, education, personal and corporate events, and a firearm store. The Range in McKinney is the vision of Thom and Julie Beyer. Thom, a federally licensed firearms dealer, has been an avid shooter since he was eight years old, first learning about gun safety and how to shoot on his family’s property in Little Elm. Years later, Thom and Julie started planning to build their own range after noticing the lack of good customer service and quality local gun ranges. The Beyers traveled around the country visiting other gun range owners and learning from them. They decided they wanted to build a different kind of shooting range, one designed to make everyone feel at home. A range with great customer service, the best equipment available, and a family-friendly environment where men, women, and families interested in firearm instruction, safety, and proficiency could feel comfortable and learn about, practice, and enjoy the sport of shooting. “We wanted a family-friendly environment where both experienced and new shooters can shoot and train safely,” says Thom Beyer. “The Range in McKinney is a place where experienced shooters will feel comfortable, and novices won’t feel intimidated.” The Range in McKinney is open to the public and encompasses a 25,000-squarefoot space including 18 climate-controlled, 25-yard, lead-filtering shooting lanes with the industry’s best target handling systems, 3,000 square feet of retail space, and two multi-purpose classrooms where certified instructors will teach a variety of courses and provide private lessons. Extensive measures have been made throughout the building to adhere to noise and environmental requirements, including over 4 million pounds of concrete that envelope the live-fire ranges, acoustic baffles and doors, and hospital-grade air handling equipment which uses 100 percent fresh - never recirculated air. Training is important no matter how long someone has been a shooter. If someone is new to the sport of shooting, learning the proper grip, the right foot positioning, and how to properly lean into the shot are critical for success. If someone has been shooting for years they need to practice to avoid falling into any bad habits that one can pick up over time. With this in mind, The Range in McKinney has both men and women trainers teaching beginner to advanced classes including basic pistol, license to carry, all women classes, and tactical training. In addition, The Range in McKinney has a catering kitchen and an event planner to help host truly unique personal and corporate events, such as birthday and holiday parties, date nights, bachelor parties, sales, and team-building meetings. Over the last few years, there has been a fundamental shift in who goes to shooting ranges. It is no longer a predominately male sport. “This is not an old-school range,” says Julie Beyer. “We want both men and women as well as shooters and non-shooters to feel comfortable. Our goal is for The Range in McKinney to be an enjoyable experience for everyone who walks through our doors.”

From the moment one walks through the front door, The Range in McKinney is welcoming and inviting with flags honoring our veterans and first responders to reclaimed wood, stone, polished concrete, and quartz countertops. The retail space includes firearms displayed in the way electronics retailers display cellphones on top of tables instead of behind a counter, allowing customers to safely touch and hold the guns to become comfortable with their features without the pressure of a salesperson standing over them. The entire building is equipped with Wi-Fi and guests can take advantage of the social media wall to give a shout-out on their favorite social media platform. The Range in McKinney is the first private range in Texas to house a military simulator for civilian use. This reality-based simulator is used to train armed forces and law enforcement around the world with a 300-degree environment that can support up to five participants at one time. Ross Dental Studio in Prosper strives to bring confident, healthy smiles to each patient that walks through the doors. Newly opened in July, the studio is the vision of Dr. JaTerra Ross, offering dentistry that “rewrites the script of how people view going to the dentist.” “We provide our services with a humble heart, in a nonjudgmental, very compassionate manner,” says Dr. Ross. “We do our best to create a positive environment and strive to treat our patients like family.” Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Ross chose a career in dentistry to help eliminate the fear and anxiety that are often associated with going to the dentist. She earned her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from Southern Illinois University in 2009. After five years as a dental hygienist, Dr. Ross felt she could offer more to her patients and pursued her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and graduated cum laude from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in June 2019. Before moving to Texas last year, Dr. Ross was a dental associate in Missouri. Using her own experiences with dental anxiety, Dr. Ross says she’s created a place where patients feel safe and relaxed, and where pressure-free dentistry is combined with technology and artistry. Dr. Ross’s goal is to be known as the soothing dentist who supports her patients’ oral health goals while educating and guiding them on their path to a healthy lifestyle. She loves being able to talk to her patients and relate to their needs, oral health goals, and soothe their

dental fears so they can get the dentistry they need while feeling cared for and supported. Dr. Ross and her staff work hard to create a fun, positive work environment. She says they treat each patient like family and want to get to know and understand each patient’s needs. “I believe in putting patients first,” she adds. The studio is geared toward making patients feel comfortable. “The patient experience is everything,” she asserts. Soon the office also will offer warm towels and soft blankets. Ross Dental Studio’s services include preventative dentistry, restorative dentistry, emergency care and teeth whitening. Routine bi-annual dental exams and cleanings help Dr. Ross detect issues early, she says, so action can be taken, saving patients time, money and preventing larger dental issues. Even with excellent care, however, teeth and gums can be susceptible to disease, infection, cavities, cracks, or other forms of damage. This staff offers judgment-free care for patients with every dental need. Dr. Ross says she stays informed of the quickly evolving dental industry and the latest dental techniques through continuing education courses and is dedicated to learning and bringing the latest technology to her patients. Connecting Nonprofits, Community Residents, Businesses And Agencies By Providing Free Or Low-Cost Referrals

When tragedy strikes or difficult times hit hard, people often do not know where to turn for help. L.I.F.T. R&R helps serve and comfort people in need while connecting them with local nonprofit organizations and resources. In 2014, Rolanda Macharia’s husband of 19 years tragically died in a house fire. Everything Macharia and her family had was gone. With five children, Macharia had to flip to “go-mode” and plan a funeral, fill out and file mounds of paperwork, and find a place to live. She recalls being unable to find time to grieve and her 15-year-old daughter was struggling. Upon searching for resources to help her daughter and herself cope with their tragic loss, she found resources were not easy to find. Eventually, she found GriefShare for herself and Christian works at Camp Erin for her daughter, both of which were life-impacting and healing for their souls. “I thought to myself there was no reason why people shouldn’t know about these types of resources,” Rolanda remembers. “What if we could reach people and help them find healing, too.” In 2015, Rolanda launched LIFT, an outreach ministry at her church to help those grieving and in need. In 2019, L.I.F.T. R&R (Laboring In The Field Together Resources And Referrals) was founded as a nonprofit to offer expanded services to connect all available resources. The program’s mission is to provide resources and referrals to help make lives easier for those who are physically or emotionally struggling. L.I.F.T.

R&R partners with other nonprofit organizations, community partners, and state and local institutions that are offering resources to help others. Referral services are free. The program helps ensure visibility to nonprofit organizations with exposure across four social media platforms at no charge. Each year, the program gives out an unrestrictive $500 grant to two of its nonprofit organization partners. While Collin County is one of the wealthiest areas in Texas, community leaders indicate there are people seriously struggling. L.I.F.T. R&R hosts several events during the year, bringing resources to the community while collaborating and partnering with other nonprofit organizations. “The process from point A to point B is long, so how can we help bridge that time,” Rolanda poses. “Do we walk away, or do we ask ourselves how can we help? What can we do?” Throughout the year L.I.F.T. R&R collects new and gently used furniture, household decor and clothing. These items are then given to families in need at Another Man’s Treasure, an event held on McKinney’s Make A difference day. More than a dozen nonprofit organizations come and share their services with these families. L.I.F.T. R&R serves as a Toys for Tots distributor. In 2022, 400-plus Collin County children will benefit from the Toys for Tots distribution, helping them experience the joyous time of Christmas. CONTINUED >

Caring for the local elderly is an important mission. L.I.F.T. R&R supporters distribute free essential supply care kits to senior citizens at McKinney’s North Park Nursing Home in the spring and Christmas. These kits help provide dignity at no cost to the residents. Christmas distribution also includes a Christmas gift and goodies. Rolanda says helping people is part of her DNA. Her life’s mantra can be summed up with a line from Jana Stanfield: “I cannot do all the good that the world needs. But the world needs all the good that I can do.” L.I.F.T. PROSPER ROTARY CLUB FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN HONORS LOCAL VETERANS

Abraham Lincoln once stated: “A nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure.” The future Prosper Veterans Memorial Monument will serve as a gathering place to thank, honor and celebrate the lives of all who served the U.S. nation. The memorial is a demonstration of patriotism and creates a place of respect, pride and hope. Prosper Rotary Club members committed to raising the funds needed to construct the Prosper Veterans Memorial Monument. The cost of the construction and associated improvements is $450,000. The memorial will be located at Frontier Park. The site of the three-foot high six-point granite star base is the so-called “circle” in what many describe as the geographical center of the park. Organizers indicate that granite façade walls will display names of Prosper military service men and women, with an engraved paragraph honoring those Prosper service men and women who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and safety of American citizens. Park benches will allow a place for people to gather, reflect and honor those service members. Bronze plaques will feature the insignias of each military branch. Lighted flagpoles will encompass United States, POW and Texas flags. Decorative pavers and personalized bricks will fill the walking area. A portion of the profits from the Rotary Club’s annual flag program will go toward the memorial’s construction, approximately $25,000 a year. Local organizations, businesses, families and individuals can make donations of varying levels. Personalized brick donations will acknowledge a service member and his or her rank, awards, acknowledgments and recognitions. To date, the Prosper Rotary Club has pledges of just more than 50% of the group’s goal. Prosper Rotary club is a nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible.
