McKinney Adds Nearly A Dozen New Police Officers Welcome to the 11 newest members of the McKinney Police Department, sworn in by Chief Greg Conley and Assistant Chief Joe Ellenburg. Overall, the department typically operates with more than 235 sworn officer positions and about 75 non-sworn civilian positions. The Texas Police Chiefs Association (TPCA) awarded McKinney Police with "Recognition Status" in 2010, 2014 and 2018, and the department is up for re-recognition for 2022.

TexaKona Coffee Opens Music-Themed Shop In McKinney TexaKona Coffee Roasters staffers recently opened their music-themed coffee shop at the McKinney Flour Mill, with 107 drinks, a full food menu and a to-go fridge. From frosted lemonades to power refreshers to Americanos, head barista and co-owner Patrick Tate wanted to ensure they had it all. The drinks are all named after songs. For example, names include livin’ la vida mocha, espresso yourself, peachy young thing and sweet caramel Caroline.

It is estimated in the United States, about 11% of women and 9% of men of childbearing age have infertility. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, infertility is defined as when couples are unable to conceive after trying for at least a year. The CDC recommends that women over the age of 35 should be screened for infertility after six months, as egg quality and quantity decrease with time, significantly between the ages of 30 and 39. McKinney Education Foundation Supporters Still Assisting Graduating Students And Teachers

For three decades, McKinney Education Foundation staffers have dedicated themselves to offering opportunities to McKinney ISD students and staff. Originally formed to streamline scholarships in the McKinney community, the McKinney Education Foundation helps provide scholarships for graduating seniors, grants for teachers and staff, and a college advisor placement to offer guidance in navigating the college and scholarship application process for each of McKinney’s three high schools. Historically, the McKinney High School junior class parents raised money for the graduating seniors. Since this method varied in results, McKinney leaders in the late 1980s decided on a solution: the McKinney Education Foundation. In 1991, the McKinney Education Foundation was founded on scholarship distribution. An early goal was to support all graduating seniors of McKinney High School because that was the only high school at the time. As McKinney grew, foundation leaders quickly realized they wouldn’t be able to meet that goal. In 2004, to assist even more students than the McKinney Education Foundation could assist with scholarships, the College Advisor Program was created. The McKinney Education Foundation manages more than 100 endowments. These endowments help support graduating senior scholarships, McKinney ISD staff grants and the College Advisor Program. The Class of 2022 received $585,000 total in scholarship money to support post-secondary opportunities,

including four-year, two-year, and vocation/technical certifications and training. McKinney ISD classroom grants help enhance learning and professional development grants allow teachers and staff more educational opportunities outside the classroom. Each McKinney ISD high school is assigned a college advisor. The advisors work full-time to make sure students have access to higher education opportunities. Advisors work with students to match scholarships and navigate college and federal/state grant applications. The advisors also host multiple parent information nights annually. “The foundation’s most impactful program is the College Advisor Program,” says Ashley Sine, McKinney Education Foundation executive director. “The college advisors make higher education possible for so many McKinney ISD students every year. With our college advisors’ help, the Class of 2022 accepted more than $22 million in outside scholarship dollars, not including foundation scholarships or government grants.” McKinney Education Foundation is annually supported by the McKinney community. To help commemorate its 30 years, the McKinney Education Foundation will host a 30th Anniversary Gala on Nov. 12 at the Hyatt Regency in Frisco. Special guests are Laura W. Prosper Education Foundation Supports Variety Of District Goals

Prosper ISD is rapidly growing. Hiring and retaining teachers is clearly critical to a high-achieving academic district. Enhancing student opportunities is essential for them to learn, grow and develop to their full potential. That’s where the Prosper Education Foundation comes in to support and invest in academic excellence, innovation and achievement throughout the Prosper school district. “Support that the Prosper Education Foundation provides to Prosper ISD makes a big impact in the lives of students and Prosper ISD staff,” says Elizabeth Johnston, Prosper Education Foundation executive director. “There are real needs within a school district that only an education foundation can provide.” Providing scholarships for students supports their education and having college and career-ready students are vital to all. Prosper Education Foundation invests in Prosper ISD students with scholarship opportunities for a two-year and four-year college, trade school, technical certifications, dual credit courses and AP (Advanced Placement) exams. Prosper ISD also is dedicated to its special needs community. The foundation helps fund Special Olympics and the Family Resource Center, which equips teachers and families with ideas, tools and knowledge to help special needs students learn and develop. The Prosper community demands a top education for their children and expects the best. Prosper Education Foundation supporters say the group helps enrich and support important programs that enhance the education Prosper ISD students receive every day. Many of the student opportunities throughout the district could not be possible without funding from the foundation. The foundation invests in programs, such as Hope Squad, JROTC,

Incubator Ed, RISE, Project Graduation and the Student Leadership Summit. A foundation can make a difference to teachers who decide where to work and for how long. Prosper Education Foundation helps appreciate and recognize teachers for their exceptional work and dedication to student learning with Star Polisher and End of Year Awards. The foundation funds staff professional development initiatives to ensure Prosper ISD staff have the skills and knowledge to teach at their highest level and provides mentoring programs to appreciate the time senior teachers invest in the newest. Lastly, the foundation invests in hardworking teachers with grants and other classroom resources. Prosper Education Foundation receives its funding through financial donations from local businesses, individuals and community organizations, as well as funds raised through events, such as an annual golf tournament. For the 2022-2023 school year, the foundation plans to invest $682,400 into Prosper ISD students and staff. The annual Prosper Education Foundation Golf Tournament will be held on April 3, 2023. The tournament offers golfers the opportunity to play at Gentle Creek Golf Club, visit with Prosper ISD administration and foundation board members, network with other Prosper residents, and enjoy a day of friendly competition and fun. This signature event raises needed funds for Senior Scholarships for all Prosper ISD graduates. This past year, the Class of 2022 received $332,950 in scholarship funds. Burress Injury Law is a premier personal injury law firm with headquarters in McKinney and offices in Frisco, Paris and Sherman. The Burress Family Foundation is the charity arm started in 2022 to work hand in hand with Burress Injury Law to facilitate the firm’s community outreach, charitable giving and college scholarship program. Founder Jason K. Burress is a seventh-generation Texan, and has called Collin County home for 20 years. Burress Injury Law was started in McKinney 15 years ago and the Burress Family Foundation is also headquartered in McKinney. The Burress Family Foundation has two primary objectives: (1) to support deserving local nonprofits and local law enforcement who protect our communities; and (2) to provide college scholarships to deserving students. “As a community-based law firm, we love McKinney, Frisco and all of North Texas, and we’re honored to give back to our community and equally excited to grow our college scholarship program,” says Jason K. Burress. Historically, ManeGait was the flagship nonprofit that Burress Injury Law supported. More recently, the firm has supported Hugs Café and Love Life Foundation. ManeGait helps children and former military and first responders with serious disabilities and other injuries move beyond their boundaries through the healing power of the horse. Hugs Café provides meaningful training and competitively paid employment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Love Life Foundation brings awareness of the many tragedies inflicted upon children

and identifies supporting agencies and groups that bring relief and comfort to young victims and their families. Each year, Burress Injury Law hosts a community picnic for friends, colleagues, clients, vendors and staff benefiting local nonprofits. Burress Injury Law funds the picnic each year and 100% of all donations go to the organizations with a matching gift from the foundation. Over the past 11 years, approximately $305,000 has been given to local charities. The Burress Foundation recently made a three-year, minimum commitment of $100,000 to Love Life Foundation, the first year of which has been fully funded. The Burress Family Foundation is passionate about providing scholarships to college students who have persevered in the face of adversity and who want to use their life experiences to help others. Scholarships are open to undergraduate students throughout the U.S., and the awards can be applied to tuition and other educational expenses at each recipient’s school. In 2022, nine scholarships worth $27,000 were awarded. Applications for Spring 2023 Burress Family Foundation scholarships are due by Dec. 6, 2022. “Over two decades, our team has built an exceptional reputation for winning cases on behalf of victims of serious injuries and wrongful death. • Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. FRESH ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS & HARDWOOD SMOKED BACON Yield: 6 servings • 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil • ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced • 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin • 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice • Salt, pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted • Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped

METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional). 2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven. 4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes. 5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes. 6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute. 7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley. 9. Serve and enjoy!

According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”

If your gathering place is open to the elements then designate a spot indoors, such as a corner in your coat closet, to store your outdoor pillows and blanket on those dewy nights and rainy days. Then, you’ll always know where they are when it’s time to pull them out as friends come by. Here’s to building your own new memories with old front porch traditions!

RECIPE: WANT A QUICK SNACK, BUT IN THE MOOD FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT? ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES Add kick to traditional popcorn by incorporating herbs into a butter topping: The following buttery and savory flavor combination doesn't disappoint.

NE W, TA S T Y S P R INK L E INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons coconut oil (or olive oil if preferred) • 3/4 cup popcorn kernels • 5 tablespoons butter, melted • 2 teaspoons garlic salt • 2 teaspoons parsley (dried) • 1 teaspoon thyme

DIRECTIONS Add oil to the bottom of a pot and melt over medium heat. Add popcorn kernels and place lid on top of the pot and heat over medium heat until kernels are popped, shaking pan occasionally. Melt butter in a separate dish and add seasonings. Pour on top, and munch.
