OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Sponsored by Jon C. Thompson, MD

Tanner Call

McKinney High School

Leadership is a practical skill that must have come early to this outstanding defensive end for the Lions’ defensive end. Even before his senior year, coaches Nathan Collins and Sandy McCarty were saying it is like having a coach on the field. He is also an outstanding student, being named to the District’s 1st Team Aacademics in both his sophomore and junior years. Tanner Call is a young man who describes himself as a “patriot”, thus his desire to go to one of the service academies, settling on signing with the Naval Academy, where he will play after his senior year in McKinney. Yes, he knows he will have to shear off his current mullet haircut, which he has adorned since the playoffs in his sophomore year. But the character of this young man shines brightly as he tells how, when it is cut off, he plans on auctioning the locks off for some lucky local charity. “Getting to the QB” is Tanner’s favorite thing to do and attributes his skill as being due to his ability to concentrate on and perfect the techniques taught by the coaches. Of course, his size, 6’4” and a very fit 230#, help. His obviously proud parents, Todd and Denise, laugh as they talk about how Tanner converted their garage into his own gym. Tanner claims he even relishes the two-a-day practices as he simply loves the game and wants to continue to improve and learn. He also likes to push himself to increase both his mental and physical capabilities. His coaches call Tanner a “technician”due to this mentality. Those characteristics obviously helped him earn MVP in spring ball as a freshman on the varsity team!

signature signal, which is to raise his hand and fingers as if holding a phone and wiggle them to indicate that he was “answering the call”. Tanner committed to the Naval Academy due to the connections he felt there. He had also been sought by the Air Force, Army, and University of New Mexico. His favorite class is history, smiling about it as he had landed in his Mom’s class in the 5th grade. At the Naval Academy he plans on pursuing an engineering degree while also focusing on languages, specifically Mandarin Chinese. His athleticism and mullet hair style probably also serve him well as he is also an avid country style dancer.

As Tanner enters his senior year, he is going to be playing on both sides of the football. He will be both tight end as well as defensive end. This probably results from a play in which he easily evaded the defensive back in a game this past season and scoring a touchdown. At the demands of his coaches, but the chagrin of his mom, he spiked the ball. He also probably performed his unique,

Tanner’s parents are also very athletic, even playing in an probably results from a play in which he easily evaded the defensive back adult volleyball league. His older brother, Logan, is a SR at Texas A&M. Rounding out the family is a german shephard, Dixie.

K THE STYLE OF LOVE TREND SETTER

AND KINDNESS BORN OF THE LOVE OFFERED AT LOVE LIFE

THE BEAUTY OF LIFE AND LOVE IS TRULY CELEBRATED IN THIS LITTLE SHOP THAT NOT ONLY OFFERS GREAT PRODUCTS BUT ALSO PROVIDES FOR THOSE IN NEED. You will definitely feel love upon entering and it will be hard to leave without a smile. If you have ever met Maylee Thomas Fuller, you probably realized that the hugs she so generously offers are genuine and her smile and style tend to make you want to learn more about her “hippie” inspired lifestyle. But the main thing you need to know is that she is a genuine American Beauty, inside and out. And if you ever attend one of their band’s concerts you will see her passion for life and love as she connects with her audience both in her words and emotion. You can also join Maylee’s podcast at https://texashomegrownmusic .podbean.com/ to enjoy great music and more! She and her guitar-slinging husband, Mayor George Fuller, have always been committed to giving back to the community, and do so in a plethora of ways. One of the most impressive means is through a gem of a boutique located inside The Guitar Sanctuary on the north side in

McKinney’s

developed to bring exposure to help their non-profit, the Love Life Foundation, whose mission statement is to spread love and hope to the at-risk in the community by partnering with local agencies to provide valuable aid and support.

The “Love Life Family” continues to grow and Maylee and George are especially grateful for the overwhelming response from so many dedicated volunteers, many of who have been serving for decades as they get ready to enter into their 30th year of operation. Visit www.lovelifefoundation.com to learn how you can help, or as Maylee says, “Learn the real joy in giving”. Maylee’s favorite quote is “love life”— you get out of it what you put into it”. For some it’s time, others it’s talent, and, of course, finances too. She is in strong support of many organizations and hopes that everyone would find somewhere to become involved where they have a passion for a cause. The latest theme to come out of this loving organization is the McKinney Kind initiative. Anyone that knows Maylee is

Maylee Thomas-Fuller

not surprised at the peace sign design since she’s been throwing it out there her whole life. Maylee beams with pride as she mentions how many of the McKinney Kind peace signs adorn cars, yards, t-shirts, and even some buildings around McKinney. Ironically, it was a positive answer to a rather mean use of a photo of her giving the peace sign that partially inspired this initiative to remind us all, especially in these times of divisiveness, that we just need to be kind to one another. Maylee adds, “If we would all use the Golden Rule we were taught as children we really can make this world a more loving environment. It’s not a cliche for me, it’s a purposeful practice of daily life”. All proceeds from the McKinney Kind merchandise are going directly to the Community Lifeline Center to support this long-standing organization that does so much for the less fortunate and the food insecure. The Love Life Market manager, Glenda Howard, likes to state the shop is “gift ready” and has something for everyone. Whether you buy a piece of clothing, one of the beautiful, artistic pieces of jewelry, or a variety of gift items, they have everything you need from the gift card to the packaging for you to be able to go in and leave ready for the party. Glenda laughs when she talks about how she became involved with Maylee and the Love Life Foundation. She was looking for the next step in her life when she happened upon a tent set up in a Walgreen’s parking lot. Curiosity drove her to that tent where she met Maylee and had her

first taste of what this fantastic organization is all about. Glenda smiles as she says, “Seven years later, Maylee still refers to me as her “Walgreens Girl”! Visit the Love Life Market and “shop for a cause”, located inside The Guitar Sanctuary at 6633 Virginia Parkway, McKinney and open Tuesday–Saturday from 10:00am-6:00pm. All clothing and accessories the ladies are modeling are from the Love Life Market. Drop in and see all the wonderful, beautiful, and fun items at the quaint store in The Guitar Sanctuary -- and SHOP WITH A PURPOSE!
