Lifestyle Letter WELL, IT HAS BEEN A TYPICALLY HOT SUMMER IN NORTH TEXAS. The adage is "If you don't like the weather, just wait a few hours and it will change". Where were the changes down into the 70's? But we guess that was wishful thinking. We hope you found some relief from the heat this summer in a pool, a lake, or, as

for changes, not just in the weather, but kids going back to school, which means quieter houses as many of us stay at home to work now. And of course... football! So, as you head out to buy school supplies and new clothes for your kids, just try and remember that it seems we, all of us, have endured through a once-in-a-century pandemic. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who had friends or family who succumbed to the terrible disease. Hopefully, the number of cases and deaths will continue to decline as we approach the Fall and Winter and all the wonderful holidays we look forward to each year.

OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Sponsored by Jon C. Thompson, MD

Mya Mannka

Having grown up with an older sister and cousin in gymnastics, the sport was never foreign to Mya Mannka. She entered preschool classes as soon as she was eligible, around four years old. Being extremely active from an early age, Mya enjoyed various sports, including hockey, flag football and BMX racing, while not being limited to ballet, softball, and soccer. Mya says, “Gymnastics was the only sport I ever came back to for more. I think this is because the sport is so challenging that there is no way for it to get boring. There is always more that you can learn or more you can perfect. As a little kid, I can remember my eyes being glued to the older girls in the gyms, and I love having the opportunity to now be that older girl that the little ones are watching. I can remember what it was like to be in their shoes and I want to leave a positive impression on as many people as possible.” Mya has found the sport not just challenging but rewarding as well. “Pushing past the boundaries of what I thought possible for myself has taught me that I should never limit myself.” Consistently competing in the sport of trampoline and tumbling for the past five and a half years, the owner of her gym, Eagle’s Wings Athletics, saw potential in her and convinced her to try the T&T team. Less than six months later she competed in her first meet. She advanced from Level 7 to Level 10 within three years. She has been able to compete and rank at the state, regional, and national level. This past season she became the state champion on double mini trampoline and placed second on tumbling at a national qualifying meet in Ohio. She has signed onto the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Acrobatics and Tumbling team on the Dean’s scholarship, as well as a scholarship from the Prosper Ladies Foundation and another from USA Gymnastics Region 3.

There she will be studying pre-physical therapy and plans to get a PhD in PT saying, “With this degree I hope that I am one day able to become a team doctor of sorts and work with athletes on keeping them healthy and able to compete in their sport.” Mya comes from an athletic family of six. Her dad played football and baseball and her mom was in the Army. Her sister, Morgan, did gymnastics and the other, Rae, was a swimmer, and younger brother, Maddox, plays hockey for the Dallas Stars Elite. The family includes two rescue dogs, Mimi and Moose, who are as spoiled as can be. In the little time she has away from gymnastics, she enjoys CrossFit, spending lots of time outdoors, and trying new things when given the chance. Congrats, Mya!

QUALITY, SCOPE, AND INGENUITY OF DESIGN OF THIS GREAT COMPANY, WHICH HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS SINCE 1985. Then, when you meet the founder and CEO, Chris Strempeck, you will understand how this company has become a leader servicing both residential and commercial clients in North Texas and Oklahoma in not just landscape, but truly, as the name suggests, landsculpture. Chris started in the industry mowing lawns for neighbors

in the summer to help keep in shape for football season. He then worked part time for nurseries and landscape companies while attending a military academy in Arkansas and then while studying Real Estate and Finance at UNT. He started his business with the goal of exceeding expectations of his clients. Fully insured, Certified & Quality Professionals, the company offers a complete experience. Their expertise is supported by the professionals they hire as designers, consultants, irrigators, arborists, general contractors, project managers, installers & maintenance specialists. The experience they offer is complete in every way, from design, installation, and construction, to maintenance and management. As Chris says, “We are a unified source”. Reviews show you can depend on Complete regardless of the size of project before, during and after your project, which is why their clients seem to be fanatical about them. The process with Complete Landsculpture begins with an interview, possibly in their extensive showroom, to discuss and prioritize each aspect of your project. They listen to their client to figure out what priorities they have and then set expectations of the budget so that you can be assured you don’t get halfway through a large project and think, “Oh, we didn’t realize it would cost that much to do all of this”. Once the project is agreed to, the designers make sure that forethought is put in place to make sure that as you progress through additional components of your overall design, they all come together without a hitch. Gene Freeman is the Vice President and co-owner of Complete Landsculpture with nearly 30 years in the industry. He is responsible for developing a strong team atmosphere which allows Complete Landsculpture to continuously deliver great service. His cohesive efforts with Chris bring new and creative ideas that improve the company’s efficiency, quality, and originality. Gene agrees that exceeding expectations is a main goal for the company and gets more inspired with each project he completes. He and Chris also agree that building an excellent, rewarding company culture promotes good opportunities as well as the incentive to produce excellence in their work.

WATER & WOODS (CONTINUED)

The company certainly does more than landscape, enhancing people’s lives with their outdoor living designs and pools, which they added 23 years ago. Their personnel will work closely to make sure that the results match, or exceed, your vision in its beauty, elegance and structure. We all recognize the added beauty that trees offer, but the Texas weather can take a toll on them. The company has three ISA certified arborists and Chris is especially proud of what they do for trees and shrubs for your home or business. The arborists realize each tree has its own individual needs and conditions and have the training and skills to assure those are met. Proper inspection and maintenance programs offer tree trimming, treatments, cabling, air-spading, or a tree fertilization program specific to your tree and soil. They are designed to help you enjoy you’re the beauty and shade offered by your trees for years to come. You will find that Complete Landsculptures are problem solvers offering much more than a sales pitch to get your business. Their many accolades prove how well they have performed over the years: + Greater Dallas Business Ethics Award 2014 Winner + Texas Home & Gardens - Golden Commercial Developer (4 years) + DFW Consumers’ Choice Award - Commercial Landscape & Architecture (2 years) + Home Association of America - Residential Design of the Year + Turner Construction - Subcontractor of the Year (2 years) + Dallas Top 100 - SMU Cox School of Business + D Home & Garden Magazine - Best All-Around Landscaper (2 years) + Associated Builders & Contractors - Excellence in Construction (3 years) + The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals Gold, SIlver, and Merits Award +

We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Many children may
