OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Sponsored by Jon C. Thompson, MD

Kinsey Kackley | McKinney Boyd HS Teams usually pick their Captains based on their leadership skills as well as their athletic prowess. When you meet Hallie Collett, you are not surprised she has been the Captain of both McKinney North’s track and volleyball teams for her Junior and Senior years! Besides that, Hallie was awarded the coveted title of “Bulldog of the Year” as both a Junior and a Senior for the volleyball team. (Think “VIP” status!) In volleyball, Hallie plays all 6 rotations, which means she rotates through each position allowing her to play the entire game, which she obviously loves as she also plays for Club Team Excel in a competitive league outside of school. As Captain, she helped lead the Bulldogs (23-4, 12-2) to the UIL Class 5A Volleyball State Championship Regional Finals, which is the furthest the team has ever made it in the playoffs She placed on the 2nd Team All-District in her sophomore year and 1st Team in both her Junior and Senior years. In track, the Long Jump and Triple Jump events are her forte. This year Hallie finished 3rd at the district track meet in the triple jump and set a new personal record on her final attempt. Her parents beamed as they stated Hallie was Academic All-State, not just for Track, but Volleyball as well— and for all 4 years. Hallie’s mother, Tiffany, had been a track star as well, having placed 3rd in her district in high school. While both her parents were Red Raiders and her 21-year old brother is at Texas Tech studying marketing, Hallie is going to attend TCU on a Dean’s Academic Scholarship where she plans on studying Business and Marketing, while also emphasizing Sports Management.

Hallie has decided not to pursue athletics in college, but we will surely see Hallie on the sidelines of some major sporting events in the future in some prominent role. She claims math as her best and favorite subject and is in an AP Calculus class. History seems to be her least favorite class. Which seems to be a common thread among our student/athletes so far. Hallie is not just an outstanding student/athlete, but citizen as well. A McKinney City Council member honored Hallie with a City Council Commendation speaking to this young lady’s wellrounded personality. Besides her athletic and school endeavors, Hallie enjoys painting, photography, working out, and hanging with friends, which includes their rescue dogs, Tess and Maple, a red healer akita mix and black lab mix.

Humanitarianism is a core value taught at Ovation Academy. They believe that philanthropy is a vital part of creating a stable community. Through volunteer service, students gain empathy and life lessons, which cannot be taught in the classroom. In 2019 Ovation Academy was nominated for the “Inspire to Serve Award” by Volunteer McKinney. Additionally, their progressive THERE

Guest Artists and Master Instructors teach the industry beyond the artistry. One major component to this ground-breaking program that enables their success is Ovation’s commitment to the concept of “community”. If you are expecting an episode of Dance Moms to be played out at Ovation Academy you will be disappointed. Ovation Academy does not allow for the stereotypical “diva and stage mom”. There are strict rules in place for both students and parents about refraining from negativity and criticism. According to Alumni Musical Theatre Major Brandon Carty, “For once, I felt safe to be myself and trust those around me full-heartedly”. Mr. Carty is now attending Pace University in New York City as a Directing Major. Their philosophy teaches that the performing arts are a community, not a competition. Although Ovation Academy has a strong reputation for dominating in competitions; they stress the importance of supporting all artists. Students at Ovation are strongly encouraged to participate in classes, competitions, and productions outside of school in addition

ZAE ROMEO A 21-YEAR-OLD FROM PROSPER AND MCKINNEY, TEXAS EARNED A 4-CHAIR TURN ON NBC’S “THE VOICE” AFTER SINGING A COVER OF FALLING BY HARRY STYLES. Growing up in the foster care system, Romeo was adopted along with his siblings. After watching his brother get into music, he also took interest. “Around 10 or 11, I sang ‘We Three Kings’, of which I sang a tiny verse at church and I was super nervous,” he said.

“Harry Styles was a song I could sing and talk about the emotion behind it and how I could connect to the song,” he said. Romeo said he was nervous but not nervous when performing on stage just moments before getting all four coaches to turn around--he was already on the show. “I was thinking, ‘This is so bad no one is going to turn’.
