Donuts With Superheroes Love Life Foundation's annual back to school event, Donuts With Superheroes! This was a free community event where families enjoyed donuts with our famous superheroes and took some great pics with our City's finest! There was a Backpack Drive station set up so families could drop off donations of school supplies for economically disadvantaged students in our community.

Tacos With Cops The community came together alongside the McKinney police for a night of food, music and family fun. The turnout was amazing! There was dancing, a mechanical bull, and bounce houses. KingKups served over 600 tacos. Overall, it was a perfect night for our city! This is what community should look like...well done, McKinney!

OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Sponsored by Jon C. Thompson, MD

Jacob Devenny

Prosper High School

When you meet someone who chooses which athletic scholarship they want to accept based on the academic quality of the school, you know you have met a special individual. Rice University is such a school and that is the school for which Prosper senior, Jacob Devenny, has decided to play baseball. Lucky Rice! While Jacob played football until his senior year, plus basketball through middle school, his love for the mental aspect of baseball is what made him decide to focus on this sport. Baseball is not only known for its strategic moves made by the coaches, but, even more importantly, the awareness of the player to make the right, split second decision. Baseball players have to know how to react when a ball should come their way and know to which position they should throw the ball according to variables such as the number of outs, the positions of runners on base, how speedy the opponent is known to be, and more. Jacob’s obvious acute mind allows him to calculate those very well. Jacob is an outstanding outfielder, preferring the left field position because of his ability to anticipate the bounces off Prosper High’s “Green Monster” wall. But it may be his hitting prowess, averaging around .350, that has earned his status as 1st Team All-District and 2ND Team All-Area, which is elected by coaches in the area. While not known as a “home run king”, Jacob is known for his ability to create RBIs abundantly due to his propensity to hit doubles and triples. He has learned the game very well and attributes that to a couple of his coaches, Scott Holder of Prosper High and Chad Polk, his summer league coach of The Dallas Tigers.

just an outstanding athlete, but outstanding student as well, chose Jacob.

With his favorite subjects at Prosper High being math and science, it is no surprise to learn he will take on courses for a dual major in math and biochemistry. His high ranking, in the top 2% of his class, speaks to his academic prowess. No wonder Coach Holder, when asked to recommend not

The family is rounded out with Jacob’s younger brother, Parker, 15, who is a freshman playing football at Prosper High School, and Eden, 13, a cheerleader at Rogers Middle School.

Jacob’s parents were athletically inclined themselves. His family included high level golfers and baseball players. His father, Mike, played football and baseball. His mother, Jessica, was a gymnast and cheerleader— and if you have watched any cheerleading competitions, you know just how athletic they are.

T r avel R ecom mend at ion s for Food ies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” In addition to travels, Dennis is a huge advocate for supporting local businesses and the connection grilling in your own backyard can make. “Grilling is inherently communal. You talk to your neighbors, they smell it, they ask you what you’re cooking; the whole act of it is a community. One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start?’ Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.” CityLifestyle.com/McKinneyandProsper
