What are you thankful for this year? When we look around, we have so many reasons to count our blessings. One area is economic growth. A CoworkingCafe's study, "Rising Powerhouses: The Cities Making America’s Economic Future," compared economic data across 269 U.S. cities from 2019-2023. Out of the 188 U.S. cities analyzed in the small city ranking, five Dallas-Fort Worth cities earned spots among the top 50: Lewisville (No. 11), Denton (No. 23), McKinney (No. 29), Frisco (No. 32) and Mesquite (No. 46).
This month, we hope your home is filled with the aroma of freshly baked pies, the sounds of laughter around the table and the feeling of gratitude in your hearts.
As always, thanks for reading, and rest assured that we appreciate you.

Local Program Unites Donors, Schools To Provide Gifts, Essentials, Joy For McKinney ISD Children And Families In Need
ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS
Holidays can be a stressful time for families struggling to meet basic needs. The Love Life Foundation’s Angel Tree program helps ease that burden by connecting generous community members with McKinney ISD children who might otherwise go without gifts. Donors select an “angel” from the tree to fulfill their wishes or make a monetary donation for Love Life to fulfill the wishes of unselected angels, ensuring a brighter holiday season.
Julie Williams, co-owner of Texas Property Sisters, has been a longtime Angel Tree supporter. “My business partner, Monica, and I have participated in donating to the Love Life Angel Tree for many years now,” she says. “We typically purchase for a bunch of the kids as well as recruit others in our area to participate. We like to focus on selecting a whole family or two to make sure that all the kids in that family are taken care of.”
Julie appreciates how local the effort is. “The program is a wonderful way to help families in McKinney ISD who need help in fulfilling their children’s wants and needs. We love that it’s local McKinney families being supported,” she explains.
Community members can easily sign up to help. When the holiday season approaches, Love Life Foundation posts information on their website, social media and at the Love Life Market inside the Guitar Sanctuary in McKinney. “You just go to a website and pick which child or family you want to buy for. It lists their wishes, needs and sizes,” Julie explains.
For McKinney ISD liaison Wanda Johnson, the Angel Tree program is a vital resource. She says, “Since 2011, I’ve been a

community liaison for two middle schools in McKinney ISD, working directly with underserved students and families who need assistance at Christmas and throughout the school year.”
Wanda explains that the program primarily benefits single-parent households or families facing sudden hardship. Love Life representatives work with school counselors and administrators to identify children in need. “MISD and Love Life Christmas Angel Tree have had a long-lasting partnership working together to help our families during tough times,” she adds.
According to AJ Micheletto, marketing director at Love Life Foundation, the Love Life Foundation is the only local agency whose Angel Drive specifically supports MISD middle school children and their families.
“Each year, the program serves more than 300 children, an effort valued at approximately $75,000,” shares AJ. “Typically, the community adopts about one-third of these children, and the Love Life Foundation ensures that the remaining children are supported through monetary donations and fundraising efforts.”
For families who want to become recipients, information is distributed directly through MISD.
Programs such as Angel Tree do more than provide gifts. They build community spirit. “Helping our neighbors is important for our community to stay strong and be a great place to live,” Julie says.
“The Love Life Angel Tree program is a great way to do that.”
Wanda agrees, noting how the program “provides new clothes, shoes, toys and necessities for children in need during the holiday season. It helps alleviate financial stress for parents who struggle to provide gifts and offers the community a meaningful way to give back.”

In the heart of McKinney, a movement is reshaping how small- and mid-sized nonprofits achieve their goals. Gather’s Vision, founded by Darrell Barnes, is dedicated to empowering the nonprofit community of Collin County by providing access to venues, resources and collaborative opportunities that help organizations thrive.
“We ensure that nonprofits can focus their resources on what truly matters: fulfilling their missions and driving meaningful change,” Darrell says. “When nonprofits thrive, our entire community prospers.”
Gather’s Vision was specifically created to serve smaller organizations that may lack the budget or staff to plan major fundraisers or awareness campaigns. These nonprofits work across a variety of causes, including education, housing, youth mentorship, senior support, food insecurity and special needs advocacy.
Yet, Darrell says many struggle to find affordable, professional spaces to host events or connect with donors. “Our goal is to amplify their impact by giving them access to a professional, welcoming space and the resources they need to thrive,” he explains.
The organization’s roots lie in Darrell’s experience running the original Gather venue in Downtown McKinney. Over the years, the venue became a gathering place for local nonprofits hosting events such as Boots & Boogie, Bingo on the Square and numerous community galas.
ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS
“Time and again, we saw that when nonprofits had a beautiful space to gather people, they could tell their story in a more powerful way and raise significantly more funds. With the right support, one event could completely change the trajectory of a nonprofit’s year,” Darrell says.
This realization led to the creation of Gather’s Vision, a mission-driven extension of the original space. More than just a building, the Gather venue itself plays a key role in supporting nonprofit missions. With historic charm, exposed brick, chandeliers and a prime location on the McKinney Square, it creates an elevated backdrop for storytelling and connection.
“Beyond aesthetics, we offer logistical support, event coordination and connections with trusted vendors, allowing nonprofits to focus on their cause while we handle the details,” Darrell adds.
Gather’s Vision also partners with other local venues to host nonprofit events, ensuring flexibility and expanded reach.

Funding for Gather’s Vision comes from a network of corporate sponsors, individual donors and community partners who see their contributions as an investment in impact. “A $1,000 donation doesn’t just cover event costs, it can lead to a $5,000 fundraiser for a nonprofit,” Darrell explains. “That ‘1+1=3’ effect is what excites our supporters.”
Sponsorship tiers allow businesses and individuals to contribute at various levels, creating a sustainable model for the future.
The results are already visible. According to Darrell, nonprofits using Gather’s Vision report raising more money, engaging new sponsors and collaborating with one another in ways that weren’t possible before. Events, such as the McKinney Fashion Show and Boots & Boogie, have

brought together nonprofits, businesses and community leaders, leading to joint projects and long-term partnerships. The organization is also preparing to launch CHOICE (Consider How One Idea Changes Everything), a program pairing 12 nonprofits with 12 sponsors to host four fundraising events each in 2026.
Looking ahead, Darrell envisions expanding the organization’s reach by hosting monthly nonprofit events ranging from board meetings to formal galas, launching leadership workshops and growing the sponsorship network. He says, “Ultimately, we see Gather’s Vision becoming the go-to hub for nonprofit collaboration in Collin County. We’re building a stronger nonprofit ecosystem that will ripple across the entire community.”

MCKINNEY-BASED SOSTENUTO CHOIR ENSEMBLE BLENDS ARTISTRY, FELLOWSHIP, HEARTFELT PERFORMANCES

We seek to sustain our members and listeners in song.
~Cindy Johnston, Sostenuto artistic director.
Sostenuto Choral Community of North Texas members are far more than a traditional choir. Founded in McKinney by retired educator Cindy Johnston, the group welcomes singers from their 20s through their 80s, uniting volunteers from diverse backgrounds who share a love of music. Meeting Monday evenings for two-hour rehearsals at First McKinney, the ensemble provides what Cindy calls “a family of singers who combine to support each other through life’s changes and challenges.”
Sostenuto’s mission is to “inspire, educate and support a community of individual singers into one united voice.” Its name, an Italian musical term meaning sustained and steady, reflects both the choir’s sound and its spirit. “We seek to sustain our members and listeners in song,” Cindy explains. “Heartfelt performances and weekly rehearsals offer fellowship and friendship.”
Cindy, who taught in McKinney ISD for 23 years, launched the group in early 2020 with her son, Seth, after recognizing a need for high-level choral music in the community. Their timing was challenging. COVID19 forced a pause just weeks after rehearsals began but Sostenuto returned in 2021. “Successfully restarting the choir after Covid is a testament to the resiliency of our members. They so wanted to make this choir thing happen,” Cindy says.
Membership spans all levels of vocal experience, from those who never sang in school to trained professionals. Some are MISD alumni while others are new to Collin County. Cindy says she hopes to welcome more high school students, particularly homeschoolers. Placement is available for interested singers, with semester fees to offset sheet music and rental space costs. Financial aid and student discounts are offered for those who qualify.
Sostenuto receives partial funding from the City of McKinney through grants of the McKinney Arts Commission and the McKinney Community Development Corporation, with most remaining costs covered by donations from businesses and individuals.
“Community support truly makes what we do possible. Those grants and donations allow us to keep bringing high-quality choral music to North Texas,” Cindy assures.
Sostenuto performs a wide range of repertoire each semester. Its Christmas concerts, such as “Gloria” in 2023 featuring John Rutter’s Gloria , combine sacred and secular works, while spring concerts explore themes from folk traditions to celestial poetry. This past May’s program, Heartland: Songs of Life, will feature Z. Randall Stroope’s American Rhapsody and pieces celebrating life in community.
Community outreach is woven into Sostenuto’s identity. The group partners with the McKinney Armed Services Memorial Board for its annual Veterans Day Ceremony, offers free attendance for Samaritan Inn residents and hosts food drives. Cindy reflects on one of her favorite Veterans Day moments, saying, “Watching veterans rise as their branch’s anthem plays during our medley is profoundly moving.”
The choir’s upcoming Winter Solstice concert, set for Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at First McKinney, will feature seasonal favorites such as Let It Snow and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.
Cindy says Sostenuto’s impact is best captured by its audiences. Kristen Barnes, a local community member, wrote after a recent concert: “Your most recent choral concert was truly an emotional and moving event.” For Cindy, such feedback affirms the choir’s purpose.
“People often tell us they wish they knew about us sooner,” shares Cindy.

An immersive winter wonderland of ice sculptures, ice slides and scenes from the holiday hit Elf, ICE! is masterfully crafted by 40
expert artisans from Harbin, China. Following a 300-page design book filled with sketches and blueprints to sculpt each individual piece — some as small as a coin and others nearly 30 feet tall — the artisans work for six weeks to create the 20,000-square-foot attraction. They use chisels, chippers, tongs, handsaws, grinders and even chainsaws to bring the experience to life.
This holiday spectacle takes guests on a frosty journey from the North Pole to New York City as they explore a winter wonderland carved from more than 2 million pounds of ice, where Buddy’s hysterical hijinks are brought to life in stunning, frozen detail.
To preserve the frozen sculptures, Gaylord Texan maintains a state-of-the-art chilling system, but there’s no need to pack coats (scarves, gloves and extra apparel are suggested for those who tend to get cold). Even though it’s cool inside, the resort provides parkas to keep guests warm as they zoom down ice slides, marvel at largerthan-life displays and wander through the arctic attraction.

Beyond ICE! featuring Elf, Gaylord Texan Resort offers a winter wonderland of more than 10 festive activities for the whole family.
Brave the six-lane ice tubing hill for a thrilling ride, craft and decorate gingerbread creations, grab a tub of real snow and build and launch snowballs, or step inside Santa’s workshop to meet the man in red himself. Little ones will love taking a spin on the Christmas Carousel, while parents will appreciate all the opportunities for the perfect holiday photo.
For a mesmerizing performance the whole family will love, grab seats for Cirque: Frost, an original Gaylord Hotels’ production that dazzles with high-flying stunts, breathtaking feats and the heartwarming story of a dreamer who brings enchantment and wonder to the world.
After a day filled with Christmas cheer, linger a little longer over an exceptional meal. At Old Hickory Steakhouse, savor timeless cuts in an elegant setting. Zeppole invites diners to enjoy Italian favorites in its newly renovated space, while Riverwalk Cantina tempts with bold Tex-Mex flavors and festive surroundings. As the day winds down, enjoy an evening stroll through the glowing, glittering atrium.

How To Decorate Tables With Noteworthy November Flair
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
Whether traditional or modern, formal or fussfree, Thanksgiving centerpieces set a memorable ambiance for November gatherings.

• An old dough bowl or wood trencher makes a great low centerpiece when filled with seasonal pumpkins, gourds, pinecones and flowering branches.
• Fill a stoneware sugar bowl with seeded eucalyptus, chrysanthemums and pears.
• Use one or a nest of baskets, floral foam and some blooms to craft a themed stunner.
• Incorporate family heirlooms by using an inherited (or thrifted) antique teapot, surrounded by other vintage finds.
• Stack two cake plates on top of each other with bite-size edibles; add other, shorter floral arrangements in pitchers or vases, if desired.
• Add soft candlelight with rustic textures of wood and lots of fall color via an assortment of fresh and faux gourds, silk sunflowers and dried seed pods.

Make an edible bread cornucopia, ‘horn of plenty,’ for the Thanksgiving table using refrigerated bread or pizza dough, a plastic bottle mold and aluminum foil. Wrap the bottle with foil, make a tail at one end and then layer adjoining strips of dough on the foil. Brush cornucopia with melted butter, remove the plastic bottle and bake at 350 F for 25 to 30 minutes on the lower rack, or until it turns a golden, shiny brown. Fill with sweet or savory nibbles, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, gourds, nuts, rosemary breadstick twists or even cookies, for an impressive centerpiece that’ll keep guests happily munching while they wait for the main meal to begin.

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
