LIFESTYLE LETTER

Intentional Living for the New Year The start of a new year is often filled with excitement and a sense of renewal. It’s a time to set new goals, embrace fresh opportunities, and dream about the year ahead. For many, though, January can also bring a sense of pressure—a reminder of resolutions left unfulfilled or the weight of expectations. This issue of McKinney + Prosper Lifestyle was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for longterm, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health, or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s what you do most of the time. Consider this: you wouldn’t go on vacation every day, but planning a couple of trips each year is a realistic and restorative goal. Similarly, indulging in a rich dessert isn’t an everyday event, but it’s a delicious treat now and then. This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Join a fitness class, carve out moments for rest, and don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year—we’re rooting for you!

Healing Beyond Traditional Psychotherapy Methods Marci Patton combines evidence-based therapy with spirituality to guide clients toward meaningful recovery. When Marci Patton, LPC, founder of Ketagenics Psychotherapy, looks back on how her practice began, she starts with a season of major personal change. “About a decade ago, I was in my first year of substance-use recovery,” she explains. “Even though my life was full of accomplishments, multiple degrees, marriage, children, and a thriving real estate career, I felt an unmistakable emptiness.” What restored her sense of purpose wasn’t success, but service. “The place where I felt the most hope wasn’t in any of those achievements, but in the evenings I spent volunteering at Celebrate Recovery,” she says. “Supporting others who were walking a road I knew so well ignited a sense of purpose in me that I couldn’t ignore.” That clarity, and what she describes as God’s prompting, led her back to school to pursue counseling. When Marci and her family moved from Washington to Texas in 2022, she launched her own practice, eventually discovering the therapeutic potential of ketamine when integrated with trauma-informed approaches. “Founding Ketagenics Psychotherapy became the natural next step,” she says. “An integration of my redemption story, my passion for helping individuals encounter God in their healing, and my belief in the transformative potential of ketamine-assisted work.”

What sets Ketagenics apart, Marci notes, is how ketamine is used within therapy. Not before or after. “In most settings today, ketamine is administered at a clinic and then therapy is scheduled separately,” she explains. “Important material can be lost in the gap.” Her vision is different. Low-dose sessions that allow clients to remain present, verbal, grounded, and capable of engaging in EMDR during the dosing experience itself. “At these low, therapeutic levels, ketamine gently reduces defenses without overwhelming the client,” she says. It creates a window where traumatic material can be accessed with more clarity and less fear. Marci blends EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and ketamine-assisted therapy to create a spiritually aligned, multifaceted approach. EMDR reprocesses traumatic memories. IFS helps clients understand and nurture the protective “parts” that formed in response to pain. Ketamine increases neuroplasticity and softens emotional barriers so deeper work can occur.

“Because clients stay communicative and spiritually present, we can weave EMDR and IFS directly into the dosing session,” Marci says. “It makes the work more fluid, less overwhelming, and often profoundly meaningful.” For Marci, healing is inseparable from spirituality. “I believe God created each person with intention, purpose, and identity,” she says. Insights that arise in therapy are brought back to Scripture, and clients are encouraged to engage with God actively throughout the process. “It becomes a deeply personal and relational experience,” she adds. Every client receives a thorough psychiatric evaluation and as many preparatory sessions as needed. Ketamine is self-administered through a gentle “swish and spit” method that keeps clients grounded. Sessions conclude on an InHarmony vibroacoustic bed, which Marci says helps regulate the nervous system and anchor emotional or spiritual insights. A dedicated integration appointment follows every dosing session. “We’re living in a moment where people feel more overwhelmed and spiritually disconnected than ever,” Marci says. Low-dose ketamine, paired with trauma-informed therapy and faith, helps clients who have tried everything yet still feel stuck. “People need a space where they can encounter God in the depths of their story.” Marci hopes Ketagenics will help reshape faith-based, psychedelic-assisted care. She is especially passionate about destigmatizing medication among people in recovery. “Medication doesn’t replace sobriety,” she says. “It can support it by healing the wounds that drove the addiction.” And above all, she wants readers to remember one message: “God loves you!” 253.230.6643 Ketagenics.com

CommonGood Medical, a nonprofit clinic serving uninsured adults in Collin County, began nearly a decade ago from an unexpected moment of need. What started as a local effort to help a single neighbor in medical crisis has grown into a community-driven healthcare hub providing more than 4,200 visits each year. “Our story began in 2016, when a group of local pastors came together to help someone who had been living on the streets and urgently needed medical care,” explains Daniel Moreno, Director of Development. “They quickly

realized how few options existed for uninsured adults in a county as vibrant as Collin County. What started as a conversation turned into a calling.” That calling evolved into CommonGood Medical. From serving one individual, the clinic now offers comprehensive, whole-person care grounded in dignity and compassion. In 2024, the organization, formerly Hope Clinic of McKinney, adopted its new name. “We became CommonGood Medical to reflect our growth and to prepare for what’s next,” Daniel says. “The name embodies our core belief that health is a shared responsibility, and caring for our most vulnerable neighbors strengthens the common good for everyone.” For Daniel, values aren’t words on a wall. They guide every interaction. “We believe every person who walks through our doors is created in the image of God and deserves dignity, compassion, and excellent care,” he says. That belief shows up in both major decisions and everyday moments. CommonGood’s approach is relational. First appointments often last twice the national average, not to be slow, but to allow staff and volunteers the time to truly listen. From warm greetings at the front desk to providers taking extra time to explain diagnoses, the clinic emphasizes compassion, integrity, and respect in all interactions. “Healing isn’t just a clinical process,” Daniel shares. “It’s a relational one, built on trust, humility, and love.” Daniel says the clinic serves uninsured adults in Collin County living at or below 200% of the federal poverty line, many of whom work multiple jobs yet still fall into the Medicaid gap. He points out that while the system overlooks these individuals, CommonGood Medical was designed to serve them. Many

patients are women between 40 and 65 who have spent years prioritizing others while putting their own health on hold, often managing chronic conditions without consistent care due to limited access or high costs. CommonGood offers a wide range of services addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Primary care is central, providing long-term follow-through for chronic conditions, labs, medications, gynecology, and preventive care. “On average, we see patients almost four times a year,” Daniel says. “That continuity allows us to build meaningful relationships that support long-term healing.” Mental health care is integrated into every patient’s journey. New licensed counselors expand access to support for anxiety, depression, and trauma, often struggles patients have carried alone for years. Volunteer optometrists provide vision care, helping patients see clearly and support their work, family, and daily life. For needs beyond the clinic, the CommonGood Network connects patients with specialists, imaging, dental care, and surgical procedures. In 2024 alone, the clinic invested over $157,000 to cover care patients couldn’t afford. CONTINUED >

“Because healing is rarely one-dimensional,” Daniel says, “neither is our care.” One of the clinic’s newest programs, the CommonGood Collective, connects donors with specific medical needs, such as surgeries or procedures, that exceed the clinic’s resources. “It’s a simple but powerful model,” Daniel explains. Each patient story includes a breakdown of the cost and the small financial gap donors can close. “This isn’t charity,” he adds. “It’s shared responsibility. It’s neighbors helping neighbors take one more step toward healing.” Despite Collin County’s growth, more than 110,000 adults under 65 are uninsured, and the county has no public hospital. “There’s no built-in safety net,” Daniel says. “Many face hard choices like ER visits versus rent or waiting and hoping symptoms improve.” CommonGood steps into that gap. “We believe no one should be invisible,” Daniel says. “Your insurance status shouldn’t determine whether you get to feel better.” Rising patient demand has spurred expansion. A new satellite clinic in Farmersville increases access for rural Collin County, while a $3.88 million capital campaign funds a purpose-built clinic in McKinney.

20

G IV IN G BAC K | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

The new facility will expand patient capacity, reduce wait times, add pediatric care, increase dental and optometry services, grow mental health programs, and open an Imaging Center, supported in part by a donated MRI machine. “We’re building access,” Daniel says. “Access to healing, to dignity, and to hope.” This spring, CommonGood will open CommonGood Thrift, a boutique-style shop where donations directly support free healthcare. “Just four bags of donated clothing can provide a month of medical care,” Daniel explains. “It’s generosity made tangible.” As Daniel reminds supporters, CommonGood Medical isn’t a clinic built by a few, rather it’s a mission built by many. “This next chapter isn’t just ours,” he says. “It’s something we’re writing together.” 469.712.4246 CommonGoodMedical.org

PULSE

North Texas’ first professional volleyball team brings energy and excitement. A new team brings a wave of energy to a city. With The Dallas PULSE, that energy feels even stronger. It’s part of who they are— built into their name and their focus. Their mission centers on sparking genuine excitement, and that presence will become real across North Texas starting January 10. As Major League Volleyball’s newest franchise and the region’s first professional women’s volleyball team, The Dallas PULSE arrives at a moment when momentum around women’s sports has never been stronger. According to Deloitte’s 2025 Women in Sport report, women’s pro leagues are expected to bring in over $2 billion worldwide by 2026, a clear sign of how quickly women’s sports are growing. Dallas, with its powerhouse club programs, championship high school talent, and deeply invested volleyball families, was a natural fit for a team positioned to elevate the sport on a major-league stage. “Dallas is known for passionate sports fans, and we can’t wait to bring that same energy courtside for professional women’s volleyball,” said Grady Raskin, Dallas PULSE CEO. The Dallas PULSE will make its debut at Frisco’s Comerica Center, opening the season at home against Indy Ignite, the Indiana franchise. Fans can expect a courtside experience that’s lively, intense, and up close. With marquee matchups against San Diego, Omaha, Atlanta, Orlando, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Grand Rapids, the inaugural schedule promises high-caliber competition and plenty of reasons for fans to rally behind Dallas’ newest team. Heading the team is Coach Shannon Winzer, an internationally respected coach known for developing elite athletes and building

winning cultures. According to Grady, she steps into North Texas with a clear purpose: to shape a roster capable not only of competing, but of setting a standard for the league. The excitement goes beyond the court. Bold, modern, and rooted in the city’s energy, The Dallas PULSE brand signals a new era for North Texas sports. Merchandise is now available, and sponsorship opportunities are open. Fans can reserve premium seating, including season, group, and suite options, before demand soars. The team’s mission is bigger than the game. Led by a diverse, community-focused ownership group that includes several women, The Dallas PULSE is committed to supporting female athletes, creating more opportunities in professional sports, and reflecting the growth of women’s athletics across the country. As the countdown to opening night continues, the organization is encouraging the community to get involved early, from social media engagement to youth clinics to upcoming fan events throughout DFW. “We have 4 brand values that drive everything we do,” says Katrina Streiner, Vice President Marketing & Creative. “We play with heart, we advocate for women, we are Dallas proud, and we are ELECTRIC!” The message is simple. This isn’t just another team. It’s a new chapter for volleyball in North Texas, and come January, the city won’t just watch. It will experience it. For more information, tickets and updates visit DallasPulseVB.com or follow @DallasPULSEVB.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered

28

are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you. 2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat

them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional CONTINUED >

approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes

testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”

Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

ARTICLE BY APRIL SCHULTE-BARCLAY

Values Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment,

and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud

1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!

2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.

3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.

4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.
