If you have a lot of time to take on a new project, you could try starting a vegetable garden, a rose garden or an herb garden in your yard. If you just have one or two types of veggies you want to grow, maybe you try container gardening on your patio or porch.

It’s definitely the time to start thinking about the perennials you want to plant and if there’s any room in your yard for some new trees. Maybe you even try growing some fruit this year! And don’t forget about our bee friends who need our help to keep thriving. Consider planting some flowers that are extra helpful for our pollinators who work so hard. Another way to get into gardening is to contribute to our local community gardens. Flip through this month’s issue to find even more ways you can contribute to the environment this April.

OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Sponsored by Jon C. Thompson, MD

Cameron Harpole | Prosper HS Have you ever met someone who, upon meeting them, you can tell they are destined for greatness? I am sure many feel that way when they meet Cameron Harpole. The nice looking, 6’3” young man has a confident walk and a warm, inviting smile. When he speaks, he demonstrates both confidence and humility equally. No wonder, Prosper HS picked him as their outstanding student/athlete for our inaugural article covering such young people. It is no surprise when you learn that Cameron has accepted a full scholarship to play football at San Diego State due not just to his athletic prowess but his strong academics as well. Cameron has been an outstanding two-sport athlete, football and baseball, since he was a sophomore. Not only has he received such accolades as being All-District and All-State but also achieved Academic All-State. Cameron plays tight end for the Prosper Eagles and his father, Jeremy, chimed in with his role on the baseball team as someone who can play wherever they need him. The young man says his best attribute is his eye-hand coordination. When asked what he was doing to prepare for the competition at the college level, he said he was improving his speed, getting faster each year. Aspirations for this young star include going all the way to the pro level. When asked who he wanted to play for, he grinned and stated, “anyone who will take me”. However, when asked who his favorite player was, he claimed it is Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers. But— the weather of San Diego to Green Bay, WI? When you learn his father that his parents thought about naming him after the great Packer, Bart Starr, you see he just might be willing to make that move.

Cameron’s favorite subjects have been math and history. While playing for the Aztecs, his major is intended to be Business Real Estate. Regardless of where his future lies, you sense he will achieve great success. Eagle coach, Brandon Schmidt, says of Cameron, “Cam is the definition of a student athlete. He leads by example with a tremendous work ethic and a quiet confidence. On the field he is a dynamic playmaker. Off the field he is a great young man.” Cameron says his life has been influenced most by his father, a 5th generation Prosper resident, and his teammates. But among his biggest fans is his mother, Michelle, who, when asked for a photograph, showed her pride in her son with many! His two younger brothers, Cole, 14, and Cash, 12, both look like they can easily follow Cameron’s lead to greatness.

George Fuller Maylee Thomas - Fuller Dear George, I want to publicly take this moment to say just how incredibly proud I am of you and your heart for service in our community. We have been through every season in our three decades together. We have raised four beautiful children, created inspiring music, opened three businesses, and share in the enjoyment of helping at risk in our community through the Love Life Foundation. However, being by your side as Mayor of our community has been a highlight (with just a few, teeny, tiny lows ) I never expected. When we began this journey four years ago, nobody could have imagined the many hurdles and challenges that our country and community would face. You never wavered honey. You navigated each unique challenge with grace, compassion, patience, and discernment…it is why I believe you were created to lead. I also know that these past four years did not come without physical and emotional stress. I have seen you endure so many sleepless nights, answer thousands of emails, meet with anyone that requested (both supporters and non-supporters), attend every community outreach, and simply show up each day prepared to serve. I suppose I might get some backlash from some for publishing this letter. However, it is important for me to go through this journey with you now, letting you, and all those who judge me, know how much I love and admire you. That is not to say I agree with everything you say and do, but I wholeheartedly support you because I know your motivation is, and has always been, what you believe is best for our community. We have chosen a life of ser vice and it is rewarding, but it also comes with criticisms that I imagine create doubt at times. I know these things often weigh heavy on you, but never question my belief in you as a devoted husband, loving father, compassionate and empathetic leader, and man of faith. My hope is that as you read this you will find strength and comfort. I am with you for as long as I am breathing on this planet to help you help others that we serve live to their fullest potential and love life. I love you Geo and I’m so proud to be your wife and helpmate.

-All my love, Maylee Spreading Love and Hope to the At-Risk in our Community

helping those in prison specifically. “A lot of times prison is an opportunity for people to regroup. They are separated from all of the negative distractions, a lot of the things and the people and the environments that got them in trouble and they get a chance to stop and think and realize they have a true and genuine desire to change.” Reclaimed Ministries gives them that opportunity. That is why she created this ministry – as a gateway, a stepping stone, a doorway to hope and to a new life. But it is not a free ride, they must work. And work hard. And show their determination to change. To want a new life. “But being in prison is one thing. You would think that the only thing they want is to be free” but it is so much more than that, “When I would tell them you will be released soon, I would see a lot of fear and anxiety.” Anxiety of freedom? How does that make sense one might ask. Marina explains, “They tell, ‘Here in jail, it is easy for me to be good. When I get out all I know is drugs... my friends. I am coming out of prison with a rap sheet. Who is going to hire me?’” It would be easy to give up and give in.

FAITH REFLECTIONS (CONTINUED)

“To take something that no one else would notice and that someone else might think is garbage and to be discarded and to be renewed and to create something so beautiful and to become something so valuable”, she continues, “And I really believe that is what the Lord does – that we are reclaimed, that we are repurposed and that we become something very different – with a purpose for good and for change and for love.” So many are asking, how you can help. Many ways, donations always help, and shopping at the store goes directly to Reclaimed Ministries and the women in the program. believe in us more than we believe in ourselves sometimes? That

drug tested regularly and must attend a 12-step Bible Study every Friday morning. “It’s a chance at a fresh start.” But it is so much more she continues, “Equipping them with worldly knowledge... life skills, work skills, and spiritual knowledge and the skill to apply it.” Thus why the scripture, ‘Whomever is in Christ is a new creation, old things have passed away, behold, new things have come,” remains one of their tenants. This is an opportunity for those in the program to find their freedom. “The idea of the women being employed in the stores is learning something totally new. But it is a temporary employment. A stepping stone for them to find their calling. What is their place in the world? Our mission is all about giving them a chance to find a new, different and, yes, reclaimed future.” “We are here to remind each other that there is a Higher Power,” Marina’s passion is evident. As it is in her business, it is even more so in her ministry. So while their staff wants to “design the world of your dreams” – their connection with the ministry is about teaching everyone to design the life of your dreams, “and to someone else who might have thought that this is a piece of garbage is now a new and reborn beauty - each of our souls are beautiful and damaged and have a new and better purpose and are beautiful how we are. What more could we ask of someone?” Her passion for her purpose is palpable.

DIY

Benefits of a

chemical-free home

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TURN YOUR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL-FREE? It's not as hard as you might think! We hear a lot about the dangers of chemical ingredients, but it's easy to ignore all of the warnings and keep using our favorite products. When you don't know of a better alternative, it's just what you do! However, all of those ingredients add up and can make a big difference in your health, as well as the health of your family and pets. The products that are most important to swap out depend on your lifestyle and what you use the most. If your little ones are eating food right off of the counter, you might consider the ingredients from the cleaner you just used to wipe it down and start by switching to a natural method.

ARTICLE HAYLEY HYER

If you have sensitive skin, you might start by taking inventory of your beauty and personal care products to see what you can replace. To get you started, here are three DIY products that you can make yourself for your chemical-free home.

DIY (CONTINUED)

DIY Scented Body Moisturizer Just like a new candle can brighten your day, a shimmery scented lotion can make you feel like a queen. The only problem is all of the artificial fragrances, alcohols, dyes, and other chemicals that your skin is absorbing from that bottle. There are some cleaner options such as unscented lotions, but that's a lot less fun. This DIY moisturizer allowed you to customize your own scent while still treating your skin the best you can. The key ingredient? Olive oil! Yes, any bottle of olive oil from your kitchen works. Pour some in a smaller bottle and add several drops of your favorite essential oils. Olive oil is super hydrating, feels great, and will make you question why you ever used lotion in the first place. Plus it's safe for your whole body. Just be mindful of the essential oils you choose. Some types—such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or tea tree oils—cause a cooling effect and can feel uncomfortable if it gets on your face or other sensitive areas.

DIY Counter Cleaner: Safe for Granite + Marble! You probably know that vinegar is a great natural cleaner for most surfaces. Unfortunately, it can be pretty damaging to delicate countertops made from granite or marble. Here's a DIY cleaning spray that's safe for any type of counters you have!

Ingredients + Rubbing alcohol + Dish soap

+ Essential Oils + Water

Directions In a plastic or glass spray bottle, mix one part alcohol with one part water. Add several drops of dish soap and whichever essential oils you would like to add for your desired scent. Shake it up each time you use it as the ingredients will tend to separate. Although it's natural and safe, still avoid spraying directly on your skin as the alcohol and dish soap can dry you out.

DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.

Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils

Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.

While these three recipes give you a great start, that's definitely not all you can do to kick the chemicals out of your home. For more information on starting a chemical-free household, you can browse online resources such as ChemFreeCom.com or find a social media group to join with like-minded people who have some experience from their own trial and error. If you get overwhelmed, remember that you don't have to get rid of all chemicals in one day. Every swap you make is something to celebrate!
