The Red Gate Inn is the epitome of what you would expect in a bed and breakfast. Like the historic downtown McKinney area in which it sits, this wonderful getaway is simply another slice of Americana. And the people who will greet and host you there are some of the most engaging and entertaining you could imagine. Let’s start with Paul Hunt, the innkeeper, who has such a warm personality you might end up calling him “Uncle Paul,” as does Melissa Kimbrell, the breakfast chef. Of course, she calls him Uncle Paul because he is her uncle. Melissa is also co-owner with Paul’s brother, David, who lives in Los Angeles. So, don’t be surprised if you leave feeling like you’ve become part of the family. The Red Gate Inn is very family-oriented, as you will be able to tell from the photos that range from family portraits (that small tad in front is Uncle Paul at a very young age) to other vintage family photos. This beautiful “home away from home” was built in the 1800s but was partially destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1914. However, it has been well-maintained and updated to meet everyone’s modern-day needs. It is complete with all the new smart-home capabilities. Each room has a smart TV, so you can watch your favorite cable channels, just like at home. Wireless connection is available throughout—just in case you can’t get totally away! Her husband, Mark, of 29 years, and adult children, Sean, 28, and Christopher, 25, lived in Belgium and Holland before moving to McKinney. She was a stay-at-home mom in the '90s and was president of the Little League for seven years. Along the way, she made many great friends as well as through her efforts in the school. People learned they could trust Gail, which is a great asset for a mortgage banker. She had been in the real estate industry after college and got involved in the industry again once she decided to get back into the workforce once her children got older. She eventually became an appraiser—her “worst job ever,” she says—where her boss told her she should become a loan banker. Luckily, she took his advice to heart. She joined The Core Training program, which is not an easy entity to get into. Plus, once you are accepted, you must vigorously demonstrate your commitment to continuous improvement. The Core Training, she claims, changed her life as it made such a difference by helping her develop a rigorous process that she says she follows every day. Gail has also created Mastermind Group, made up of several business leaders from the area. They meet to discuss ideas for improvement as well as hold each other accountable for goals they have set. Her driving passion is to teach and share what she has learned through The Core Training program and help them grow their business. To relax, Gail and Mark have recently bought a boat that they enjoy up on Lake Texoma. Having a love of dogs, they accordingly brought home Oliver, a Portuguese water dog, who is a wonderful addition to the office as well. Besides boating, Gail enjoys painting, writing and photography. Gail and Mark have been supporters of the American Heart Association and are in the process of creating their own nonprofit organization to raise awareness of women’s heart issues. The fact that Mark had a heart transplant three years ago is amazing. You Gail & Oliver

And if you visit one of their job sites, you might find them enjoying a lunch provided by Randy or, in the heat of the summer, a tent erected for a shaded respite for the roofers. And, if the ice cream truck happens to show up, guess who ordered it! Just ask General Manager Travis Dowell about Randy’s strength, and he describes it very simply. “Randy genuinely wants to help people. He truly cares,” he says. Travis holds back nothing as he describes what they thought might turn into a nightmare for them. In doing a job for a woman during a windy period, a few things happened that didn’t go too well—like a window being broken by falling product (of course repaired by Pickle Roofing Solutions immediately). Later, after receiving a call from a potential customer, they learned she was

Upon contacting her to thank her, she said simply, “I referred them to you because my roof has been great, but mainly also because when something went wrong, you did such a superior job in handling it.” Randy’s family includes his wife of 25 years, Dana; their son, McDowell, 22, a student at Texas A&M studying business; and Sarah, 20, a student at the University of Arkansas studying supply chain management. But what family wouldn’t be complete without three rescued dogs, two turtles—and a 4-foot ball python? In his free off-time, Randy is very active in their church and its New Hope Ministries. Then come join the fun at the Second Annual McKinney St. Patrick’s Day Festival and Shamrock Run from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 The festival is being presented by Davidson Lane Real Estate Group and will feature a Shamrock Run 5K to kickstart the full day of festivities. Find us at Tupps Brewery at the historic Cotton Mill which will feature delicious food, green beer from Tupps Brewery, a photo booth, costume contests, more than 50 boutiques, small businesses and artisans, local Irish dance academies and an entertainment stage presented by Trinity Falls featuring nonstop Irish entertainment throughout the festival. Musicians and dancers performing on the event stage include String Theory, the Tradition Band, Maguire Academy of Irish Dance and Shandon-O’Regan Irish Dance Academy. “We were very pleased with the attendance at our inaugural event. McKinney residents and visitors showed up in their green to have a good time, and the event definitely delivered,” says event organizer Lauren Stephan of SBG Hospitality. “It’s a family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and we’re looking forward to growing the event to become a favorite in North Dallas for years to come.” Admission to the family-friendly event is free and open to the public. They saw the many needs of these unfortunate children and worked diligently with local institutions and many volunteers to create Embrace in McKinney in 2007. With a degree from the University of North Texas in education, Denise led Embrace as the director of programs until fall 2017 when she was selected as the new executive director. Bruce is an ordained pastor, currently serving as the director of Life Initiatives at Watermark Community Church in Dallas, returning to that from Embrace in 2017. Embrace

When Denise learned that 1 in 3 children up for adoption reaches the age of 18 without being adopted, she realized the needs for these children extended well into their lives. They help these individuals learn to empower themselves since many have no structure on which to rely on as they reach adulthood. In 2012, Embrace’s founders were honored as Child Advocates of the Year by the North American Council on Adoptable Children, and in 2015 and 2016 members of the Embrace staff were honored as Angels in Adoption by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute and have become a great resource for churches and individuals across the state who want to establish similar programs.
